Abstract:Equipment has been developed which collects a continuous series of 3 h samples of the atmospheric aerosol on a strip of AA Millipore membrane filter. Each sample has an area of 0·35 cm2 and represents a filtered volume of 45 1. The sampler requires reloading at intervals of 8 weeks and collects efficiently over the particle size range 0·01–5·0 μm dia. The incoming aerosol is warmed to evaporate aqueous droplets and the collected samples are maintained at a low relative humidity to prevent deliquescence of hygroscopic particles. The used strip is wound in an open spiral to prevent damage to the surface deposit.Examples are given of some types of short term change which have been observed in the particulate composition of the atmospheric aerosol.
