Abstract:Publication of a daily Air Quality Index, provided by the New Jersey State Department of Environmental Protection, Bureau of Air Pollution Control, began on 15 May 1972. The Index is intended to provide both interested citizens and persons with a professional interest in air pollution with the best available information on levels of four pollutants—carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, smoke shade and oxidants. Actual concentrations—in μg or mg m−3—are presented, based on data from air monitoring sites throughout the State. The concentrations are directly comparable to national Ambient Air Quality Standards for the contaminants. In addition, an overall daily rating and a forecast rating for the following day are supplied.
