Ecological and environmental research at the International Institute for applied systems analysis

The purpose of this brief article is to describe ecological and environmental research at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA). Because IIASA represents an unusual, perhaps-even unique experiment in science, an understanding of its origins, objectives, and mode of operation provides an important background and perspective for veiewing the research.
