Adsorption of vanadate(V) from aqueous solution onto industrial solid ‘waste’ Fe(III)/Cr(III) hydroxide was investigated. HCl treated Fe(III)/Cr(III) hydroxide was found to be more efficient for the removal of vanadate(V) compared to untreated adsorbent. The adsorption follows second-order kinetics. Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms have been studied. The Langmuir adsorption capacity (Q 0) of the treated and untreated adsorbents was found to be 11.43 and 4.67 mg g−1, respectively. Thermodynamic parameters showed that the adsorption process was spontaneous and endothermic in the temperature range 32–60°C. Maximum adsorption was found at system pH 4.0. The adsorption mechanism was predominantly ion exchange. Effect of other anions such as phosphate, selenite, molybdate, nitrate, chloride, and sulfate on adsorption of vanadium has been examined.  相似文献

In this paper, steam-produced activated carbon (STAC) from maize tassel (MT) was evaluated for its ability to remove basic dye (methylene blue MB) from aqueous solution in a batch adsorption process. The equilibrium experiments were conducted in the range of 50–300 mg/L initial MB concentrations at 30°C, for effect of pH, adsorbent dosage and contact time. The experimental data were analysed by Langmuir, Freundlich and Temkin isotherm models of adsorption. Freundlich adsorption isotherm was found to have highest value of R2(R2=0.97) compared to other models of Langmuir and Temkin having (0.96 and 0.95 respectively). STAC has a high adsorptive capacity for MB dye (200 mg/g) and also showed favourable adsorption for the dye with the separation factor (RL<1) for the dye-activated carbon system. The kinetic data obtained were analysed using pseudo first-order kinetic equation and pseudo second-order kinetic equation. The experimental data fitted well into pseudo second-order kinetic equation, as demonstrated by the high value of R2.  相似文献

A polymer with characteristics similar to those of humic acids was obtained by synthesis reactions from oxidative polymerization in an alkaline medium using para-benzoquinone, hydroquinone and 4-aminobenzoic acid as precursors. Samples of natural and synthetic humic acid were used to examine the adsorption behavior of Cu2+ ions on these substrates. The mathematical models described by Langmuir and Freundlich equations were applied, yielding the maximum adsorption intensity values K′ (Langmuir), maximum adsorption capacity, b (Langmuir) and the adsorbent adsorption capacity, m (Freundlich). Based on solubility studies, pH 3 was selected for the development of the adsorption experiment. The Cu2+ ion presented a favorable adsorption, with RL (equilibrium parameter) responses in Langmuir isotherms falling within the desirable ranges.  相似文献

Sorption of metal ions by soil and clay minerals is a complex process involving different mechanisms, and controlled by different variables that can interact. The aim of this work was to study the retention mechanisms of Pb ions on different soil samples. Surface soils were sampled from Guilan and Hamadan provinces in north and northwest of Iran with temperate and semiarid climates. The adsorption isotherms of Pb on the soils have been studied at 15, 27 and 37°C. The adsorption data for different soils were fitted into Langmuir and Freundlich models. Temperate soil samples had higher clay content, cation exchange capacity, dichromate (oxidable) organic carbon, total Kjeldahl-nitrogen, biological activity, amorphous and crystalline Fe and Al, but semiarid soil samples had higher sand content, pH, equivalent calcium carbonate, available P and K. Lead adsorption data obtained from semiarid soils against those obtained from temperate soils were better fitted in both Langmuir and Freundlich models. Langmuir constants Q 0 for Pb adsorption in semiarid soils were considerably lower than those for Pb adsorption in temperate soils. However, the binding energy (K L) of Pb and Freundlich constant n were higher for data of semiarid soils. The effect of temperature on the Pb adsorption was positive especially in temperate soils; however, soil properties had higher effects on Pb adsorption.  相似文献

Naturally occurring diatomaceous earth was modified by alkaline pretreatment, and its effectiveness for Cd2+ removal from contaminated water was investigated. Batch experiments were carried out to determine Cd2+ adsorption capacity and the efficiency of the sorption process under different experimental conditions. Experimental data showed good fitting to Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms models. The Cd2+ maximum adsorption capacity was 0.058 mmol g−1 for raw diatomite and increased to 0.195 mmol g−1 for alkaline-pretreated diatomite with efficiency higher than 96% (diatomite dose 2.5 g L−1, pH 6). Adsorption of Cd2+ to alkaline-pretreated diatomite increased as the temperature increased. Thermodynamic parameters were calculated to evaluate the feasibility of the adsorption process at different temperatures. The adsorption process was spontaneous and endothermic. The interaction between Cd2+ ions and diatomite surface was weak enough to be considered as physical sorption, confirmed by the low value of activation energy.  相似文献

Chemically prepared activated carbon derived from banana stalk (BSAC) was used as an adsorbent to remove malachite green (MG) dye from aqueous solution. BSAC was characterised using thermogravimetric analyser, Brunauer Emmett Teller, Fourier transform infrared spectrometry, scanning electron microscopy, pHpzc, elemental analysis and Boehm titration. The effectiveness of BSAC in adsorbing MG dye was studied as a function of pH, contact time, temperature, initial dye concentration and repeated desorption–adsorption processes. pHpzc of BSAC was 4.5 and maximum dye adsorption occurred at pH 8.0. The rate of dye adsorption by BSAC was very fast initially, attaining equilibrium within 120 min following a pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Experimental data were analysed by Langmuir, Freundlich and Dubinin–Raduschevich isotherms. Equilibrium data fitted best into the Langmuir model, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 141.76 mg·g?1. Δ G 0 values were negative, indicating that the process of MG dye adsorption onto BSAC was spontaneous. The positive values of Δ H 0 and Δ S 0 suggests that the process of dye adsorption was endothermic. The regeneration efficiency of spent BSAC was studied using 0.5 M HCl, and was found to be in the range of 90.22–95.16% after four cycles. This adsorbent was found to be both effective and viable for the removal of MG dye from aqueous solution.  相似文献

Magnetic particles prepared via co-precipitation and impregnated onto wheat husk (MN-WH) were used for the removal of methyl blue (MB) from aqueous solution. Experiments were conducted in a batch mode for optimization regarding pH, contact time, adsorbent dose, initial dye concentrations, and temperature. Maximum adsorption (98%) was achieved at pH 5. The adsorption data were fitted into pseudo-first, pseudo-second, intraparticle diffusion, and Elovich equation revealing that adsorption followed pseudo-second-order kinetics. The four most common isotherm models, i.e. the Langmuir, Freundlich, Tempkin, and Dubinin–Radushkevich (D–R), were used to evaluate the data, with the best fit to a Langmuir isotherm (R2 = 0.996), followed by a Freundlich isotherm (R2 = 0.995), indicating monolayer adsorption of MB on the surface of MN-WH. Thermodynamic parameters calculated from the Van't Hoff equation revealed that the adsorption is exothermic (ΔHº = ?19.7 kJ mol?1).  相似文献

Removal of cadmium(II), lead(II), and chromium(VI) from aqueous solution using clay, a naturally occurring low-cost adsorbent, under various conditions, such as contact time, initial concentration, temperature, and pH has been investigated. The sorption of these metals follows both Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherms. The magnitude of Langmuir and Freundlich constants at 30°C for cadmium, lead, and chromium indicate good adsorption capacity. The kinetic rate constants (K ad) indicate that the adsorption follows first order. The thermodynamic parameters: free energy change (ΔG o), enthalpy change (ΔH o), and entropy change (ΔS o) show that adsorption is an endothermic process and that adsorption is favored at high temperature. The results reveal that clay is a good adsorbent for the removal of these metals from wastewater.

The adsorption of chromium(VI) onto ZnCl2 activated carbon developed from coir pith was investigated to assess the possible use of this adsorbent. The influence of contact time, adsorbent dose, Cr(VI) concentration, pH and temperature were investigated. The two theoretical adsorption isotherms, namely, Langmuir and Freundlich were used to describe the experimental results. The Langmuir adsorption capacity (Q 0) was found to be 120.5?mg Cr(VI) per g of the adsorbent. The adsorption followed the second-order kinetics and was found to be maximum at pH 2.0. The pH effect and the desorption studies showed that ion exchange mechanism might be involved in the adsorption process. The effects of foreign ions such as chloride, sulphate, phosphate, selenite, molybdate, nitrate and perchlorate on the removal of Cr(VI) have been investigated. The removal of Cr(VI) from synthetic ground water was also tested. The results show that ZnCl2 activated coir pith carbon is effective for the removal of Cr(VI) from water.  相似文献

The adsorption of copper, zinc, cobalt, lead and cadmium ions onto Colpomenia sinuosa was studied as a function of contact time, initial metal ion concentration and initial pH. In addition, desorption studies were performed. Characterisation of this adsorbent was also confirmed by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis. Batch adsorption experimental data were analysed using Langmuir, Freundlich and Dubinin–Raduschkevich (D–R) adsorption isotherms. The results indicated that the biosorption equilibrium was well described by both the Freudlich and D–R isotherms. Moreover, sorption kinetics was performed and it was observed that equilibrium was reached in<60 min, which could be described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model for all heavy metals. The sorption of heavy metals onto the biomass was largely dependent on the initial solution pH. The elution efficiency for heavy metal ions desorption from C. sinuosa was determined for 0.1 M HCl, 1.0 M HCl and 1.0 M HNO3. Desorption efficiency and also adsorption capacity were highest for Pb(II). The results indicate that C. sinuosa has great potential for the removal of heavy metals in an ecofriendly process.  相似文献

Rates of routine respiration (R R, μl O2 fish−1 h−1) and total ammonia nitrogen excretion (E R, μg NH4–N + NH3–N fish−1 h−1) were measured on larval and juvenile haddock (Melanogrammus aeglefinus) to ascertain how energy losses due to metabolism were influenced by temperature (T), dry body mass (M D, mg) and specific growth rate (SGR, % per day). R R and E R increased with M D according to y =  · M D b with b-values of 0.96, 0.98, 1.14, and 0.89, 0.78, 0.74, respectively, at 10, 7, and 4°C, respectively. Multiple regressions explained 98% of the variability in the combined effects of M D and T on R R and E R in larval haddock: R R = 0.97 · M D 0.98  · e0.092 · T ; E R = 0.06 · M D 0.79  · e0.092 · T . In young juvenile (24–30 mm standard length) haddock, R R tended to decline (P = 0.06) and E R significantly declined (P = 0.02) with increasing SGR. O:N ratios significantly increased with increasing SGR suggesting that N was spared in relatively fast-growing individuals. Our results for young larval and juvenile haddock suggest: (1) nearly isometric scaling of R R with increasing body size, (2) allometric scaling of E R with increasing body size, (3) Q 10 values of 2.5 for both R R and E R, (4) metabolic differences in substrate utilization between relatively fast- and slow-growing individuals, and (5) that rates of routine energy loss and growth were not positively related. The measurements in this study will provide robust parameter estimates for individual-based models that are currently being utilized to investigate how variability in climatic forcing influences the vital rates of early life stages of haddock. Our results also stress that inter-individual differences in rates of energy loss should not be overlooked as a factor influencing growth variability among individuals.  相似文献

Transport of engineered antibiotic resistance plasmids in porous media has been reported to potentially cause significant spreading of antibiotic resistance in the environment. In this work, transport of an indigenous resistance plasmid pK5 in porous media was investigated through packed column experiments. At identical ionic strengths in CaCl2 solutions, the breakthroughs of pK5 from soil columns were very close to those from quartz sand columns, indicating that transport of pK5 in quartz sand and soil was similar. A similarity in transport behavior was also found between pK5 and an engineered plasmid pBR322 that has approximately the same number of base pairs as pK5. The influence of surfactants, a major group of constituents in soil solutions, was examined using an engineered plasmid pcDNA3.1(+)/myc-His A. The impact of an anionic surfactant, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), was negligible at concentrations up to 200 mg·L–1. Cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB), a cationic surfactant, was found to significantly enhance plasmid adsorption at high concentrations. However, at environmentally relevant concentrations (<1 mg·L–1), the effect of this surfactant was also minimal. The negligible impact of surfactants and the similarity between the transport of engineered and indigenous plasmids indicate that under environmentally relevant conditions, indigenous plasmids in soil also have the potential to transport over long distances and lead to the spreading of antibiotic resistance.

This study focused on the biosorption of trivalent chromium onto mycelial bacterium (Streptomyces rimosus) biomass from effluent of tannery. The biomass was prepared by treatment with alkali. Fourier transforms-infra red analysis of the mycelial bacterial revealed the presence of carboxyl groups as possible binding sites. Experimental parameters affecting biosorption processes such as pH contact time were studied. Langmuir, Freundlich, and Temkin models were applied to describe the biosorption isotherms. The Langmuir model fitted the equilibrium data better than the Freundlich isotherm. The biosorption capacity of S. rimosus biomass for trivalent chromium was found to be 83 mg g?1 at pH 4.8 and 3 g L?1 biomass dosage, 300 min equilibrium time and 20°C. Kinetic evaluation of experimental data showed that the biosorption processes of trivalent chromium followed pseudo-second-order kinetics well.  相似文献

Gibbsite calcined at 400°C (GB400) was prepared, and its ability to adsorb rhodium(III) was investigated. Optimal pH, effect of contact time, temperature, adsorption isotherms, and recovery percentage were evaluated. The optimal pH was 6.3. The adsorption equilibrium was achieved within 24 h. The adsorption rate was found to be of pseudo-first order. The experimental data were fitted to both the Freundlich (r = 0.90–0.93) and Langmuir (r = 0.94–0.96) equations. The amount of rhodium(III) adsorbed decreased with increasing temperature. Rhodium(III) being adsorbed from phosphate or sulfate plating solution was recovered using hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide solutions at 1, 10, and 100 mmol L?1.  相似文献

Magnetic ion-imprinted polymers (IIPs) were prepared by precipitate polymerization and leached with HCl to remove uranium. Their ability to remove hexavalent uranium from wastewater effluents was studied. Batch adsorption studies to determine the optimum conditions of U(VI) removal were conducted at different levels of sample pH, sorbent amount, agitation time, and initial uranium concentration. It was observed that, under optimum conditions (i.e. pH 4, adsorbent amount of 50 mg, 45 min agitation time, and initial U(VI) concentration of 2 mg L?1), the maximum removal of U(VI) cations was >98% and 80% for the magnetic IIP and the corresponding magnetic non-imprinted polymers (NIP), respectively. Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms were used to describe the adsorption of U(VI) onto magnetic IIP and NIP. The adsorption capacity of U(VI) was determined to be 1.06 and 0.85 mg g?1 for the two isotherms, respectively. The order of selectivity was found to be U(VI) > Fe(III) > Pb(II). For six cycles of regeneration and reuse, the magnetic polymers maintained their stabilities with only a 4% loss in the extraction efficiency. The average extraction efficiencies of the magnetic polymers for the spiked acid mine drainage and sewage wastewater effluents were 71% and 58% for the magnetic IIP and NIP, respectively. From powder X-ray diffraction analysis, application of the Scherrer equation yielded magnetic nanoparticles of an average mean diameter of 11.9 nm. Thermo-gravimetric analysis revealed that the HCl-leached magnetic polymers had a magnetite residual weight of 5%.  相似文献

The singlet molecular oxygen‐mediated photooxidation of simple nitrophenols was studied in micellar (CTAB) alkaline solutions.

A different behaviour for the values of the overall rate constant (Kt ) and the reactive rate constant (Kt ) in the interaction nitrophenol‐singlet molecular oxygen was observed as a function of surfactant concentration. The former decreases as [CTAB] increases, from values of 1–3 × 109 M–1 s–1 in the absence of surfactant to values at least one order of magnitude lower at [CTAB] ~0.1 M. Parallel, kt remains practically unaffected, in values of the order of 106 — 107 M–l s–1, depending on the particular nitrophenol, within the same [CTAB] range. The quantum yield of nitrophenols photooxidation reaches a maximum at [CTAB] ~0.1 M.

The results are discussed in terms of a combination of causes, the polarity of the nitrophenolic microenvironment being the driving effect. The implication of the results on environmental decontamination are also analyzed.  相似文献

Removal of selenite [Se (IV)] from aqueous solution on to industrial solid ‘waste’ Fe(III)/Cr(III) hydroxide as adsorbent was investigated in the present article. Maximum adsorption was found to be at pH 4.0. Pretreated Fe(III)/Cr(III) hydroxide was found to be more efficient for the removal of selenite compared to untreated adsorbent. Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms have been studied. The Langmuir adsorption capacity (Q 0) of the pretreated and untreated adsorbents was found to be 15.63 and 6.04?mg?g?1, respectively. The adsorption process fit into the second-order kinetics. Thermodynamic parameters show that the adsorption process is spontaneous and endothermic in the temperature range 32 to 60°C. Coexisting anions vanadate and phosphate significantly affect the adsorption of selenite for both the pretreated and untreated adsorbents. Molybdate, thiocyanate, sulphate, nitrate and chloride do not significantly affect the removal of selenite for pretreated adsorbent.  相似文献

A simple and rapid ligand-less in situ surfactant-based solid phase extraction method for preconcentration of silver from water samples is developed. In this method, a cationic surfactant containing a proper alkyl group (n-dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide) is dissolved in the aqueous sample and then a proper ion-pairing agent (ClO4?) is added. Due to the interaction between surfactant and ion-pairing agent, solid particles are formed and used for adsorption of silver carbonate. After centrifugation, the sediment is dissolved in 2.0 mL 1 M HNO3 in ethanol and then aspirated directly into the flame atomic absorption spectrometer. Variables affecting the extraction efficiencies such as pH, concentrations of surfactant and CO32?, ion pair concentration, and extraction time, are optimized. Under such conditions, the calibration curve is linear from 3 to 700 μg L?1. Detection limit is 1.1 μg L?1 with an enrichment factor of 37. The relative standard deviation for eight replicate measurements of 100 μg L?1 is 2.1%. The method has been applied for the determination of silver in water samples.  相似文献

Batch equilibrium and soil thin layer chromatography (TLC) techniques were used to investigate the influence of different volume fractions of organic cosolvents (acetone and methanol) on the adsorption and movement of carbaryl in four different types of Indian soils. L-shaped isotherms were obtained for both the cosolvent–water mixtures at all f s values and were in close agreement with the Freundlich equation. Higher adsorption was observed on F.R.I. soil (FSL) followed by Alampur soil (ASL), Kalai soil (KL), and Bhoran soil (BSL) at all f s values for both the cosolvent systems as was anticipated from the K and K D values. The K and K D values also confirmed that carbaryl adsorption was higher in methanol–water mixture than acetone–water mixture and decreased with increasing f s values. The frontal R f values obtained from soil TLC studies were inversely proportional to the K and K D values for both the cosolvent systems. The higher K and K D values and lower R f values in methanol–water mixtures relative to acetone–water mixtures for all the soils indicated that acetone had a greater potential for ground water contamination compared to methanol. The adsorption data were used to evaluate the cosolvent theory for describing adsorption of carbaryl in acetone–water and methanol–water mixtures. The aqueous phase partition coefficients, K DW (mol g?1), normalized with respect to f oc for carbaryl was evaluated by extrapolating f s → 0.  相似文献
