A study was conducted to investigate the effects of time-gap settings and contents of secondary tasks on a fix-based bus driving simulator on drivers’ performance while reclaiming control from ACC in a car-following scenario of emergency brake by the lead vehicle. Thirty professional bus drivers drove on the simulator with the scenario of highway traffic flow under 12 random time-gap settings: from 0.64 s to 2.40 s with the interval of 0.16 s. As for the effects of secondary tasks, subjects were evenly divided into three conditions: no secondary task interference, simple secondary task, and complex task. The results demonstrated that different safety demarcations of time-gaps on subjective acceptance and driving performance can be found out. The integrated demarcations separated time-gaps into divisions that represented different levels of danger. It revealed that the safer time-gaps for different situations were: longer than 1.60 s for none-secondary task distraction and longer than 2.08 s for being continuously distracted by secondary tasks. The demand for simple tasks is relatively high, so a larger time-gap is needed for the driver to remain safe. This research has implications for the time-gap selection of ACC and effects of secondary task distraction on buses. A next logical step will focus on determining time-gaps for lead vehicles on curves or slopes, when multiple vehicles are present ahead, and modeling driver behavior and performance with ACC for cars, buses, and other types of vehicles.  相似文献

IntroductionOccupational injuries are a relevant research and practical issue. However, intervention studies evaluating the effectiveness of workplace injury prevention programs are seldom performed. Method: The effectiveness of a multifaceted intervention aimed at reducing occupational injury rates (incidence/employment-based = IR, frequency/hours-based = FR, severity = SR) was evaluated between 2008 and 2013 in 29 Italian foundries (22 ferrous; 7 non-ferrous; 3,460 male blue collar workers/year) of varying sizes. Each foundry established an internal multidisciplinary prevention team for risk assessment, monitoring and prevention of occupational injuries, involving employers, occupational physicians, safety personnel, workers' representatives, supervisors. Targets of intervention were workers, equipment, organization, workplace, job tasks. An interrupted time series (ITS) design was applied. Results: 4,604 occupational injuries and 83,156 lost workdays were registered between 2003 and 2013. Statistical analysis showed, after intervention, a reduction of all injury rates (− 26% IR, − 15% FR, −18% SR) in ferrous foundries and of SR (− 4%) in non-ferrous foundries. A significant (p = 0.021) ‘step-effect’ was shown for IR in ferrous foundries, independent of secular trends (p < 0.001). Sector-specific benchmarks for all injury rates were developed separately for ferrous and non-ferrous foundries. Conclusions: Strengths of the study were: ITS design, according to standardized quality criteria (i.e., at least three data points before and three data points after intervention; clearly defined intervention point); pragmatic approach, with good external validity; promotion of effective good practices. Main limitations were the non-randomized nature and a medium length post-intervention period. In conclusion, a multifaceted, pragmatic and accountable intervention is effective in reducing the burden of occupational injuries in small-, medium- and large-sized foundries. Practical Applications: The study poses the basis for feasible good practice guidelines to be implemented to prevent occupational injuries, by means of sector-specific numerical benchmarks, with potentially relevant impacts on workers, companies, occupational health professionals and society at large.  相似文献

Despite the increasing weight of workers, most energy absorbers of personal fall arrest systems are only tested to 100 kg. In addressing this shortcoming this research aims to evaluate the capacity of fall arrest energy absorbers in relation to the weight of heavy workers so as to provide recommendations for improvements to current fall arrest standards. A series of dynamic drop tests based on the Australian and New Zealand fall protection equipment standard (AS/NZS 1891.1:2007) were conducted. A total of 31 samples on seven types of energy absorbers were undertaken. The experiment simulated a worst credible scenario of a 3.8 m fall of a rigid mass which was connected using inelastic material. The capacity of each type of energy absorber was determined using the test mass that caused one or both of the following test criteria to be breached: (1) at least two samples reached the maximum possible extension and (2) at least two samples had the maximum arrest force exceeding 7 kN. The estimated capacities were then compared with the 95th percentile weight of worker working at height. The research demonstrates that most energy absorbers are not able to ensure that the two test criteria are not breached during the arrest of a heavy worker in the worst case scenario fall. It is recommended that the test mass stipulated in fall arrest standards should be revised and increased to accommodate the increasing weight of workers.  相似文献

Cationic polyelectrolyte promoted effective attachment of iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) onto microalgal cells through electrostatic attraction. Poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA) and chitosan (ChiL), both are cationic polymer, are feasible to act as binding agent to promote rapid magnetophoretic separation of Chlorella sp. through low gradient magnetic separation (LGMS) with field gradient ▿B less than 80 T/m in real time. Cell separation efficiency up to 98% for the case of PDDA and 99% for the case of ChiL can be achieved in 6 min when 3 × 107 cells/mL Chlorella sp. are exposed to 300 mg/L surface functionalized-IONPs (SF-IONPs). Different polyelectrolytes do not give significant effect on cell separation efficiency as long as the particle attachment occurred. However, the PDDA is more preferable as the binder for all type of microalgae medium than the chitosan (ChiL) since it is not pH dependent. SF-IONPs coated with PDDA guarantee the cell separation performance for all pH range of cell medium, with 98.21 ± 0.40% at pH 8.84. On the other hand, the ChiL performance will be affected by the cell medium pH, with only 22.93 ± 31.03% biomass recovery at pH 9.25.  相似文献

An ozonation process was performed using a recycled electrochemical ozone generator system. A titanium based electrode, coated with nanocomposite of Sn–Sb–Ni was applied as anode in a laboratory-made electrochemical reactor. A constant flow rate of 192 mg/h of generated ozone was entered to an ozonation reactor to contact with a typical target pollutant, i.e., Rhodamine B (Rh.B) molecules in aqueous solution. Four operational parameters such as: initial dye concentration, pH, temperature and the contact time were evaluated for the ozonation process. Experimental findings revealed that for a solution of 8 mg/L of the dye, the degradation efficiency could reach to 99.5% after 30 min at pH 3.7 and temperature of 45 °C as the optimum conditions. Kinetic studies showed that a second order equation can describe the ozonation adequately well under different temperatures. Also, considering to the importance of process simulation, a three-layered feed forward back propagation artificial neural network model was developed. Sensitivity analysis indicated order of the operational parameter's relative importance on the model output as: time  pH > Rh . B initial concentration > temperature.  相似文献

The aim of this research was to study the on-site anaerobic treatment of a medium-strength residential wastewater in a pilot-scale up-flow septic tank (UST). The effects of three different hydraulic retention times (HRTs) of 24, 12 and 6 h on the UST performance were investigated. The UST removed 85, 77, and 86% of biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5), chemical oxygen demand (COD) and total suspended solids (TSS), respectively, at steady state operation and with a 24 h HRT. Decreasing the HRT to 12 and then 6 h resulted in deteriorated effluent quality and significantly reduced reactor performance. The sludge showed a high specific methanogenic activity (SMA) of 15.2 mL CH4 g?1 VSS d?1 with raw wastewater substrate. The solids accumulated in the tank by the end of the experiment had a VSS/TSS of 0.57, demonstrating significant stabilization. Overall, the UST is concluded to be a technically and economically promising alternative to conventional septic tanks for the on-site decentralized treatment of residential wastewater, particularly in the rural communities of developing countries.  相似文献

IntroductionThe distributions of motorcycle crash impacts and injuries were compared to the four impact risk zones and protective performance specified in the European Standard for motorcycle clothing (EN 13595).MethodsCrashed motorcyclists' (n = 117) injuries and clothing damage were categorized by body area into the four risk zones. Three levels of protection were defined: protective clothing with impact protection, protective clothing only and non-protective clothing.ResultsThe distribution of impact/injury sites corresponded to the predictions of EN 13595, with the proportion of all injuries decreasing from 43.9% in Zone 1, to 18.0%, 16.7%, and 11.5% in Zones 2 to 4, respectively. Protective clothing modified the distribution of injuries with substantially more injuries (OR = 2.69, 95% CL: 20.1–3.59) at unprotected impact sites.Practical applicationThese findings support an appropriate framework for determining performance specifications for the manufacture of motorcycle clothing that will effectively reduce the risk of injury in crashes.  相似文献

Treatment of Methyl Orange (MO), an azo dye, synthetic wastewater by electrocoagulation with periodic reversal of the electrodes (PREC) was examined. Response Surface Methodology (RSM) was used to optimize the influence of experimental conditions for color removal (CR), energy consumption (ENC), electrode consumption (ELC) and sludge production (SP) per kg MO removed (kg(MOr)) with optimal conditions being found to be pH 7.4, solution conductivity (к) 9.4 mS cm−1, cell voltage (U) 4.4 V, current density (j) 185 mA cm−2, electrocoagulation time (T) 14 min, cycle of periodic reversal of electrodes (t) 15 s, inter-electrode distance (d) 3.5 cm and initial MO concentration of 125 mg L−1. Under these conditions, 97 ± 2% color was removed and ENC, ELC and SP were 44 ± 3 kWh kg(MOr)−1, 4.1 ± 0.2 kg(Al) kg(MOr)−1 and 17.2 ± 0.9 kg(sludge) kg(MOr)−1, respectively. With the enhanced electrochemical efficiency resulting from the periodic electrode reversal, the coefficients of increased resistance and decreased current density between the two electrodes in the PREC setup were 2.48 × 10−4 Ω cm−2 min−1 and 0.29 mA cm−2 min−1, respectively, as compared to 7.72 × 10−4 Ω cm−2 min−1 and 0.79 mA cm−2 min−1 as measured for the traditional electrocoagulation process. The rate constant of decolorization was also enhanced by 20.4% from 0.152 min−1 in the traditional electrocoagulation process to 0.183 min−1 in the PREC process. These performance characteristics indicate that the PREC approach may be more promising in terms of practical application, as a cost-effective treatment, than conventional electrocoagulation for textile dye removals.  相似文献

This paper reports the performance of a compost biofilter subjected to periodic intermittent loads of gas-phase hexane and toluene. The biofilter was operated for 10 h per day, at different empty bed residence times (4, 2 and 1.3 min), and at different inlet concentrations of hexane and toluene, varying between 2 and 3.8 g m?3, respectively. Steady-state removal efficiency profiles, reaching more than 90% for both the pollutants, was observed after 44 days of operation. Periodic operation of the compost biofilter was characterized by an adsorption step, followed by biological conversion of the pollutants by the microorganisms inherent to the compost. After resuming daily biofilter operation, the required times for biochemical reaction to dominate the initial adsorption step was observed to be 2.5 and 1 h, respectively, for toluene and hexane. The maximum elimination capacity due to the biological step was found to be 61.6 g m?3 h?1. The results from this study showed the effectiveness of the biofilter to handle mixtures of gas-phase pollutants, subjected to regular intermittent operations, thus proving their worthiness for industrial use.  相似文献

Biological control of odor gases has gained more attention in recent years. In this study, removal performance of a vertical bio-trickling filter inoculated with bacteria and fungi was studied. Bacteria and fungi were isolated from activated sludge in a sewage treatment plant. By adopting “three step immobilization method”, the bio-trickling filter could degrade pollutant immediately once hydrogen sulfide (H2S) passed. The optimal empty bed resident time was 20 s. The optimal elimination capacity was about 60 g H2S m?3 h?1 with removal efficiency of 95%. And the maximum elimination capacity was 170 g H2S m?3 h?1. Pressure drop was ranged between 5 and 15 mm H2O per bed over the whole operation. Removal efficiency was not affected obviously after terminating nutrient supply. The bio-trickling filter could recover back after shut down H2S gaseous and liquid supplies simultaneously. Microbial community structure in the bio-trickling filter was not changed significantly.Combining bacteria and fungi would be a better choice for inoculation into a bio-trickling filter because of the quickly degradation of H2S and rapid recovery under shut-down experiment. This is the first study attempting to combine bacteria and fungi for removal of H2S in a bio-trickling filter.  相似文献

IntroductionDriving self-regulation is considered a means through which older drivers can compensate for perceived declines in driving skill or more general feelings of discomfort on the road. One form of driving self-regulation is situational avoidance, the purposeful avoidance of situations perceived as challenging or potentially hazardous. This study aimed to validate the Situational Avoidance Questionnaire (SAQ, Davis, Conlon, Ownsworth, & Morrissey, 2016) and identify the point on the scale at which drivers practicing compensatory avoidance behavior could be distinguished from those whose driving is unrestricted, or who are avoiding situations for other, non-compensatory reasons (e.g., time or convenience).MethodSeventy-nine Australian drivers (Mage = 71.48, SD = 7.16, range: 55 to 86 years) completed the SAQ and were classified as a compensatory-restricted or a non-restricted driver based on a semi-structured interview designed to assess the motivations underlying avoidance behavior reported on the SAQ.ResultsUsing receiver-operator characteristic (ROC) analysis, the SAQ was found to have high diagnostic accuracy (sensitivity: 85%, specificity: 82%) in correctly classifying the driver groups. Group comparisons confirmed that compensatory-restricted drivers were self-regulating their driving behavior to reduce the perceived demands of the driving task. This group had, on average, slower hazard perception reaction times, and reported greater difficulty with driving, more discomfort when driving due to difficulty with hazard perception skills, and greater changes in cognition over the past five years.ConclusionsThe SAQ is a psychometrically sound measure of situational avoidance for drivers in baby boomer and older adult generations.Practical applicationsUse of validated measures of driving self-regulation that distinguish between compensatory and non-compensatory behavior, such as the SAQ, will advance our understanding of the driving self-regulation construct and its potential safety benefits for older road users.  相似文献

IntroductionThis study investigates how speed limits affect driver speed selection, as well as the related crash risk, while controlling for various confounding factors such as traffic volumes and roadway geometry. Data from a naturalistic driving study are used to examine how driver speed selection varies among freeways with different posted speed limits, as well as how the likelihood of crash/near-crash events change with respect to mean speed and standard deviation.MethodRegression models are estimated to assess three measures of interest: the average speed of vehicles during the time preceding crash/near-crash and baseline (i.e., normal) driving events; the variation in travel speeds leading up to each event as quantified by the standard deviation in speeds over this period; and the probability of a specific event resulting in a crash/near-crash based on speed selection and other factors.ResultsSpeeds were relatively stable across levels-of-service A and B, within a range of 1.5 mph on average. Speeds were marginally lower (3.3 mph) on freeways posted at 65 mph versus 70 mph. In comparison, speeds were approximately 10.2 to 13.4 mph lower on facilities posted at 55 mph or 60 mph. Speeds were shown to be 2.5 mph lower in rainy weather and 11 mph lower under snow or sleet.ConclusionsSignificant correlation was observed with respect to speed selection behavior among the same individuals. Mean speeds are shown to increase with speed limits. However, these increases are less pronounced at higher speed limits. Drivers tend to reduce their travel speeds in presence of junctions and work zones, under adverse weather conditions, and particularly under heavy congestion. Crash risk increased with the standard deviation in speed, as well as on vertical curves and ramp junctions, and among the youngest and oldest age groups of drivers.  相似文献

The aim of this research was to upgrade the performance of a conventional septic tank (CST) for on-site treatment of sewage with negligible costs. Although CST is known as an inexpensive pre-treatment system, a complementary treatment is required to reuse its output effluent. In this work, the quality of treated wastewater reached to the standard level for irrigation by the innovational changes made in the structure of CST for converting it into an advanced septic reactor (ASR). The modification consists adding some pipe and trays without using any mechanical or electrical equipment.ASR was operated at ambient temperatures in laboratory and pilot-scale. The effects of up-flow velocities (Vup) of 0.4, 0.5, 0.7, 1 and 1.5 m/h and hydraulic retention times (HRT) of 36, 24 and 12 h on the ASR treatment performance were studied.For optimum Vup of 1 m/h and HRT of 24 h and biomass specific methanogenic activity (SMA) of 0.31 mg COD/g VSS d the maximum removal of chemical oxygen demand (COD), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5) and total suspended solids (TSS) were 86.2%, 79.4% and 95%, respectively.The results showed that ASR is an appropriate alternative for CST for sewage on-site treatment by a low cost modification.  相似文献

BackgroundChemical hazard communication is intended to alert users of the potential hazards of chemicals. Hazard information needs to be understood and recalled. Recall of hazard communication is critical when the written form of the information is not available at the time it is required.MethodsA cross-sectional study investigating associations between recall of chemical safety information on labels amongst 402 participants including 315 workers and 87 consumers in two provinces of South Africa.ResultsRespondents were predominantly male (67.7%), the median age was 37 years (IQR: 30-46 years) and less than half of the participants completed high school (47.5%). Multivariate analysis identified the following positive associations with the recall of all the label elements listing the strongest association: call appropriate services and industrial vs consumer sector (OR = 2.4; 95% CI: 1.2; 4.6 ); call appropriate services and transport vs consumer sector (OR = 4.4; 95% CI: 1.2; 16.0); flammable symbol and male vs female gender (OR = 2.3; 95% CI: 1.0; 5.3); flammable symbol and home language English vs African languages (OR = 6.6; 95% CI: 2.1; 21.2); any hazard statement and home language Afrikaans vs African languages (OR = 14.0; 95% CI: 3.6; 54.2), any first aid statement and further education vs none (OR = 3.3; 95% CI: 1.3; 8.0), correct chemical name and industry blue collar workers vs non-industry blue collar workers (OR = 2.6; 95% CI: 1.1; 6.1), correct chemical name and non-industry white collar occupations vs non-industry blue collar workers (OR = 2.7; 95% CI: 1.0; 7.1).ConclusionThe study found a number of potential positive associations which influence recall of label elements of which some (e.g., sector, gender, occupation) suggest further research. Relevant policies in South Africa should ensure that the safety information on chemical labels is clearly visible to read and understandable which aids recall and the reduction in harmful chemical exposures.  相似文献

Granulation of nitrifying bacteria was investigated in a continuous bubble column bioreactor. Then, the combined effect of aeration and ammonium loading rates on dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration as well as nitrification process was evaluated in the system using an experimental design technique. After 120 days, stable nitrifying granules with average diameter of 1.4 mm and settling velocities of 55 m/h were obtained. The influence of increasing ammonium loading rate (ALR) was found to be more significant than decreasing aeration rate on the reduction of DO concentration inside the nitrifying bioreactor. The system could handle the ALR values of 0.48–1.92 gNH4+-N/L d with the ammonium removal efficiency from 65% to nearly 100% at the tested airflow rates of 2.5 and 4.5 L/min. At the low aeration, the complete ammonium conversion to nitrate was replaced with nitrite when the ALR increased to 1.44 gNH4+-N/L d. At the high aeration, however, almost complete nitrification was achieved except the high ALR in which the nitrite accumulation was observed up to 38%. The study demonstrated that the continuous bioreactor had a considerable performance for obtaining stable nitrifying granules to have nitrite accumulation under control with changing the ratio of aeration rate and ALR.  相似文献

Impact on IndustryPreventing speed-related crashes could reduce costs and improve efficiency in the transportation industry.ObjectiveThis research examined the psychosocial and personality predictors of observed speeding among young drivers.MethodSurvey and driving data were collected from 42 newly-licensed teenage drivers during the first 18 months of licensure. Speeding (i.e., driving 10 mph over the speed limit; about 16 km/h) was assessed by comparing speed data collected with recording systems installed in participants' vehicles with posted speed limits.ResultsSpeeding was correlated with elevated g-force event rates (r = 0.335, pb0.05), increased over time, and predicted by day vs. night trips, higher sensation seeking, substance use, tolerance of deviance, susceptibility to peer pressure, and number of risky friends. Perceived risk was a significant mediator of the association between speeding and risky friends.ConclusionThe findings support the contention that social norms may influence teenage speeding behavior and this relationship may operate through perceived risk.  相似文献

The response of two biofilters filled with an organic waste material for treating ethylbenzene and toluene was studied for 415 and 472 operating days, respectively. The peak elimination capacities (ECMAX) recorded were 170 g m?3 h?1 for ethylbenzene (ECMAX) and 138 g m?3 h?1 for toluene. Regarding the degradation profile through the biofilters, an increase in the inlet concentration displaced the degradation profile into the downstream section. A sudden decrease in the performance of both biofilters occurred when the moisture content (MC) of the packing material exceeded 37% for ethylbenzene and 30% for toluene. Thus, a recommended MC value was established in the 15–30% range. Given the bioreactor was operated at a low MC level, fungi prevailed over bacteria. Nevertheless, synergism was detected between both microorganism types for the mineralization of the aromatic hydrocarbons.  相似文献

Biodegradation of toluene vapour was investigated for 168 days in a polyurethane packed biofilter inoculated with a mixed microbial population. Biofilter consisted of five square cross-section modular units each of size 0.16 m × 0.16 m × 0.20 m and filled with the polyurethane foam cubes up to a height of 0.15 m. Inlet concentration of toluene was varied from 0.04 to 2.5 g m?3 and the volumetric flow rate of toluene loaded air from 0.06 to 0.90 m3 h?1.Depending upon initial loading rates, removal efficiency ranging from 68.2 to 99.9% and elimination capacity ranging from 10.85 to 90.48 g h?1 m?3 were observed during steady state operations. More than 90% removal efficiency was observed up to an inlet loading rate of 76.3 g h?1 m?3. High carbon recovery (>90%) indicated effective biodegradation in the bed. Low variation of pH (7.2–8.8) and pressure drop (45.8–76.3 Pa) was observed. The stability of the biomass was evident from the fast response of the biofilter to shutdown and restartup.  相似文献

In this research nanocatalysts containing 5, 10 and 15 wt.% of Ni, dispersed by sonication over CeO2–clinoptilolite composite support were compared toward total oxidation of toluene. Their catalytic performance at different temperatures between 150 and 350 °C was studied based on the oxidative destruction of toluene. The results indicated that the activity of Ni/CeO2–clinoptilolite nanocatalyst for toluene oxidation increased from 33 to 44% at 250 °C by employing sonochemical method in synthesis of catalyst. Meanwhile, the catalytic activity was also improved when Ni content was increased from 5 to 10 and 15 wt.%. With the aid of several characterization techniques like XRD, FESEM, PSD, EDX, BET and FTIR, the correlation between nanocatalyst structure and its activity was addressed. It is indicated that sonochemical method can lift the catalytic activity due to the better dispersion of catalyst active components and also higher surface area. Among sonicated samples, 15 wt.% Ni nanocatalyst showed the highest toluene oxidation due to the better dispersion of catalyst active components and hence to more effective catalytic sites.  相似文献
