Alarm responses to the extracts of conspecifics and hetero-specifics were measured for the Caribbean sea urchins Echinometra viridis, E. lucunter, Lytechinus variegatus, L. williamsi, Tripneustes ventricosus, Diadema antillarum, and Eucidaris tribuloides collected along the Caribbean coast (9°3314N; 78°5523W) during October 1984 and July–December 1985. Responses to seawater and extracts of the gnathostomate echinoid Clypeaster sybdepressus were used as controls. The intensity of the response resulting from exposure to sea-urchin extracts was measured by: (1) the percentage of individuals that responded by moving away from the extract and/or towards shelter, and (2) the mean distance moved. Echinometra viridis, E. lucunter, and L. williamsi responded to sea-urchin extracts by moving towards nearby shelter sites. The distance that individuals of each species moved in the first minute following exposure to conspecific extracts was correlated with the distance that species moved from shelter while foraging. L. variegatus and D. antillarum, living in microhabitats not providing protection from predators, responded to extracts of conspecifics and heterospecifics by moving away from the direction of the extract. Eucidaris tribuloides did not exhibit alarm responses to the extracts of con- or hetero-specifics. E. tribuloides secures itself with its stout spines into protected sites within corals. Similarly, L. variegatus living in long, dense seagrass that provided protection from detection by predators, and D. antillarum occupying crevices, showed no alarm responses to extracts of conspecifics. Presumably, in these situations, sea urchins cannot increase their defenses against predation by moving away from an injured neighbor. T. ventricosus showed a weak response to extracts of L. variegatus, but no response to extracts of other species including conspecifics. The reasons for this lack of an alarm response are unclear. For the five species that demonstrated an alarm response to sea-urchin extracts, the intensity of the response varied depending on the type of extract used. L. variegatus, L. williamsi, and D. antillarum responded most strongly to extracts from conspecifics, while Echinometra viridis and E. lucunter responded strongly to extracts from both conspecifics and congeners. The weakest responses were shown to the extracts of T. ventricosus and Eucidaris tribuloides. Habitat overlap, overlap in predators, and phylogenetic relationships did not consistently explain patterns of alarm responses to the extracts of heterospecific sea urchins.  相似文献

In 1983, Diadema antillarum suffered mass mortality throughout the Caribbean Sea and the western Atlantic Ocean. I followed the dynamics of populations at the San Blas Islands, Panamá from April 1983 to November 1987. Density measurements indicate that populations of D. antillarum have not recovered from the die-offs that killed nearly 97% of the individuals. There was recruitment to the 1 to 1.5 cm class immediately after the mass mortality, but there has been little additional influx of juveniles since then. The low number of observable juveniles could not be attributed to elevated rates of predation on very small individuals. Rates of recruitment did not differ between reefs with artificially increased densities of D. antillarum and reefs kept free of sea urchins; thus, the lack of recruitment did not arise from absence of adults that could provide settlement cues to the larvae or protection to newly settled juveniles. Other species of sea urchins did not show a clear pattern of increase after the demise of D. antillarum. Therefore, interspecific competition directed towards D. antillarum juveniles did not increase after the mass mortality. Two reefs where Echinometra viridis, Eucidaris tribuloides and Lytechinus williamsi, were removed showed no significant differences in recruitment of D. antillarum relative to two reefs where these species were allowed to remain at their natural densities. Resident D. antillarum after the mass mortality produced gametes with the same per capita intensity and lunar synchrony as before the mass mortality. However, it is possible that the probability of fertilization of their gametes decreased because of low population density. The most likely explanation for lack of recruitment is that the reduced numbers of reproducing adults at Panamá and upstream locations resulted in levels of larval supply that were inadequate to sustain recruitment on Panamanian reefs.  相似文献

The protease activity of crude extracts from various organs of the digestive tract of two groups of milkfish was determined. One group (Sample A) derived their food from ponds that had predominantly unicellular algae while the other group (Sample B) were reared on ponds dominated by the filamentous green algae Chaetomorpha brachygona. In general, crude extracts from Sample A fish had a higher protease activity than Sample B fish. In both samples, high protease activity was observed in crude extracts from the pyloric caeca, intestines and pancreas. Chymotryptic activity was observed in crude extracts of pancreas, intestines and pyloric caeca of both fish samples. Tryptic activity was, however, observed only in fish grown on unicellular algae. Experimental evidence suggests that a powerful trypsin inhibitor in Chaetomorpha brachygona may account for the absence of tryptic activity in all crude extracts of Sample B fish. Phagostimulatory properties of amino acids, carbohydrates, vitamins, fatty acids, and cholesterol were assessed for sea hares (Aplysia kurodai and A. dactylomela). A. kurodai were collected at Shirahama, Japan, during March-May 1979, and A. dactylomela were collected at Barbados, West Indies, during August-November 1978. Greatest phagostimulatory responses were elicited by starch, glutamic and aspartic acids, maltose, oleic acid, and certain combinations of vitamins. Combinations of nutrients resulted in negative synergistic or masking effects of the phagostimulatory properties of the component nutrients. The widespread sensitivity and responsiveness to glutamic and aspartic acids by marine invertebrates, and especially by sea hares, are discussed from the standpoint of possible use by marine herbivores as feeding cues.  相似文献

Echinoids, notably Lytechinus variegatus and Tripneustes ventricosus, and other reef flat animals (brachyuran crabs, chitons and ophiuroids) were observed to suffer heavy mortality in Puerto Rico during extreme, midday low water stands which occur in the spring and summer seasons. Death often resulted from prolonged exposure to intense heating (up to 40°C) in pools and slowly circulating bodies of water over periods of clear and calm weather; desiccation caused death in echinoids which subsequently floated away from the reef with the rising tide. The tolerance limits to exsiccation and high thermal stress were determined and found to lie within the lethal range realized on the reef. Unprotected Tripneustes may also be killed from exposure to the shorter radiations of sunlight. Severe mortalities were observed in populations of Lytechinus (64%) and Tripneustes (86%) located at a shallow depth toward the lee side of the reef. Less affected were the echinoids Echinometra lucunter, Diadema antillarum and Brissus unicolor. Similar, tide-related echinoid kills are expected to occur at other localities in the Caribbean region.  相似文献

Physiological and biochemical properties of a marine agarolytic association of the bacterium Cytophaga diffluens and the infusorium Uronema marinum were investigated. The agarase activity of the association was shown to be higher than that of the pure bacterial culture at all growth stages under identical conditions. Maximum agarase activity of the association, and of the pure bacterial culture, was observed in a medium containing a small amount of organic nitrogen (0.1% yeast extract). Ethyl acetate, chloroform, butanol, and methanol extracts from the aerial part of Peganum harmala were tested for antibacterial, antioxidant, and antiviral activities. The antibacterial activity was evaluated by the determination of minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) using the solid medium technique. Oxacillin, amoxicillin, ticarcillin, cefotaxim, and amphotericin were used as control agents. The antiviral activity was evaluated against human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) strain AD-169 (ATCC Ref. VR 538) and Coxsackie B virus type 3 (CoxB-3) using a cytopathic effect (CPE) reduction assay. The antioxidant activity was evaluated using two tests: 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free-radical scavenging and ammonium thiocyanate methods. Among tested extracts; the chloroform extract displayed a higher antibacterial activity against Gram-positive than Gram-negative bacteria. The butanol extract demonstrated the highest antioxidant activity. The methanol extract showed significant antiviral activity against CoxB-3 virus. The chloroform extract may be an important source of bactericidal compounds against Gram-positive bacteria.  相似文献

Grazing effects on nitrogen fixation in coral reef algal turfs   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
This study addressed whether grazing by the sea urchin Diadema antillarum influenced rates of nitrogen fixation by algal turf communities on Caribbean coral reefs. Because the turfs were nitrogen-limited, we also assessed whether newly-fixed nitrogen was important for supporting net primary productivity by the turfs. We measured acetylene reduction in turfs grown in treatments excluding or including D. antillarum in the presence of other herbivores at 3 m water depth on Tague Bay forereef, St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands. These were the first measurements of acetylene reduction on coral reefs under quasi-natural conditions of high water-flow and photosynthetic oxygen generation. Rates of acetylene reduction under these conditions were as high as any measured previously in coral reef communities (mean 7.6 nmol C2H4 cm−2 h−1). Algal turfs grazed by D. antillarum and other herbivores had chlorophyll-specific acetylene reduction rates up to three times higher than when D. antillarum was excluded. High rates of nitrogen fixation by the turfs were sufficient to meet <2% of the nitrogen required to support net chlorophyll-specific primary productivity over 24 h. Grazer-mediated increases in nitrogen fixation do not appear responsible for a parallel enhancement of net primary productivity. Bioassays were conducted to test crude extracts of nine temperate-water ascidians for bioactivity against a range of marine organisms. The extracts generally produced moderate to weak effects, with the exception of those from the ascidian Clavelina lepadiformis, which consistently produced high mortalities against invertebrates. Some of these were then tested in simple palatability assays for feeding-deterrent effects. In general, no strong effects were detected for assays with shore crabs (Carcinus maenas) and fishes (the goby Pomatoschistus minutus and the grey mullet Chelon labrosus). Feeding-deterrent effects were observed with Carcinus maenas for the extracts of Aplidium proliferum, Botryllus schlosseri and Dendrodoa grossularia. It is postulated that these ascidians are unpalatable, but no toxic effects are evident.  相似文献

Reproduction of Diadema aff. antillarum was examined between 2002 and 2005 at subtidal rocky bottoms around the Canary Islands. Two contrasting habitats (urchin barrens and grazing fronts) characterized by different levels of food availability were chosen, and factors thought to influence reproductive periodicity were monitored, including temperature, photoperiod, phytoplankton abundance and benthic food availability. Histological analyses showed that D. aff. antillarum had an annual reproductive cycle that was relatively synchronous across the studied sites and habitats. Photoperiod was the most significant factor that correlated with gonad periodicity; benthic food availability of 2 month lag was also correlated. However, some differences were detected between males and females in the timing of the onset of gametogenesis. Spawning was synchronized between both sexes from June to August. Results suggest that the optimum time of year to harvest urchin gonads would be between May and June when gonads were maximal in size but not full of gametes. This species may not provide optimal conditions for an industrial scale fishery, as sea urchins occurring in high density had small gonads and those producing larger volume or more marketable gonad tissue occurred in low densities where harvesting costs would exceed profit.  相似文献

In 1983/1984,Diadema antillarum suffered mass mortalities throughout its West Atlantic range. Its populations were reduced by 95% and subsequently have failed to recover. These die-offs led to sustained increases in the abundance of soft algae, including types eaten by herbivorous reef fishes. I monitored adult populations of three herbivorous surgeonfishes (Acanthurus coeruleus, A. chirurugus andA. bahianus) between 1978 and 1990, and the recruitment of their pelagic juveniles between 1979 and 1989, on six patch reefs in Panamá. Adult populations ofA. coeruleus andA. chirurgus, which largely restrict their feeding to reef substrata, increased by averages of 250 and 160%, respectively, after the die-off ofD. antillarum in 1983. No increases occurred in the adult populations ofA. bahianus, which often feeds in off-reef habitats unaffected byD. antillarum. Average annual levels of juvenile recruitment of all three surgeonfishes did not differ before and after the die-off. These results support the hypothesis that adult populations of two herbivorous fishes that are strongly reliant on reef algae for food previously were limited by competition withD. antillarum.  相似文献

Juvenile shrimp, Crangon crangon L., were maintained in water-soluble crude oil fractions at 10°, 15° and 20°C. During chronic exposure to oil fractions, a reduction in respiration and growth rate occurred which was related to strength of the extract. Mortality increased with strength of oil fraction and was highest at 20°C. Calculation of carbon budgets indicated that the extract reduced net carbon turnover at each temperature. Physiological consequences resulting from exposure to the oil fractions are discussed.  相似文献

Settlement of mussels is commonly associated with macroalgae. The effects of 19 macroalgal species on the settlement and metamorphosis of pediveliger larvae of the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis were investigated in the laboratory. Settlement and metamorphosis inducing activities of macroalgae Chlorodesmis fastigiata and Ceramium tenerrimum collected each month during the period between January 2005 and April 2006 were also investigated. Furthermore, C. fastigiata and C. tenerrimum were subjected to various treatments to investigate the roles of bacteria and diatoms on the algal surface in the induction of larval settlement and metamorphosis of M. galloprovincialis and the characteristics of the cues in these two macroalgae. Pediveliger larvae of M. galloprovincialis settled and metamorphosed in high percentages on Cladophora sp., Chlorodesmis fastigiata, Centroceras clavulatum, and Ceramium tenerrimum, all of which were filamentous in morphology. Macroalgae that were cylindrical, phylloid, flabellate, palmate and pinnate all showed low (<8%) percentages of post-larvae but four other filamentous macroalgae also had low mussel larval settlement, suggesting that chemical factors may also be involved. Seasonal variation had no effect on inductive activities of C. fastigiata and C. tenerrimum. Treatment of C. fastigiata and C. tenerrimum with formalin, ethanol and heat resulted in the significant decrease or loss of their inductive activities. Survival of algal cells within treated macroalgae also decreased significantly. Treatment of the two macroalgae with antibiotics and GeO2 reduced the numbers of bacteria and diatoms on their surface but did not affect their inductive activities, indicating that the cue was produced by macroalgae and not by coexisting bacteria and diatoms. However, conditioned water and crude extracts of these two macroalgae did not induce larval settlement and metamorphosis. Thus, larvae of M. galloprovincialis settled and metamorphosed on specific filamentous macroalgae. The chemical cues produced by C. fastigiata and C. tenerrimum were susceptible to ethanol and heat treatments and were not recovered in the conditioned water nor in the extracts. The finding that inactive C. tenerrimum can be produced from culturing its apical segments provides a new tool to elucidate the chemical cue(s) from macroalgae through manipulation of their culture conditions.  相似文献

An on-going, Caribbean-wide epizootic affecting sea fan corals (Gorgonia spp.) is caused by the fungus Aspergillus sydowii (Thom et Church). We examined the role of crude extracts in resistance of two species of sea fans, Gorgonia ventalina (L.) and G. flabellum (L.), against A. sydowii and a bacterial pathogen of fish, Listonella anguillarum (MacDonell et Colwell). Sea fans were collected in January 1997 from San Salvador, Bahamas, and in June 1997 and January 1998 from Alligator Reef, Florida Keys, USA. Crude extracts from both species were tested to determine concentrations inhibiting germination of A. sydowii spores. Crude extracts from both species inhibited spore germination at concentrations as low as 1.5 mg ml−1; most samples were active at 5 to 10 mg ml−1. These concentrations are within the range estimated in living tissue and were higher in healthy colonies suggesting their role in mediating disease susceptibility. We also detected within-colony gradients in antifungal activity, which varied with the disease state of the colony. In healthy sea fans, resistance was highest at colony edges and lowest in medial and central regions of the colony. Among sea fans with lesions in the colony center, resistance in tissue from proximal and medial regions was as high as tissue from the colony edge (i.e. distal region). The increase in antifungal activity suggests an inducible response by the coral host to the fungal pathogen. This response is most evident among sea fans with lesions in the colony center and not among colonies with lesions at the edge. Antibacterial activity of crude extracts against L. anguillarum was highest at the colony edge but did not vary with disease state or tissue location. Two wetland plant species, Phragmites australis and Oryza sativa, were grown in a glasshouse under hydroponics conditions. Enzyme extracts from different parts of the plants were used to determine the transformation rate of o,p-DDT, p,p-DDT and PCBs. The organic pollutants were directly spiked into the enzyme extracts, and samples were collected every 30 min and analyzed with a GC-ECD. Root extracts of P. australis readily degraded and transformed DDT and some PCB congeners with a low degree of chlorination. In contrast, crude extracts of O. sativa showed no appreciable degradation or transformation of DDT or PCBs. Inhibition studies indicated that the degradation and transformation of both DDT and PCBs by P. australis enzymes were partly mediated by peroxidase and the plant P-450 system. PCBs with a high degree of chlorination were highly resistant to transformation or degradation by plant enzymes. Both wetland plant species accumulated substantial quantities of the persistent organic chemicals but had different degradation capacities. The enzyme systems in P. australis were much more effective that those in rice in the degradation and transformation of the organic pollutants.  相似文献

Studies investigating disease resistance in marine plants have indicated that secondary metabolites may have important defensive functions against harmful marine microorganisms. The goal of this study was to systematically screen extracts from marine plants for antimicrobial effects against marine pathogens and saprophytes. Lipophilic and hydrophilic extracts from species of 49 marine algae and 3 seagrasses collected in the tropical Atlantic were screened for antimicrobial activity against five ecologically relevant marine microorganisms from three separate kingdoms. These assay microbes consisted of the pathogenic fungus Lindra thalassiae, the saprophytic fungus Dendryphiella salina, the saprophytic stramenopiles, Halophytophthora spinosa and Schizochytrium aggregatum, and the pathogenic bacterium Pseudoaltermonas bacteriolytica. Overall, 90% of all species surveyed yielded extracts that were active against one or more, and 77% yielded extracts that were active against two or more assay microorganisms. Broad-spectrum activity against three or four assay microorganisms was observed in the extracts from 48 and 27% of all species, respectively. The green algae Halimeda copiosa and Penicillus capitatus (Chlorophyta) were the only species to yield extracts active against all assay microorganisms. Among all assay microorganisms, both fungi were the most resistant to the extracts tested, with less than 21% of all extracts inhibiting the growth of either L. thalassiae or D. salina. In contrast, over half of all lipophylic extracts were active against the stramenopiles H. spinosa and S. aggregatum, and the bacterium P. bacteriolytica. Growth sensitivity to hydrophilic extracts varied considerably between individual assay microorganisms. While 48% of all hydrophilic extracts were active against H. spinosa, 27% were active against P. bacteriolytica, and only 14% were active against S. aggregatum. Overall, more lipophilic extracts inhibited microbial growth than hydrophilic extracts. The variability observed in the antimicrobial effects of individual extracts against each assay microorganism reflects the importance of choosing appropriate test microbes in assays from which ecologically relevant information is sought. Results from this survey demonstrate that antimicrobial activities are prevalent among extracts from marine algae and seagrasses, suggesting that antimicrobial chemical defenses are widespread among marine plants.  相似文献

Developmental stages of the medusa Eutima commensalis sp. nov. were obtained from plankton collections made at 2 fixed stations, one at Fareway Buoy and the other at Aroor in the Cochin backwater system. Six stages were arbitrarily assigned and described. The hydroid and the medusa of this form were found to occur in these waters throughout the year, except during the monsoon months from June to September. The hydroid is endocommensalic on wood-boring molluscs such as Nausitora hedleyi, Teredo furcifera and Martesia striata.  相似文献

We investigated mycosporine amino acid (MAA) involvement as protective sunscreens in spawn of the sea hare Aplysia dactylomela to determine if adult diet and ultraviolet (UV) exposure affected the UV sensitivity of developing embryos. Adults were fed a red alga rich in MAAs (Acanthophora spicifera) or a green alga poor in MAAs (Ulva lactuca). Adults on each diet were exposed for 2 wk to ambient solar irradiance with two types of acrylic filters; one allowed exposure to wavelengths >275 nm (designated UV) and one to wavelengths only >410 nm (designated NOUV). Spawn from each adult group was likewise treated with UV or NOUV and monitored during development for differences in mortality and metabolic rate (measured as oxygen consumption: O2). Also recorded were number of eggs or embryos per capsule, times to hatching, hatching success, size at hatching, and O2 of adults. Spawn from adults eating red algae was almost twice as rich in MAAs as spawn from adults eating green algae, suggesting that MAA content is diet-related. Although overall quantities of MAAs in the spawn reflected MAA contents of the adult diet, specific MAAs were differentially sequestered in the spawn. Thus, porphyra-334, found in high concentration in Aplysia dactylomela's preferred red algal food, was present in only low concentration in the spawn. Conversely, mycosporine-glycine, in low concentration in red algal food, was the most abundant MAA in the spawn. UV treatment of adults had no effect on quantities of MAAs in the spawn. Adults exposed to UV had significantly higher O2s and spawned twice as often. The UV-treated adults produced spawn with significantly higher O2s and their embryos developed to hatching sooner. The only significant effect of UV exposure of the spawn was to reduce the percentage of veligers hatching from 71 to 50%. Biochemical responses and DNA damage of earthworm (Eisenia fetida) exposed to various concentrations of fomesafen (0, 10, 100, and 500 μg kg?1) for 3, 7, 14, 21, and 28 days were investigated in vivo. Glutathione S-transferase (GST) activity was significantly stimulated upon treatment with 500 μg kg?1 fomesafen for 21 days, while the cellulase activity was markedly inhibited after 14 days of treatment. On day 28, the activities of GST and cellulase had recovered to the level similar to that of controls. Low or mild DNA damage in earthworm was induced within 14 days of exposure, and the damage was reduced or disappeared with the extension of exposure.  相似文献
