Enantiomeric ratios (ERs) and enantiomeric fractions (EFs) of a number of chiral organochlorine pesticides and PCB atropisomers were measured by chiral gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) in five standard (SRM) and certified (CRM) reference materials: SRM 1588a (organics in cod liver oil), SRM 1945 (organics in whale blubber), Marine Mammal Quality Assurance Exercise Control Material IV (NIST IV, organics in whale blubber), CRM trout, and CRM EC-5 (sediment). Target analytes were cis- and trans-chlordane, heptachlor exo-epoxide, oxychlordane, U82, MC5, MC6, MC7, o,p-DDT, and PCB congeners 91, 95, 136, 149, 174, 176, and 183. Measured ERs and EFs are in close agreement with the few literature values reported for some of these analytes in SRMs and CRMs. Chiral PCB ERs and EFs measured by one-dimensional chiral GC/MS were similar to values measured using multidimensional chiral GC/MS. Non-racemic chiral compositions are in agreement with known uptake and biotransformation in the respective environmental matrices. These values should aid in the quality assurance/quality control methodologies for chiral environmental chemistry using standardized reference materials.  相似文献

The content of 30 polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and the enantiomeric fractions of 10 chiral PCBs were determined in 17 infertile eggs from three different predatory bird species collected in Do?ana National Park (DNP, Spain) in the period 1999-2000. The highest PCB concentration was found in eggs from red kites (0.52-110 microg/g on a fresh weight basis, f.w.) followed by buzzard (0.08-13 microg/g f.w.) and booted eagle (0.10-1.5 microg/g f.w.). Seventy-five percent of the red kite eggs had PCB levels above 4.7 microg/g f.w., which is associated in the literature with reproductive failure. This could be related to the fact that red kite populations have decreased by more than 50% in the last five years in DNP. PCBs # 138, 153, and 180 were the most abundant in all cases. This is the first time that atropisomers of 10 chiral PCBs (PCBs # 45, 84, 91, 95, 132, 135, 136, 149, 174, and 176) in predatory bird eggs have been performed. The enantiomeric fractions (EFs) for most PCBs investigated were non-racemic (EF not = 0.5), ranging from 0.05 to 0.95. The results suggested that predatory birds, mainly red kite species, are highly polluted by PCBs, and PCBs # 95, 132, 135, 136, and 174 strongly deviate from the racemic-mixture values.  相似文献

Computerized methodologies for the quantification of total PCBs, PCB in Aroclor mixtures and individual PCB congeners in environmental samples are presented. The method for total PCBs is based on a multiple-linear regression analysis using data from capillary gas chromatography of Arocolor standards. PCB congeners were identified and their weight percentages determined in Aroclor mixtures by GC/MS. PCB congeners and total PCBs were accurately quantified in predetermined test data and environmental samples.  相似文献

Emission factors (EFs) of PM2.5, CO, elemental carbon (EC), particulate organic carbon (OC), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and methoxyphenols (MPs) from post-harvest burning of wheat and Kentucky bluegrass (KBG) stubble were evaluated in a series of field burns. Integrated smoke samples were collected at ground level, upwind and downwind of the fires, and EFs were determined with the carbon balance method (validated during previous chamber experiments). These EFs were compared against EFs evaluated from previously conducted chamber burns, to determine how well the latter represent field scenarios. In general, when combustion efficiency (CE) differences were taken into account, a reasonable degree of agreement was observed between emission factors measured in the field and in the chamber, except for EC and solid+vapor phase PAHs, both from wheat burns. EC and PAHs from wheat burns were seen in higher amounts in the chamber, although the PAH data are in agreement at CEs>90%. EC overestimates might be due to a misassigned EC–OC split in the heavily loaded quartz filters from chamber burns. Poor EC and OC EF–CE correlations in KBG chamber data make the comparison with field data difficult. The particulate organic matter/OC ratios (2.1±1.3 for wheat and 1.9 for KBG) were higher than those observed during chamber experiments (1.5 for both wheat and KBG). Overestimates of EC in the chamber and possibly the condensation of oxygenated species in the field may be responsible for this difference. Though CO and CH4 EFs evaluated from ground-based samples differed from those collected on board a light aircraft, EF–CE relationships were similar. This underscores the importance of determining both the CEs and EFs simultaneously.  相似文献

In this article, the production and validation of a new certified reference material "PCBs in animal fat" for the control of the maximum level of 200 ng/g setup by the European Communities for veterinary products from Belgium is described. Three materials are established: a blank, one material with about 100 ng/g and one with about 200 ng/g (sum of seven PCBs). Data on the production and certification are given. Additionally, this material was used as an unknown test material in the quality assurance program of the Belgium meat monitoring system (before the certification of the material). While the certification was performed with an uncertainty of less than 10%, the round robin exhibited larger deviations. However, these deviations were less than 20% for most of the 30 participating laboratories. Only two had significantly higher deviations.  相似文献

While quality control has been defined and implemented for ambient criteria pollutant monitoring, such as for SO2, O3 and total suspended particulates, most of the noncriteria air pollutants currently being measured have not been subject to similar levels of data assurance.. The New Jersey Project on Airborne Toxic Elements and Organic Substances (ATEOS) included the measurement of nearly 50 gaseous and particulate phase noncriteria pollutants, within the structure of a rigorous quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) program. The following report details the QA/QC results for the particulate and vapor phase pollutants measured during the ATEOS project. Consideration is given to a number of basic differences between measuring inorganic and organic pollutants including method detection limits, number of valid samples, and precision and accuracy of the overall methods. Particular emphasis is placed on how the QA/QC data place limits on statistical analyses of noncriteria air pollutant data sets.  相似文献

In 2005 and 2006, the levels of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and metals (As, Be, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, Sn, Tl and V) were measured in air samples collected in an industrial area of Sant Adrià del Besòs (Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain) where a municipal solid waste incinerator (MSWI) is placed, and in a background/control area. In general terms, concentrations of all environmental pollutants were higher at the industrial site. No significant seasonal/temporal variations were observed in any of the areas. No Pearson correlation was found between the PCDD/F concentrations and the environmental conditions of the two sampling periods considered. Principal component analyses (PCA) were performed to get information on the relationship among samples, pollutants, and emission sources. The results indicate that the MSWI of S. Adrià de Besòs is not a significant emission source of the above compounds for the area under its direct influence. Moreover, a notable difference in the PCDD/F congener profiles was found between ambient air and stack gas emissions, indicating that the current levels of PCDD/Fs are more related to other potential emissions sources rather than to those from the MSWI.  相似文献

A cod liver oil reference material, Standard Reference Material (SRM) 1588, which was issued by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in 1989, has certified concentrations for five polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) congeners and ten chlorinated pesticides. Recently, this SRM has been extensively characterized by additional analyses at NIST and by analyses at the Canadian Wildlife Service (CWS) where the SRM was used as a control sample during routine analyses of wildlife tissue specimens. In this paper the results from NIST and CWS are compared and the concentrations for over 40 PCB congeners and 20 chlorinated hydrocarbons are reported.  相似文献

Dry deposition samples were collected using a smooth surrogate surface at the Kaynaklar Campus of the Dokuz Eylul University in Izmir, Turkey. Concurrently ambient aerosol samples were collected. All samples were analyzed for anthropogenic and crustal trace elements. The average trace element concentrations and fluxes measured in this study were generally higher than those reported previously for urban and rural areas. The contribution of local terrestrial and anthropogenic sources were also investigated using enrichment factors (EFs) calculated relative to the local soil. Relatively lower EFs for ambient samples and high ambient concentrations indicated that the local soil was polluted and contributed significantly to ambient trace element concentrations. Deposition samples had higher EFs than the air samples. The EF sequences of trace elements were also different for deposition and ambient samples, probably due to the fact they have different mass median diameters and deposition velocities. The overall dry deposition velocities for trace elements calculated by dividing the particulate fluxes measured with the surrogate surfaces by ambient concentrations ranged from 0.6 (Al) to 6.2 cm s−1 (Fe). The agreement between the experimental dry deposition velocities determined in this study and the previously reported ones using similar techniques for trace elements was good.  相似文献

Trace element dry deposition fluxes were measured using a smooth, greased, knife-edge surrogate surface (KSS) holding greased Mylar strips in Bursa, Turkey. Sampling program was conducted between October 2002 and June 2003 and 46 dry deposition samples were collected. The average fluxes of crustal metals (Mg, Ca, and Fe) were one to four orders of magnitude higher than the fluxes of anthropogenic metals. Trace element fluxes ranged from 3 (Cd) to 24,230 (Ca) microg m(-2) d(-1). The average trace element dry deposition fluxes measured in this study were similar to those measured in other urban areas. In addition, ambient air samples were also collected simultaneously with flux samples and concentrations of trace elements, collected with a TSP sampler, were between 0.7 and 4900 ng m(-3) for Cd and Ca, respectively. The overall trace element dry deposition velocities, calculated by dividing the fluxes to the particle phase concentrations ranged from 2.3+/-1.7 cm s(-1) (Pb) to 11.1+/-6.4 cm s(-1) (Ni). These values are in good agreement with the values calculated using similar techniques. The anthropogenic and crustal contributions were estimated by employing enrichment factors (EFs) calculated relative to the average crustal composition. Low EFs for dry deposition samples were calculated. This is probably due to contamination of local dust and its important contribution to the collected samples.  相似文献

A good quality control/quality assurance programme should be implemented in all environmental or health related studies on mercury and its organic compounds, particularly, for monomethylmercury (MeHg) which is the most toxic mercury compound. This can be achieved initially by analysing suitable certified reference materials (CRMs), which are available from various producers such as the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) from USA, National Institute of Environmental Studies (NIES), National Research Council of Canada (NRCC), Standards, Measurements and Testing programme (SM&T) of the European Commission, and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). It is well understood that these materials are not covering present needs, as most of them are of the marine origin, while many laboratories are conducting research and monitoring in terrestrial ecosystems and fresh water environment. In addition, CRMs for human exposure assessment, such as blood, urine, and hair at several levels of concentrations are still lacking. Therefore, many other actions should be undertaken to achieve, improve and/or maintain quality of data, including participation in interlaboratory studies, proficiency testing and production of laboratory reference materials. A review of these actions has shown that MeHg compounds determination in samples such as soil, sediment and water is rather difficult and the results are also method dependent. In addition, it has been shown that some of the most frequently employed analytical methods may be a subject to spurious MeHg formation in the presence of high concentrations of inorganic mercury and organic matter. These findings have put a number of previous data on MeHg in question and consequently prompt actions were undertaken by a number of well experienced laboratories and producers of CRMs. So far, it is shown that the results obtained by various laboratories using different analytical techniques agree well with certified values in all RMs certified for MeHg. This suggests that comparability of data can be achieved, which however is not a guarantee of the true values.  相似文献

Ambient air dust samples were collected from industrial, commercial and residential areas of four metropolitan cities (Delhi, Calcutta, Madras and Cochin) in India, and were analysed for 27 elements (As, Ba, Br, Ce, Co, Cr, Cs, Cu, Eu, Hf, Hg, Fe, Ga, La, Lu, Na, P, Sb, Sc, Se, Sr, Ta, Tb, Th, Rb, Yb and Zn) by Instrumental Neutron Activation Analysis (INAA). Samples were irradiated with thermal neutrons in a nuclear reactor for 1 day and counted by high resolution gamma spectrometry at different intervals. Several environmental standards such as Coal (SRM 1932b); Urban Particulate Matter (SRM 1648) from NIST, USA; Vehicle Exhaust from NIES, Japan; and Soil-5 from IAEA, Vienna were also analysed for quality assurance. The results reveal that the concentrations of several pollutant elements in dust samples from the four cities are highly variable. Wide differences were observed for elemental concentrations of As, Ba, Br, Cu, Cr, Hg, Fe, Sb, Se and Zn and these variations are explained in terms of their possible sources of origin.  相似文献

Concentrations of PAHs and PCDD/Fs were measured throughout one year, and PCBs during the second semester, at a rural site in a natural park representative of background pollution in central Italy; results were compared with simultaneous measurements performed at an urban site in Rome 60km away. Twenty-four daily samples were collected at each site by a high-volume PM(10) sampler from February 2000 to January 2001. After ultrasonic extraction and clean-up by TLC, samples were analysed by GC-MS. Mean concentrations of benzo[a]pyrene (BaP, as a marker of carcinogenic PAHs), summation operatorPCDD/Fs and summation operator64 PCBs in Rome were, respectively: 1.1ngm(-3), 65fgWHO-TEQm(-3), 553pgm(-3). The background concentrations were, respectively: 0.016ngm(-3), 3fgWHO-TEQm(-3), and 94pgm(-3). Hence, BaP, and the other PAHs, showed the highest urban-background gradient (two orders of magnitude) and PCBs the lowest. The background pollution levels of BaP and PCDD/Fs were in agreement with the few available background/remote measurements in Europe. In Rome PAHs and PCBs, but not PCDD/Fs, were clearly seasonal; the PCDD/F TEQ was moderately correlated with BaP (P<0.001). At the background site, the seasonality of PAHs was less marked, while it could not be assessed for PCDD/Fs and PCBs. The PCB TEQ accounted for 4% and 15% of total (PCDD/Fs+PCBs) TEQ at the urban and background site, respectively. Mean PM(10) concentration was 54microgm(-3) in Rome and 15microgm(-3) at the background site.  相似文献

In the United States, it is necessary to analyze for toxaphene using approved, validated methods acceptable to the regulatory agencies. As a result of an interlaboratory study and technical exchanges among the US EPA Region IV (EPA), the State of Georgia Environmental Protection Division (EPD), and Hercules Incorporated, guidelines for the application of SW-846 Method 8080 were developed. Results of analyses for sludge, soil, and water samples agreed within a percent relative standard deviation (% RSD) range of 6.9-20%. Through continued technical interchanges, guidance for the application of SW-846 Method 8081 has been developed. The results of analyses of fourteen split samples of soil and sediment produced a percent relative standard deviation that ranged from 1.6% to 127%, with an average of 38%. When two unusually divergent results were removed from consideration, the average % RSD reduced to 26%. The results of analyses of split samples show agreement between the EPA laboratory and a Hercules contract laboratory. Therefore, the guidance has achieved its purpose of producing agreement among data from different laboratories so that data reviewers may have assurance that the analytical method has been applied correctly and consistently for the determination of toxaphene in environmental samples.  相似文献

Concentrations and congener specific profile of DDTs, PCBs and PCDD/Fs have been determined in a number of Spanish breast milk samples. The concentrations found indicate a decreasing tendency compared to previous data from the 1990s. Mean concentrations of 238 ng/g fat weight, 111 ng/g fat weight and 82.1 pg/g fat weight were found for DDTs, PCBs and 2,3,7,8-PCDD/Fs, respectively. When the WHO-TEQs were calculated, PCDD/Fs was the family contributing with the highest percentage to the total (62-84%), followed by the non-ortho PCBs (10-25%) and the mono-ortho PCBs (5-24%). The congener specific accumulation patterns found were comparable to those reported in other studies in industrialised countries. In addition, the levels of 9 PBDEs congeners have been also determined in the breast milk samples. The concentrations ranged from 0.04 to 1.38 ng/g fat weight. The enantiomeric enrichment of a number of chiral PCBs in the breast milk samples, including congeners 84, 91, 95, 132, 135, 149, 171, 174, 176 and 183, has also been studied, for some of them for the first time in this matrix.  相似文献

In this study, four certified particle standards including NIST SRM 1648 urban particulate matter, BCR Reference Material No. 176 city waste incineration ash, NIST SRM 2709 San Joaquin soil, and NIST SRM 1633b coal fly ash were used to simulate ambient particulate matter. Twenty-five samples were prepared with the four certified particulate standards. A total of 23 elements were analyzed per sample, 19 by ICP-AES and ICP-MS, three by IC, and one element, Si, by spectrophotometer. Results showed that combining the three IC-analyzed ionic species with the 19 ICP-AES/MS analyzed elements into the CMB model did not improve the source identification significantly. In addition, when all 23 analyzed chemical species per sample were used in the CMB model, they were still not good enough to effectively make the parameters of the CMB model fit the statistical criteria. Some of high variation and low recovery chemical species, i.e. Cd, V, Sb, etc., may have caused poor CMB model simulation. Omitting some poor quality analyzed species (such as relative analysis error >20%) could improve the CMB model simulation. Therefore, high quality chemical species data are important for the CMB model. In addition, co-linearity of source profiles also affects the CMB model; combining the co-linear sources could enhance the solubility of the CMB model. In this study, a two-step procedure was developed for CMB model simulation to improve source identification.  相似文献

The National Institute of Standards and Technology has issued numerous environmental matrix standard reference materials (SRMs) for the measurement of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons; however, only one SRM (diesel particulate material) was issued with certified and reference values for four nitrated-polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (nitro-PAH). The objective of this study was to develop an improved analytical procedure to quantify 28 mononitro- and dinitro-PAHs, including numerous isomers, in air and diesel particulate SRMs. Two air particulate matrix SRMs, SRM 1649a Urban Dust and SRM 1648 Urban Particulate Matter, and fine particulate matter, collected from Baltimore MD for use as an "interim reference material" for the determination of organic contaminants, have been characterized for nitro-PAHs. Concentrations of nitro-PAHs in all three air particulate materials were at the ng/g level with the highest nitro-PAH concentration being 2-nitrofluoranthene (range between 246 and 340 ng/g). For the three diesel particulate-related SRMs, SRM 1650a Diesel Particulate Matter, SRM 1975 Diesel Particulate Extract, and SRM 2975 Diesel Particulate Matter (Industrial Fortlift), concentrations of nitro-PAHs were in the microg/g range, with 1-nitropyrene as the dominant nitro-PAH (range between 18 and 40 microg/g). Distinct nitro-PAH isomer patterns were present between the air and diesel particulate materials. These results will provide isomer identification and reference concentrations for a large number of nitro-PAHs in the existing diesel and air particulate SRMs. Published by Elsevier Science Ltd.  相似文献

Milk and milk products have shown to be good indicator samples for the contamination of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) along the food chain. To gather information on whether exposure to dioxins and PCBs might cause a problem in countries about to join the European Union in 2004 or later, a study for evaluation of dioxin and levels of PCBs in 16 butter samples from eight countries (Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Slovenia and Slovakia) was performed. Comprehensive quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) was requested. For this, eight quality control samples were included (in comparison to long-term mean, mean recovery for WHO-PCDD/F-TEQ of 97.9% with a CV of 3.0%, mean recovery for WHO-PCB-TEQ of 100.4% with a CV of 3.3%). Additionally, all butter samples were run as duplicates resulting in a confidence region of 95% statistical certainty of 4.6% for WHO-PCDD/F-TEQ and of 3.5% for WHO-PCB-TEQ. All samples except one from Romania were in the range of 0.21-0.59 pg WHO-PCDD/F-TEQ/g fat (upper bound), all samples except one from Romania and one from Estonia in the range of 0.32-0.82 pg WHO-PCB-TEQ/g fat (upper bound) and all samples except one from Romania and one from Estonia in the range of 0.57-1.23 pg sum WHO-TEQ/g fat (upper bound). The maximum values were found in samples from Romania (0.98 pg WHO-PCDD/F-TEQ/g fat; 1.75 pg WHO-PCB-TEQ/g fat) and Estonia (0.26 pg WHO-PCDD/F-TEQ/g fat; 1.62 pg WHO-PCB-TEQ/g fat). As a conclusion, all samples except one from Romania and one from Estonia were in the range of the actual low background contamination for PCDD/F and dioxin-like PCBs. The samples with elevated concentrations were below the EU action and maximum levels which have been valid since 2002, or will be applied from November 2006. In all samples except in one from Estonia, the contribution of dioxin-like PCBs to sum WHO-TEQ was 47-68% which reflects the usual range in Europe. In one sample from Estonia this contribution was 86% which points to a particular yet unknown PCB source. Thirty eight PCB congeners were determined allowing a detailed discussion of the relative contribution of individual congeners to the total PCB concentration. Correlation between PCB 153 and WHO-PCB-TEQ varied considerably between samples from different countries. Major tetra- or pentachlorinated mono-ortho PCBs without assigned TEFs were PCBs 60, 66, 74, and 110.  相似文献

Wolverines (Gulo gulo) are circumpolar omnivores that live throughout the alpine and arctic tundra ecosystem. Wolverine livers were collected at Kugluktuk (Coppermine), NU (n=12) in the western Canadian Arctic to report, for the first time, the residue patterns of persistent organochlorine contaminants (OCs) in this species. The enantiomer fractions (EFs) of several chiral OCs, including PCB atropisomers, in wolverines were also determined. Results were compared to OC concentrations and EFs of chiral contaminants in arctic fox (Alopex lagopus) from Ulukhaqtuuq (Holman), NT (n=20); a closely related species that scavenges the marine and terrestrial arctic environment. The rank order of hepatic concentrations for sum ( summation operator ) OC groups in wolverines were polychlorinated biphenyls ( summation operator PCB)>chlordane-related components ( summation operator CHLOR)>DDT-related compounds ( summation operator DDT)>hexachlorocyclohexane isomers ( summation operator HCHs). The most abundant OC analytes detected in wolverine liver were PCB-153, PCB-180, and oxychlordane (OXY). Wolverine age and gender did not influence OC concentrations, which were comparable to lipid-normalized values in arctic fox. The EFs of several chiral OCs (alpha-HCH, cis- and trans-chlordane, OXY, heptachlor exo-epoxide) and PCB atropisomers (PCB-136, 149) were nonracemic in arctic fox and wolverine liver and similar to those previously calculated in arctic fox and polar bears from Iceland and the Canadian Arctic. Results suggest that these species have similar ability to biotransform OCs. As well, contaminant profiles suggest that terrestrial mammals do not represent the major source of OC exposure to wolverines and that wolverines are scavenging more contaminated prey items, such as marine mammals. While summation operator PCB did not exceed the concentrations associated with mammalian reproductive impairment, future research is required to properly evaluate the potential affect of other OCs on the overall health of wolverines.  相似文献
