Abstract: | Epidemiological studies about non-auditory effects of noise have been reviewed. For methodological reasons, only occupational studies are compared with each other. Most studies were directed, as before, to the relation between noise and arterial blood pressure. In about half of the studies, a positive relation could be demonstrated, in the other studies, however, no relation was found. Methodological comments are given. Definite conclusions are still not possible. In three investigations the effects of noise on pregnancy were studied. A negative effect on birth weight is presented in one of these studies. More research is needed. Task components probably interact with noise exposure producing annoyance and stress symptoms. The use of epidemiological methods in research of non-auditory effects of noise is still very limited. |
