In order to understand the reproductive contribution among migratory types in the Japanese eel, Anguilla japonica, otolith strontium (Sr) and calcium (Ca) concentrations by X-ray electron microprobe analysis were examined for 37 silver eels collected in Kii Channel off Shikoku Island during the spawning migration season. The wide range of otolith Sr:Ca ratios indicated that the habitat use of A. japonica was not obligatory but facultative among fresh, brackish and marine waters during their growth phases after recruitment to the coastal areas as glass eels. Three migratory types, which were categorized as river eels, estuarine eels and sea eels were found. The estuarine eels were dominant (59%), followed by sea eels (22%) and river eels (19%). The low proportion of river eels from the spawning migration season suggested that the estuarine and sea eels inhabiting the nearby coastal areas might make a larger reproductive contribution to the next generation in this area.  相似文献

This study reviewed literature on spawning times for three north temperate species of anguillid eels estimated by sampling for small leptocephali (larvae) at sea and for several temperate and tropical species by back-calculating from putative daily ages derived from otolith increment analysis of glass eels that recruited to coastal waters. Estimates from otoliths of European eels, Anguilla anguilla, American eels, Anguilla rostrata, and Japanese eels, Anguilla japonica, imply much more protracted spawning seasons than are indicated by sampling at sea during various times of year. European eels are inferred to spawn year-round from otolith analysis, but the smallest, recently hatched leptocephali are found only in late winter and spring. From otoliths, the spawning times of these three species are all estimated to occur much later in the year than when small leptocephali are found at sea, indicating that ages appear to be underestimated. For these and other temperate and tropical eels, there are inconsistencies in assigned ages among various studies, which are most extreme for the European eel. This species has the longest larval migration and often has an opaque zone in the glass eels’ otoliths where it is difficult to discern growth increments. These inconsistencies suggest that interpretation of otolith growth increments is incorrect at least in some studies, and the apparently consistent mismatch between otolith and sea-sampling studies suggests that increments may not always be formed at some period during the unusual early life history of anguillids. Because daily increments may be formed in eels during most of their early life history, future research is needed to determine the cause of the mismatch of glass eel aging studies and the apparent spawning times of eels offshore. Diadromous fish often enter freshwater directly from seawater via fish ladders or channels built in estuarine dams. The oxygen consumption rates (OCR) of glass eel, Anguilla japonica, were determined using an automatic intermittent flow respirometer under various salinity and temperature regimes to physiologically explain this direct movement. The endogenous rhythm of the OCR in wild glass eels, freshly collected from estuaries, was nearly synchronous with the tidal pattern at the estuarine collection site. When the salinity was changed from 20 psu (12°C) at a constant temperature to that of freshwater, the OCR of the glass eels decreased by 21.6±7.0% (mean ± SD) (P<0.05), showing a dampened rhythm for about 48 h. After this period of impediment, the glass eels resumed normal metabolic activity. Direct migration from seawater to freshwater under constant temperature would result in a severe physiological stress for these glass eels for about two days. When the glass eels were exposed to a cyclic change in water temperature of 2°C 26 h−1, as they encounter in estuaries, and then were introduced to freshwater abruptly, the OCR rhythm corresponded to the cyclic changes in water temperature after exposure to freshwater. Under these conditions, the mean OCR of the glass eels had a small difference before and after exposure to freshwater. These data explained how glass eels can directly move from sea water into the freshwater without any apparent metabolic stress in the estuaries showing cyclic change in water temperature (Δt=2°C).  相似文献

In order to examine the variation in migratory history of the Japanese eel, Anguilla japonica, we measured otolith strontium (Sr) and calcium (Ca) concentrations by X-ray electron microprobe analysis in 5 yellow eels and 20 silver eels collected in the coastal waters of the Amakusa Islands during the spawning migration season. Three migratory types categorized as river eels, estuarine eels and sea eels were found. Estuarine eels were dominant (52%), sea eels were the second most abundant (28%), followed by river eels (20%). The low proportion of river eels from the spawning migration season suggested that the estuarine and sea eels that inhabit the nearby coastal areas might make a larger reproductive contribution to the next generation in this area, although similar analyses should be made over the wide-range geographic distribution of this species, to provide better estimates of the reproductive contributions by different migratory patterns of the population.  相似文献

Tagging and transplantation experiments on a total of 1538 cels (Anguilla anguilla L.) caught in the German Bight near the islands Helgoland and Föhr, as well as in the area northwest of the Elbe estuary near Cuxhaven and in the port of Hamburg, resulted in recapture of 77 eels (5.0%). Of the recaptured eels 64% were reported from the area of their original capture. Some homed from distances of 180 km. Eels tagged and released within the area of original capture (control experiments) were recaptured only in these areas. A maximum migration speed of at least 1 km/h was found in one case, and of 3 km/h in another. Average speed of migration may, however, have been much lower, since in most other cases recaptures were reported at least 2 weeks after release. The homing abilities demonstrated cannot in all cases be accounted for by olfactory sensitivity alone; home areas were in some cases located in such a way that the water circulation in the southern North Sea could not have provided any lead for the migrating eels.  相似文献

In a Baltic herring (Clupea harengus membras L.) spawning ground study, carried out in summer 1982 in the northern Baltic proper, spawning herring were encountered on two line transects on June 14. The spawning behaviour of minor groups as well as of a large school was studied in situ by four divers for approximately three hours. No behavioural differences or systematic coordinated behaviour between the sexes could be detected. Most of the spawning took place in a limited depth interval, 0.5 to 4 m, and Ceramium tenuicorne was the substrate most used.  相似文献

Successful spawning of Baltic cod (Gadus morhua L.) is restricted to the deep basins of the Baltic Sea and is dependent on abiotic conditions such as salinity and water oxygen content. Due to irregular inflows of saline water from the North Sea, the conditions for spawning fluctuate and consequently so does the cod stock. In May and June 1990 eggs were obtained from spawning cod caught off northern Gotland, Sweden. Our investigation revealed neutral egg buoyancy for Baltic cod at a salinity of 14.4±1.1 ppt, with a slight decrease some days before hatching. Today salinities of this magnitude occur only in the Bornholm basin, whereas in the Gdansk and Gotland basins the eggs sink toward the bottom and are exposed to lethal oxygen conditions.  相似文献

Strontium (Sr) and calcium (Ca) contents in the otoliths of yellow and silver European eels [Anguilla anguilla (L.)] collected from coastal waters of the Baltic Sea and a freshwater lake in Sweden were examined by wavelength dispersive X-ray spectrometry with an electron microprobe. The mean Sr/Ca ratios from elver check to otolith edge were significantly higher for the eels from coastal waters (5.39 ± 1.09‰) than for those from the lake (0.71 ± 0.89‰). The evidence indicates that European eels in the Baltic Sea do not necessarily migrate into freshwater streams during the growth phase. Received: 30 September 1999 / Accepted: 6 April 2000  相似文献

The development of gill chloride cells was examined in premetamorphic larvae (leptocephali) and juveniles (glass eels) of the Japanese eel, Anguilla japonica. Branchial chloride cells were detected by immunocytochemistry using an antiserum specific for Na+,K+-ATPase. The specificity and availability of the antiserum for the detection of Japanese eel chloride cells were confirmed by Western blot analysis. The chloride cells first appeared on the developing gill filaments in a mid larval stage of leptocephalus (32.2 mm). Both immunoreactivity and the number of chloride cells gradually increased as the fish grew to a late stage of leptocephalus over 54 mm. In glass eels just after metamorphosis, gill lamellae developed from the gill filaments, and a rich population of chloride cells was observed in the gill filaments. In glass eels collected at a coastal area, chloride cells were extensively distributed in the gill filaments. The chloride cell size decreased progressively in glass eels transferred from seawater (SW) to freshwater (FW), whereas there was no difference in cell number. In contrast, some Na+,K+-ATPase immunoreaction distinct from typical chloride cells was observed in the gill lamellae throughout FW-transferred fish, but disappeared in control fish maintained in SW for 14 days. These findings indicate that the gill and gill chloride cells developed slowly during the extremely long larval stage, followed by rapid differentiation during a short period of metamorphosis. The excellent euryhalinity of glass eels may be due to the presence of the filament chloride cells and lamellar Na+,K+-ATPase-immunoreaction, presumably being responsible for SW and FW adaptation, respectively.  相似文献

Locomotor activity was recorded from 11 female silver American eels (Anguilla rostrata) receiving hormonal injections intended to induce maturation. Five eels treated with extracts of carp pituitaries became at least partially mature, while 6 eels treated with ovine-luteinizing hormone remained unaffected (immature). Immature eels were more active nocturnally and showed peaks of activity at light-dark transitions. Maturing eels were equally active by day and by night, but remained responsive to light-dark transitions. In constant darkness both groups increased their activity at times corresponding to expected light-off, suggesting an innate timing mechanism. When maturing eels were subjected to constant light and photoperiod phase-shifts, they displayed transients which further exemplified the use of a biological clock. The significance of these findings relative to the natural spawning behavior of eels is discussed.  相似文献

Studies on the relative growth and production of the estuary grouper Epinephelus salmoides Maxwell were conducted in floating net-cages at 5 different stocking densities to determine the optimal level for stocking for commercial culture. The fish were stocked at densities of 15, 30, 60, 90 and 120 fish per m3, and reared for a period of 8 months. Results of the present study indicated that fish stocked at a density of 60 fish m-3 grew equally fast and showed a food conversion ratio, mortality rate, and condition factor comparable to those at the lower stocking densities of 15 and 30 fish m-3. At the end of the experiments, net-yield and production at this level of stocking density (60 fish m-3) were not significantly different from those at the higher stocking densities of 90 and 120 fish m-3, but showed increases of 86.7% over those at a stocking density of 30 fish m-3 and 294.2% over those at a stocking density of 15 fish m-3. The stocking density of 60 fish m-3 is therefore taken as the optimal stocking rate for economical production of estuary groupers in floating net-cages. The estuary groupers take 7 to 8 months to grow from 15–16 g to marketable size (>500 g) at a stocking density of 15 fish m-3, 8 to 9 months at a stocking density of 30 to 60 fish m-3 and 11 to 12 months at 90 to 120 fish m-3.  相似文献

Since Mytilus edulis L. is a biomass dominant in the Baltic much interest is focused on the ecology of the species. In this paper an attempt is made to quantitatively cover the reproductive cycle of a Baltic M. edulis population in order to provide data for energy flow models and to discuss aspects of recruitment in this species. Histological preparations of gonads showed that gametogenesis started with declining temperatures in autumn and proceeded very slowly through winter. At the beginning of March when food was supplied during the spring phytoplankton bloom, rapid maturation took place. This was also revealed by an increase in meat weight of the mussels. Only one spawning period was recorded, from the middle of May until the beginning of June, due to food being strongly limited to the population during the rest of the year. The length of the larval period was estimated as being 5 to 6 wk and settlement was registered from the end of June through July. In general the large annual variations found in the Baltic with regard to temperature and food abundance give rise to a more marked annual pattern in the reproductive cycle than is encountered in other seas. Fecundity was assessed for two populations from 4-and 15-m depths from studies covering two annual cycles of the changes in the relation of shell length — meat weight. The size-related fecundity was found to be equal in both populations and related to food abundance and not to growth or age. Fecundity, expressed as weight loss at spawning, ranged from 0% in 2-mm mussels and increased from 38 to 52% in 10-to 30-mm mussels. The fecundity as percentage of biomass in full-grown Baltic M. edulis is of similar magnitude as in full-grown mussels from other areas despite the smaller size of Baltic mussels. The reproductive output for the total 160 km2 research area was calculated as being 1 200 tons dry weight or 80% of the standing stock, which, due to the particular features of the Baltic M. edulis population probably represents the larger part of the total mussel production. This reproductive output, calculated as 8·107 eggs·m-2 and corresponding to 50% of the total annual zooplankton production, may thus consitute an important food source for herring larvae and carnivorous zooplankton. Recruitment was divided into two phases: (1) Recruitment of juveniles (=settlement of larvae), and (2) recruitment to breeding stock. Monitoring studies of settlement on ropes and the year round presence of high abundances of mussels <2 mm indicate that settlement is in excess of the demands for maintaining population size and that most settled mussels form a pool of competitively suppressed non-growing individuals. Not until death of an already established mussel will these become recruited to the breeding population. Thus recruitment is possible throughout the year which stabilizes the population and maintains it near the carrying capacity of the area with regard to food and space availability.  相似文献

Despite intensive sampling efforts in coral reefs, densities and species richness of anguilliform fishes (eels) are difficult to quantify because these fishes evade classical sampling methods such as underwater visual census and rotenone poisoning. An alternative method revealed that in New Caledonia, eels are far more abundant and diverse than previously suspected. We analysed the stomach contents of two species of sea snakes that feed on eels (Laticauda laticaudata and L. saintgironsi). This technique is feasible because the snakes return to land to digest their prey, and (since they swallow their prey whole) undigested food items are identifiable. The snakes’ diet consisted almost entirely (99.6%) of eels and included 14 species previously unrecorded from the area. Very large populations of snakes occur in the study area (e.g. at least 1,500 individuals on a small coral islet). The snakes capture approximately 36,000 eels (972 kg) per year, suggesting that eels and snakes play key roles in the functioning of this reef ecosystem.  相似文献

Migrating animals face numerous mortality risks, such as novel predators with which they may not be accustomed. Most animals can recognize predators innately; however, additional predator information can be collected to enhance familiarity. Because migrating birds rarely participate in mobs, they may seek alternative information sources such as cues provided by other birds that can provide information on predator location, identity, and degree of threat. We predicted that Nearctic–Neotropical migrants (hereafter, “migrants”) would react to vocal antipredator cues (e.g., mob-calls) of species residing in areas through which they migrate. To test this, we conducted experiments in Belize during spring migration, using playbacks of mob-calls of black-capped chickadees (Poecile atricapillus) and blue-gray tanagers (Thraupis episcopus); tanagers are familiar to all birds in Belize; chickadees are novel to residents but familiar to migrants. This also allowed us to assess response to novel and out-of-context antipredator signals. Resident birds did not respond to novel chickadee mob-calls, but did respond to familiar tanager calls. Birds overwintering south of our study area, which were migrating during our study, responded most strongly to chickadee playbacks. Conversely, individuals of species that include our study area in their winter range did not respond to either playback. This is the first evidence that birds react to vocal antipredator cues during migration, which may be a strategy used by migrants to learn about predators. Although residents failed to recognize a foreign cue, migrating birds responded most strongly to the out-of-context chickadee cue, associated with breeding grounds >2,000 km northward. A territorial male can shift the location of its territory from year to year in order to increase its quality. The male can base its decision on environmental cues or else on its breeding experiences (when territory shift is caused by breeding failure in previous seasons). We tested these possible mechanisms of territory choice in the sedge warbler (Acrocephalus schoenobaenus), a territorial migrating passerine that occupies wetlands. This species bases its territory choices on an environmental cue: tall wetland vegetation cover. We found that the magnitude of territory quality improvement between seasons (measured as the area of tall wetland vegetation) increased throughout the early stages of a male's breeding career as a result of territory shifts dependent on the earliness of arrival. The distance the territory was shifted between seasons depended negatively on the previous year's territory quality and, less clearly, on the previous year's mating success. On the other hand, previous mating or nesting success had no influence on territory quality improvement between seasons as measured in terms of vegetation. The results imply that tall wetland vegetation is a long-term, effective environmental cue and that a preference for territories in which this type of landcover prevails has evolved into a rigid behavioral mechanism, supplemented by short-term individual experiences of breeding failure.  相似文献

Bay anchovy (Anchoa mitchilli) eggs were stocked at densities from 0.5 to 32.0 l-1 and larvae were fed on wild plankton (copepod nauplii) in concentrations that ranged from 50 to 5000 prey l-1. Lined sole (Achirus lineatus) eggs were stocked at 0.5 to 16.0 l-1 and larvae were fed wild plankton at concentrations from 50 to 1000 prey l-1. Some larvae of each species survived at all stock and food levels to the transformation stage at 16 days after hatching. Survival rates for both species exceeded 40% when food concentration was 1000 l-1 or higher. Growth and dry weight yields also increased significantly at the higher food concentrations. Effects of initial stocking density were not well defined, but both survival and growth decreased at the highest stocking rates. Standardized culture of bay anchovy and lined sole larvae can be based on a food concentration of 1000 copepod nauplii l-1 to routinely produce healthy larvae.  相似文献

Concentrations of zinc and cadmium in whole soft parts of mussels, Mytilus edulis (L.), collected from 54 locations in Scandinavian waters were determined. Local variations in concentrations of the two metals found in samples taken close to industrial sources of zinc and cadmium confirmed the ability of the mussel to act as an accurate indicator of pollution by these metals over the entire range of salinities in which this species can exist. In addition, offshore samples remote from industrial discharges revealed higher concentrations of zinc and cadmium in mussels from lowsalinity areas (Gulf of Finland, Southern Bothnian Sea, Baltic proper) than in those from high-salinity areas (Kattegat, Eastern Skagerrak). Major decreases in metal concentrations present in the mussel were apparent in the regions of the Sound and the Great Belt, which are areas of rapid salinity change due to mixing of Baltic water with water from Kattegat. Comparison of these results with those reported for zinc and cadmium in water throughout the study area suggested the existence of a higher biological availability of these metals in regions of low salinity; possible reasons for this are discussed. Data from the present survey are also compared to those reported for mussels taken elsewhere. This comparison reveals the Baltic area to be considerably polluted by trace metals; in contrast, the waters of Kattegat and skagerrak are considered to be relatively unpolluted.  相似文献

Recruitment of the European eel is in decline since three decades. So far, the reasons of the decline have not been fully understood. Beside other factors, infection with the exotic swimbladder parasite Anguillicoloides crassus has been discussed as a threat to the species. In the present study monitoring results for A. crassus in eels from North German waters are presented. Between 1996 and 2011, the swimbladders of 17,219 eels from eight freshwater and coastal water areas were analyzed. Prevalence, abundance of parasites, infection intensity and severity of the damage to the swimbladder were recorded by visual inspection. In the freshwaters the prevalence was in the range of 65–83 %, whereas significantly lower values were found in the brackish waters. The differences were less clear for infection intensity but significantly lower values were found in the outermost location in the Baltic Sea. Mean damage to the swimbladders was highest in eels from the Rivers Weser and Elbe and lowest in the Baltic coastal waters. Prevalence and damage degree were stable in all waters except for two rivers, where a decreasing trend in infection intensity was found.  相似文献

Abstract: Sport‐fish introductions are now recognized as an important cause of amphibian decline, but few researchers have quantified the demographic responses of amphibians to current options in fisheries management designed to minimize effects on sensitive amphibians. Demographic analyses with mark–recapture data allow researchers to assess the relative importance of survival, local recruitment, and migration to changes in population densities. I conducted a 4‐year, replicated whole‐lake experiment in the Klamath Mountains of northern California (U.S.A.) to quantify changes in population density, survival, population growth rate, and recruitment of the Cascades frog (Rana cascadae) in response to manipulations of non‐native fish populations. I compared responses of the frogs in lakes where fish were removed, in lakes in their naturally fish‐free state, and in lakes where fish remained that were either stocked annually or no longer being stocked. Within 3 years of fish removals from 3 lakes, frog densities increased by a factor of 13.6. The survival of young adult frogs increased from 59% to 94%, and realized population growth and recruitment rates at the fish‐removal lakes were more than twice as high as the rates for fish‐free reference lakes and lakes that contained fish. Population growth in the fish‐removal lakes was likely due to better on‐site recruitment of frogs to later life stages rather than increased immigration. The effects on R. cascadae of suspending stocking were ambiguous and suggested no direct benefit to amphibians. With amphibians declining worldwide, these results show that active restoration can slow or reverse the decline of species affected by fish stocking within a short time frame.  相似文献

All bivalves investigated (Astarte borealis, Astarte elliptica, Macoma calcarea, Cyprina islandica, Macoma baltica, Cardium lamarcki) are dioecious. The mean egg-diameters were determined by a series of measurements for 6 bivalves and compared with data from other authors. M. calcarea does not have a direct non-pelagic larval development as previously assumed, but probably produces pelagic planktotrophic larvae. The arctic species exhibit no modification of their mode of development in the boreal area. The boreal forms spawn over a relatively short period in spring and summer. The arctic forms revealed, over long periods, ripe eggs and sperms. Apparently they begin to spawn in winter or early spring. This extension and shift of the spawning season represents adaptation of the Aretic species to the specific conditions of the Baltic Sea. The number of eggs laid by the most important bivalves were determined and correlated with the larval ecology and length of generation time.  相似文献
