The outcome of a 21-month monitoring study on anionic surfactants (AS) at five (27–70 ML/d) up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) based sewage treatment plants (STPs) is described. The average removals of AS were around 8–30%. Appreciable concentrations of AS were being discharged to the watercourse (average 4.30 mg/L; range 3.60–4.91 mg/L). On an average dried sludge contained 1452 mg AS/kg dry weight. Mass balance at three STPs indicated that, AS load of the order of 5–17% and ≈12% is removed by adsorption in UASB reactors and polishing ponds (PP) respectively. Biodegradation of AS under anaerobic conditions in UASB reactors and PP does not seem to take place. In the sludge stream, appreciable biodegradation (≈46%) of adsorbed AS under aerobic conditions on the sludge drying beds takes place. If influent AS mass flux is normalized to 100 units, than average of ≈74 and ≈7 units are discharged with treated effluent and dried sludge respectively, while 12 and 6 units are adsorbed/settled in PP and aerobically biodegrade on sludge drying beds respectively. At two STPs (34 and 56 ML/d), the filterable fluxes in UASBR increased so that the mass balance could not be computed.  相似文献

Fe–Mn oxide and Ce-doped Fe–Mn oxide sorbents were studied on the structural and desulfurization behavior in COS removal from syngas. The effects of cerium oxide on the Fe–Mn oxides have been investigated by XRD, BET, TPR, XPS and TEM methods. Analysis data show that the Ce-doped sorbent has larger specific surface area and better particles’ dispersion compared with non-modified Fe–Mn sorbent. The addition of Ce improves the reduction performance of Fe–Mn species. The desulfurization experiments show that the desulfurization activity of sorbent can be increased because of the promotion of the structural and redox properties by ceria doped. The Ce-doped sorbent can reduce COS from 15,000 ppmv to less than 0.1 ppmv at 325 °C and a space velocity of 1000 h−1.  相似文献

Biodiesel as an alternative fuel for fossil diesel has many benefits such as reducing regulated air pollutants emissions, reducing greenhouse gases emissions, being renewable, biodegradable and non-toxic. In this study, used frying oil was applied as a low cost feedstock for biodiesel production by alkali-catalyzed transesterification. The design of experiments was performed using a double 5-level-4-factor central composite design coupled with response surface methodology in order to study the effect of factors on the yield of biodiesel and optimizing the reaction conditions. The factors studied were: reaction temperature, molar ratio of methanol to oil, catalyst concentration, reaction time and catalyst type (NaOH and KOH). A quadratic model was suggested for the prediction of the ester yield. The p-value for the model fell below 0.01 (F-value of 27.55). Also, the R2 value of the model was 0.8831 which indicates the acceptable accuracy of the model. The optimum conditions were obtained as follows: reaction temperature of 65 °C, methanol to oil molar ratio of 9, NaOH concentration of 0.72% w/w, reaction time of 45 min and NaOH as the more effective catalyst. In these conditions the predicted and observed ester yields were 93.56% and 92.05%, respectively, which experimentally verified the accuracy of the model. The fuel properties of the biodiesel produced under optimum conditions, including density, kinetic viscosity, flash point, cloud and pour points were measured according to ASTM standard methods and found to be within specifications of EN 14214 and ASTM 6751 biodiesel standards.  相似文献

In order to develop highly active sorbent for COS removal, Fe–Mn mixed oxides doped with CeO2, La2O3 or Sm2O3 were studied. The effects of these promoters on the structural properties of Fe–Mn oxides were investigated by XRD, BET, TPR and TEM techniques. XRD results revealed that the degree of crystallinity of Fe–Mn oxide phase decreased due to the addition of rare-earth oxides. Doping with CeO2, La2O3 or Sm2O3 led to an increase in BET surface area of the sample. TPR studies showed that the reactivity of the reduction of doped samples increased in the temperature range of 300–450 °C. In addition, the desulfurization test was performed at 325 °C with a gas hourly space velocity of 1000 h−1. It was found that the addition of 3% La2O3 greatly improved the absorption sulfur capacity of the sorbent, while the sorbent doped 3% CeO2 achieved a sufficiently high purifying degree before breakthrough.  相似文献

The absorption of NO encountering flue gases in aqueous solutions of Fe(II)EDTA was determined using a semi-batch stirred tank with a plane gas–liquid interface at 50 °C. The concentrations of NO, SO2 and O2 in the feeding stream were 300–800 ppm, 500–2200 ppm and 0–20%, respectively. The pH value of the Fe(II)EDTA solutions varied from 3 to 11. The concentrations of Fe(II)EDTA were maintained between 0.01 and 0.05 M. Experiments were performed to evaluate the effect of operating parameters on the NO absorption rate, the reaction kinetics of the reactants in gas and liquid phases, and the effect of competition between various reactants on the mass transfer rate in the NO removal system. Results indicate that the average reaction rate constant is 3.70 × 107 M−1 s−1. Adding NaOH does not increase the absorption capability of Fe(II)EDTA. The presence of O2 decreases the NO absorption rate with Fe(II)EDTA. The absorption rate of NO with Fe(II)EDTA decreases at low concentrations of SO2, but increases at high concentrations.  相似文献

Biodiesel is a non-toxic and biodegradable substitute for petroleum-based diesel. However, it is impractical to use refined edible oils to produce biodiesel due to its high cost and priority for food products, especially in China, while waste oils with high free fatty acids (FFAs) can be considered as the raw materials. In the present work, a solid acid catalyst comprising SO42−/TiO2–SiO2 was prepared, characterized and studied for its activity for the production of biodiesel from several low cost feedstocks with high FFAs. The solid acid catalyst can be recycled, easily removed and can simultaneously catalyze esterification and transesterification. The influence of reaction parameters was studied, and the optimized reaction parameters are reaction temperature 200 °C, molar ratio of methanol to oil 9:1 and catalyst concentration 3 wt.%. The catalyst showed good stability. A continuous process for biodiesel production from cheap raw feedstocks was proposed, and a 10,000-tonnes/year biodiesel production demonstration plant has been built.  相似文献

The municipal landfill leachate was treated in a hydrolysis–acidification reactor (HAR)/aerobic bio-contact oxidation reactor (ABOR) following a pretreatment with ultrafiltration (UF) membrane. Experiments were conducted continuously for 44 days at a constant flow rate of 20 l d−1 and organic loading rates (OLRs) from 0.75 to 1.5 kgCOD m−3 per day. The results showed that COD of the leachate steadily decreased from 20,015 mg l−1 to less than 3000 mg l−1, and NH4-N decreased from 368.6 mg l−1 to 259.3 mg l−1 in the UF process. The COD and NH4-N removal efficiency of HAR was 56.7% and 27.7%, and that of ABOR was 94.6% and 86.7%, respectively. The total COD and NH4-N removal efficiency reached 99.6% and 93.2%, respectively. UF and HAR played a critical role in raising the biodegradability of the landfill leachate, while ABOR had an important function on removing the dissolved NH4-N in leachate.  相似文献

The effects of enriching natural gas with hydrogen on local flame extinction, combustion instabilities and power output have been widely studied for both stationary and mobile systems. On the contrary, the issues of explosion safety for hydrogen–methane mixtures are still under investigation.In this work, experimental tests were performed in a 5 L closed cylindrical vessel for explosions of hydrogen–methane mixtures in stoichiometric air. Different compositions of hydrogen–methane were tested (from pure methane to pure hydrogen) at varying initial pressures (1, 3 and 6 bar).Results have allowed the quantification of the combined effects of both mixture composition (i.e., hydrogen content in the fuel) and initial pressure on maximum pressure, maximum rate of pressure rise and burning velocity. The measured burning velocities were also correlated by means of a Le Chatelier’s Rule-like formula. Good predictions have been obtained (at any initial pressure), except for mixtures with hydrogen molar content in the fuel higher than 50%.  相似文献

This paper presents the findings from a study on the evaporation process of 93 RON (research octane number) unleaded gasoline. The parameters measured in the experiment included the weight, the RVP (Reid vapor pressure) and the viscosity of gasoline, the concentration of NMHC (non-methane total hydrocarbon) in the oil vapor and the concentration of the main vapor constituent. Results showed that the parameters changed significantly as evaporation processed. The weight loss reached 86.36% after 300 days and presented a logarithmic curve with time. The RVP decreased from 38 kPa to 9.6 kPa. The viscosity of gasoline increased from 8.6 × 10?4 Pa s to 1.51 × 10?3 Pa s. All the concentrations of NMHC and the main constituent of vapor decreased in varying amounts. Most of the changes might be attributed to the evaporation of volatile hydrocarbons.  相似文献

Annual ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) is an important cool-season forage grass in the southeastern US. Since large portions of soils in this region are too acidic for optimum ryegrass production, there exists an opportunity to use lime mud waste from numerous regional pulp and paper mills as an agricultural liming material. In this study, four lime mud application rates, 2.25 (L1), 4.51 (L2), 9.01 (L3), and 22.50 (L4) ton ha−1, dry weight basis, and a control (L0) were evaluated for response to ryegrass growth during the first 6 weeks to estimate an optimum application range over the testing soil for future field test. Results indicated that applied lime mud slowed ryegrass germination and seedling emergence, with differences of whole plant length among treatments L0–L4 significant only during the first three weeks. Differences of whole plant dry weight among treatments L0–L4 reduced thereafter. The initial soil pH increase due to the lime mud application dropped in treatments L1–L4 by the end of the 6-week experiment. The optimum lime mud application range was estimated between L2 and L3, which provided higher ryegrass yields (kg ha−1) of 84 and 80 over 77 of the control and complied with the Code of Federal Regulation, CFR 40 Part 503 for land application.  相似文献

Zn+2 and Ni+2 in a solution were removed by biosorption in a fixed bed of wheat straw Triticum aestivum. The removal rate and the mass transfer coefficient for Zn+2 and Ni+2 were found to be proportional to the liquid superficial velocity to the power of 0.31 for the range of the particle Reynolds number from 18 to 445 (equivalent liquid rates of 0.00070–0.0175 m3 m−2 s−1). This agrees well with reported literature for mass transfer in a packed bed of solid particles under a laminar flow regime. Effect of the solution pH, temperature and the particle size (0.5, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 in.) on biosorption of Zn+2 and Ni+2 was also investigated. Biosorption of both Zn+2 and Ni+2 increased significantly with the solution pH from 4.0 to 7.0. On the other hand, Zn+2 and Ni+2 removal appeared to be insensitive to liquid temperature from 25 to 30 °C. Nevertheless, a 25% increase in the percentage removal of metal ions was observed with further increase of liquid temperature from 30 to 35 °C. However, the biosorbent particle size did not seem to have a systematic effect on the biosorption of Zn+2 and Ni+2. In addition, biosorption of Zn+2 was not affected considerably by co-adsorption of the bimetal solution while biosorption of Ni+2 decreased about 14%.  相似文献

A gas–solid fluidized bed bioreactor was successfully used to treat air contaminated with a volatile organic compound (VOC). A bioreactor containing both a fluidized and packed bed of moist peat granules removed ethanol, a representative VOC, from an air stream. The fluidized bed operation mode of the bioreactor outperformed the packed bed mode. The maximum elimination capacity (EC) of ethanol in the fluidized mode was 1520 g m−3 h−1, with removal efficiencies ranging between 45 and 100%, at loadings up to 3400 g m−3 h−1. Maximum EC was 530 g m−3 h−1 in the packed bed mode. Removal efficiency in the fluidized bioreactor was best at the lowest velocity, where the bubbling bed fluidization regime predominated. As gas velocity increased, the size and amount of large bubbles (slugs) increased and removal efficiency decreased while elimination capacity increased.  相似文献

Drowsiness has been recognized as a pervasive problem for drivers, with effects comparable to alcohol. Alcohol, however, has a clear legal limit for impairment; there are no comparable criteria to suggest sleepiness. Drowsiness has been associated with light and circadian rhythm. To investigate the joint effects of these factors on crash occurrence, along with other factors, single vehicle crashes reported in Ontario (1999–2004) were analyzed. Crashes occurring at four times of day, when light varies and circadian rhythm is low (2–5 a.m. and 2–4 p.m.) and with similar light conditions and higher circadian rhythm (9–11 p.m. and 10 a.m.–12 noon). Logistic regression was used to see how light and other factors are associated with single vehicle crashes occurring at times of low circadian rhythm, when drowsiness is more likely.Initial results indicated many circumstances associated with occurrence at these times: the age and sex of the driver and reported driver condition as well as weather. There is, however, an interaction between light and presumed alertness. In separate analyses for daytime and night time crashes most variables were significant for nighttime crashes but not for daytime events. The effects of alcohol and youth remained. A lack of light may exacerbate the effects of other factors at times of low alertness; this should be further investigated in controlled environments such as sleep laboratories and/or driving simulators.  相似文献

The use of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models to simulate LNG vapor dispersion scenarios has been growing steadily over the last few years, with applications to LNG spills on land as well as on water. Before a CFD model may be used to predict the vapor dispersion hazard distances for a hypothetical LNG spill scenario, it is necessary for the model to be validated with respect to relevant experimental data. As part of a joint-industry project aimed at validating the CFD methodology, the LNG vapor source term, including the turbulence level associated with the evaporation process vapors was quantified for one of the Falcon tests.This paper presents the method that was used to quantify the turbulent intensity of evaporating LNG, by analyzing the video images of one of the Falcon tests, which involved LNG spills onto a water pond. The measured rate of LNG pool growth and spreading and the quantified turbulence intensity that were obtained from the image analysis were used as the LNG vapor source term in the CFD model to simulate the Falcon-1 LNG spill test. Several CFD simulations were performed, using a vaporization flux of 0.127 kg/m2 s, radial and outward spreading velocities of 1.53 and 0.55 m/s respectively, and a range of turbulence kinetic energy values between 2.9 and 28.8 m2/s2. The resulting growth and spread of the vapor cloud within the impounded area and outside of it were found to match the observed behavior and the experimental measured data.The results of the analysis presented in this paper demonstrate that a detailed and accurate definition of the LNG vapor source term is critical in order for any vapor cloud dispersion simulation to provide useful and reliable results.  相似文献

The effects of cycle time on the biodegradation of the azo dye remazol brilliant violet 5R (RBV-5R) were investigated in an anaerobic–aerobic sequencing batch reactor (SBR). System performance was determined by monitoring chemical oxygen demand (COD), color, anaerobic enzyme (azo reductase) and aerobic enzyme (catechol 2,3-dioxygenase), and aromatic amine concentration. SBR was operated in three different total cycle times (48 h, 24 h and 12 h), fed with a synthetic textile wastewater. In this study, the anaerobic period of SBR was found to allow the reductive decolorization of azo dye and the aerobic period was found to be effective on further COD removal after the anaerobic period. The percentage reductions in color by the anaerobic stage of the SBR were at 72%, 89% and 86% for the 24-h, 12-h and 6-h cycle times, respectively. Total COD removal efficiencies were over 75% for all operational conditions and about 70% of the COD removal was achieved in the first 3 h of anaerobic stages. During the decolorization of RBV-5R, two sulfonated aromatic amines (benzene-based and naphthalene-based) were formed and detected by HPLC. Aerobic phases of SBR with total cycle times of 48 h, 24 h and 12 h were able to remove benzene-based aromatic amines with removal efficiency of 64%, 92% and 89%, respectively. The results indicated that the best SBR performance in terms of color removal and aromatic amine degradation was achieved from total cycle time of 24 h.  相似文献

The ignition and explosion of combustible vapor clouds represents a significant hazard across a range of industries. In this work, a new set of gas detonations experiments were performed to provide benchmark blast loading data for non-trivial geometry and explosion cases. The experiments were designed to represent two different accident scenarios: one where ignition of the vapor cloud occurs shortly after release and another where ignition is delayed and a fuel concentration gradient is allowed to develop. The experiments focused on hydrogen-air and methane-oxygen detonations in a semiconfined enclosure with TNT equivalencies ranging from 9 g to 1.81 kg. High-rate pressure transducers were used to record the blast loads imparted on the interior walls of a 1.8 m × 1.8 m × 1.8 m test fixture. Measurements included detonation wave velocity, peak overpressure, impulse, and positive phase duration. A comparison of the pressure and impulse measurements with several VCE models is provided. Results show that even for the most simplified experimental configuration, the simplified VCE models fail to provide predictions of the blast loading on the internal walls of the test fixture. It is shown that the confinement geometry of the experiment resulted in multiple blast wave reflections during the initial positive phase duration portion of the blast loading, and thus, significantly larger blast impulse values were measured than those predicted by analytical models. For the pressure sensors that experienced normally-reflect blast waves for the initial blast impulse, the Baker-Strehlow and TNT equivalency models still struggled to accurately capture the peak overpressure and reflected impulse. The TNO multi-energy model, however, performed better for the case of simple normally-reflected blast waves. The results presented here may be used as validation data for future model or simulation development.  相似文献

An autocontrol two-stage hybrid process was developed to treat landfill leachate. Biological nitrogen removal with nitrification and denitrification via nitrite pathway was split into two stages. The first stage was designed for the high nitrite accumulation and was composed of two hybrid bed reactors (Hybrid I and Hybrid II) and a coagulation–flocculation reactor having effective volumes of 120 L and 80 L, respectively. The second stage was designed for strengthening denitrification and included a single 80 L reactor. The carriers of the hybrid bed reactors were composed of fixed multiple flexible carriers and suspended particle carriers. Dissolved oxygen (DO), pH value, oxidation–reduction potential (ORP) and temperature were used as online fuzzy control parameters of the automatic control system. The concentration of nitrite in Hybrid I and Hybrid II could reach 411 mg L−1 and 604 mg L−1, respectively. Ammonia removal has reached maximal rates of 0.061 kgNH4+-N (m3 h)−1 and 0.041 kgNH4+-N (m3 h)−1, respectively. A maximum nitrite removal rate of 0.211 kgNO2-N (m3 h)−1 was observed during the strengthening denitrification. The running time of one cycle was not fixed and was actually controlled by the system. The results indicated that the running period was more closely related to influent ammonia concentration than influent COD concentration. The aeration times could be shortened and the energy could be saved. The autocontrol two-stage hybrid process is therefore an economical and effective way for landfill leachate treatment.  相似文献

Diagnosis and monitoring are the major tasks of an operator in main control room of nuclear power plants (NPPs). The operator’s mental workload influences his/her performance, and furthermore, affects the system safety and operations. This study investigated the operator’s mental workload and work performance of the NPP in Taiwan. An experiment including primary and secondary tasks was designed to simulate the reactor shutdown procedure of the fourth nuclear power plant (FNPP). The performance of the secondary tasks (error rate), subjective mental workload (NASA Task Load Index, NASA-TLX) as well as seven physiological indices were assessed and measured. The group method of data handling (GMDH) was applied to integrate these physiological indices to develop a work performance predictive model. The validity of the proposed model is very well with R2 = 0.84 and its prediction capability is high (95% confidence interval). The proposed model is expected to provide control room operators a reference value of their work performance by giving physiological indices. Besides NPPs, the proposed model can be applied to many other fields, e.g. aviation, air transportation control, driving and radar vigilance, etc.  相似文献

The core aim of the study is to examine associations between formal and informal practical driver training as well as driving experience on the one hand and young drivers’ safety attitudes, self-assessment of driving ability and self-reported driver behaviour on the other hand. An additional aim is to examine the associations between attitudes, self-assessment and behaviour on the one hand and crash involvement on the other hand. The results are based on a self-completion questionnaire survey conducted among a representative sample of Norwegian drivers aged 18–20 years (n = 1419). The results showed that there were small yet significant associations between driver training, on the one hand and traffic safety attitudes and risky driving behaviour on the other hand. The amount of formal driver training was negatively associated with the respondents’ evaluation of their driving skills; although the amount of lay instruction was positively associated with such self-evaluation. The results also showed that attitudes as well as self-assessment of driving ability were significantly associated with self-reported risk behaviour. This was especially true for attitudes related to rule violations. There was a strong association between crash involvement and exposure (measured as months holding a licence). Young novice drivers’ crash involvement seems stronger associated with driving skills (manifested as self-assessment of driving ability) than safety attitudes and self-reported driver behaviour. The consequences of the results for driver training and accident prevention are discussed.  相似文献

Experiments with hydrogen–air and ethylene–air mixtures at atmospheric pressure were carried out in a 6.1 m long, 0.1 m diameter tube with different obstacle configurations and ignition types. Classical DDT experiments were performed with the first part of the tube filled with equally spaced 75 mm (44% area blockage ratio) orifice-plates. The DDT limits, defining the so-called quasi-detonation regime, where the wave propagates at a velocity above the speed of sound in the products, were found to be well correlated with d/λ = 1, where d is orifice-plate diameter and λ is the detonation cell size. The only exception was the rich ethylene limit where d/λ = 1.9 was found. In a second experiment detonation propagation limits were measured by transmitting a CJ detonation wave into an obstacle filled (same equally spaced 44% orifice plates) section of the tube. An oxy-acetylene driver promptly initiated a detonation wave at one end. In this experiment the quasi-detonation propagation limits were found to agree very well with the d/λ = 1 correlation. This indicates that the d/λ = 1 represents a propagation limit. In general, one can conclude that the classical DDT limits measured in an orifice-plate filled tube are governed by the wave propagation mechanism, independent of detonation initiation (DDT process) that can occur locally in the obstacles outside these limits. For rich mixtures, transmission of the quasi-detonation into the smooth tube resulted in CJ detonation wave. However, in a narrow range of mixtures on the lean side, the detonation failed to transmit in the smooth tube. This highlights the critical role that shock reflection plays in the propagation of quasi-detonation waves.  相似文献
