Agricultural waste burning is a widespread practice throughout the world but there is little information about its pollutant impact. This paper deals with a preliminary study of the pollution observed in Vitoria (Northern Spain) caused by cereal waste burning. The mean hourly flux of pollutants produced by cereal waste burning fires can reach values of 1.4 kt of CO2, 13 t of TPM and 3 t of NOx in the area around Vitoria. Measurements obtained in the area of emission and inside fire plumes show high ratios (NO2/NOx) indicating that nitrogen oxides emitted by the source undergo a rapid transformation in the same area of emission. Results relating to aerosol composition collected in Vitoria during burning periods show an increase in the concentration of K+, NO3 and Cl ions, that are inter-correlated. The modification of the ionic composition of aerosols also affects the chemistry of the rain collected in Vitoria. During the burning period, it is particularly noticeable that anthropogenic pollution (usually identifiable by the correlation between SO42− and NO3 concentrations) disappears, indicating the existence of an independent source of NO3 not linked to the SO42− source. Similar results were deduced studying BAPMON data collected in Spain during cereal waste burning. Finally, we note that ozone concentration measured at Vitoria is not affected by the pollution generated by the burning fires.  相似文献

A laboratory study was conducted to examine formation of secondary organic aerosols. A smog chamber system was developed for studying gas–aerosol interactions in a dynamic flow reactor. These experiments were conducted to investigate the fate of gas and aerosol phase compounds generated from hydrocarbon–nitrogen oxide (HC/NOx) mixtures irradiated in the presence of fine (<2.5 μm) particulate matter. The goal was to determine to what extent photochemical oxidation products of aromatic hydrocarbons contribute to secondary organic aerosol formation through uptake on pre-existing inorganic aerosols in the absence of liquid water films. Irradiations were conducted with toluene, p-xylene, and 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene in the presence of NOx and ammonium sulfate aerosol, with propylene added to enhance the production of radicals in the system. The secondary organic aerosol yields were determined by dividing the mass concentration of organic fraction of the aerosol collected on quartz filters by the mass concentration of the aromatic hydrocarbon removed by reaction. The mass concentration of the organic fraction was obtained by multiplying the measured organic carbon concentration by 2.0, a correction factor that takes into account the presence of hydrogen, nitrogen, and oxygen atoms in the organic species. The mass concentrations of ammonium, nitrate, and sulfate concentrations as well as the total mass of the aerosols were measured. A reasonable mass balance was found for each of the aerosols. The largest secondary organic aerosol yield of 1.59±0.40% was found for toluene at an organic aerosol concentration of 8.2 μm−3, followed by 1.09±0.27% for p-xylene at 6.4 μg m−3, and 0.41±0.10% for 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene at 2.0 μg m−3. In general, these results agree with those reported by Odum et al. and appear to be consistent with the gas–aerosol partitioning theory developed by Pankow. The presence of organic in the aerosol did not affect significantly the hygroscopic properties of the aerosol.  相似文献

In this study, we present ∼1 yr (October 1998–September 1999) of 12-hour mean ammonia (NH3), ammonium (NH4+), hydrochloric acid (HCl), chloride (Cl), nitrate (NO3), nitric acid (HNO3), nitrous acid (HONO), sulfate (SO42−), and sulfur dioxide (SO2) concentrations measured at an agricultural site in North Carolina's Coastal Plain region. Mean gas concentrations were 0.46, 1.21, 0.54, 5.55, and 4.15 μg m−3 for HCl, HNO3, HONO, NH3, and SO2, respectively. Mean aerosol concentrations were 1.44, 1.23, 0.08, and 3.37 μg m−3 for NH4+, NO3, Cl, and SO42−, respectively. Ammonia, NH4+, HNO3, and SO42− exhibit higher concentrations during the summer, while higher SO2 concentrations occur during winter. A meteorology-based multivariate regression model using temperature, wind speed, and wind direction explains 76% of the variation in 12-hour mean NH3 concentrations (n=601). Ammonia concentration increases exponentially with temperature, which explains the majority of variation (54%) in 12-hour mean NH3 concentrations. Dependence of NH3 concentration on wind direction suggests a local source influence. Ammonia accounts for >70% of NHx (NHx=NH3+NH4+) during all seasons. Ammonium nitrate and sulfate aerosol formation does not appear to be NH3 limited. Sulfate is primarily associated ammonium sulfate, rather than bisulfate, except during the winter when the ratio of NO3–NH4+ is ∼0.66. The annual average NO3–NH4+ ratio is ∼0.25.  相似文献

Atmospheric dry deposition is an important process for the introduction of aerosols and pollutants to aquatic environments. The objective of this paper is to assess, for the first time, the influence that the aquatic surface microlayer plays as a modifying factor of the magnitude of dry aerosol deposition fluxes. The occurrence of a low surface tension (ST) or a hydrophobic surface microlayer has been generated by spiking milli-Q water or pre-filtered seawater with a surfactant or octanol, respectively. The results show that fine mode (<2.7 μm) aerosol phase PAHs deposit with fluxes 2–3 fold higher when there is a low ST aquatic surface due to enhanced sequestration of colliding particles at the surface. Conversely, for PAHs bound to coarse mode aerosols (>2.7 μm), even though there is an enhanced deposition due to the surface microlayer for some sampling periods, the effect is not observed consistently. This is due to the importance of gravitational settling for large aerosols, rendering a lower influence of the aquatic surface on dry deposition fluxes. ST (mN m−1) is identified as one of the key factor driving the magnitude of PAH dry deposition fluxes (ng m−2 d−1) by its influence on PAH concentrations in deposited aerosols and deposition velocities (vd, cm s−1). Indeed, vd values are a function of ST as obtained by least square fitting and given by Ln(vd)=−1.77 Ln(ST)+5.74 (r2=0.95) under low wind speed (average 4 m s−1) conditions.  相似文献

Long-range transport of mineral dust such as Yellow sand (YS) is not restricted to the springtime periods in Northeast Asia. A YS phenomenon was observed during 25–27 January 1999, which was a remarkably distinctive episode in the occurrence time and intensity that had ever observed in the wintertime in Korea. This YS event was traced to be originated from the arid region of central and eastern Asia; the Gobi desert and Loess plateau. The traveling speed of the dust storm was found to be about 70 km h−1 with it's horizontal size of larger than the whole Korean peninsula during this episode. Aerosol mass loadings changed by an order of magnitude within a few hours. The dominant ion components were SO42−, NO3, Ca2+ and Na+ during the passage of YS. The mode diameter of these compounds of YS was around 4 μm, compared to 0.4–0.9 μm after the passage of YS. SO42− and NO3 concentrations were found to be well correlated with Ca2+ concentration in the coarse mode during the YS event, whereas they were well correlated with NH4+ concentration during the non-YS period, indicating a significant amount of SO42− and NO3 formations on the Ca2+-rich coarse aerosol during the long-range transport of YS.  相似文献

Ambient aerosol samples, collected from Mangalore region in the southwest coast of India during the period of late winter (February and March) to early summer (April and May), have been analysed for water-soluble ionic species. Their abundance pattern is dominated by HCO3, SO42−, Na+, Cl, with minor contribution from NO3, Ca2+, NH4+, K+ and Mg2+ indicating the contribution from not only sea salt, but also from anthropogenic and dust sources; with pronounced seasonal variability. The suspended particulate matter concentration varied from 35 to 160 μg m−3, with consistently higher values during the late winter. Back trajectory analysis suggests the origin of the air masses shifting from Indo-Gangetic Plains (during late winter) to those from the Arabian Sea and the area around Persian Gulf during April–May. Air masses passing over Northern India (Indo-Gangetic Plains) impart characteristic contribution of ionic species from fossil fuel combustion, biomass burning and eolian dust as asserted by the factor analysis. A detailed study on characterisation of aerosols from south Asian region is rather sparse but essential for modelling the effect of tropospheric aerosols on climate.  相似文献

Aircraft measurements of air pollutants were made to investigate the characteristic features of long-range transport of sulfur compounds over the Yellow Sea for the periods of 26–27 April and 7–10 November in 1998, and 9–11 April and 19 June in 1999, together with aerosol measurements at the Taean background station in Korea. The overall mean concentrations of SO2, O3 and aerosol number in the boundary layer for the observation period ranged 0.1–7.4 ppb 32.1–64.1 ppb and 1.0–143.6 cm−3, respectively. It was found that the air mass over the Yellow Sea had a character of both the polluted continental air and clean background air, and the sulfur transport was mainly confined in the atmospheric boundary layer. The median of SO2 concentration within the boundary layer was about 0.1–2.2 ppb. However, on 8 November, 1998, the mean concentrations of SO2 and aerosol number increased up to 7.4 ppb and 109.5 cm−3, respectively, in the boundary layer, whereas O3 concentration decreased remarkably. This enhanced SO2 concentration occurred in low level westerly air stream from China to Korea. Aerosol analyses at the downstream site of Taean in Korea showed 2–3 times higher sulfate concentration than that of other sampling days, indicating a significant amount of SO2 conversion to non sea-salt sulfate during the long-range transport.  相似文献

Marine background levels of non-sea-salt- (nss-) SO42− (5.0–9.7 neq m−3), NH4+ (2.1–4.4 neq m−3) and elemental carbon (EC) (40–80 ngC m−3) in aerosol samples were measured over the equatorial and South Pacific during a cruise by the R/V Hakuho-maru from November 2001 to March 2002. High concentrations of nss-SO42− (47–94 neq m−3), NH4+ (35–94 neq m−3) and EC (130–460 ngC m−3) were found in the western North Pacific near the coast of the Asian continent under the influence of the Asian winter monsoon. Particle size distributions of ionic components showed that the equivalent concentrations of nss-SO42− were balanced with those of NH4+ in the size range of 0.06<D<0.22 μm, whereas the concentration ratios of NH4+ to nss-SO42− in the size range of D>0.22 μm were decreased with increase in particle size. We estimated the source contributions of those aerosol components in the marine background air over the equatorial and South Pacific. Biomass burning accounted for the large fraction (80–98% in weight) of EC and the minor fraction (2–4% in weight) of nss-SO42−. Marine biogenic source accounted for several tens percents of NH4+ and nss-SO42−. In the accumulation mode, 70% of particle number existed in the size range of 0.1<D<0.2 μm. In the size rage of 0.06<D<0.22 μm, the dominant aerosol component of (NH4)2SO4 would be mainly derived from the marine biogenic sources.  相似文献

A method is developed to estimate wet deposition of nitrogen in a 11×14 km (0.125°Lon.×0.125°Lat.) grid scale using the precipitation chemistry monitored data at 10 sites scattered over South Korea supplemented by the routinely available precipitation rate data at 65 sites and the estimated emissions of NO2 and NH3 at each precipitation monitoring site. This approach takes into account the contributions of local NO2 and NH3 emissions and precipitation rates on wet deposition of nitrogen. Wet deposition of nitrogen estimated by optimum regression equations for NO3 and NH4+ derived from annual total monitored wet deposition and that of emissions of NO2 and NH3 is incorporated to normalize wet deposition of nitrogen at each precipitation rate class, which is divided into 6 classes. The optimum regression equations for the estimation of wet deposition of nitrogen at precipitation monitoring sites are developed using the normalized wet deposition of nitrogen and the precipitation rate at 10 precipitation chemistry monitoring sites. The estimated average annual total wet depositions of NO3 and NH4+ are found to be 260 and 500 eq ha−1 yr−1 with the maximum values of 400 and 930 eq ha−1 yr−1, respectively. The annual mean total wet deposition of nitrogen is found to be about 760 eq ha−1 yr−1, of which more than 65% is contributed by wet deposition of ammonium while, the emission of NH3 is about half of that of NO2, suggesting the importance of NH3 emission for wet deposition of nitrogen in South Korea.  相似文献

Measurements on size distribution of atmospheric aerosol were made at Dayalbagh, Agra during July to September 1998. A 4-stage cascade particle sampler (CPS - 105) which fractionates particles in sizes ranging between 0.7 and >10.9 μm, was used. Samples were collected on Whatman 41 filters. The filters were analyzed for the major water-soluble ions. The anions (F, Cl, NO3 and SO4) were analyzed by Dionex DX-500 ion chromatograph while atomic absorption and colorimetric techniques were used for the analysis of cations (Na, K, Ca and Mg) and NH4, respectively. The average mass of aerosol was found to be 131.6 μg m−3 and aerosol composition was found to be influenced by terrigeneous sources. The mass size distribution of total aerosol and the ions NH4, Cl, NO3, K, Ca, Mg, SO4 and Na was bimodal while that of F was unimodal. SO4, F, K and NH4 dominated in the fine mode while Ca, Mg, Cl and NO3 were in abundance in coarse fraction. Na was found in both coarse as well as fine mode. Coarse mode SO4 and NO3 have been ascribed to contribution from re-suspension of soil and formation by heterogeneous oxidation on soil derived particles. Preponderance of K in fine mode is attributed to emissions from vegetation and from burning of plant materials. Ca, Mg, Cl and NO3 are largely soil derived and hence dominate in coarse fraction. Equivalent ratios of NH4/(SO4+NO3) were calculated for both fine and coarse aerosols. The coarse mode ratio varied between 0.7 and 1.4 while in fine mode it ranged between 1.4 and 1.9. It shows that aerosol is basic, the basicity of coarse mode is due to higher concentration of soil-derived alkaline components while the basicity in fine mode is due to neutralization of acidity by NH3.  相似文献

As part of the BRACE 2002 May field intensive, the NOAA Twin Otter flew 21 missions over terrestrial, marine, and mixed terrestrial and marine sites in the greater Tampa, Florida, airshed including over Tampa Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. Aerosols were collected with filter packs and their inorganic fractions analyzed post hoc with ion chromatography. Anion mass dominated both the fine- (particle diameters ⩽2.5 μm) and coarse-mode (particle diameters 10.0–2.5 μm) inorganic fractions: SO42−in the fine fraction, 3.7 μg m−3 on average and Cl and NO3 in the coarse fraction, 0.6 μg m−3 on average and 1.4 μg m−3 on average, respectively. Ammonium ion dominated the inorganic fine-mode cation mass, averaging 1.2 μg m−3, presumably in association with SO42. Coarse-mode cation mass was dominated by Na+, but the concentrations of Ca2+ and K+ together often equaled or exceeded the Na+ mass which was, on average, 0.6 μg m−3. Nitrate appeared predominantly in the coarse rather than the fine fraction, as expected, and the fine fraction never contributed >15% of the total NO3 concentration. Nitric acid dominated the NO3 contribution from both aerosol size fractions, and constituted at least 45% of the total NO3 in all samples. Coarse-mode Cl depletion, and hence NO3 replacement, reached 100% within the first 4 h of plume travel from the urban core in some samples, although it was most often less than 100% and slightly below the expected 1:1 ratio with coarse-mode NO3 concentration: the slope of the regression line of NO3 concentration to Cl depletion was 0.9 in the coarse fraction. In addition, terrestrial samples were markedly lower in Cl depletion, and thus in substituted NO3, than were marine and mixed samples: 15–25% depletion in terrestrial samples vs. 50–65% in marine samples with the same air mass age. Thus, we conclude that NO3 and its progenitor compound HNO3 were present in the Tampa airshed in insufficient amounts to titrate fully the slightly alkaline coarse-mode particles there, and to replace completely the Cl from the coarse-mode NaCl.  相似文献

Micrometeorological measurements and ambient air samples, analyzed for concentrations of NH3, HNO3, NH4+, and NO3, were collected at an alpine tundra site on Niwot Ridge, Colorado. The measured concentrations were extremely low and ranged between 5 and 70 ng N m−3. Dry deposition fluxes of these atmospheric species were calculated using the micrometeorological gradient method. The calculated mean flux for NH3 indicates a net deposition to the surface and indicates that NH3 contributed significantly to the total N deposition to the tundra during the August–September measurement period. Our pre-measurement estimate of the compensation point for NH3 in air above the tundra was 100–200 ng N m−3; thus, a net emission of NH3 was expected given the low ambient concentrations of NH3 observed. Based on our results, however, the NH3 compensation point at this alpine tundra site appears to have been at or below about 20 ng N m−3. Large deposition velocities (>2 cm s−1) were determined for nitrate and ammonium and may result from reactions with surface-derived aerosols.  相似文献

The aerosol scattering properties were investigated at two continental sites in northern China in 2004. Aerosol light scattering coefficient (σsp) at 525 nm, PM10, and aerosol mass scattering efficiencies (α) at Dunhuang had a mean value of 165.1±148.8 M m−1, 157.6±270.0 μg m−3, and 2.30±3.41 m2 g−1, respectively, while these values at Dongsheng were, respectively, 180.2±151.9 M m−1, 119.0±112.9 μg m−3, and 1.87±1.41 m2 g−1. There existed a seasonal variability of aerosol scattering properties. In spring, at Dunhuang PM10, σsp, and α were 184.1±211.548 μg m−3, 126.3±89.6 M m−1, and 1.05±0.97 m2 g−1, respectively, and these values at Dongsheng were 146.4±142.1 μg m−3, 183.4±81.7 M m−1, and 1.98±1.52 m2 g−1, respectively. However, in winter at Dunhuang PM10, σsp, and α were 158.1±261.4 μg m−3, 303.3±165.2 M m−1, and 3.17±1.93 m2 g−1, respectively, and these values at Dongsheng were 155.7±170.1 μg m−3, 304.4±158.1 M m−1, and 2.90±1.72 m2 g−1, respectively. σsp and α in winter were higher than that in spring at both the sites, which coincides with the characteristics of dust aerosol and pollution aerosol. Overall, the dominant aerosol types in spring and winter at both sites in northern China are dust aerosol and pollution aerosol, respectively.  相似文献

To better understand the influence of sources and atmospheric processing on aerosol chemical composition, we collected atmospheric particles in Sapporo, northern Japan during spring and early summer 2005 under the air mass transport conditions from Siberia, China and surrounding seas. The aerosols were analyzed for inorganic ions, organic carbon (OC), elemental carbon (EC), water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC), and the major water-soluble organic compound classes (i.e., dicarboxylic acids and sugars). SO42? is the most abundant inorganic constituent (average 44% of the identified inorganic ion mass) followed by NH4+ (21%) and NO3? (13%). Concentrations of OC, EC, and WSOC ranged from 2.0–16, 0.24–2.9, and 0.80–7.9 μg m?3 with a mean of 7.4, 1.0, and 3.1 μg m?3, respectively. High OC/EC ratios (range: 3.6–19, mean: 8.7) were obtained, however WSOC/OC ratios (0.23–0.69, 0.44) do not show any significant diurnal changes. These results suggest that the Sapporo aerosols were already aged, but were not seriously affected by local photochemical processes. Identified water-soluble organic compounds (diacids + sugars) account for <10% of WSOC. Based on some marker species and air mass back trajectory analyses, and using stable carbon isotopic compositions of shorter-chain diacids (i.e., C2–C4) as photochemical aging factor of organic aerosols, the present study suggests that a fraction of WSOC in OC is most likely influenced by aerosol aging, although the OC loading in aerosols may be more influenced by their sources and source regions.  相似文献

During the course of one year (March 2004–March 2005), PM2.5 particulate nitrate concentrations were semi-continuously measured every 10 min at a Madrid suburban site using the Rupprecht and Patashnick Series 8400N Ambient Particulate Nitrate Monitor (8400N). Gaseous pollutants (NO, NO2, O3, HCHO, HNO2) were simultaneously measured with a DOAS spectrometer (OPSIS AR-500) and complementary meteorological information was obtained by a permanent tower. The particulate nitrate concentrations ranged from the instrumental detection limit of around 0.2 μg m−3, up to a maximum of about 25 μg m−3. The minimum monthly average was reached during August (0.32 μg m−3) and the maximum during November (3.0 μg m−3). Due to the semi-volatile nature of ammonium nitrate, peaks were hardly present during summer air pollution episodes. A typical pattern during days with low dispersive conditions was characterized by a steep rise of particulate nitrate in the morning, reaching maximum values between 9 and 14 UTC, followed by a decrease during the evening. On some occasions a light increase was observed at nighttime. During spring episodes, brief diurnal nitrate peaks were recorded, while during the autumn and winter episodes, later and broader nitrate peaks were registered. Analysis of particulate nitrate and related gaseous species indicated the photo-chemical origin of the morning maxima, delayed with respect to NO and closely associated with secondary NO2 maximum values. The reverse evolution of nitrate and nitrous acid was observed after sunrise, suggesting a major contribution from HNO2 photolysis to OH formation at this time of the day, which would rapidly produce nitrate in both gaseous and particulate phase. Some nocturnal nitrate maxima appeared under high humidity conditions, and a discussion about their origin involving different possible mechanisms is presented, i.e. the possibility that these nocturnal maximum values could be related to the heterogeneous formation of nitrous and nitric acid by the hydrolysis of NO2 on wet aerosols.  相似文献

Twelve hours integrated fine particles (PM2.5) and 24-h average size-segregated particles were collected to investigate the chemical characteristics and to determine the size distribution of ionic species during October–December 1999 in three cities of different urban scale; Chongju, Kwangju, and Seoul, Korea. Concentrations of 5-min PM2.5 black carbon (BC) and hourly criteria air pollutants (PM10, CO, NOx, SO2, and O3) were also measured using the Aethalometer and ambient air monitoring system, respectively.Highest PM2.5 mass concentrations at Chongju, Kwangju, and Seoul sites were 63.0, 77.9, and 143.7 μg m−3, respectively. For the time period when highest PM2.5 mass occurred, BC level out of PM2.5 chemical species was highest at both Chongju and Kwangju, and highest NO3 (23.6 μg m−3) followed by BC (23.1 μg m−3) were observed at Seoul site, indicating that highest PM2.5 pollution is closely associated with the traffic emissions. Strong relationships of Fe with BC and Zn at both Kwangju and Seoul sites support that the Fe and Zn measured there are originated partly from same source as BC, i.e. diesel traffics. However, it is suggested that the Fe measured at Chongju is most likely derived from dispersion of soil dust. The size distributions of SO42−, NO3, and NH4+ ionic species indicated similar unimodal distributions at all sampling sites. However, different unimodal patterns in the accumulation mode size range with a peak in the smaller size (0.28–0.53 μm, condensation mode) in both Kwangju and Seoul, and in the relatively larger size (0.53–1.0 μm, droplet mode) in Chongju, were found. The potassium ion under the study sites dominates in the fine mode, and its size distribution showed unimodal character with a maximum in the size range 0.56–1.0 μm.  相似文献

Ammonia-nitrogen flux (NH3-N=(14/17)NH3) was determined from six anaerobic swine waste storage and treatment lagoons (primary, secondary, and tertiary) using the dynamic chamber system. Measurements occurred during the fall of 1998 through the early spring of 1999, and each lagoon was examined for approximately one week. Analysis of flux variation was made with respect to lagoon surface water temperature (∼15 cm below the surface), lagoon water pH, total aqueous phase NHx(=NH3+NH4+) concentration, and total Kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN). Average lagoon temperatures (across all six lagoons) ranged from approximately 10.3 to 23.3°C. The pH ranged in value from 6.8 to 8.1. Aqueous NHx concentration ranged from 37 to 909 mg N l−1, and TKN varied from 87 to 950 mg N l−1. Fluxes were the largest at the primary lagoon in Kenansville, NC (March 1999) with an average value of 120.3 μg N m−2 min−1, and smallest at the tertiary lagoon in Rocky Mount, NC (November 1998) at 40.7 μg N m−2 min−1. Emission rates were found to be correlated with both surface lagoon water temperature and aqueous NHx concentration. The NH3-N flux may be modeled as ln(NH3-N flux)=1.0788+0.0406TL+0.0015([NHx]) (R2=0.74), where NH3-N flux is the ammonia flux from the lagoon surface in μg N m−2 min−1, TL is the lagoon surface water temperature in °C, and [NHx] is the total ammonia-nitrogen concentration in mg N l−1.  相似文献

The use of fireworks creates an unusual and distinctive anthropogenic atmospheric pollution event. We report on aerosol samples collected during Las Fallas in Valencia, a 6-day celebration famous for its firework displays, and add comparative data on firework- and bonfire-contaminated atmospheric aerosol samples collected from elsewhere in Spain (Barcelona, L’Alcora, and Borriana) and during the Guy Fawkes celebrations in London. Specific high-profile official firework events during Las Fallas included the afternoon Mascletà and the nightly aerial displays (especially in the climactic final 2 days of the fiesta) and were accompanied by pollution spikes in suspended particles, NO, SO2, and the creation and dispersal of an aerosol cloud enriched in a range of metallic elements. Notable metal aerosol concentration increases recorded during Las Fallas were potassium (from 500 to 5900 ng m−3), aluminium (as Al2O3 from around 600 to 2200 ng m−3), titanium (from 200 to 700 ng m−3), magnesium (from 100 to 500 ng m−3), lead (from 17 to 379 ng m−3), barium (from 39 to 322 ng m−3), strontium (from 3 to 112 ng m−3), copper (from 12 to 71 ng m−3), and antimony (from 1 to 52 ng m−3). Firework-contaminated aerosols of similarly metalliferous composition were also identified at the other monitoring sites, although different sites show variations attributable to other sources such as bonfires and local industry. Unusual levels of the trace elements Ba, Sr and (to a lesser extent) Cu, always in proportions with Ba dominant, along with strongly enhanced K, Pb, and Sb, are identified as being particularly characteristic of firework aerosols. Although firework-related recreational pollution episodes are transient in nature, they are highly concentrated, contribute significantly to total annual metal emissions, and are on average fine enough to be easily inhaled and a health risk to susceptible individuals.  相似文献

The concentrations of PM2.5−10, PM2.5 and associated water-soluble inorganic species (WSIS) were determined in a coastal site of the metropolitan region of Rio de Janeiro, Southeastern Brazil, from October 1998 to September 1999 (n=50). Samples were dissolved in water and analyzed for major inorganic ions. The mean (± standard deviation; median) concentrations of PM2.5−10 and PM2.5 were, respectively, 26 (± 16; 21) μg m−3 and 17 (± 13; 14) μg m−3. Their mean concentrations were 1.7–1.8 times higher in dry season (May–October) than in rainy season (November–April). The WSIS comprised, respectively, 34% and 28% of the PM2.5−10 and PM2.5 masses. Chloride, Na+ and Mg2+ were the predominant ions in PM2.5−10, indicating a significant influence of sea-salt aerosols. In PM2.5, SO42− (∼97% nss-SO42−) and NH4+ were the most abundant ions and their equivalent concentration ratio (SO42−/NH4+ ∼1.0) suggests that they were present as (NH4)2SO4 particles. The mean concentration of (NH4)2SO4 was 3.4 μg m−3. The mean equivalent PM2.5 NO3 concentration was eight times smaller than those of SO42− and NH4+. The PM2.5 NO3 concentration in dry season was three times higher than in rainy season, probably due to reaction of NaCl (sea salt) with HNO3 as a result of higher levels of NOy during the dry season and/or reduced volatilization of NH4NO3 due to lower wintertime temperature. Chloride depletion was observed in both size ranges, although more pronouncely in PM2.5.  相似文献

Size-resolved fog drop chemical composition measurements were obtained during a radiation fog campaign near Davis, California in December 1998/January 1999 (reported in Reilly et al., Atmos. Environ. 35(33) (2001) 5717; Moore et al., Atmos. Environ. this issue). Here we explore how knowledge of this size-dependent drop composition—particularly from the newly developed Colorado State University 5-Stage cloud water collector—helps to explain additional observations in the fog environment. Size-resolved aerosol measurements before and after fog events indicate relative depletion of large (>2 μm in diameter) particles during fog accompanied by a relative increase in smaller aerosol particle concentrations. Fog equivalent air concentrations suggest that entrainment of additional particles and in-fog sedimentation contributed to observed changes in the aerosol size distribution. Calculated deposition velocities indicate that sedimentation was an important atmospheric removal mechanism for some species. For example, nitrite typically has a larger net deposition velocity than water and its mass is found preferentially in the largest drops most likely to sediment rapidly. Gas–liquid equilibria in fog for NO3/HNO3, NH4+/NH3, and NO2/HONO were examined. While these systems appear to be close to equilibrium or relative equilibrium during many time periods, divergences are observed, particularly for low liquid water content (<0.1 g m−3) fogs and in different drop sizes. Knowledge of the drop size-dependent composition provided additional data useful to the interpretation of these deviations. The results suggest that data from multi-stage cloud water collectors are useful to understanding fog processes as many depend upon drop size.  相似文献
