Crustacean zooplankton community structure and characteristics of the water environment in Liuye Lake and its connected waters in Changde City

Abstract:The aim of this study was to better understand the characteristics of crustacean zooplankton in connected waters. Samples were collected quarterly in Liuye Lake, Chuanzi River, and the Changde segment of the Yuan River in Changde City, China, from June 2018 to March 2019. A total of 27 zooplankton species were identified, including 10 species of copepods and 17 species of cladocerans. The abundance of crustacean zooplankton in the connected waters ranged from 1 ind./L to 132 ind./L. The annual average abundance of zooplankton in the Changde segment of the Yuan River was significantly lower than that in Liuye Lake(P < 0.01) and the Chuanzi River(P < 0.05). The abundance of zooplankton in Liuye Lake and Chuanzi River were both higher in summer and autumn than in winter and spring. Moina macrocopa and Diaphanosoma dubium were the dominant species in summer and autumn in the connected water body, whereas Bosmina coregoni, Cyclops vicinus, and Sinocalanus dorrii were the dominant species in winter and spring. Analysis of similarities(ANOSIM) demonstrated that the crustacean zooplankton community was significantly different among seasons with the highest difference in summer and spring. These differences were caused by the abundance of dominant species, especially in summer and spring. Linear regression analysis showed that the abundance of zooplankton was significantly and positively correlated with the concentration of chlorophyll a(P < 0.01). Canonical correspondence analysis(CCA) suggested that environmental factors affecting the community structure of crustacean zooplankton in the connected waters were water temperature, transparency, and the potassium permanganate index. The water quality of the Changde segment of the Yuan River was the best, followed by that of Liuye Lake, and the water quality of the Chuanzi River was the worst. Therefore, more measures should be taken to protect the urban aquatic ecosystem.
