The venom of krait (Bungarus sindanus), an Elapidae snake, contains high level of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity. The effect of arachidonic acid on krait (Bungarus sindanus) venom AChE (acetylcholine hydrolase, EC 3.1.1.7) was studied using kinetic methods. This study evaluated for the first time whether arachidonic acid acts as potential AChE inhibitor of krait venom. Kinetic studies, using Line-Weaver Burk and Dixon plots, indicated that the inhibition produced by arachidonic acid was non-competitive, i.e., both km and V max fell with increase in the concentration of arachidonic acid. The concentration of arachidonic acid required to inhibit 50% of enzymatic activity was found to be 1.9?µM while the inhibitory constant (Ki ) was 1.4?µM. The present results suggest that essential fatty acid (arachidonic acid) may also be used as an inhibitor of snake venom AChE.  相似文献

The mosquito larvicidal activities of different solvent extracts (chloroform, ethyl acetate, and methanol) from the leaves of Coccinia indica were studied. Among the extracts tested, the methanol extract showed the highest larvicidal activity against early fourth instar larvae of Culex quinquefasciatus (LC50?=?142?mg?L?1), Aedes aegypti (LC50?=?158?mg?L?1) and Anopheles stephensi (LC50?=?161?mg?L?1) after 24?h of exposure period. The lowest larval mortality was observed with the ethyl acetate extract with the LC50 values of 927, 872, and 730?mg?L?1 against Cx. quinquefasciatus, Ae. aegypti, and An. stephensi, respectively. The chloroform extract showed the moderate larvicidal activity against the mosquito species tested with the LC50 values from 446 to 546?mg?L?1. A new triterpene was isolated from the methanol extract using bio-assay guided separation and identified as an oleanolic acid derivative by NMR, IR and mass spectral studies. The compound showed prominent larvicidal activity against Cx. quinquefasciatus, Ae. aegypti and An. stephensi with the LC50 values of 5.6, 5.0, and 4.8?mg?L?1, respectively. The results of the present investigation offer an opportunity for developing alternatives to rather expensive and environmentally hazardous organic insecticides.  相似文献

During early development in fish, phospholipase A2 (EC 3.1.1.4) regulates membrane lipid modifications, which relates to changes in environmental conditions and provision of fatty acids required for metabolic energy substrates and prostaglandin biosynthesis. A method to analyze phospholipase A2 in rat tissues has been modified to measure its activity in embryonic Atlantic halibut (Hippoglossus hippoglossus L.). Egg and embryo samples were collected during the 1994 spawning season. Enzyme activity was undetectable at fertilization but in 10-d embryos was 230 pmol mg−1 h−1 (at 20 °C) and increased by ∼120% at hatch (17-d). Significant alterations in the fatty acid composition of important phospholipids, phosphatidylcholine (PC) and phosphatidylethanolamine (PE), were also observed. The content of some critical polyunsaturated fatty acids, and the ratio of unsaturated/saturated fatty acids, declined significantly over development. Acyl-chain restructuring mediated through the activity of phospholipase A2, coupled with other observed lipid changes (significant increases in the PC/PE ratio and cholesterol content), would produce a decreased fluidity of membranes during embryonic development, coinciding with the predicted upward movement of larvae in the water column. Arachidonic acid (20:4n-6) removed from PE could serve as a precursor for biosynthesis of 2-series prostaglandins, and eicosapentaenoic acid (20:5n-3) from PC is a likely source for other prostaglandin types. Despite removal of polyunsaturated fatty acids, there was an overall increase in lipid and fatty acid concentration, which can be attributed to amino acid catabolism during early developmental stages. Biosynthesis of lipids by Thysanoessa inermis collected from Balsfjorden, northern Norway, in May 1980, was examined in vitro. The highest concentration of lipid within the krill was in the hepatopancreas, and this organ was the most active in esterifying free fatty acids into wax esters. The hepatopancreas (i.e., thoracic contents) incorporated (14C) glucose, (14C) alanine and 3H2O into wax esters, with the fatty alcohol moieties being labelled more than the fatty acids. (14C) fatty acid was incorporated preferentially into the fatty acid moieties of wax esters, this incorporation being markedly stimulated by free fatty alcohol. It is concluded that the fatty alcohols of wax esters are preferentially biosynthesized de novo from dietary protein and carbohydrates, whereas the fatty acids derive preferentially from dietary lipid. On the basis of 3H incorporated from 3H2O, the hepatopancreas in a 50 mg II-group (2 yr old) individual of T. inermis is capable of biosynthesizing de novo, approximately 0.1 mg of lipid (as fatty acids) per day at 5°C.  相似文献

Egg production and hatching success of the copepod Temora longicornis were measured in laboratory experiments and in the field (North Sea). In the laboratory, ingestion of four algal species (Thalassiosira weissflogii, Phaeocystis globosa, Isochrysis sp. and Dunaliella tertiolecta) was followed and the content of fatty acids in the algae was determined. The two food types (T. weissflogii and Isochrysis sp.) that provided the highest ingestion of carbon and long chain fatty acids also resulted in the highest egg production rate (Er) and hatching success (H%). In contrast, D. tertiolecta led to both low ingestion of carbon and long chain fatty acids, resulting in low reproductive success. There was a positive relationship between the amount of eicosapentaenoic fatty acid [20:5(n-3), EPA] ingested and Er and H%, and of the ratio between docosahexaenoic and eicosapentaenoic fatty acid [22:6(n-3)/20:5(n-3), DHA/EPA] in the ingested food and H%. In the field, chlorophyll a and specific fatty acids were measured and protists were enumerated, in order to investigate the link between these factors and the reproductive success of T. longicornis. Hatching time was found to be related to temperature and exceeded 120 h at 6°C. No relationship was found between chlorophyll a and reproductive success (Er or H%). Er correlated with the concentration of diatoms and ciliates, which were the dominating protists in early spring, indicating that food quantity was the limiting factor for Er. As in the laboratory experiments, H% was dependent on the fatty acid DHA and the ratio of DHA/EPA, which indicates that the quality of eggs (H%) is linked to the quality of food.Communicated by M. Studies were carried out to determine the toxicity of some selected pesticides on fresh water fish in a tropical environment. The uptake of the pesticides lindane, pentachlorophenol (PCP), and propoxur, which are frequently used by farmers and industrialists were studied in concrete ponds at the University of Cape Coast, in Ghana. The fishes used for the study were Oreochromis niloticus, Clarias gariepinus, and Chrysicthys nigrodigitatus, and were obtained from cultured ponds in the Cape Coast District and Mankessim in the Central Region and Weija Dam, in the Greater Accra region of Ghana. Single high lethal concentration (SD) or acute treatment and cumulative/chronic (or multiple minor) lethal concentration (CD) treatment were employed in administering the pesticides to the fishes via water. Gas chromatograph (GC) Electron Capture Detector (ECD) analysis was done on the dead fishes to see the extent of ingestion. The LC50 values obtained for lindane on the three fish samples were as follows: Chrysicthys?–?0.38?mg?L?1; Oreochromis?–?0.42?mg?L?1, and Clarias?–?1.2?mg?L?1. Mortalities occurred in fish within 3–5 days of application. For the PCP on Chrysicthys, Oreochromis, and Clarias species the LC50 values were 0.42, 0.32 and 0.64?mg?L?1, respectively for over a 2–3 day period. For a three-time influx period of propoxur the LC50 for Chrysicthys, Oreochromis, and Clarias, were 22.0, 30.40, and 45.04 (all in mg?L?1), respectively. The results obtained indicated that the pesticides had adverse effects on the general growth and reproduction of fishes. Gonadosomatic indices also showed that the pesticides affected the development of the body, the gonads, and their reproduction.  相似文献

Fatty acids were extracted from the surface sediments (10 cm) of three sampling sites of Rufiji estuary to infer their sources and biogeochemical pathways. The fatty acids ranging from C8 to C24 were distinguished from this study, and were broadly classified into saturated (SFAs), monounsaturated (MUFAs) and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs). SFAs were found to be the major fraction at station 1 and 3 where as at station 2, MUFAs dominated. A total of 19 fatty acids with a total concentration of 64.91 μg/g dry weight were characterised at station 1. C16:0 was the most abundant fatty acid contributing 21.94% of total fatty acids (TFAs). C22:2 was the second most abundant, which accounted for 9.46% of TFAs. Fatty acids ranging from C12 to C24 were identified at station 2. C20 fatty acid was the most abundant fatty acid contributing 21.94%, followed by C16:0. At station 3, fatty acids ranging from C8 to C24 were obtained. The PUFA C20:5n-3 was the most abundant fatty acid contributing 21.65%, followed by C24:0 (15.00% of TFAs). The ratio of lower molecular weight (LMW) to higher molecular weight (HMW) biomarkers was used as an indicators to distinguish higher plants organic matter from algae-derived fatty acids.  相似文献

The effect of the spin-trap α-phenyl-N-t-butylnitrone (PBN) on the formation of fatty acid dimers induced by the anoxic microsomal metabolism of tetrachloromethane was investigated in vitro, in particular, with respect to cross-linking of arachidonic acid with a second one (C20–C20) and of arachidonic acid with docosahexaenoic acid (C20–C22). PBN exerted no effect on anaerobic tetrachloromethane metabolism but inhibited dimer formation, half-maximally at a concentration of 0.1 mmol L?1. Trichloromethyl octadecenoic acid was also found, but at levels 10-fold lower than the fatty acid dimers. The data suggest that the hepato-protective effect of PBN against tetrachloromethane-toxicity may be due to its ability to scavenge fatty acid radicals, resulting in stable, non-reactive entities, which do not undergo secondary reactions such as cross-linking. The data confirm and extend previous findings that crosslinking plays an important role in tetrachloromethane toxicity and similar cases of metabolic radical-induced toxicity.  相似文献

The lipid composition of tropical marine reef fishes is poorly known, despite their use as food by local human populations and recent interest in health-related benefits of fish lipids. We examined the composition of lipids from epaxial muscle, liver, and two storage sites [mesenteries surrounding the gut (intraperitoneal fat, IPFs) and retroperitoneal fat bodies (FBs) posterior to the peritoneal cavity] in three species of surgeonfishes from Ishigaki Island, Japan: Naso lituratus (Bloch and Schneider, 1801), Acanthurus lineatus (Linnaeus, 1758), and A. bariene (Lesson, 1830). Triacylglycerols dominated all samples of neutral lipid and constituted ≥ 99% of FBs and IPFs. Polar lipids generally contained large fractions of phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphatidylcholine. Quantified fatty acids ranged in length from C14 to C24. C16 fatty acids prevailed (>35% of neutral fatty acids, >23% of polar fatty acids), although C18 (>16 and >14%, respectively) and C20 acids (>8 and >19%, respectively) were also common. Saturated fatty acids, dominated by palmitic acid (16:0), comprised 38.7 to 50.7% of acids from neutral lipids and 30.8 to 41.1% from polar lipids. The most common monounsaturated acids were 18:1n9 and 20:1n9. Polyunsaturated acids were prevalent in polar lipids (especially 20:4n6, 20:5n3, 22:2n3, 22:5n3, 22:5n6 and 22:6n3). Common polyunsaturated acids of neutral lipids were 18:2n6, 18:4n3, several n-3 and n-6 C20 acids, 22:2n3 and 22:5n3. IPF and FB were almost identical across species, and lipids of fat bodies (IPFs, FBs) were more similar to those of muscle than those of liver for all three species. The FBs appear to constitute an accessory storage site, which overcomes constraints on lipid storage imposed by a small, inflexible abdominal cavity that contains both viscera and consistently voluminous gut contents. Fatty acid signatures indicate that largely overlooked epiphytic or epilithic diatoms contribute significantly to lipid acquisition. The combination of large quantities of both saturated and n-3 and other polyunsaturated fatty acids in surgeonfishes, in contrast to low saturates and high polyunsaturated acids in lipids of commercially important cool-water fishes, suggests that a study of dietary effects of fish lipids on human inhabitants of the tropics may be instructive insofar as human health and nutrition are concerned. Ecological and physiological studies focused on dietary preferences, lipid biochemistry and energetics within the three Antarctic chaetognaths Eukrohnia hamata, E. bathypelagica and E. bathyantarctica from meso- and bathypelagic depths. Eukrohnia hamata and E. bathypelagica respired 0.15 μL O2 mg dry mass (DM)−1 h−1, which translates to an average metabolic loss of only <1.1% of body carbon per day. Lipid storage was not substantial in E. bathypelagica (mean 11.5 ± 6.5% DM) and E. bathyantarctica (mean 15.4 ± 4.1% DM) during summer and winter, suggesting year-round feeding of these predators mainly on copepods. In E. bathypelagica, total fatty acids were dominated by the fatty acids 16:0, 20:5(n-3) and 22:6(n-3) and in E. bathyantarctica also by 18:1(n-9), a fatty acid usually found in storage lipids. Only the latter species was characterized by significant amounts of wax esters, consisting largely of the common fatty alcohols 16:0, 20:1(n-9) and the unusual fatty alcohol isomer 22:1(n-9).  相似文献

With the increase of water hardness from 60 to 720?mg/L CaCO3, total alkalinity from 32 to 376?mg/L CaCO3, pH from 7.6 to 7.9 and chloride from 28 to 350?mg/L, 96?h LC50 on the basis of total lead increased from 8.2 to 1291?mg/L for Cyprinus carpio and 5.3 to 865?mg/L for Catla catla, when soil sediments were included these values were further raised to 1356 and 874?mg/L, respectively. The dissolved lead LC50 values in all the treatments of soil and water was consistent with fixed amount of dissolved lead (1.04–1.78?mg/L) being needed for median lethal toxicity. Total lead toxicity also decreased with increase in pH from 6.3 to 11.3. 96?h LC50 values increased for common carp 15 to 631?mg/L and for catla, 8 to 355?mg/L. But dissolved lead toxicity was found to increase with the increase of pH from 6.3 to 11.3 for both common carp (LC50, 3.53 to 0.24?mg/L) and catla (LC50, 2.21 to 0.09?mg/L). Removal of dissolved Pb with increasing carbonate content, particulate matter and pH due to adsorption, precipitation or coprecipitation reaction, reduced the dissolved lead concentration and thus the total lead toxicity. Increase in toxicity of lead with increase of exposure time was the biological response of longer contact time and decrease in dissolved lead toxicity with decrease in pH was due to increase H+ ion competition.  相似文献

The invasive caprellid amphipod Caprella mutica is one of the most widely dispersed marine non-native species globally. Originating in sub-boreal north-east Asia, it has now been found in both the northern and the southern hemispheres. One potential reason why this species is such a successful invader is its ability to utilise a wide variety of food sources. The contribution of different food sources to the diet of C. mutica was estimated using fatty acids as biomarkers. Caprella mutica was collected from three field sites, including sea cages stocked with Atlantic salmon Salmo salar, shellfish longlines stocked with the blue mussel Mytilus edulis and mooring lines marking the Loch Linnhe Artificial Reef (>2 km from caged finfish aquaculture), where established populations of this species are known to occur. In addition, the fatty acid compositions of C. mutica held in aquaria and either fed the microalga, Dunaliella tertiolecta, or the diatom, Phaeodactylum tricornutum, for a period of 21 days were investigated. The fatty acid composition of the diatom and the microalgal diets was also examined. The results showed that C. mutica contained high levels of polyunsaturated fatty acids, particularly 20:5(n-3); other dominant fatty acids included 18:1(n-9), 22:6(n-3) and 16:0 (in decreasing order based on abundance). Significant differences in the fatty acid profiles between caprellids fed on the microalgae and the diatom diets and between C. mutica collected from the field sites were observed. These results provide evidence that lipid biomarkers can be successfully used to provide evidence of feeding strategy for C. mutica and that the flexibility observed in this strategy may play an important role in its invasion success.  相似文献

The effect of the chemical composition of food on the reproductive success of the copepods Acartia tonsa Dana and A. hudsonica Pinhey was studied in the laboratory. Laboratory-reared individuals were fed one of three monoalgal diets at different stages of growth: the diatom Thalassiosira weissflogii, the flagellate Rhodomonas lens and the dinoflagellte Prorocentrum minimum. The diet was analyzed for carbon, nitrogen, protein, carbohydrate and fatty acid content. Reproductive success was measured as eggs female-1 day-1 (E r) and as the hatching success of the eggs. The E r of Acartia spp. was correlated with protein and specific fatty acids [16:17 (negative), 20:53, 22:63, and 18:0 (positive)] and, especially, the fatty acid composition of the algae expressed as the 3:6 and 20:22 fatty acid ratios. The youngest diatom cultures and exponentially-growing flagellates displayed the highest E r; the lowest E r was recorded for females fed the senescent diatom cultures. The development time of eggs was affected by the age of the phytoplankton culture fed to the female. Hatching success of eggs decreased with the age of the algal culture, but no correlation was found with the meansured chemical components of the food.  相似文献

Abstract: Lethal control, which has been used to reduce local abundances of animals in conflict with humans or with endangered species, may not achieve management goals if animal movement is not considered. In populations with emigration and immigration, lethal control may induce compensatory immigration, if the source of attraction remains unchanged. Within the Columbia River Basin (Washington, U.S.A.), avian predators forage at dams because dams tend to reduce rates of emigration of juvenile salmonids (Oncorhynchus spp.), artificially concentrating these prey. We used differences in fatty acid profiles between Caspian Terns (Hydroprogne caspia) at coastal and inland breeding colonies and terns culled by a lethal control program at a mid‐Columbia River dam to infer dispersal patterns. We modeled the rate of loss of fatty acid biomarkers, which are fatty acids that can be traced to a single prey species or groups of species, to infer whether and when terns foraging at dams had emigrated from the coast. Nonmetric multidimensional scaling showed that coastal terns had high levels of C20 and C22 monounsaturated fatty acids, whereas fatty acids of inland breeders were high in C18:3n3, C20:4n6, and C22:5n3. Models of the rate of loss of fatty acid showed that approximately 60% of the terns collected at Rock Island Dam were unlikely to have bred successfully at local (inland) sites, suggesting that terns foraging at dams come from an extensive area. Fatty acid biomarkers may provide accurate information about patterns of dispersal in animal populations and may be extremely valuable in cases where populations differ demonstrably in prey base.  相似文献

This work was undertaken to ascertain the impact of different fluence rates of ultraviolet-B (UV-B) radiation on two cyanobacterial biofertilizers, Phormidium foveolarum and Nostoc muscorum, growing under copper toxicity. Copper (2 and 5?µmol?L?1) and high UV-B fluence rate (UV-BH; 1.0?µmol?m?2?s?1) decreased the growth, pigment content, photosynthetic oxygen yield, phosphate uptake, and acid phosphatase activity in both the strains analyzed after 24 and 72?h of experiments, and combined exposure further enhanced the toxic effects. Respiration and alkaline phosphatase activities were stimulated appreciably. The damaging effect was shown on the order on pigments: phycocyanin?>?chlorophyll a?>?carotenoids, and on photosystems: whole chain photosynthetic reaction?>?photosystem II?>?photosystem I. Partial recovery in the photosystem II activity in the presence of artificial electron donors; diphenyl carbazide (DPC), hydroxylamine (NH2OH), and manganese chloride (MnCl2) pointed out the interruption of electron flow on the oxidation side of photosystem II. Unlike UV-BH, low UV-B fluence rate (UV-BL; 0.1?µmol?m?2?s?1), rather than causing damaging effect partially, alleviated the toxic effects of Cu. This study suggests that the cyanobacterium P. foveolarum is less sensitive against UV-BH and excess Cu (2 and 5?µmol?L?1), thus P. foveolarum may be used as a biofertilizer for sustainable agriculture.  相似文献

Sublethal effects of chromium trioxide on mosquito fish, Gambusia affinis, were carried out for 28 days on day 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, and 28. The sublethal effects of chromium (LC10, 77.62?mg?L?1) on antioxidant enzymes, thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARS), locomotor behavior, and gill morphology were studied. The antioxidant enzymes like superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase were induced throughout the exposure span of 28 days. Percent induction was also increase with the days of exposure. Lipid peroxidation product, malondialdehyde was enhanced in the viscera tissue of chromium-exposed fish. Perturbation of locomotor behavior like decrease in distance travelled (m?min?1) and in swimming speed (cm?s?1) was observed in exposed fish. Chromium toxicity caused alterations in gill morphology like hypertrophy and hyperplasia in secondary lamellae followed by detached epithelium with severe necrosis. It can be concluded from the results that Cr intoxication in Gambusia fish, caused induction in antioxidant enzymes and lipid peroxidation, plus changes in gill morphology and locomotor behavior.  相似文献

To test whether heterotrophic protists modify precursors of long chain n−3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCn−3PUFAs) present in the algae they eat, two algae with different fatty acid contents (Rhodomonas salina and Dunaliella tertiolecta) were fed to the heterotrophic protists Oxyrrhis marina Dujardin and Gyrodinium dominans Hulbert. These experiments were conducted in August 2004. Both predators and prey were analyzed for fatty acid composition. To further test the effects of trophic upgrading, the calanoid copepod Acartia tonsa Dana was fed R. salina, D. tertiolecta, or O. marina that had been growing on D. tertiolecta (OM-DT) in March 2005. Our results show that trophic upgrading was species-specific. The presence of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) in the heterotrophic protists despite the lack of these fatty acids in the algal prey suggests that protists have the ability to elongate and desaturate 18:3 (n−3), a precursor of LCn−3PUFAs, to EPA and/or DHA. A lower content of these fatty acids was detected in protists that were fed good-quality algae. Feeding experiments with A. tonsa showed that copepods fed D. tertiolecta had a significantly lower content of EPA and DHA than those fed OM-DT. The concentration of EPA was low on both diets, while DHA content was highest in A. tonsa fed R. salina and OM-DT. These results suggest that O. marina was able to trophically upgrade the nutritional quality of the poor-quality alga, and efficiently supplied DHA to the next trophic level. The low amount of EPA in A. tonsa suggests EPA may be catabolized by the copepod.  相似文献

Ecotoxicity of nanoparticles has received growing attention in recent years. This study investigated the influence of silver nanoparticles (Ag-NP) on earthworm Eisenia fetida. The experiment was performed with five test groups: control (without Ag-NP), 10?nm Ag-NP groups (20, 100 or 500?mg?kg?1) and positive control (787?mg?kg?1 AgNO3). After 14-day acute exposure, activities of various enzymes, including glutathione S-transferase (GST), glutathione reductase (GR), acid phosphatase (AP), and Na+, K+-ATPase were determined. Effects of Ag-NP with different sizes (10 and 80?nm) were also tested. Data showed that the activity of GR was significantly lower at 500?mg?kg?1. The activities of AP and Na+, K+-ATPase were inhibited following the increase of Ag-NP concentration. When treated with Ag-NP with different sizes, activities of AP and Na+, K+-ATPase of the 10?nm group were significantly lower than the control group, but those of the 80?nm group were similar to the control group. Data indicate that Ag-NP may be harmful to the earthworm E. fetida at 500?mg?kg?1, and the toxicity of Ag-NP with 10?nm size is greater than 80?nm. In addition, AP and Na+, K+-ATPase are sensitive biomakers to the effects of Ag-NP.  相似文献

The reaction mechanism and pathway of the ozonation of 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (2,4,6-TCP) in aqueous solution were investigated. The removal efficiency and the variation of H2O2, Cl? formic acid, and oxalic acid were studied during the semi-batch ozonation experiments (continuous for ozone gas supply, fixed volume of water sample). The results showed that when there was no scavenger, the removal efficiency of 0.1 mmol/L 2,4,6-TCP could reach 99% within 6 min by adding 24 mg/L ozone. The reaction of molecular ozone with 2,4,6-TCP resulted in the formation of H2O2. The maximal concentration of H2O2 detected during the ozonation could reach 22.5% of the original concentration of 2,4,6-TCP. The reaction of ozone with H2O2 resulted in the generation of a lot of OH? radicals. Therefore, 2,4,6-TCP was degraded to formic acid and oxalic acid by ozone and OH? radicals together. With the inhibition of OH? radicals, ozone molecule firstly degraded 2,4,6-TCP to form chlorinated quinone, which was subsequently oxidized to formic acid and oxalic acid. Two reaction pathways of the degradation of 2,4,6-TCP by ozone and O3/OH? were proposed in this study.  相似文献

Degradation and toxicity reduction of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) were investigated using TiO2 adsorption, vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) photolysis, and VUV/TiO2 photocatalysis in acidic and basic aqueous solutions. Chemical analyses of PFOA and its selected by-products and an acute toxicity assessment using the luminescent bacteria Vibrio fischeri (Microtox®) were conducted during and after the various treatment methods. PFOA was found to be best treated by VUV/TiO2 at pH 4 with HClO4, as illustrated by the almost complete degradation of PFOA within 360?min and rapid removal of acute microbial toxicity within 60?min. This difference in the efficiency may be attributed to the strong oxidation effectiveness of the radical species generated in acidic media and the electron scavenger effect of the addition of HClO4 in VUV/TiO2 photocatalysis. In addition, the proposed method could effectively decompose other perfluorocarboxylic acid (PFCA) species (C3–C7 perfluoroalkyl groups) if the initial intermediates formed were longer-chain species that degraded stepwise into shorter-chain compounds by VUV photolysis and VUV/TiO2 photocatalysis in acidic and basic aqueous solutions.  相似文献
