Forty-three female Euphausia superba were collected from three sites in Prydz Bay, Antarctica in January 1985. Most gravid females took 3 to 14 d to spawn after capture and some less mature females released eggs after 21 d. Most females spawned only once; overall mean brood size was 2 809 eggs and mean hatchability for eggs from the premoult females was 69.7%. For seven females spawning a second time, overall mean brood size was 597 eggs. Mean hatchability for second-spawn eggs from five premoult females was 67.1%. Possible origins of the second-spawned eggs were small numbers of matured eggs left in the ovaries after the first spawning or eggs developed from those of peripheral nucleolus and vitellogenic stages. Throughout the 8 wk of observations, there was no apparent development of eggs in females which had released all their eggs at one spawning.  相似文献

Samples of Benthosema pterotum (Alcock) were obtained from the Arabian Sea (1976, 1979, 1981, 1983, 1984), off Mozambique (1978) and from the Bay of Bengal (1979). The sexual maturity stages are described. For females, the size of the largest oocytes was found to be most useful for size of the largest oocytes was found to be most useful for assessing maturity. Mature and spawning fish were found in all seasons. Samples from November 1983 differed from all others in having very few mature females. A few apparently spent fish were observed in July to August 1979 and November 1983. Some females mature at 25 mm and males at 20 mm, whereas others can still be immature at 45 and 40 mm, respectively. Of the total number of stations, four had significantly more males than females, twelve significantly more females, and forty-seven displayed no difference in the sex ratios. The vertical migration of the mature and spawning fish did not differ significantly from that of other individuals. Batch fecundity ranged from ca. 200 to 3 000 eggs fish ranging from 27 to 52 mm, relative fecundity from ca. 2 000 to 7 000 eggs g-1 maternal dry weight. There are indications that B. pterotum spawns only once, but no firm conclusions could be drawn.  相似文献

We assessed the ontogenetic changes in protein content and free amino acids (FAA) in eggs and early larvae of Engraulis ringens (anchoveta) off central Chile on different dates during the spawning season. On all sampling dates, a reduction in embryonic yolk-sac volume, proteins and FAA concentrations occurred during development. Protein electrophoresis (SDS–PAGE) of eggs and larvae showed at least 22 protein bands: 11 were consumed early and not detected after hatching. The proportion of essential FAA (EFAA) was higher than the proportion of non-essential FAA (NEFAA) in early eggs and in 7 day-old larvae (82.5-73% EFAA respectively). During egg development, the FAA pool was dominated by leucine, alanine and lysine, three amino acids contributing 35–44% of the total FAA in eggs. During larval development, histidine was the most abundant FAA. In July, total FAA constituted 13–18% of the egg dry weight. A similar proportion (45–51%) occurred in July between protein plus FAA and total lipids. The differences in egg size during the spawning season along with variability in batch composition suggests that the female spawning condition is a major factor determining egg quality and early offspring success.  相似文献

Genes of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) are remarkably polymorphic. Several selection mechanisms have been invoked to account for this diversity, including disassortative mating preferences. In addition, eggs may discriminate between sperm based on MHC. To investigate the effects of MHC-genotype on fertilization success, we obtained mature gametes from ripe Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus) males and females captured on spawning grounds. The eggs of each female were divided into two batches, and by letting each of 2 males fertilize 1 of the batches, we obtained a total of 36 half-sibling batch-pairs. The semen was diluted to ensure that the two males in each half-sibling batch-pair contributed with the same number of sperm cells. We found that MHC-heterozygous males had significantly higher fertilization success than MHC-homozygous males and neither initial spermatocrit, sperm motility nor swimming velocity co-varied with difference in fertilization success. There was no effect of female genotype or female-male MHC-similarity on fertilization success. However, one MHC-allele was associated with increased fertilization success. It seems plausible that the difference in fertilization success between homo- and heterozygous males may be due to MHC-dependent sperm selection by the ovum.Communicated by M. Abrahams  相似文献

Hepatic mixed-function oxidases (MFOs) were measured in the bothid flatfishes Citharicthys sordidus and C. stigmaeus from relatively uncontaminated and from polluted coastal populations of California, USA, at various times of the year during 1979–1980 and in individuals fed crude oil and polychlorinated biphenyl-augmented food in the laboratory. For C. sordidus, aryl hydrocarbon hydroxylase (AHH) specific activity was generally highest around the Los Angeles County sewage outfall on the Palos Verdes Shelf, intermediate near the 7-mile Hyperion sewage outfall in Santa Monica Bay and around a petroleum seep in the Santa Barbara Channel, and lowest in relatively unpolluted Monterey Bay. For C. stigmaeus, which had about ten times less specific activity than the foregoing species, specimens from the Santa Barbara petroleum seep had significantly greater AHH specific activity than those from Monterey Bay. Fishes from contaminated environments also showed increases of microsomal proteins with molecular weights of 56, 54, 57 and 46×103; moreover, the content of cytochrome P-450 was elevated in specimens of C. sordidus from such environments. Augmentation of food with seep oil or polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) induced significant increases in the specific activity of AHH and amounts of microsomal proteins in C. stigmaeus. Thus, these two species of flatfishes are good candidates for monitoring biologically meaningful levels of petroleum and polychlorinated biphenyls in contaminated environments. Moreover, the mixed function oxidase pattern in fish populations from the Santa Barbara petroleum seep is evidently a functional adaptation to chronic intake of petroleum hydrocarbons.  相似文献

Phenotypic plasticity in response to environmental variability is one of the main characteristics of cephalopods. This study compares growth and life span of Octopus tehuelchus in different coastal environments of San Matías Gulf (Patagonia) at three different periods. The progression of maturity jointly with modal progression analysis and the detection of hatchlings in the natural environment were used to differentiate cohorts and assign ages. Growth was described using the oscillatory von Bertalanffy growth model. Within San Antonio Bay, O. tehuelchus seems to have the most favourable conditions for an extended spawning season and the development of two sub-annual cohorts. O. tehuelchus growth is strongly seasonal with slow growth rates during winter. There were differences in the growth pattern between sites and particularly between sub-annual cohorts in San Antonio Bay. The growth pattern in each site seems to be similar along the last 26 years. The results of our study make evident the variability and plasticity of O. tehuelchus in response to the environment.  相似文献

Summary Pseudocrenilabrus multicolor is an iteroparous maternal mouthbrooding cichlid fish living in small and shallow waters in East Africa. It is subjected to large seasonal variations of population density. Laboratory experiments show that with increasing density and time after spawning the number of offspring present in the mouth decreased. By experimentally varying density and the numbers of fertilized and unfertilized eggs in the mouth at the end of spawning the following causes of brood size reduction were identified: (1) At high densities some of the spawned eggs are stolen by conspecifics before they are taken into the mouth. Of the eggs taken up a considerable proportion is unfertilized. (2) Unfertilized eggs are selectively swallowed from day 2 to day 5 after spawning. (3) Some of the fertilized eggs are also swallowed during mouthbrooding. (4) If the number of eggs in the mouth falls below a critical value of approximately 20% of the number of eggs spawned, they are all swallowed. By contrast, predation by conspecifics is insignificant as long as the brood is in the mother's mouth. The causes and functions of the mother's filial cannibalism are discussed.  相似文献

There has been much modeling and experimentation on factors affecting fertilization success in free-spawning marine invertebrates, but for many species spawning has rarely been observed in nature, if at all, and then mostly qualitatively. Understanding the dynamics of spawning and fertilization is especially important for species, such as the green sea urchin, Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis (O.F. Müller), that have been widely depleted by harvesting. Time-integrated fertilization assays provide measures of sperm-availability adjacent to spawning populations for extended periods and with unprecedented temporal resolution. In such assays unfertilized eggs are held in baskets permeable to sperm and suspended in the water column as long as the eggs remain viable. In a consecutive series of 24- to 72-h assays the time course and spatial extent of sperm availability were measured near an aggregation of 250 sea urchins suspended in a cage at a field site in West Boothbay Harbor, Maine, USA. The assays were conducted in March and April, 2000, the spawning season of the green sea urchin. The distribution of embryonic stages within the assays revealed fine-scale temporal information on the timing of fertilization. The time series of multiple assays indicated that over a substantial portion of the spawning season there was an almost continuous low level of male spawning, a pattern consistent with a slow decline in gonad index observed in both male and female urchins. Fertilization rates averaged only 17% for the eggs in the basket nearest the spawning urchins (20 cm away), and the rates declined sharply over a distance of <1 m. Thus, despite the potential benefits of long egg life in integrating sperm supply over several days, the spatial effects on fertilization success were marked. Owing to the urchins' captivity and the lack of site replication, the generality of the observed spawning pattern must be confirmed. Nonetheless, the method lends itself to wider application among natural populations.  相似文献

Blooms of the toxic dinoflagellate Heterocapsa circularisquama cause massive bivalve kills in Japan. Mariculture of the Japanese pearl oyster, Pinctada fucata martensii, is the industry most affected by these blooms, especially in Ago Bay, Mie Prefecture, where they are frequent, cause mass mortality of oysters, and overlap with their spawning season. The goal of this August 2009 study was to assess the effects of a toxic strain of H. circularisquama isolated from Ago Bay on gametes, fertilization, and embryo development of pearl oysters. Spermatozoa, eggs, spermatozoa and eggs, and fertilized eggs of pearl oysters from Ago Bay were exposed to H. circularisquama at cell densities reported during the bloom (10–104 cells mL?1) for different periods of time. The concentration of H. circularisquama, exposure duration, and their interactions all had significant effects on gamete quality, fertilization, and embryo development. The motility and swimming velocity of spermatozoa, egg viability, fertilization, and embryo development rate were significantly reduced in all concentrations, with a cell density of 10 cells mL?1 determined to be the critical density of H. circularisquama for deleterious effects. This is the first evidence of inimical effects of an HAB species on bivalve spermatozoa upon direct exposure. Further field and laboratory studies are required to investigate the potential effects of H. circularisquama blooms on the reproduction and recruitment of Japanese pearl oysters and other bivalves.  相似文献

Semi-lunar spawning in the intertidal zone has been observed in many teleost species. Because the eggs of these species are placed at elevations reached only by the highest tides, the timing of hatching is critical to survival. To quantify and clarify the relationship between development rate, hatching, and survival we developed a computer model that simulated the reproductive strategy in one such species, Fundulus heteroclitus (Linnaeus). We determined expected hatching success for F. heteroclitus embryos as a function of development rate by simulating spawning, embryo development, and hatching of F. heteroclitus embryos in Delaware Bay. Our simulation analysis included manipulation of several model parameters. The results indicated that there is balancing selection acting on development rate in this species. In particular, false hatching cues (rainfall) increased mortality among embryos with very fast and very slow development rates. The simulation results did not appear susceptible to manipulation of the sensitivity of embryos to false hatching cues. The timing of spawning relative to the spring tides determines which development rate is optimal in terms of average hatching success. Including a constant daily mortality rate in our simulations, as a simple model of predation and/or disease, shifted the optimized development rates to faster values. The location of spawning grounds of the squid Loligo vulgaris reynaudii (D'Orbigny) was investigated in the years 1988–1990. At least 39 spawning sites were found during this period along the inshore areas of the Eastern Cape coastline between Algoa Bay and Plettenberg Bay. The substrate chosen for egg laying was mostly fine sand or flat reef, frequently in large and relatively shettered bays. Spawning was found to occur sporadically throughout the year, and some spawning sites were used repeatedly within a particular year and in subsequent years. Squid migrate in discrete schools separated by sex in the vicinity of the spawning sites; these schools mix during spawning. Mating and egg deposition behaviour is described from observations made on the spawning grounds. Cannibalism was seen on a number of occasions, but no post-spawning mortality was recorded. Egg beds consisted mostly of large concentrations of egg strands (>3 m in diameter), with smaller aggregations of one to ten egg strands surrounding these, with single strands in the immediate vicinity. Three basic patterns of echotraces were identified and interpreted according to diving observations. These patterns were classified as loose patches, dense patches, and complex patterns. The first two represent non-spawning schooling patterns and the third, mating and egg laying behaviour. This observation led to the general classification of squid aggregations: schools (non-spawning mode) and concentrations (spawning mode). Concentrations as far as Loligo vulgaris reynaudii was concerned were further divided into two patterns: suprabenthic and benthic (spawning) squid.  相似文献

Variation in maternal reproductive traits was examined in field and reared populations of a geographically widespread reef fish, Pomacentrus coelestis (Pomacentridae), drawn from three different latitudes in Japan. Size-specific clutch size and clutch weight of wild fish increased with increasing latitude. Conversely, latitudinal variation in egg size of wild fish was obscure in same-season comparisons, probably because of the temperature effect on egg size. Common-environment experiments conducted at three temperatures showed that egg size decreased with increasing temperature in all populations. In the experiments, egg size, clutch size and clutch weight differed among populations at all temperatures, showing clear latitudinal clines. Females from low latitude spawned larger eggs at every experimental temperature. Size-specific clutch size and weight were greater in females from high latitude. Thus, the northern fish had a larger reproductive output per spawning and a larger number of smaller eggs in a spawning. Such interpopualtion variation in this fish is likely to be partially genetically based, although environmental effects on the variation cannot be entirely ruled out. This study provides evidence of potential latitudinal variation in the egg size and number in a coastal fish, by common-environment experiments. The close correspondence between latitudes and these maternal reproductive traits may be a consequence of local adaptation.  相似文献

Spawning of the chiton Acanthopleura japonica was examined in 1983 and 1984, by means of consecutive sampling of newly spawned eggs from Tanabe Bay, Japan. Abundant collection of the eggs was recorded just before the high tide peaks on the days around spring tide, predominantly in the morning, for 7 to 9d, and subordinately in the afternnon for 3 to 4d. In the period September 1986 to August 1987 fish were captured once a month, using an otter trawl, from the intertidal and subtidal regions of Sulaibikhat Bay, Kuwait. Correlation analysis revealed that numbers were not directly related to temperature at the time of sampling. The recruitment of large numbers of young of the year Liza carinata (Valenciennes) during March was related to low temperatures in November, the probable time of spawning of this species. Salinity at the time of sampling was inversely correlated with numbers. This result indicates that large numbers of 0+fish recruit to the Bay during the period of maximum fresh water outflow through the Shatt-al-Arab. Numbers of fish were significantly greater in the intertidal region, where they were present almost entirely as 0 group fish, than in the subtidal. The three dominant species of the assemblage are shown to use the two depth intervals in differnt ways. L. carinata was capture a almost exclusively in the intertidal region as 0+ fish. Pomadasys stridens (Forsskål) was captured as 0+ fish in both the intertidal and subtidal regions but in greater numbers in the intertidal region. Leiognathus brevirostris (Valenciennes) was captured as small, mostly 0+ individuals in the intertidal region and as larger fish in the subtidal region. The use made by the smaller fish of the intertidal region is related to the avoidance of sublittoral predators and reduction of intraspecific competition, whilst larger fish in the sublittoral region may be avoiding predation by piscivorous birds.  相似文献

Field studies were conducted in Johnson Key Basin, Florida Bay, USA from September 2002 through September 2004 to examine physiological, ecological, and behavioral characteristics of the gulf toadfish, Opsanus beta (Goode and Bean in Proc US Natl Mes 3:333–345, 1880), in relation to nitrogen metabolism, habitat usage, and spawning. Fish collected 5 cm above sediments in experimental shelters (epibenthic) were compared with those collected by throw traps which were found on or burrowing within sediments. The relationship between microhabitat ammonia and urea excretion, as determined by the enzymatic activity of glutamine synthetase (GS), was examined. The hypothesis tested was that O. beta occupying epibenthic nests were less ureotelic with lower GS activities than non-nesting individuals on/in sediments, due to a decreased environmental ammonia burden. Porewater total ammonia (T Amm) concentrations at a sediment depth of 5 cm, i.e., the approximate depth of burrowing toadfish, ranged from 0 to 106.5 μmol N l−1 while the pH ranged from 7.48 to 9.14. There was a weak but significant correlation between environmental ammonia (NH3) concentration and hepatic GS activity for epibenthic toadfish (P < 0.001, r 2 = 0.10), but not for burrowing toadfish. Mean urea-N and T Amm concentrations within shelters occupied by toadfish (n = 281) were 9.8 ± 0.83 μmol N l−1 and 13.0 ± 0.7 μmol N l−1, respectively. As predicted, hepatic GS activity was significantly lower in epibenthic toadfish captured in shelters (4.40 ± 0.24 μmol min−1 g−1; n = 281) as compared to individuals on/in sediments (6.61 ± 0.47 μmol min−1 g−1; n = 128). Glutamine synthetase activity generally peaked in March (spawning season) and was lowest in July. Gender differences in hepatic and branchial GS activity were also found during the spawning season, which is attributable to the fact that males brood and guard offspring in their epibenthic nests while females often rest on or burrow into the sediments. Finally, hepatic and branchial GS appeared to have different patterns of enzymatic activity suggesting functional differences in gene expression.  相似文献

A technique for preparing seawater suspensions of Kuwait oil and Corexit was developed. The resulting hydrocarbon concentrations were analysed by gas-chromatography and spectrofluorometric methods and the stability of the suspensions with time was determined. It was established that the suspensions have an effective stability from Days 3 to 15 after preparation, since in this period the concentration varies within a relatively narrow range. Adult female Tisbe bulbisetosa appeared to be quite tolerant of this type of hydrocarbon suspension, in short-term experiments, especially considering that the concentrations used in the bioassays were about 200 times higher than those measured in a relatively polluted area of the lagoon of Venice. Long-term effects on number of eggs produced, number of nauplii and hatching success for females of the third and fourth generations, subject to continuous exposure, were negligible compared with controls.  相似文献

The relationship between sperm characteristics and reproductive success was examined in male herring, Clupea harengus L. Males were categorised as being first-time or repeat spawners on the basis of their age; they were also grouped according to whether their sperm were immediately active and exhibited forward motion on contact with seawater (FM) or had little or only vibratory motion (VM). Unlike the Pacific herring C. pallasii Valencienes, Atlantic herring sperm is usually motile on contact with seawater. The age, weight and gonadosomatic index (testes mass as a percentage of somatic mass = GSI) were measured and used as characteristics for individual fish. Sperm traits measured were (1) adenosine triphosphate (ATP) concentration, (2) sperm count, (3) duration of sperm motility. Reproductive success for each male was estimated from the fertilisation rate and from the length of larvae at hatching. Fertilisation rates for all fish were generally >80%. The ATP concentration of non-activated spermatozoa was negatively correlated with fertilisation rate. Among repeat spawners, fish with higher GSIs produced larvae that were larger at hatching. Although VM sperm fertilised eggs at rates equivalent to fertilisation by FM sperm, the larvae produced by VM sperm were significantly smaller at hatching. Larval length tended to increase in parallel with the duration of sperm motility, but the relationship was not significant in these tests. The results did not indicate any age or size pattern to spawning readiness in male herring. Sperm that are not yet ready to be shed are not fully motile on contact with seawater, but are still capable of fertilising eggs that hatch successfully. There is likely to be a progression of males which come into spawning readiness within a spawning shoal; therefore it is possible that paternal influences would result in a progressive decrease in larval size over the spawning period in winter-spawning Celtic Sea herring. It has been presumed that intertidal spawning by Limulus polyphemus minimizes the loss of egges to subtidal predators; however, this strategy involves considerable risks. Massive beach strandings of adults accompany seasonal spawning migrations of crabs along Cape May in Delaware Bay, (USA). At least 190000 horseshoe crabs, approximating 10% of the adult population, died from beach stranding along the New Jersey shore of Delaware Bay during the 1986 (May to June) spawning season. Abnormalities of the telson (which is used in righting behavior) were significantly more common among stranded crabs than among individuals actively spawning on the intertidal beach. The number of stranded crabs per day was not correlated with tidal height or environmental variables (wind speed, wave height) which characterized the conditions at spawning. A complex suite of factors, including the size of the available spawning population, tidal and weather conditions, and beach slope, influence the number stranded during the breeding season. Horseshoe crab stranding results in a large loss of gravid females from the population, and may represent a major input of organic matter to intertidal sandy beaches in certain regions of Delaware Bay.  相似文献

Traditionally, sciaenid eggs have been identified based on morphological characteristics such as size, number of oil globules and/or pigmentation patterns. Identification of sciaenid eggs by these procedures is time consuming and often inaccurate due to considerable egg size overlap among species. The utilization of molecular techniques for the identification of economically important species has become a fundamental component in ecological studies involving fish eggs and larvae. This study reports the development of a series of both multiplex and individual polymerase chain reactions to identify the eggs of 11 sciaenid species commonly found in the Gulf of Mexico and estuaries near Port Aransas and Corpus Christi, TX, USA. Following method development, the discriminatory power of the assay was first determined with samples from adult fish collected from Aransas and Corpus Christi Bays, Galveston Bay and the lower Laguna Madre in northern Mexico. Most (97%) of these fishes were correctly identified to the level of species. To demonstrate the applicability of the assay, wild fish eggs were collected and analyzed from the Aransas Pass tidal inlet from September through December 2005. During this period, the eggs of four target species were positively identified which was in keeping with current knowledge regarding the spawning areas and seasons of these sciaenids based on the presence of mature females, eggs and/or larvae. Future use of this method can provide valuable information to better discriminate spawning sites and seasons of these species.  相似文献

Male reproductive success of the broadcast-spawning gorgonian, Plexaura kuna Lasker, Kim and Coffroth, 1996, was measured in June 1994 and June and July 1995 at two sites in the San Blas Islands, Panamá in order to determine the environmental and biotic factors affecting individual reproductive success. Developing embryos were collected in the field during natural spawning events, and paternity determined using randomly amplified polymorphic DNA markers. Analyses of F1 progeny from defined laboratory matings established that the markers were inherited in Mendelian fashion, and allowed the determination of the zygosities of the markers. P. kuna is clonal, but male reproductive success was not strictly proportional to clone size. Proximity to females appeared to have a greater effect on male reproductive success than clone size, and on both reefs the most successful male clone was the one closest to the spawning female clone. Current direction and transport of gametes by eddies explained variation in paternity assignments between nights. Clonal propagation allows clones to grow and spread toward each other, and may enhance male reproductive success. Received: 1 April 1997 / Accepted: 11 February 1998  相似文献
