Abstract:Membrane-aerated biofilm reactors (MABRs) represent a novel biotreatment technology. In an MABR, the gas-permeable membrane is used as the diffuser for bubbleless aeration as well as the carrier for biofilm growth. Oxygen from the biofilm-membrane interface (by oxygen diffusing through the membrane) and substrates from the biofilm-liquid interface are supplied from two opposite directions to the biofilm, in contrast to those from the same side in conventional biofilm bioreactors. MABR is characterized by bubbleless aeration and functional activity stratification of biofilm with counter-diffusion. MABR can be potentially utilized to effectively treat wastewaters of high oxygen-demand, high ammonia or volatile organic pollutants. This article reviews, in a comprehensive manner, the operational concept, characteristics, membrane materials and applications of the MABR process as well as the prospects and priorities for MABR technology development.
