Epizoic worms were found to occur on certain coral colonies from reefs off the coast of Eilat (Red Sea). We identified 14 coral species infested by acoelomorph worms at a depth range of 2–50 m. The host corals were all zooxanthellate and included both massive and branching stony corals and a soft coral. Worms from all hosts were identified as belonging to the genus Waminoa and contained two distinct algal symbionts differing in size. The smaller one was identified as Symbiodinium sp. and the larger one is presumed to belong to the genus Amphidinium. Worm-infested colonies of the soft coral, Stereonephthya cundabiluensis, lacked a mucus layer and exhibited distinct cell microvilli, a phenotype not present in colonies lacking Waminoa sp. In most cases, both cnidarian and Acoelomorph hosts displayed high specificity for genetically distinctive Symbiodinium spp. These observations show that the epizoic worms do not acquire their symbionts from the “host” coral.  相似文献

The corallimorpharian Rhodactis rhodostoma (Ehrenberg, 1934) forms aggregations that dominate patches on some coral reef flats in the Red Sea. The outcomes and mechanisms of competition for space between this corallimorpharian and other sessile organisms are poorly understood. Polyps of R. rhodostoma were observed to overgrow zoanthids, hydrozoan corals, sponges and encrusting macroalgae on a fringing reef at Eilat, northern Red Sea. R. rhodostoma polyps also damaged, and in some cases overgrew, reef-building corals in the families Poritidae, Acroporidae and Pocilloporidae, most of which form branching colonies with small polyps that are subordinate in coral competitive hierarchies. In contrast, most stony corals in the families Faviidae and Mussidae had standoff interactions with R. rhodostoma, in which they prevented the corallimorpharians from damaging them or approaching closer than 1 to 3 cm. The latter corals are ranked at the top of competitive hierarchies for Indo-Pacific corals, and they form massive colonies of large polyps which may develop aggressive organs termed sweeper tentacles. Some soft corals that exude allelopathic chemicals also avoided overgrowth by the corallimorpharians. Tentacles along the oral disk margin of R. rhodostoma polyps were swollen and bulbous during contacts with cnidarians. These bulbous marginal tentacles had significantly thicker ectoderm and a higher proportion of holotrichous nematocysts than did the normally filiform marginal tentacles of R. rhodostoma polyps. It is concluded that, on the reef flat at Eilat, this corallimorpharian damages and overgrows a variety of sessile competitors, including branching stony corals, via the application of specialised marginal tentacles filled with penetrating nematocysts. R. rhodostoma is an intermediate competitor in the aggressive hierarchy among Indo-Pacific Anthozoa, including the reef-building corals. Received: 1 July 1998 / Accepted: 24 March 1999  相似文献

Polyps of the corallimorpharian Rhodactis rhodostoma (Ehrenberg, 1934) form aggregations that monopolise patches of space on the shallow reef flats of some Red Sea coral reefs. Some of these polyps bear specialised bulbous marginal tentacles (BMTs) where they contact cnidarian competitors. BMTs differ from the normally filiform marginal tentacles (FMTs) of R. rhodostoma, and appear to develop from them. However, their morphogenesis and long-term impacts on spatial competition with reef corals are unknown. We experimentally induced contacts between R. rhodostoma polyps and colonies of the branching stony coral Acropora eurystoma on a shallow coral reef at Eilat, northern Red Sea. During the first 24 d of contact, the A. eurystoma colonies extruded mesenterial filaments that damaged the tissues of the corallimorpharian polyps. After 18 d,>90% of R. rhodostoma individuals had developed BMTs, which resulted in a reversal in the direction of competitive damage. During the subsequent 1.5 years of observation, the corallimorpharians maintained well-developed BMTs, unilaterally damaged the tissues of A. eurystoma, and in some cases moved onto the stony coral skeletons and partially overgrew them. BMTs developed from FMTs in a series of four distinct stages, accompanied by significant changes in their morphology, cnidom, and density of nematocysts. Isolated control polyps did not develop BMTs or show any signs of damage. In contrast, corallimorpharian polyps transplanted into contact with colonies of the massive stony coral Platygyra daedalea began to develop sporadic BMTs, but were unilaterally and severely damaged by the corals, and started to disappear within 21 d, after the corals developed sweeper tentacles. We conclude that long-term outcomes of competition between R. rhodostoma and reef-building corals depend largely on the relative aggressive reach of the competitive mechanisms developed by each species. As a consequence, this corallimorpharian is an intermediate competitor in the aggressive hierarchy among Indo-Pacific reef corals. This study confirms that R. rhodostoma polyps may actively damage and overgrow some stony corals, leading to the formation of an almost continuous blanket of polyps in large patches of some shallow reef flats. Recruitment rates of stony corals to artificial substrates were monitored for 2 years at 20 sites along the coast of Eilat, northern Red Sea, to compare with those recorded at other coral reef locations and to assess variation in recruitment at several spatial scales. Coral recruitment was low compared to that observed on the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, but was similar to levels reported from other high-latitude reef locations. Pocilloporids were the most abundant coral recruits in all seasons. Recruitment was twofold higher during the first year than during the second year of study. There was considerable spatial variability, with the largest proportion of variance, apart from the error term, attributable to differences between sites, at a scale of 102 m. Spearmans ranked correlation showed consistency in spatial patterns of recruitment of pocilloporid corals between years, but not of acroporid corals. During spring, when only the brooding pocilloporid coral Stylophora pistillata reproduces at this locality, most coral recruitment occurred at central and southern sites adjacent to well-developed coral reefs. During summer, recruitment patterns varied significantly between years, with wide variation in the recruitment of broadcasting acroporid corals at northern sites located distant from coral reefs. Settlement was low at all sites during autumn and winter. This work is the first detailed analysis of coral recruitment patterns in the Red Sea, and contributes to the understanding of the spatial and temporal scales of variation in this important reef process.Communicated by O. Sediment discharges from rivers have a negative impact on coral reef ecosystems. Indicators of coral decline measured in the present study were: (1) injury to living stony corals; (2) soft coral cover; and (3) bare rocky substrate suitable for colonization by corals. The relationship between these indicators and the distribution of terrigenous sediment was studied for the Malindi-Watamu fringing reef complex along the Kenyan coast off East Africa during 1982 and 1983. Decline of this reef had been repeatedly noted during the preceding decade. The influence of terrigenous sediment from the Sabaki River appears to be strongest in the Watamu area in the south and in the northern-most part of the Malindi reef area. Correlations, between each of the above three coral stress response indicators, on the one hand, and quantitative indicators of sediment loading, on the other hand, were not clear. However, a combined coral stress indicator involving all three factors was shown to have a clear relationship with terrigenous sediment loading and provided a rapid means of field evaluation of the effects of sediment stress on stony corals. Values for the combined coral stress indicator were found to increase in proportion to increasing values of terrigenous sediment loads in both study areas. A higher coral stress indicator value means a high proportion of injured or algae infested corals, and/or a high soft coral cover, and/or a high proportion of rocky substrate suitable for, but unoccupied by, living corals.  相似文献

Mechanical stress on the coral Pocillopora damicornis caused the release of material that killed the coral pathogen Vibrio coralliilyticus. The bactericidal material was released into the surrounding seawater rapidly, reaching a maximum killing activity within 1 min of the stress. The coral antibacterial activity, referred to as CAA, was retained following filter sterilization and storage at –20°C. Exposure of V. coralliilyticus to CAA for 30 s, 1 min and 6 min resulted in the death of 82%, 89% and 99% of the bacteria, respectively. Release of CAA following mechanical stress was also observed with four other coral species tested. P. damicornis CAA was bactericidal to a wide variety of Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. This is the first report that hard corals rapidly release fast-acting bactericidal material following mechanical stress. The release of CAA was demonstrated with both aquarium corals and corals taken directly from the sea. It is suggested that CAA is part of hard corals host defense system against infection, the natural stimulation for release of CAAs being the bite of a predator. Previous failures to detect antibacterial activity in hard corals can be attributed to a lack of understanding of the sensitive mechanism by which they are released.Communicated by M. We examined the impact of seven species of mobile mushroom corals (Fungiidae) on the community structure of sheltered reef slopes in terms of their patterns of migration, habitat use and competition with other benthic organisms. On fringing reefs at Eilat, Red Sea, polyps detached at 1 to 6 cm length, and grew to 11–55 cm length. Attached mushroom corals were oriented vertically in reef cavities. Detached corals migrated downward on the reef slope and onto rubble or soft substratum at the reef base, at 29 to 71 cmyr–1. Mobility decreased with corallum size and extent of undersurface ornamentation. In aquaria, small corals righted themselves and migrated up to 6 cm d–1 by nocturnally inflating and pushing their tissues against the substratum. Autonomous coral behavior and storm-generated water motion appeared to account for most fungiid mobility at Eilat. Mushroom corals did not damage each other upon contact, even in multi-species aggregations, but unilaterally damaged non-fungiid scleractinian corals. Their dominance during contact interactions retards overgrowth by larger attached scleractinians, and mobility allows them to colonize soft substrata not accessible to most other reef corals.  相似文献

Molluscan assemblages were studied on fringing reefs (reef flats, Millepora-fringing reefs, fringing reefs with massive corals) and fore-reef hard substrata (coral patches, coral carpets and small patch reefs) in the Gulf of Aqaba at water depths ranging from the intertidal to 26 m. A total of 1,665 molluscan individuals from 51 taxa was counted on 44 transects, which covered 220 m2 at eight diving sites. The most important molluscs in the assemblage were the parasitic gastropod Coralliophila neritoidea, the encrusting gastropod Dendropoma maxima and the coral-associated bivalve Pedum spondyloideum. The dead assemblage, in contrast, was dominated by encrusting bivalves (Ostreoidea, Chamoidea, Spondylidae) and the coral-predating gastropod Drupella cornus. Distinct molluscan assemblages inhabit each of the three fringing reef-habitats and most of the important depth-related community changes occurred within the uppermost 5 m. In contrast, the three deeper fore-reef habitats are characterized by a more uniform molluscan composition. Molluscan assemblages were more dependent on substrata and their coral associations than on water depth. Comparisons with other published studies indicate that reefoidal hard substrata in the northern Red Sea are largely characterized by similar species-abundance patterns. The minor differences to other Red Sea studies probably reflect the northern, isolated position of the Gulf of Aqaba, the lack of certain molluscan habitats, and the differential impact of anthropogenic influences. Strong differences between living and dead assemblages in Aqaba are similar to those observed in other regions and are due to distinct biases in the dead assemblage. Molluscs closely associated with living corals (mostly bivalves and Dendropoma) can easily be overgrown after death and are thus undetectable in visual censuses. Some gastropod taxa are preferentially transported into surrounding soft-substrata postmortem or redistributed by hermit crabs. Such complex relationships between ecology and taphonomy are crucial in evaluating the quality of the molluscan fossil record in coral reef environments. The comparison of our results with literature data documents an increase in coral predators during the last two decades in the northern Red Sea. Due to the greater mollusc biodiversity in the shallower Aqaba reef habitats, damage to this coral reef zone would have the greatest impact on the overall mollusc community.  相似文献

Ecotourism often is promoted as an ecologically sustainable activity, but some ecotourism activities negatively impact coastal ecosystems. Impacts of intensive diving tourism on coral reefs remain poorly understood, especially in the Florida Keys. We determined patterns of recreational dive frequency, diver behaviour, and coral damage on reefs near Key Largo, and assessed how pre-dive briefings and other factors affect these damage rates. Recreational divers contacted live stony corals ~ 18 times per scuba dive; most contacts deposited sediment onto corals, but also caused abrasion to coral tissues and fracture of coral skeletons. Divers who received pre-dive ecological briefings caused significantly less coral damage than those who did not, and divers with cameras and/or gloves caused the most damage. The proportion of damaged corals increased significantly with the estimated rate of recreational diving on each reef, and the percent cover of live corals decreased. We conclude that current rates of recreational diving in Key Largo are unsustainable, resulting in damage to >80 % of coral colonies and reduction of live coral cover to <11 % at heavily-dived sites. We recommend that dive tour operators administer pre-dive ecological briefings to all recreational divers, provide extra briefings to camera and glove users, and employ underwater dive guides who intervene when divers inadvertently damage live stony corals. This study provides a scientific basis to support management of intensive ecotourism on Florida coral reefs.  相似文献

Chitinases are involved in defense against chitinaceous pathogens in both invertebrates and vertebrates. This study investigated whether sea fan corals, Gorgonia ventalina (Linnaeus) collected from the Florida Keys between the summer of 2002 and the summer of 2005 contain chitinases, and whether these enzymes could serve an analogous protective role against the fungal pathogen, Aspergillus sydowii (Thom et Church). Crude extracts of healthy sea fans contained detectible levels of exochitinase activity in an in vitro microplate assay using fluorogenic substrates. The exochitinase levels decreased upon injury, agitation, or manipulation of the tissue. A concurrent, transient increase of exochitinase in the surrounding water suggests that sea fans release chitinases as a response to these stresses. By contrast, endochitinase was detected in only 2 of 15 sea fans (13%), suggesting a high degree of variation for this enzyme. Sea fan chitinase-containing seawater and anion exchange chromatography fractions were both active against A. sydowii in an absorbance-based antifungal assay. The presence of chitinases in sea fan extracts, their release into the surrounding water upon stress, and their activity against A. sydowii suggests that further study of these enzymes in coral stress responses is warranted.  相似文献

Depth distribution, zonation pattern and growth morphology of 17 hermatypic and 4 ahermatypic coral species were investigated at eight different locations along the Bermuda platform with the research submersible GEO and by SCUBA diving in August–September 1983. Hermatypic coral growth occurs to a depth of 50 to 70 m, with a single Montastrea cavernosa growing at 78 m. Dominant forms in shallow-water coral communities are Diploria sp. and Porites astreoides, while M. cavernosa, Agaricia fragilis and Scolymia cubensis occur in deep-water associations below 60 m. Vertical visibilities (up to 178 m) and distribution of the photosynthetically active radiation revealed good light penetration values (1% level at about 100 m depth), which should favour hermatypic coral growth to a much greater depth than it actually occurs. Nor should the prevailing temperatures limit the depth of coral growth. Most deep-water hermatypes observed grow on remnants of Pleistocene reefs down to about 60 m. The vast areas of large massed rhodolith nodules below 50 to 60 m are unsuitable bottom for coral colonisation. Macroalgae growth seems to be the strongest factor controlling coral growth in deep water. Bermuda stony corals have a low growth form diversity. Various intraspecific morphs may occur at the same as well as at different depths, with a general trend towards flatter shapes with depth. Comparison with a similar study on Red Sea corals suggests that annual distribution of radiant energy on the most northern Atlantic reefs of Bermuda may be responsible for the occurrence of flat and cuplike growth forms in relatively shallow water, and for the shallower depth limits of hermatypic growth.  相似文献

Sediment deposition on coral reefs occurs naturally and is also caused by man-made disturbances such as dredging; it can result in the death of scleractinian corals by an unknown mechanism. Sedimentation experiments with corals were carried out in El Nido, Northern Palawan, Philippines, in 1986, and in Honolulu, Oahu, Hawaii in 1988. Four species of Indo-Pacific reef corals (Oxypora glabra, Montipora verrucosa, Porites lobata, Pocillopora meandrina) were subjected to sedimentation tests with and without the antibiotic tetracycline to investigate the possible role of microorganisms in the process of sedimentation damage to corals.O. glabra, Porites lobata andPocillopora meandrina were rapidly damaged andO. glabra was always killed by sedimentation.Montipora verrucosa was not injured and may be physiologically resistant to sedimentation damage. Tetracyclinetreated seawater reduced the rate of tissue necrosis and prevented colony mortality, suggesting that tetracycline-sensitive bacteria are involved in the process of tissue necrosis and may be partially responsible for coral mortality following sediment deposition.  相似文献

Mucus released by scleractinian corals can act as an important energy and nutrient carrier in coral reef ecosystems, and a distinct isotopic signature would allow following the fate of this material. This study investigates the natural C and N stable isotopic signatures of mucus released by four scleractinian coral genera (Acropora, Fungia, Pocillopora and Stylophora) in comparison with those of suspended particulate organic matter (POM) in seawater of a Northern Red Sea fringing coral reef near Aqaba, Jordan. The natural δ13C and δ15N signatures of coral mucus differed significantly from seawater POM for the majority of seasonal comparisons, but were inappropriate for explicit tracing of mucus in the coral reef food web. Thus, a labeling technique using stable isotope tracers (13C and 15N) was developed that produced δ13C values of up to 122 ± 5‰ (mean ± SE) and δ15N of up to 2,100 ± 151‰ in mucus exuded by Fungia corals. 13C and 15N-enriched compounds were rapidly (within 3 h) and light-dependently transferred from the endosymbiotic zooxanthellae to the mucus-producing coral host. The traceability of 15N-labeled mucus was examined by evaluating its uptake and potential utilization by epizoic acoelomorph Waminoa worms naturally occurring on a range of scleractinian coral taxa. This tracer experiment resulted in uptake of coral mucus by the coral-associated acoelomorphs and further demonstrated the possibility to trace stable isotope-labeled coral mucus by revealing a new trophic pathway in coral reef ecosystems.  相似文献

Although coral dwelling fishes are common on coral reefs, the nature of their effect on the host corals is poorly understood. The present study, conducted in the Gulf of Eilat (Red Sea) between July 1989 and August 1990, demonstrated that the branching coral Stylophora pistillata (Esper) benefits, in two components of coral fitness, from the presence of the damselfish Dascyllus marginatus (Rüppell), an obligate coral dweller. The growth rate of damselfish-inhabited corals was significantly higher than that of corals without damselfish. This was observed, using two growth assessment methods, in long-term (>7 mo) comparisons between: (1) corals where the damselfish were experimentally removed versus corals with unaltered fish groups; and (2) naturally inhabited versus non-inhabited corals. The presence of damselfish did not affect the coral's specific (per surface area) reproductive output, whether it was assessed by the number of female gonads per polyp or by the number of planulae released cm-2 surface area d-1. However, the more rapid increase in branch size in damselfish-inhabited corals resulted in an apparent increase in the total reproductive output, with age, in growing corals. These findings demonstrate that the association between the damselfish D. marginatus and its host coral, S. pistillata, is mutualistic.  相似文献

A coral pathogen was isolated from the diseased tissue of Pocillopora damicornis in Zanzibar. The pathogenic bacterium, referred to as Vibrio coralyticus YB, was classified as a member of the genus Vibrio. Based on its 16S rDNA sequence, V. coralyticus is probably a new species. In controlled aquaria experiments at 26-29°C, inoculation of pure cultures of V. coralyticus YB either into the seawater or by direct contact onto the coral caused tissue lysis of P. damicornis fragments. At 29°C, lysis began as small white spots after 3-5 days, rapidly spreading so that by 2 weeks the entire tissue was destroyed, leaving only the intact bare skeleton. When an infected diseased coral was placed in direct contact with a healthy one, the healthy coral lysed in 2-4 days, further indicating that the disease was contagious. Inoculation with as few as 30 bacteria ml-1 was sufficient to infect and lyse corals. Seawater temperature was a critical variable for the infectious process: infection and lysis occurred rapidly at 27-29°C, slowly at 26°C and was not observed at 25°C. The data suggest that the presence of V. coralyticus YB, even in low numbers, in seawater surrounding a coral reef will lead to tissue destruction of P. damicornis, when seawater temperatures rise.  相似文献

Reproductive patterns of scleractinian corals in the northern Red Sea   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The majority of published accounts on scleractinian coral reproduction are from the tropical Pacific and Caribbean, with very little information known about Red Sea species. This report examines variation in reproductive mode in 24 species of hermatypic corals (belonging to seven families) in the Gulf of Eilat, Red Sea. Eighteen species are hermaphroditic broadcasters, two are hermaphroditic brooders and three are gonochoric broadcasters. In the Pocilloporidae, the gonads project into the body cavity, while in the other six families the gonads reside inside the mesenteries. The number of gonads per polyp in broadcasting species follows family or genus lines. Fecundity (eggs per polyp) increases with polyp size. Brooding species usually exhibit one or two gonads per polyp and each gonad contains only one to three oocytes. Oocyte size varies widely and does not relate to mode of reproduction. The largest oocytes (diameter = 450 μm) occur in the brooding coral Alveopora daedalea and in broadcasting species of the genus Acropora (diameter = 420 μm). Gonad morphology and gonochorism versus hermaphroditism appear to be constrained phylogenetically at the family or genus level. Lastly, this report compares the data presented for Red Sea scleractinian species with the data available on scleractinian corals from other geographical regions. The community structure and species diversity of hermatypic corals was studied during 1969–1973, in two reef flats in the northern Gulf of Eilat, Red Sea: the reef flat of the nature reserve at Eilat, which is chronically polluted by oil and minerals, and a control reef, located 5 km further south, which is free from oil pollution. In 1969, the nature reserve and the control reef had similar coral community structure. In September, 1970, both reefs suffered approximately 90% mortality of corals, as a result of an unexpected and extremely low tide. In 1973 the control reef was “blooming” with a highly diverse coral community, while almost no signs of coral recolonization have been observed at the nature reserve, and it is significantly lower in diversity. It is suggested that phosphate eutrophication and chronic oil pollution are the major man-made disturbances that interfere with coral colonization of the reef flat at the nature reserve. Although no direct evidence is provided that oil damages hermatypic corals, the data strongly suggest that chronic oil spills prevent normal settlement and/or development of coral larvae. It is possible that chronic oil, pollution results in either one or a combination of the following: (1) damage to the reproductive system of corals; (2) decreased viability of coral larvae; (3) changes in some physical properties of the reef flat which interfere with normal settlement of coral larvae.  相似文献

Gobiid fishes of the genus Gobiodon live in strong association with certain reef-building corals that vary considerably in size and architecture. These fishes hence are excellent model systems for studying evolutionary adaption to specific microhabitats. Using a sample of Gobiodon histrio and G. rivulatus and their most important host corals (Acropora digitifera and A. gemmifera) from the northern Red Sea, we assess (1) how corals that are occupied by gobies differ in their architecture from colonies that are not occupied and (2) how fish body shape is associated with the architecture of their host coral. Fish body shape was assessed by geometric morphometric techniques. Coral measurements included colony size, branch length (BL), and interbranch as well as branch tip distance of adjacent branches, for which we applied a new and non-destructive measurement technique based on casts of two-component epoxy resin. The most important factor influencing the occupation of corals was a BL of more than 5 cm. The distance between coral branches was clearly related to the width of the fishes and hence constrained overall fish size. G. histrio and G. rivulatus differ in adult body shape as well in their allometric development of lateral body compression, resulting in different maximum body sizes attainable in the restricted interbranch space of corals. The strong dependence of coral-associated fishes on large coral colonies with specific architectures increases the extinction risk of fishes within deteriorating coral reefs.  相似文献

The potency of free-living and animal-associated marine bacteria to produce antimicrobial substances has been studied in 491 strains isolated from northern and southern parts of the Pacific Ocean. A total of 26% (126 out of 491) of the strains examined produced antimicrobial compounds against 11 test bacterial strains (TBS) including the fish pathogens Aeromonas hydrophila and Vibrio anquillarum. Antimicrobial substances (AS) produced by marine bacteria were especially active against Staphylococcus epidermidis, Proteus vulgaris, Enterococcus faecalis, and Candida albicans. Twelve strains, isolated from different sources, were chosen as promising candidates, producing a number of AS. Production of AS varied within 24 to 72 h, increasing in a culture medium based on natural sea water with Br-ions, and after attachment to polymeric surfaces. In order to study the influence of adsorption, selected strains with a high potential for antimicrobial production were cultivated on polymeric surfaces with different hydrophobicities and chemical functionalities. These parameters of the surface hydrophobicity (measured by means of water contact angles) and chemical functionality of the surfaces were manipulated using the photo- and thermochemistry of a polymeric system (diazo-naphto-quinone/novolak) commonly used as a photoresistant material in semiconducto-manufacturing. The highest antimicrobial activities occurred on hydrophilic surfaces (standard exposed photoresistant films), whereas the number of attached cells was greater on hydrophobic surfaces, characterized as unexposed resistant films. These results suggest that the chemical nature of induced hydrophilicity may also be a major factor in controlling antimicrobial activity of adsorbed bacteria.
