Water content in the tissues, tissue proportions, and content and concentrations of copper, zinc, iron, cadmium, manganese, and cobalt were determined in male shore crabs Carcinus maenas of different sizes. Average wet to dry weight ratios in midgut gland, gills, muscle, exoskeleton, stomach, heart, testes, hypodermis, and haemolymph were 5.3, 9.5, 4.1, 1.5, 4.8, 6.1, 3.8, 4.7, and 13, respectively. The water content in the soft tissues generally increased with increasing size of the crabs (except in testes). Dry midgut gland, gills, muscle, exoskeleton, stomach, heart, testes, hypodermis, and haemolymph constituted 4, 0.9, 20, 68, 0.5, 0.12, 0.5, 0.7 and 5.3%, respectively, of the body dry weight. Dry midgut gland, gills, stomach, hypodermis, and haemolymph constituted a larger proportion of the body weight in small than in large crabs, whereas the opposite was the case for exoskeleton. Protein concentrations in the haemolymph decreased with size whereas haemolymph volume increased. Seventy percent of the copper body burden was located in the haemolymph. The majority of zinc (61%) occurred in muscle, whereas the midgut gland was the major site of cadmium storage (89%). The exoskeleton contained the major part of the body burden of iron (71%) and manganese (95%). Most of the cobalt body burden was located in the exoskeleton (45%) and haemolymph (44%). As tissue hydration and tissue proportions changed with size, tissue metal concentrations did not necessarily vary identically with size when expressed on a dry weight compared to a wet weight basis. Tissue potassium concentrations were negatively correlated with tissue water contents, indicating that water in tissues with a high wet to dry weight ratio was of extracellular origin. However, comparison of tissue and haemolymph copper levels showed that this extracellular water could not be pure haemolymph as tissue copper concentrations would have been higher than the values actually found.  相似文献

A haemolymph colour index is developed in an attempt to improve the resolution of serum protein data in the characterisation of temporal and spatial changes in the condition and growth of a wild population of Jasus edwardsii. The index can be used as an indicator of nutritional condition if combined with conventional moult staging techniques. Lobsters and haemolymph samples were collected from two high- and two low-growth sites over two fishing seasons. Haemolymph samples were analysed for serum protein and astaxanthin level and categorised according to colour, that is, "pigment stage" (PS). Moult stage data were collected and abdominal and hepatopancreatic tissue analysed for percent dry weight. Haemolymph colour changes from light blue-grey, through beige, to deep orange during the moult cycle. These changes were explained with reference to the major pigment, astaxanthin, which increased from 0.135 mg/l (ǂ.054, n=38) at PS 1 (early intermoult) to 2.670 mg/l (ǂ.599, n=12) at PS 4.5 (late premoult). There were significant increases in percent abdominal and hepatopancreatic dry tissue weight over the moult cycle (Kruskal-Wallis non-parametric ANOVA, P<0.05), especially during intermoult. Serum protein levels increased concomitantly and were significantly correlated with percent dry weight of both tissues (abdomen: r2=0.78, n=871, P<0.001; hepatopancreas: r2=0.64, n=864, P<0.001) There were also significant differences between sites in both PS-specific serum protein and percent dry tissue. Lobster condition differed significantly between sites, probably as a result of temperature-mediated effects on growth rate. The addition of haemolymph pigment to the serum protein index allows the differentiation of lobsters at the beginning, middle and end of intermoult.  相似文献

The influence of moulting and ovarian maturation on cadmium accumulation in the tissues of female shore crabs Carcinus maenas exposed to 1 mg Cd l−1 in the water was investigated. Cadmium accumulation in all tissues examined was markedly increased in crabs in the postmoult stages (A and B) compared to crabs in all other moult stages. During the moult cycle, average cadmium accumulation in the midgut gland ranged from 29 μg Cd g−1 dw at premoult stage (D2) to 589 μg Cd g−1 dw at postmoult stage (A). Average cadmium concentrations in the haemolymph ranged from 0.56 μg Cd ml−1 at intermoult stage (C4) to 4.6 μg Cd ml−1 at postmoult stage (A), while the gills accumulated from 103 μg Cd g−1 dw in intermoult stage (C3) to 352 μg Cd g−1 dw in postmoult stage (A). Cadmium concentration in gills and haemolymph was also significantly higher in crabs in late premoult stage (D3) compared to C4-crabs, while midgut gland cadmium concentration remained elevated in C1- and C3- intermoult stages relative to C4. During ovarian maturation the cadmium accumulation in midgut gland, gills, ovaries and haemolymph decreased. Average cadmium concentration in the midgut gland decreased from 63 μg g−1 dw in ovarian Stage I to 19 μg g−1 dw in ovarian Stage VI. The same pattern was observed for gills, haemolymph and ovaries. The present study demonstrates that cadmium accumulation in the female shore crab strongly depends on the physiological status of the animal. A possible association between physiological calcium requirements and cadmium accumulation during moulting is discussed. Received: 20 January 2000 / Accepted: 20 July 2000  相似文献

The influence of copper(II)chloride on selected key enzymes and metabolites in intermediary metabolism and the energy charge potential of the hyperregulating shore crab, Carcinus maenas (L.) were investigated. Crabs, collected in Odense Fjord, Denmark between September 1989 and May 1990, were exposed to 10 ppm copper(II)chloride, in 10 ppt salinity seawater at 15°C for up to 1 wk. Hexokinase activity was 77% lower in the posterior gills and 60% lower in the midgut gland than in control crabs. Phosphofructokinase activity was reduced in the midgut gland by 82% but was unaffected in the gills. Pyruvate kinase activity was undetectable in the gills of exposed crabs and reduced by 47% in the midgut gland. Citrate synthase activity was depressed by 30% in the posterior gills and unaffected in other tissues. Copper exposure had no apparent effect on tissue cytochrome c oxidase activity. Chela muscle was the only tissue in which copper exposure did not bring about reductions in the enzyme activities tested. As a result of 1 wk of copper exposure the average lactate level increased by 3.5-fold in haemolymph, 9.3-fold in posterior gills and 6.5-fold in midgut gland. The average glucose level was raised by a factor of 6 in the haemolymph, 3.4 in the posterior gills and 1.2 in the midgut gland. Energy charge potential was at a very high level (ca. 0.9) and was unaffected by copper exposure.  相似文献

The relations between genetic variation, physiological condition, size and metal status in the shore crab Carcinus maenas (L.) were investigated. Shore crabs were collected at three sites around the island of Funen, Denmark, and carapace width, colour, moulting stage and major ions and protein in the haemolymph were determined. Concentrations of water, cadmium, copper and zinc in midgut glands, muscles and gills were measured, and allozyme variation at 15 loci was studied. Generally, tissue water content and copper, zinc and cadmium concentrations decreased from the moulting stages C3 over C4 to D crabs, whereas the opposite was true for copper and zinc concentrations in gills and muscle. However, the water content of the tissues increased with the size of the crabs. Since tissue water contents changed consistently over moulting stages, conclusions on changes in metal concentrations sometimes diverged when expressed on a dry versus wet weight basis. Regarding allozymes, esterase, malate dehydrogenase and phosphoglucomutase were polymorphic. The crabs showed a low level of genetic variability for both polymorphism (0.14) and for heterozygosity (0.07) at the three sites. Allelic frequencies showed very low levels of differentiation among the samples, no evidence of inbreeding and no population subdivision. Multilocus heterozygosity was positively correlated with size. Concentrations of copper and zinc in midgut gland, muscle tissue and gill were not correlated with genotype, whereas a weak correlation between phosphoglucomutase genotypes and concentrations of cadmium in the midgut gland was found.Communicated by M. The accumulation of arsenate from seawater by the shore crab Carcinus maenas L. (collected from Odense Fjord, Denmark in 1991 and from Restronguet Creek, UK in 1991) was investigated in a series of laboratory experiments. A field study was also carried out to determine the effects of raised environmental arsenic concentrations on intra-organismal distribution and tissue concentrations. Studies on the influence of nutritional state and sex on accumulation of As(5) from seawater indicated that most of the arsenic taken up from seawater in laboratory experiments was retained in the gills and the midgut gland. Arsenic accumulation exhibited sex-dependent differences which were also evident in correlation analyses carried out between total lipid contents and total arsenic contents of midgut glands of individual crabs. Arsenic concentrations in the gonads of both sexes were strongly influenced by the nutritional state of the crabs. Elevated arsenic concentrations in seawater and food at an arsenic polluted site (Restronguet Creek) significantly influenced arsenic concentrations and distribution among the tissues of C. maenas. Arsenic concentrations and distribution patterns differed markedly from those crabs from an unpolluted site in Odense Fjord. The gills of the crabs from Restronguet Creek contained extremely high arsenic concentrations ranging from 179 to 483 g As g-1 dry wt. These values were even higher than those measured in the gills of Odense crabs that had been exposed to 3 mgl-1 As(5) for 2 wk in the laboratory. Arsenic concentrations in the exoskeleton of Odense Fjord crabs were 15 times lower than those measured in exoskeletons of Restronguet Creek crabs. Approximately 69% of the total body burden of arsenic was located in muscle tissue of crabs from Odense Fjord, whereas the major pool of arsenic (46%) in Restronguet Creek crabs was located in the exoskeleton.  相似文献

Heart rate of Carcinus maenas was recorded continuously for two days in situ, together with water temperature, salinity, depth and light intensity. Of each sex, 25 crabs were used and assigned to groups on the basis of size and colour (the carapace changes colour with prolongation of the intermoult phase). Wet weight:dry weight ratios of midgut gland, muscle, gonads and whole body were examined together with midgut gland lipid content and haemolymph protein concentration. Heart rates and wet wt:dry wt ratios for all the tissues examined were higher in early intermoult than in late intermoult stages of the adult C. maenas (P<0.05). Heart rate, lipid content and haemolymph protein concentrations were higher and wet wt:dry wt ratios of midgut gland, gonads and whole body were lower in juvenile crabs than in adults (P<0.05). The relationship between heart rate and wet wt:dry wt of whole body differed among C. maenas in early and late intermoutl. Heart rate was positively correlated with midgut gland lipid content (a Darwinian fitness parameter) in crabs that were in late intermoult. Physico-chemical environmental parameters, sex and colour accounted for 12% of the variation in heart rate of C. maenas recorded in situ. Temperature and prolonged intermoult were the most important factors influencing heart rate. The findings are discussed in relation to laboratory studies of cardiac activity and observed behaviour of C. maenas in the field.  相似文献

During cadmium uptake by the shore crab Carcinus maenas (L.), cadmium appears in both haemolymph and urine within 1 h, and comes into equilibrium with the haemolymp after some 60 h. The equilibrium concentration for haemolymph cadmium is always considerably less than that of the external medium, whether the latter is close to background level or at the artificially high concentration of 2.2 mg l-1. Despite earlier evidence that cadmium entering the haemolymph is mainly bound to protein, current results show most of this to be freely labile and quickly displaced by cadmium taken up subsequently. There is some evidence to suggest that cadmium is passed on from the haemolymph to the hepatopancreas. A large proportion of whole-body cadmium is adsorbed onto the exoskeleton and gills. The comparatively rapid efflux of 109Cd from loaded crabs over a period of 1 week is mainly due to desorption of this cadmium from the outer body surface.  相似文献

Two heavy metal-binding proteins occur naturally in the midgut glands of Carcinus maenas (L.) collected from the Firth of Clyde, Scotland. These proteins, of approximately 27,000 and 11,500 MW (molecular weight) have previously been described as Cd-binding proteins after their induction by high concentrations of cadmium in the laboratory. The 27,000 MW heavy metal-binding protein is bound to about 0.10 g-at of Cd, 0.70 g-at of Zn and 0.31 g-at of Cu per mole of protein; 7.7, 7.9 and 1.1%, respectively, of the soluble Cd, Zn and Cu in the midgut gland are associated with this 27,000 MW protein (6.7, 1.6 and 0.9% of the total midgut gland Cd, Zn and Cu). The 11,500 MW protein is bound to about 0.04 g-at of Cd, 0.37 g-at of Zn and 1.54 g-at of Cu per mole of protein; 29.3, 31.3 and 41.7%, respectively, of the soluble Cd, Zn and Cu in the midgut gland are associated with this protein (25.7, 6.3 and 34.4% of the total midgut gland Cd, Zn and Cu). Neither heavy metal-binding protein is bound to measurable amounts of lead.  相似文献

The crab Carcinus maenas (L.) was exposed to radioactively labelled cadmium dissolved in seawater at concentrations of 0.1, 1 and 10 ppm, the latter concentration being toxic to the crabs (50% mortality after 12.3 days). Net accumulation of cadmium from solution was proportional to the level and time period of cadmium exposure. Total absorbed cadmium levels reached 0.0043 and 0.0412 mg Cd g-1 dry weight after 40 days exposure to 0.1 and 1 ppm Cd, respectively, and 0.1115 mg Cd g-1 dry weight after 12.3 days average exposure to 10 ppm Cd. The highest tissue concentration was found in the midgut gland, reaching 0.786 mg Cd g-1 dry weight after 12.3 days average exposure to 10 ppm Cd. The midgut gland only contained about 10% of the total cadmium absorbed from solution, while the exoskeleton contained the bulk of obsorbed cadmium (59 to 80%) probably passively adsorbed onto the surface. When cadmium was absorbed by the crabs from a food source, the midgut gland contained 16.9% of the total absorbed cadmium whereas the exoskeleton now contained only 22.2%. Ten percent of the cadmium available in the food source (Artemia salina) was accumulated by the crabs. When placed in cadmium-free seawater, crabs that had accumulated cadmium from solution lost 69% of the absorbed cadmium in 10 days, mostly from the exoskeleton which lost 78% of its original absorbed cadmium concentration.  相似文献

The accumulations of Al, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Ni, Pb and Zn in the exoskeleton, gills, hepatopancreas and abdominal muscles of crayfish Astacus leptodactylus (Eschscholtz, 1823) were determined. The strongest correlation observed was between Cr and Ni in the gills (r?=?0.904); moderate to strong correlations between Al, Cr, Fe, Ni and Cu were also observed in gill tissue. Disregarding the gills, the strongest correlation was found between Cu and Zn in the hepatopancreas (r?=?0.808); the correlation between these two metals might have been a result of metallothionein activity. The accumulation of Pb was found to correlate with that of Cd in the exoskeleton, Cd and Zn in the gills, Zn and Cu in the hepatopancreas and Cu in the abdominal muscle. None of these correlations were present in lakewater and sediment samples, suggesting that the crayfish metabolism may be responsible for the co-accumulation of metal–metal pairs. As all correlations in non-gill tissues are observed between divalent metals, a shared transporter such as divalent metal transporter 1 might be involved in the accumulation of these metals.  相似文献

The effects of exposure to sediment-associated tri-n-butyltin chloride (TBTCl) were examined in the euryhaline European flounder, Platichthys flesus (L.). The effects were quantified by measuring the changes in sodium efflux; Na+/K+-ATPase activity; and the numbers, areas, and distribution of chloride cells in the gills of freshwater-adapted fish, following a rapid transfer to seawater. Following the transfer to seawater, the Na+/K+-ATPase activity and the sodium efflux were significantly increased in the control group but remained unchanged in the TBTCl-exposed group. The normal morphological changes to the gill epithelium associated with seawater adaptation, which involve chloride cell distribution, took place in the control group but were significantly inhibited or delayed in the TBTCl group. The results presented in this study lead to the conclusion that environmental concentrations of tri-n-butyltin chloride in sediments are capable of significantly disrupting both the physiological and the morphological components of iono-regulatory functions of an estuarine flatfish.  相似文献

The distribution and abundance of the littorinid gastropod Cenchritis (Tectarius) muricatus were determined on an exposed shore at Lee Stocking Island, Bahamas in July/August 1995 and June 1999. Activity patterns were observed on two occasions shortly before a hurricane passed near the island in 1995. C. muricatus extended from the low water mark to 3.6 m vertical height above it. Highest densities (20/m2) were found just above the high tide mark but the animal remained relatively abundant (8/m2) at the highest point. Small animals were only found at high shore levels. With the exception of animals very near to the water's edge C. muricatus was inactive by day and on dry nights. Many individuals of the high shore populations became active at night during periods of high humidity and rainfall, moving distances of up to 4 m overnight. At lower levels, extensive pairing and copulation was associated with these periods of rainfall. Abundance changed dramatically after the passage of the hurricane. At the level of maximum abundance numbers were reduced from 20/m2 to 2.8/m2. Long-term experimental studies of water loss rate and haemolymph concentration showed that both water loss rate and increase in haemolymph concentration are greatest in the early period of desiccation. The concentration of the blood after 20 weeks is 250% of the original and the water lost is of the order of 22.5%. After an initial increase there appears to be evidence of regulation of haemolymph concentration possibly by exchange with free water in the shell itself. The considerable reserve capacity in tolerance is no doubt in part due to the structure and functioning of the kidney. Adaptive features of the excretory system identified from ultrastructural examination include the replacement of podocyte-containing filtration chambers in the auricle by extracellular tubules permeating the walls of both auricle and ventricle, which suggests a reduction in the rate of primary urine formation. This is also indicated by a reduced surface area of the nephridial gland, which resorbs organic solutes from the urine. Excretory cells contain single large vacuoles in which arise large multi-layered concretions composed of phospholipids and calcium salts typical of prosobranchs in which excretory products may be stored for long periods.  相似文献

Dopamine, noradrenaline and serotonin were measured in the haemolymph and gills of Carcinus maenas before and after transferring them into diluted seawater. A remarkable variation of the above-mentioned compounds was observed as a function of time of osmotic stress. C. maenas were captured in the Venetian lagoon near Chioggia, Italy in 1986.  相似文献

The tissue and sub-cellular distribution of Fe, Cu, Zn and the naturally occurring radionuclide polonium-210 was determined in the gastropod mollusc Haliotis rubra collected from Western Port Bay, Australia, between March and July 1988. The highest concentrations of the metals, with the exception of Cu, were found in the digestive gland. Copper was more uniformly distributed, with tissues that are more vasculated having higher concentrations. Ultrastructural examination of the digestive gland, gill and kidney showed dense membrane-bound granules within the cytoplasm. Elemental analysis of the granules by electron probe x-ray microanalysis indicated that the granules in the digestive gland and gill contained high concentrations of iron, with small amounts of copper and zinc. In contrast, the metal-containing granules in the kidney were predominantly composed of iron, copper and phosphorus, with variable contributions of sodium potassium, and calcium. Homogenisation and fractionation of the digestive gland by differential centrifugation confirmed that approximately 80, 10, 90 and 50% of the total homogenate Fe, Cu, Zn and 210Po, respectively, sedimented at 1200xg. In the haemolymph, all the elements studied were associated with the soluble high molecular weight component of the serum, not with the amoebocytes. 210Po was present in the mucus-secreting hypobranchial glands at about half the concentration found in gill tissue.  相似文献

Heavy metal concentrations (Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn) were determined in various tissues (hepatopancreas, branchial hearts, salivary gland, gills, genital tract, mantle, arms and skin) of Octopus vulgaris collected from three different contaminated sites in front of Alexandria (Egypt) during 2000. All collected tissues displayed high enrichment factors when compared to ambient levels. Heavy metal concentrations in most tissues displayed significant differences among sites, sizes and sex. This study suggests that hepatopancreas, and to a lesser extent branchial hearts, are better indicators of chronic Cu, Fe, Zn and Cd contamination than edible tissues. The enrichment factor (EF) for heavy metals in the hepatopancreas and in edible tissues allowed discriminating our samples into three main groups; (1) EF?>?55 (Cu), (2) EF ranging from 15 to 7.5 (Fe, Cd and Zn) and (3) EF?相似文献

The spider crabHyas araneus (L.) was collected from the North Sea in winter 1986–1987 and reared in the laboratory from hatching of the Zoea I (ZI) through the first juvenile instar (CI). Within a given moult cycle, individuals of the same age were sampled in intervals of 2 (ZI, ZII, CI) or 3 d (megalopa) for analysis of dry weight (W), carbon (C), nitrogen (N), hydrogen (H), protein, DNA, and RNA. Lipid was calculated from C. Biomass, growth rate and nucleic acid contents showed high variability during each moult cycle and between instars. Instantaneous growth rates of C were high in postmoult and intermoult, and low in the premoult period of each moult cycle. A shift was observed from high rates of lipid accumulation in the postmoult and intermoult stages to proportionally increasing protein accumulation during late premoult (ZI), or throughout a major part of the remaining moult cycle (in all other instars). DNA was accumulated throughout the ZI and ZII instars, but decreased in late premoult megalopa. It increased again from late intermoult through intermediate premoult in juveniles. RNA increased continuously during ZI and ZII, and decreased in the megalopa, almost to levels that had been found immediately after hatching. In juveniles, variation in RNA followed closely those in DNA. Cell multiplication (expressed by DNA increase) dominated over increase in cell size (defined by the C/DNA ratio) during the zoeal instars and in postmoult through early intermoult in the megalopa and CI. When specific (C-related) RNA values and RNA/DNA ratios were compared with instantaneous growth rates in C and N, no general correspondence was detected. The only significant relationship between specific RNA values and instantaneous C or N growth rates was found in the megalopa. The same held for the relationship between the RNA/DNA ratio and growth. Here, in addition to the megalopa, a correspondence with C growth was also found in the CI instar. Our results suggest that variation in nucleic acids may provide useful insights into mechanisms of growth on the cellular level (cell multiplication vs cell enlargement). However, lack of general correlation with variation in growth rates ofH. araneus larvae shows that the use of nucleic acids as a measure of growth is probably based upon too simplistic assumptions; it may not yield reliable predictions, when growth is associated with developmental events.  相似文献

The spatial distribution and population structure of two dominant ice-associated copepods, Drescheriella glacialis and Paralabidocera antarctica, were studied during winter at nine locations in east Antarctic fast ice. These species accounted for at least 90% of the total metazoan abundance at each location. Abundances were high, reaching 175 individuals l-1 (190,000 m-2) for D. glacialis and 660 l-1 (901,000 m-2) for P. antarctica. These abundances were probably partly supported by the high biomass of ice-algae (Pearson correlation coefficient, r=0.75), as indicated by chlorophyll-a concentrations (1.7-10.1 µg l-1). The population structures of each species suggested very different life-history strategies. All developmental stages of D. glacialis were isolated from the ice cores, including females with egg sacs, supporting the hypothesis that this species reproduces in the sea ice during winter. This strategy might assist D. glacialis in leading a continually colonising existence, whereby it responds opportunistically to the availability of favourable habitat patches. The populations of P. antarctica were composed primarily of nauplii (>99%), consistent with past observations of a synchronised life cycle for this species. The strong coupling of the developmental cycle of P. antarctica to the growth and decay of sea ice suggests that local extinctions might occur in areas where ice break-out is unpredictable.  相似文献

This study aims to determine the extent of metal pollution in Lake Yeniça?a (Bolu, Turkey) by investigating the accumulation trends of five metals (Al, Cu, Fe, Ni and Zn) and a metalloid (As) in gills, exoskeleton, hepatopancreas and abdominal muscles of the freshwater crayfish Astacus leptodactylus. Principal component analysis (PCA), cluster analysis (CA), correlation analysis and analysis of variance (ANOVA) were utilised to determine the accumulation profiles of each element over four seasons. The greatest element accumulation was found to occur in the gills. All elements in exoskeletal tissue displayed positive correlations with each other, a similar trend was also observed in the hepatopancreas samples. Strong (r=0.868) and very strong (r=0.960) positive correlations were found between the accumulations of Al and Fe in gills and the exoskeleton, respectively. Correlations in tissue accumulation rates are discussed in the context of metabolic roles and impacts associated with the elements tested. Elemental compositions of Yeniça?a water and sediment samples were also investigated to determine whether the composition of the surrounding environment matches the metal accumulation trends of tissue samples. We demonstrate that, by the criteria set by the United States Environmental Protection Agency, Lake Yeniça?a is heavily polluted in terms of As and Ni.  相似文献

We examined trace metal ingestion and assimilation (Cd, Se, Zn) by the green mussel Perna viridis in a mixture of diatoms and sediment at concentrations below and above the pseudofeces production levels. Dual gamma radiotracers (109Cd, 65Zn) were used to investigate particle selection on marine diatoms and sediments. The diatom (Thalassiosira weissflogii) was radiolabeled with 109Cd, and the natural sediment was radiolabeled with 65Zn. By comparing the ratios of 109Cd:65Zn in the particle mixture, mussel tissues and pseudofeces within a short-term exposure period (35 min), the results demonstrated that the green mussels were able to selectively ingest the diatom particles at a high particle load. Efficiency of selection for nutritious particles (e.g. diatoms) increased with increasing ratio of sediments in the particle mixture. Pseudofeces contained a higher ratio of sediments relative to that in the feeding suspension. No major particle selection was observed at concentrations below the level for pseudofeces production. The assimilation of Cd, Se and Zn by the green mussels was quantified using a pulse-chase feeding technique. The assimilation of Se and Zn by the green mussels from ingested diatoms was reduced with the presence of sediment within the mussel gut, presumably due to the resorption of metals onto the sediment, leading to a quicker passage of metals through the digestive tract and a lower proportion of metals subjected to intensive digestion. In contrast, the presence of diatoms did not significantly affect metal assimilation from ingested sediment. A significant correlation between metal assimilation efficiency and metal gut passage time was also observed. Metal assimilation by the green mussels appeared to be little dependent on the particle concentration in seawater. Our study suggests that particle selection may potentially alter metal influx from ingested food sources, particularly at high particle concentrations. Selective feeding of nutritious particles, coupled with a high assimilation efficiency from these ingested particles, may increase metal influx into mussels from the dietary phase.  相似文献
