Insects with two or more generations per year will generally experience different selection regimes depending on the season,
and accordingly show seasonal polyphenisms. In butterflies, seasonal polyphenism has been shown with respect to morphology,
life history characteristics and behaviour. In temperate bivoltine species, the directly developing generation is more time-constrained
than the diapause generation, and this may affect various life history traits such as mating propensity (time from eclosion
to mating). Here, we test whether mating propensity differs between generations in Pieris napi, along with several physiological parameters, i.e. male sex pheromone synthesis, and female ovigeny index and fecundity.
As predicted, individuals of the directly developing generation—who have shorter time for pupal development—are more immature
at eclosion; males take longer to synthesise the male sex pheromone after eclosion and take longer to mate than diapause generation
males. Females show the same physiological pattern; the directly developing females lay fewer eggs than diapausing females
during the first days of their life. Nevertheless, the directly developing females mate faster after eclosion than diapausing
females, indicating substantial adult time stress in this generation and possibly an adaptive value of shortening the pre-reproductive
period. Our study highlights how time stress can be predictably different between generations, affecting both life history
and behaviour. By analysing several life history traits simultaneously, we adopt a multi-trait approach to examining how adaptations
and developmental constraints likely interplay to shape these seasonal polyphenisms. 相似文献

Brood desertion is a life history strategy that allows parents to minimize costs related to parental care and increase their future fecundity. The harvestman Neosadocus maximus is an interesting model organism to study costs and benefits of temporary brood desertion because females abandon their clutches periodically and keep adding eggs to their clutches for some weeks. In this study, we tested if temporary brood desertion (a) imposes a cost to caring females by increasing the risk of egg predation and (b) offers a benefit to caring females by increasing fecundity as a result of increased foraging opportunities. With intensive field observations followed by a model selection approach, we showed that the proportion of consumed eggs was very low during the day and it was not influenced by the frequency of brood desertion. The proportion of consumed eggs was higher at night and it was negatively related to the frequency of brood desertion. However, frequent brood desertion did not result in higher fecundity, measured both as the number of eggs added to the current clutch and the probability of laying a second clutch over the course of the reproductive season. Considering that harvestmen are sensitive to dehydration, brood desertion during the day may attenuate the physiological stress of remaining exposed on the vegetation. Moreover, since brood desertion is higher during the day, when egg predation pressure is lower, caring females could be adjusting their maternal effort to the temporal variation in predation risk, which is regarded as the main cost of brood desertion in ectotherms. 相似文献

Non-random sex allocation may occur whenever the expected reproductive value of sons and daughters differs, as is the case when the sexes differ in susceptibility to environmental conditions or maternal effects (e.g. egg size and hatch order). Under such circumstances, covariation between egg and clutch characteristics and egg sex may be expected, and this covariation should vary with maternal state or ecological conditions. In this 2-year study (2007–2008), we examined sex allocation in relation to egg and clutch traits in the yellow-legged gull Larus michahellis, a species where male chicks are larger and more susceptible to harsh rearing conditions than female ones. In 2008, eggs were more likely male early in the season in two- but not three-egg clutches, and large eggs were more likely males late in the season. No egg/clutch traits predicted egg sex in 2007. Within-clutch egg mass asymmetry (the difference in egg mass between the first- and last-laid eggs) predicted sex in both years. In 2007, clutches with smaller egg mass variation were more likely to contain males, while in 2008 this relationship held for the last-laid egg and was reversed for the preceding egg(s). Laying order and sex of the previous egg did not predict egg sex, providing no evidence of sex-specific oocyte clustering. Thus, the relationships between egg sex and egg/clutch traits differed among years, suggesting a phenotypically plastic response of females to extrinsic conditions, and involved within-clutch egg mass asymmetry, a trait likely reflecting variation in maternal quality and/or reproductive tactics, which has been largely neglected in previous studies of sex allocation. 相似文献

Female birds can influence offspring fitness by varying the relative quantities of egg components they deposit within and
between clutches. Antimicrobial proteins (lysozyme, ovotransferrin, and avidin) are significant components of the avian albumen
and likely aid in defense of embryos from microbial infection. Within clutches, females may enhance antimicrobial defense
of early-laid eggs to protect them from the high risk of infection incurred before the onset of incubation. Among entire clutches,
females may invest more resources in young sired by more attractive males because they have higher reproductive value. We
tested these hypotheses by quantifying antimicrobial protein distribution within and among clutches in blue tit eggs. Contrary
to our hypothesis, clutches showed no differential deposition of lysozyme or avidin within clutches, but eggs laid in the
middle of the sequence had higher concentrations of ovotransferrin than eggs in the beginning and end. Consistent with our
second hypothesis, we found that females produced eggs with higher concentrations of lysozyme (although not ovotransferrin
or avidin) when mated to more attractive (more UV-reflective) males. Furthermore, females mated to polygynous males deposited
less lysozyme than those mated to monogamous males. These data suggest that allocation of lysozyme at the clutch level may

Sperm competition is a well-recognised agent in the evolution of sperm and ejaculate structure, as well as variation in female quality. Models of the evolution of ejaculate expenditure predict that male body condition, female fecundity and the risk and intensity of sperm competition may be the ultimate factors shaping optimal ejaculate size. We investigated sperm allocation in Austropotamobius italicus, a freshwater crayfish exhibiting a coercive mating system and external fertilisation, in relation to male and female traits and copulation behaviour under laboratory conditions. We found that mating males were sensitive to female size and produced larger ejaculates when mating with larger females, which were more fecund in terms of number of eggs produced. We found no evidence for female egg production being sperm-limited, as the number of eggs was not dependent on male sperm expenditure. Copulation duration and number of ejaculations reliably predicted the amount of sperm transferred, and both these behavioural measures positively covaried with female body size. These results indicate that male freshwater crayfish can modulate their sperm expenditure in accordance with cues that indicate female fecundity. In addition, a novel finding that emerged from this study is the decrease in sperm expenditure with male body size, which may either suggest that large, old male crayfish are better able than small males to economise sperm at a given mating to perform multiple matings during a reproductive season, or that they experience senescence of their reproductive performance. 相似文献

In some fish species with paternal care, females prefer to spawn with males whose nests already contain eggs. Several hypotheses
have been put forward to explain this behaviour, such as reduced risk of predation or cannibalism (the dilution effect), increased
parental investment, and mate copying. This experimental study focuses on female mate choice in the sand goby, Pomatoschistus minutus. Females were found to choose males with eggs in their nests. In addition, hatching success increased with clutch size, mainly
because males with larger clutches showed less filial cannibalism. Increased egg survival in large clutches may thus be explained
by a combination of the dilution effect and higher parental investment. In another experiment, females did not seem to copy
the observed mate choice of other females. In conclusion, female preference for males with eggs in their nests is adaptive,
and can be explained by direct benefits, as more surviving offspring are produced.

Fisher’s sex ratio theory predicts that on average parents should allocate resources equally to the production of males and females. However, when the cost/benefit ratio for producing males versus females differs, the theory predicts that parents may bias production, typically through underproduction of the sex with greater variation in fitness. We tested theoretical predictions in the red-necked phalarope, a polyandrous shorebird with sex-role reversal. Since females are larger and therefore potentially more expensive to produce and may have greater variation in reproductive success, we predicted from Fisher’s hypothesis a male bias in population embryonic sex ratio, and from sex allocation theory, female biases in the clutches of females allocating more resources to reproduction. We measured eggs and chicks and sexed 535 offspring from 163 clutches laid over 6 years at two sites in Alaska. The embryonic sex ratio of 51.1 M:48.9 F did not vary from parity. Clutch sex ratio (% male) was positively correlated with clutch mean egg size, opposite to our prediction. Within clutches, however, egg size did not differ by sex. Male phalarope fitness may be more variable than previously thought, and/or differential investment in eggs may affect the within-sex fitness of males more than females. Eggs producing males were less dense than those producing females, possibly indicating they contained more yolk relative to albumen. Albumen contributes to chick structural size, while yolk supports survivorship after hatch. Sex-specific chick growth strategies may affect egg size and allocation patterns by female phalaropes and other birds. 相似文献

Female birds might be able to manipulate the parental effort of their male partner through elevated transfer of hormones to
the eggs, since these hormones affect many chick traits that males might use as cues for adjusting the level of their investment.
We experimentally studied whether female pied flycatchers Ficedula hypoleuca could manipulate male investment via yolk androgens. There is much more variation in yolk androgen levels between females
than within clutches, and in order to change the androgen levels of the eggs, we swapped whole clutches between nests. To
estimate the androgen levels of the clutch, we measured the androgen content of a single egg per clutch. Females did not succeed
in manipulating male effort using yolk androgens, since there was no relationship between the division of parental care within
a pair and either original or foster egg androgen levels. One of these relationships should have occurred if females were
manipulating males. The proportion of feeding visits by the male was higher when the male was old (55%) than when he was young
(45%) and females laid eggs with higher androgen levels when mated with a young male. Young males did not exhibit any responses
to yolk androgen levels either, which indicates that females cannot exploit their effort more than that of old males. We suggest
that females may allocate yolk androgens to adjust the growth trajectories of the chicks to poor growing conditions when mated
with young males that are poor providers or occupying a poor territory. 相似文献

There is genetic variation in the female mating rate in the green-veined white butterfly (Pieris napi), and females benefit from male ejaculates that contain both sperm and accessory gland substances. Although polyandry corresponds to higher lifetime fecundity than monandry, some females abstain from remating irrespective of the number of available mates. Explaining genetic variation in mating rates requires that monandrous females perform better than polyandrous ones under some conditions. We experimentally explored the reproductive performance of females either with a low or high intrinsic mating rate by allowing them to mate, feed, and lay eggs freely in a laboratory. Individual females followed different life histories: during the early days of reproduction, females with a low mating rate produced more eggs than females with a high mating rate. Hence, refraining from the benefits of multiple mating may be beneficial, if the time for reproduction is limited, or other female traits associated with polyandry are traded off against longevity. Given the day length of 10 h, a model shows that even if polyandrous females enjoy higher lifetime reproductive success, changeable and unpredictable weather will favor monandry if each period of suitable weather lasts, on average, less than 5 days. Thus, a combination of life history cost and unpredictability of fitness may explain the maintenance of monandry in the wild. Our results are also consistent with the observation that frequency of monandry increases with latitude. 相似文献

Abstract: We studied the effect of habitat fragmentation on female reproductive investment in a widespread lacertid lizard ( Psammodromus algirus ) in a mixed-forest archipelago of deciduous and evergreen oak woods in northern Spain. We captured gravid females in fragments (≤10 ha) and forests (≥ 200 ha) and brought them to the laboratory, where they laid their eggs. We incubated the eggs and released the first cohort of juveniles into the wild to monitor their survival. Females from fragments produced a smaller clutch mass and laid fewer eggs (relative to mean egg mass) than females of similar body size from forests. Lizards did not trade larger clutches for larger offspring, however, because females from fragments did not lay larger eggs (relative to their number) than females from forests. Among the first cohort of juveniles, larger egg mass and body size increased the probability of recapture the next year. Thus, fragmentation decreased the relative fecundity of lizards without increasing the quality of their offspring. Reduced energy availability, increased predation risk, and demographic stochasticity could decrease the fitness of lizards in fragmented habitats, which could contribute to the regional scarcity of this species in agricultural areas sprinkled with small patches of otherwise suitable forest. Our results show that predictable reduction of reproductive output with decreasing size of habitat patches can be added to the already known processes that cause inverse density dependence at low population numbers. 相似文献

Birds may influence the fitness of their offspring by transmission of different amounts of carotenoids to their eggs. Carotenoids
play crucial roles in antioxidant protection and immune defence mechanisms, but they may be available to females in limiting
amounts. Therefore, their allocation to the eggs may be influenced by the female’s condition, age and environmental circumstances.
Furthermore, the quality of the male parent, which affects the reproductive value of the offspring, may also influence this
investment. In this correlational study, we investigated proximate and ultimate factors that may lead to variation in yolk
lutein, zeaxanthin and β-carotene concentrations among and within clutches of a wild passerine, the collared flycatcher (Ficedula albicollis). We found that carotenoid concentration was positively associated with caterpillar supply at the time of egg formation,
which suggests a proximate constraint of carotenoid availability on yolk composition. Neither female condition, body size,
age, nor male plumage ornamentation, age and body size correlated with carotenoid deposition. Yolk β-carotene concentration
was found to be positively linked to yolk testosterone concentration. We suggest that females allocated more β-carotene to
their eggs to mitigate the potentially detrimental effects of elevated steroid concentration. We found that concentration
of β-carotene increased with laying order. The possible function of this pattern may be to enhance the resistance to oxidative
stress and pathogens of the disadvantaged last-hatching nestling, suggesting that collared flycatchers pursue a compensatory,

Environmental and/or genetic among-site variation in plant quality may influence growth and fecundity of specialized herbivores inhabiting a particular site. Such variation is important as it generates spatial variation in selection for traits related to plant–herbivore interaction. Littoral macroalgae are known to respond plastically to environmental variation by modifying their chemistry or morphology. We studied geographic variation in phlorotannin, nitrogen, protein, and sugar (fucose, mannitol, and melibiose) concentrations of the brown alga Fucus vesiculosus at 12 sites separated by 0.5 to 40 km in the naturally fragmented Archipelago Sea in the northern Baltic Sea. By this regional variation in algal chemistry we attempted to explain among-population variation in size and fecundity of the crustacean herbivore
Idotea baltica. We observed high spatial variation in all the measured chemical characteristics of F. vesiculosus, as well as in female size and the number of eggs produced by the herbivores. Spatial variation in nitrogen or protein contents of the alga did not explain the variation of herbivore traits. However, egg size positively covaried with spatial variation in the concentration of mannitol, the major storage carbohydrate of the alga. Such a positive relationship may arise if I. baltica can utilize the nutritive value of a mannitol-rich diet thereby being better able to provision the developing eggs with energy-rich metabolites. Unexpectedly, the concentration of phlorotannins, secondary metabolites having a putative role in defense against herbivory, positively covaried with the size of the herbivore. Among-population variation in host plant chemistry and covariation of that with herbivore growth and reproduction imply that herbivores respond to the local quality of their host plants, and that geographical structuring of populations has to be taken into account in studies of plant–herbivore interactions.Communicated by M. In Lepidoptera polyandry is common and females may increase their lifetime reproductive output through repeated matings if they acquire essential resources from male ejaculates. However, the paternity of males mating with previously-mated females is far from assured unless sperm precedence is absolute. In this study on the polyandrous armyworm, Pseudaletia unipuncta, we used two strains of male (the black-eyed wild type and a red-eyed homozygous, recessive mutant), mated with red-eyed females, to determine (i) whether male investment has any impact on female reproductive output, and (ii) if females do benefit from multiple matings, to what extent males fertilize the eggs to which they contributed. Multiple mating resulted in a significant increase in both the fecundity and longevity of females. However, the degree of sperm precedence (those eggs fertilized by the second male) varied from 0–100%, but was not affected by either male size or age, or by the duration of copulation. In cases where sperm precedence was <50% (x = 12%) females produced significantly more eggs (1384 versus 940) prior to the second mating than females where sperm precedence was >50% (x = 89%), indicating that the quality of the first mating influenced the fertilization success of the female's second mate. 相似文献

Male beaugregory damselfish (Stegastes leucostictus) spent more time courting larger females in both two-choice and single presentations. Female size was significantly correlated
with gonad weight. We also verified that female fecundity was extremely variable within a natural population. We found that
male reproductive success was highly correlated with both clutch size and clutch number. However, clutch size was not significantly
correlated with clutch number, indicating that males that received larger clutches did not receive more egg clutches. Furthermore,
there was no difference between the number of offspring produced by males that mated with the largest females and by males
that mated with the most females. Thus, although males preferred larger females, males produced similar numbers of offspring
by mating with large females or mating with many females.

Filial cannibalism in a nest-guarding fish: females prefer to spawn in nests with few eggs over many
In fish, fecundity correlates with female body size and egg-tending males often eat small broods. Therefore, small females may prefer to spawn in nests that already contain many eggs, to ensure the brood is as large as possible. In contrast, large females may prefer nests with few eggs, if high egg number or density has a negative effect on egg survival, or if there are drawbacks of spawning last in a nest. To test the hypothesis that female body size affects nest (and male mate) choice, using the sand goby (Pomatoschistus minutus), we allowed small and large females to choose between two males that were matched in size — one guarding a small clutch and the other a large clutch, respectively. We recorded where females spawned (measure of female preference), the combined brood size, male courtship, egg care and nest building. We also quantified the effect of brood size and egg density on egg survival in a separate data set. Although the combined broods did not exceed the small brood sizes that are at risk of being eaten, both small and large females preferred to spawn in nests with smaller clutch sizes. This preference could not be explained by more courtship or male parental effort, nor by reduced survival of larger or denser broods. Instead, our result might be explained by females avoiding the danger of cannibalism of young eggs by males or the risk of reduced egg health associated with being near the nest periphery. 相似文献

Sclerocrangon boreas is uncommon among marine coastal carideans in having a non-dispersing, abbreviated (2-stage) larval phase. We investigated
the implications of this strategy in terms of fecundity, offspring provisioning and brood care in S. boreas from the St. Lawrence Gulf and Estuary in 2009–2010. Fecundity scaled positively to female body size but was low due to the
production of large, lipid-rich eggs. Offspring size at all stages of development was positively related to female size. Larval
traits and lipid dynamics indicate obligatory lecithotrophic development from hatching to juvenile. The larva becomes a juvenile
on the mother and remains associated with her for sometime after. The co-occurrence of early egg stages among many juveniles
in some clutches raises the possibility that maternal care of juveniles includes the provisioning of trophic eggs or eggs

Transfer of maternal hormones to the eggs is a major source of offspring phenotypic variation. The developmental and organizational
effects of egg hormones can extend into adulthood and affect behavioral and morphological traits involved in sexual and reproductive
behavior, with important consequences for offspring fitness. In this study, we injected testosterone (T) in egg albumen of
captive ring-necked pheasant (Phasianus colchicus) eggs. We then assessed the consequences for chick growth, cell-mediated immunity, and multiple male secondary sexual traits
at maturity by comparison with a control group. We also compared the covariation between traits in the two experimental groups.
We found that control males had redder wattles than males from T-injected eggs, suggesting that attractiveness and reproductive
success of the offspring might vary depending on maternal transfer of T to the eggs. T treatment also modified the covariation
between cell-mediated immunity and wattle coloration and between the area of the wattle and the expression of another secondary
sexual trait, the ear tufts. These effects are likely to translate into fitness differences among the offspring if mate acquisition
depends on the simultaneous expression of several traits that are differentially affected by the same maternal contribution.
Maternal effects mediated by egg hormones might affect the fitness of the offspring not only by directional modification of
phenotypic traits, but also by facilitating or inhibiting their covariation. This suggests the possibility that female choice
based on the relative expression of multiple secondary sexual traits exerts a pressure on how maternal transfer of androgens

Performance in one stage of a complex life cycle may affect performance in the subsequent stage. Animals that start a new stage at a smaller size than conspecifics may either always remain smaller or they may be able to "catch up" through plasticity, usually elevated growth rates. We study how size at and date of metamorphosis affected subsequent performance in the terrestrial juvenile stage and lifetime fitness of spadefoot toads (Pelobates fuscus). We analyzed capture-recapture data of > 3000 individuals sampled during nine years with mark-recapture models to estimate first-year juvenile survival probabilities and age-specific first-time breeding probabilities of toads, followed by model selection to assess whether these probabilities were correlated with size at and date of metamorphosis. Males attained maturity after two years, whereas females reached maturity 2-4 years after metamorphosis. Age at maturity was weakly correlated with metamorphic traits. In both sexes, first-year juvenile survival depended positively on date of metamorphosis and, in males, also negatively on size at metamorphosis. In males, toads that metamorphosed early at a small size had the highest probability to reach maturity. However, because very few toadlets metamorphosed early, the vast majority of male metamorphs had a very similar probability to reach maturity. A matrix projection model constructed for females showed that different juvenile life history pathways resulted in similar lifetime fitness. We found that the effects of date of and size at metamorphosis on different juvenile traits cancelled each other out such that toads that were small or large at metamorphosis had equal performance. Because the costs and benefits of juvenile life history pathways may also depend on population fluctuations, ample phenotypic variation in life history traits may be maintained. 相似文献

The effects of intraspecific density on life history traits and population dynamics of the nereid polychaete Neanthes arenaceodentata Moore were assessed in a laboratory experiment. Survival, growth, and fecundity were measured for one generation of worms at densities of 40, 80 and 160 worms per 840 cm2 (1x, 2x, and 4x treatments, respectively). Density did not affect size (prior to pairing), percentage of worms paired, time to pairing, or size of mature paired males. Density did have a significant negative effect on survival, size of mature paired females, time to spawning, percentage of females that reproduced, and number of eggs per reproducing female. As density increased, mean survival was 90.0, 80.8 and 74.0%; mean size of mature females was 52.2, 49.2 and 48.1 segments; mean time to spawning was 100.6, 102.4 and 109.4 d; and mean fecundity was 881, 622, and 598 eggs per female, for 1x, 2x and 4x treatments, respectively. Increased density reduced the potential population growth rate, ; for a given rate of larval survivorship, was lower in the 2x and 4x treatments than the 1x treatment. Analysis of sensitivity of to changes in survivorship indicated that population growth rate at the highest density was sensitive to both changes in larval survivorship and the probability of producing a successful brood, although at low densities, was sensitive only to changes in larval survivorship. We attribute these density effects to aggressive bahavioral interactions between the worms, primarily the adults. In a sex role reversed pipefish, Syngnathus typhle, we found that basic life history allocations were directly influenced by sexual selection. We investigated time allocation to foraging and mating, respectively, in a choice experiment, giving males and females, of small or large body size, a choice between food and a potential partner. We found that males were more interested in foraging than mating, i.e., were more frequently observed in front of the food than in front of the partner, whereas females were more interested in the potential partner. This reflects sexual selection operating differently on the two sexes, as males and females are relatively similar in other life history traits, such as growth, mortality, age of maturity, dispersal, and parental expenditure. Moreover, large individuals allocated more time to mating activities, small to feeding. Individuals more interested in mating compared to food were subsequently more critical when given a choice between a large (high-quality) and a small (low-quality) partner, whereas individuals more interested in food were not selective. These findings are consistent with our predictions: sex-role reversed males can be relatively sure of achieving one or more matings, and should allocate more time to feeding and, hence, to parental investment, growth and/or future reproduction. Females, on the other hand, have more uncertain mating prospects and should allocate time to imminent reproductive activities, thereby foregoing other life history traits such as growth and future egg production.
