Abstract: | An increase in PCB concentration with length has been observed with the striped bass in the Hudson River and Long Island Sound, New York. Physico-chemical characteristics and water concentrations were estimated for PCB's in the River and Sound waters. Using first order bioconcentration kinetics this data allowed possible fish concentrations at different lengths/ages to be calculated. This derived data was in reasonable agreement with the observed data. This indicated that the observed relationship between length and concentration is substantially due to the slow rate of bioconcentration of the PCB's, particularly the higher chlorinated congeners. |
