Review on Research of Microbial Fuel Cells for Sulfur-containing Wastewater Treatment

Abstract:With the rapid development of industry and the massive consumption of fossil energy,there is an urgent need to find a sustainable green energy-saving technology to replace non-renewable energy.Microbial fuel cell(MFC)have attracted people’s attention because of their advantages in processing refractory wastewater while generating electrical energy.It has become a research hotspot in recent years,and sulfur-containing wastewater has always been a difficult point in wastewater treatment.This paper focuses on the development of biological sulfide removal,the design and construction of reactor(reaction configuration,electrode materials,proton exchange membrane materials),influencing factors(sulfide concentration,COD concentration,temperature and pH)and microbial transformation in MFC.It is pointed out that the development trend of treating sulfur-containing wastewater in MFCs is to optimize the reactor configuration,develop efficient catalyst materials and screen superior bacteria.It is necessary to clarify the degradation mechanism to accelerate the treatment of sulfur-containing wastewater to the maximum extent.
