Abstract:The collapse of buildings causing massive people death and property loss is the main damage of earthquake. Continuous improvement in the anti-seismic design of the building is a traditional way to reduce the damage. With the development of the study on structural vibration control, a new route to reduce the damage has been found. Based on "three levels" standards of anti-seismic design of buildings, hybrid mass damper (HMD) is now applied to the seismic control. Tuned mass damper (TMD) is used when low level earthquake occurs frequently. The actuator is motivated when moderate or high level earthquake occurs and when the control goal is exceeded. Then TMD turns to active mass damper (AMD). The appended mass, driven by the control force, gives a larger force to the main structure, so that the control goal could be maintained. The theoretical analysis and simulating results show that HMD may be applied to a wide range of earthquake excitation and the control effectiveness is quite evident.
