Introduction  

The capability of Halimione portulacoides, Spartina maritima, and Sarcocornia fruticosa (halophytes very commonly found in salt marshes from Mediterranean areas) for enhancing remediation of tributyltin (TBT) from estuarine sediments was investigated, using different experimental conditions.

Introduction  

Five liver samples of two different ray species (Gymnura altavela and Zapteryx brevirostris) off the coast of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, were analyzed for their pollution with anthropogenic and naturally occurring organohalogen compounds.

This paper analyses the presence of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in escaped: farmed and wild salmons in southern Chile, analysing their concentrations and congener profiles in two species (Oncorhynchus kisutch and Oncorhynchus mykiss).

Organochlorine residues (PCBs and DDTs) in two Torpedinid species liver from the Southeastern Mediterranean Sea

Purpose  

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) and PCB congeners accumulation profile were measured in the liver of two torpedinid species (Torpedo nobiliana and Torpedo marmorata) from the Mediterranean Sea (Adriatic Sea) in order to investigate the relative toxicological impact of these highly toxic PCBs in the organisms in question.     

Characterization of phenol degradation by high-efficiency binary mixed culture

Background, aim, and scope  

Two new high phenol-degrading strains, Micrococcus sp. and Alcaligenes faecalis JH 1013, were isolated. The two isolates could grow aerobically in mineral salts medium containing phenol as a sole carbon source at concentration of 3,000 mg L⁻¹. It was found that the binary mixed culture of the two isolates possessed good potential for phenol removal.     

Combined biodegradation and ozonation for removal of tannins and dyes for the reduction of pollution loads

Purpose  

Tannins and dyes pose major threat to the environment by generating huge pollution problem. Biodegradation of wattle extract, chrome tannin and dye compounds using suitable fungal culture namely Aspergillus niger, Penicillium sp. were carried out. In addition to these, ozone treatment was carried out to get higher degradation rate.     

Degradation of o-toluidine by fluidized-bed Fenton process: statistical and kinetic study

Background, aim, and scope  

The optimal conditions of o-toluidine degradation by fluidized-bed Fenton process were determined using Box–Behnken designs (BBD). The BBD can be used to find the optimal conditions in multivariable systems. The optimal conditions obtained by the design were further applied in the kinetic analysis of o-toluidine oxidation in fluidized-bed Fenton process.
