STUDY ON URBAN SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT IN TERMS OF INSTITUTIONABLE DEVELOPMENT

The author concludes in this dissertation that two key issues in urban unsustainable development are the unsustainable urbanization and urban unsustainable development. On the basis of systematical studies on the theories of urban development, institutional economics and sustainable development, the author brings forward a framework of institutional analysis for the urban sustainable development. The reasons that the author introduces the framework of institutional analysis in an in-depth study of urban sustainable development are based on the theoretical statement on which institution decides efficiency and fairness. Urban sustainable development includes the sustainability in economic system, in environmental system, in social system, and in institutional system. In terms of the development of urban system, the sustainability in environment, economy, society and institution is the foundation, the condition, the objective and the guarantee respectively. The coordinated development among the above four sub-systems is the key to urban sustainability. The author also points out that the institutional arrangement for urban sustainable development should follow three orientations: the benefits of agglomeration, competitive advantage, and institutional innovation.
