Seagrass distribution was recorded by snorkel dives on a grid of stations in the waterfront of Club Méditerranée at Mon Choisy-Trou Aux Biches lagoon (NW Mauritius) and subsequently mapped using SURFER 6 computer software. Above-ground (AG) and below-ground (BG) standing biomass in terms of dry weight (DW) and ash-free dry weight (AFDW) as well as shoot density and shoot length were monitored monthly from June1997 to May1998 in a mixed stand of Halodule uninervis and Syringodium isoetifolium (dominant) at a shallow, nearshore station in the lagoon. Measurements of physical and chemical parameters [water temperature, current speed, salinity, pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), nitrate and phosphate concentrations] were made simultaneously, as well as at a reference station (ORE) outside the coral reef. The bottom sediment was analysed for grain size and type composition. Variation patterns were examined and statistical correlations drawn to relate plant performance to the environmental variables measured. The SURFER 6 programme generated a satisfactory contour map of seagrass distribution in the lagoon with a cover range of 0-60%. The densest patches occurred adjacent to the shoreline experiencing weaker water currents (3-13 cm s-1) rather than near the reef (5-35 cm s-1), where seagrasses were absent. Sand (0.063-2 mm grain size) constituted 97.2% and 77.6% of the nearshore and near-reef sediment, respectively. The dominant grain types were derived from corals (about 80%) and mollusc shells (about 14%). The recorded range of total standing biomass for H. uninervis was 243.1-468.2 g DW m-2 (326.9ᇛ.7 g) or 71.7-141.2 g AFDW m-2 (96.8ᆨ.1 g) and for S. isoetifolium it was 271.7-758 g DW m-2 (460.4끯.1 g) or 119-220.5 g AFDW m-2 (155.1ᆮ.5 g), with a maximum biomass increase during September-December in both species. AG:BG biomass ratios were generally <1 and approximated 1 during the warmest months of December-February only. Mean shoot density (1,077-4,364 shoots m-2 in the overall range of 998-4,428 shoots m-2) and mean shoot length (10.9-20.8 cm in the overall range of 7-31 cm) in S. isoetifolium were higher than in H. uninervis (1,732-4,137 shoots m-2 in the overall range of 1,522-4,327 shoots m-2 and 7.9-13.7 cm in the overall range of 6-20 cm, respectively). Temperature showed strong positive correlations with total AFDW biomass of both species (r=0.755, P<0.01 for H. uninervis; r=0.679, P<0.02 for S. isoetifolium) and with DO (r=0.925, P<0.01). High DO levels (10.7-11.2 mg l-1) coincided with optimum standing biomass at 27.2°C. Correlations were also strong with shoot density (r=0.881, P<0.01 for H. uninervis; r=0.952, P<0.01 for S. isoetifolium) and shoot length (r=0.752, P<0.01 for H. uninervis; r=0.797, P<0.01 for S. isoetifolium). Under optimal environmental conditions, nutrient inputs from surface run-off or underground freshwater seepage in the lagoon due to heavy rainfall may boost up seagrass biomass, as suggested by positive significant correlations between phosphate levels and AG AFDW biomass (r=0.63, P<0.05 for H. uninervis; r=0.65, P<0.05 for S. isoetifolium) and shoot density (r=0.6, P<0.05 for H. uninervis; r=0.687, P<0.02 for S. isoetifolium). The results generated in this study suggest local seagrass standing biomass is comparable to that reported in monospecific stands from elsewhere. Anthropogenic activities increasingly draw down the resilience of the seagrass beds around Mauritius, and preventative measures are indispensable to achieve coastal ecological stability.  相似文献

A haemolymph colour index is developed in an attempt to improve the resolution of serum protein data in the characterisation of temporal and spatial changes in the condition and growth of a wild population of Jasus edwardsii. The index can be used as an indicator of nutritional condition if combined with conventional moult staging techniques. Lobsters and haemolymph samples were collected from two high- and two low-growth sites over two fishing seasons. Haemolymph samples were analysed for serum protein and astaxanthin level and categorised according to colour, that is, "pigment stage" (PS). Moult stage data were collected and abdominal and hepatopancreatic tissue analysed for percent dry weight. Haemolymph colour changes from light blue-grey, through beige, to deep orange during the moult cycle. These changes were explained with reference to the major pigment, astaxanthin, which increased from 0.135 mg/l (ǂ.054, n=38) at PS 1 (early intermoult) to 2.670 mg/l (ǂ.599, n=12) at PS 4.5 (late premoult). There were significant increases in percent abdominal and hepatopancreatic dry tissue weight over the moult cycle (Kruskal-Wallis non-parametric ANOVA, P<0.05), especially during intermoult. Serum protein levels increased concomitantly and were significantly correlated with percent dry weight of both tissues (abdomen: r2=0.78, n=871, P<0.001; hepatopancreas: r2=0.64, n=864, P<0.001) There were also significant differences between sites in both PS-specific serum protein and percent dry tissue. Lobster condition differed significantly between sites, probably as a result of temperature-mediated effects on growth rate. The addition of haemolymph pigment to the serum protein index allows the differentiation of lobsters at the beginning, middle and end of intermoult.  相似文献

This study measured the progression from pelagic larvae to juvenile barnacles, and examined whether recruitment of barnacles, Semibalanus balanoides Linnaeus, at two intertidal sites in contrasting hydrodynamic regimes was determined by pre-settlement or post-settlement processes. The two sites were 1.5 km apart in the vicinity of Woods Hole, Mass., USA. Quantitative plankton samples were taken twice weekly from December 1997 to May 1998 at a nearby site as an estimate of nearshore larval abundance. The presence of S. balanoides nauplii was noted, and cyprids were enumerated and measured. Larval settlement at the two sites [Gansett Point, Buzzards Bay (GP) and Little Harbor, Vineyard Sound (LH)] was estimated from examination of replicate settlement plates exposed for 2 or 3 days throughout the settlement season, and from replicate plots on marked rock quadrats at each site. On both plates and rocks settled cyprids and metamorphs were enumerated. Space occupancy on unmanipulated rock quadrats by all stages from cyprids to adult barnacles was also examined. Settlement occurred from 2 January to 20 May, and major settlement peaks coincided with peaks in pelagic cyprid concentration at LH, but not at GP. Space occupied by juvenile barnacles was close to zero up until late February despite substantial settlement prior to that. At LH, juvenile barnacle cover was zero at the end of the observations; all settlement failed. Almost 100% of settled cyprids failed to metamorphose within 2 days from late January to late March. Then the proportion metamorphosing increased sharply coinciding with a sudden increase of 3°C in water temperature. Observed site differences in space occupancy by juvenile barnacles suggest that while cyprid supply is a necessary condition for barnacle settlement, other factors affecting metamorphosis of settled cyprids and early juvenile mortality determine recruitment.  相似文献

An investigation of the fatty acid composition of a natural arctic plankton community was carried out over two fishing banks located between 63°N and 65°N off the West Greenland coast. Samples for fatty acid analyses, species determination and biomass assessments of the plankton community were taken at the depth of fluorescence maximum. High biomass and diatom dominance during the spring bloom and low biomass and flagellate dominance in the post-bloom period were reflected by the fatty acid profiles. The total amount of fatty acid ranged from 55 to 132 µg l-1 during the spring bloom and from 1 to 5 µg l-1 during the post bloom. Analysis of the fatty acids showed that when the plankton was dominated by diatoms of the genera Thalassiosira and Chaetoceros, the proportions of C16:1(n-7) and C20:5(n-3) were correspondingly high. C18s, and particularly C18:1(n-9), were more abundant when the plankton was dominated by small autotrophic flagellates, primarily haptophytes. We found a good positive correlation between the common diatom marker, C16:1(n-7)/C16:0, and the biomass percentage of diatoms (r=0.742, P<0.001), as well as between the biomass percentage of flagellates and total C18 fatty acids (r=0.739, P<0.001). This supports the use of these specific fatty acids and fatty acid ratios as general biomarkers of the plankton community. However, the fatty acids are not specific enough to sufficiently characterise the composition of the plankton community, and microscopical support is needed to verify observed trends.  相似文献

In aquaculture centers of the northern region of Japan, "Nami-ita" (waved polycarbonate plates), on which the green alga Ulvella lens Crouan frat. (Chaetophoraceae: Chaetophorales) was cultured, are used to promote larval settlement and metamorphosis of the sea urchin species Strongylocentrotus intermedius (A. Agassiz) and S. nudus (A. Agassiz). We investigated chemical inducer(s) for larval settlement and metamorphosis of these sea urchins with extracts of U. lens. Bioassay-guided separation of the methanol extract using a combination of column and thin-layer chromatography led to the isolation of several active compounds, the chemical structures of which were determined by spectral and chemical methods. These active compounds were identified as glycoglycerolipids, all comprising several molecular species: sulfoquinovosyl monoacylglycerols (SQMGs), sulfoquinovosyl diacylglycerols (SQDGs), monogalactosyl monoacylglycerols (MGMGs), monogalactosyl diacylglycerols (MGDGs), digalactosyl monoacylglycerols (DGMGs) and digalactosyl diacylglycerols (DGDGs). Among these glycolipids, SQMGs, MGMGs, MGDGs and DGMGs induced larval metamorphosis of the sea urchin S. intermedius. SQMGs and MGDGs induced larval metamorphosis at a concentration of 5 µg ml-1, whereas SQDGs and DGDGs only induced larval settlement. These glycoglycerolipids are new congeners of chemical inducers to settlement and metamorphosis of planktonic larvae of sea urchins. The findings would provide a better understanding of larval settlement and metamorphosis in sea urchins.  相似文献

The spatial distribution and population structure of two dominant ice-associated copepods, Drescheriella glacialis and Paralabidocera antarctica, were studied during winter at nine locations in east Antarctic fast ice. These species accounted for at least 90% of the total metazoan abundance at each location. Abundances were high, reaching 175 individuals l-1 (190,000 m-2) for D. glacialis and 660 l-1 (901,000 m-2) for P. antarctica. These abundances were probably partly supported by the high biomass of ice-algae (Pearson correlation coefficient, r=0.75), as indicated by chlorophyll-a concentrations (1.7-10.1 µg l-1). The population structures of each species suggested very different life-history strategies. All developmental stages of D. glacialis were isolated from the ice cores, including females with egg sacs, supporting the hypothesis that this species reproduces in the sea ice during winter. This strategy might assist D. glacialis in leading a continually colonising existence, whereby it responds opportunistically to the availability of favourable habitat patches. The populations of P. antarctica were composed primarily of nauplii (>99%), consistent with past observations of a synchronised life cycle for this species. The strong coupling of the developmental cycle of P. antarctica to the growth and decay of sea ice suggests that local extinctions might occur in areas where ice break-out is unpredictable.  相似文献

Replicate clutches of larvae were swum in a swimming flume at 4, 7, 10, 13, and 16 cm s-1 and the time swum until exhaustion recorded. There was a significant relationship between sustained swimming time and swimming speed for both maximum (R2=0.77; P<0.05) and mean sustained swimming times (R2=0.78; P<0.05), with fish swimming at slower speeds swimming longer and covering greater total distances. The relationship observed agrees with theoretical principles relating increasing swimming speed with increasing drag. We used our data for Amphiprion melanopus, combined with published information, to predict the swimming speeds that other reef fish taxa should be able to maintain for significant lengths of time (12-48 h) using three different models. The results agree well with field estimates (R2 values from 0.45 to 0.84), suggesting that there may be underlying factors influencing swimming ability in reef fish larvae that can be used to predict swimming abilities of different taxa. These models suggest that sustained swimming behaviour by reef fish larvae could have a much greater impact on modifying larval dispersal than previously thought.  相似文献

Large numbers of paralarvae of the California market squid, Loligo opalescens (10,560 paralarvae from 422 plankton samples), were collected in the Southern California Bight in 1999, 2000, and 2001 during the spawning season. Paralarval abundance increased dramatically (P<0.0041) from 1.5 squid/1,000m3 in 1999 to 77.9 squid/1,000m3 in 2000, and 73.6 squid/1,000m3 in 2001, following the El Niño of 1997-1998. The effects on the squid fishery of the 1997-1998 El Niño were thus extended for two years, with larval abundance reduced until the 1999-2000 spawning season. Paralarvae were abundant close to shore for up to a month after hatching in 2000 (P<0.003), with tidal surface currents adjacent to shore in the Channel Islands strongly affecting paralarval abundance. Tidally reversing currents within 1-3 km of shore created a boundary layer of "sticky water" within which paralarvae remained entrained inshore immediately after hatching. Neritic currents farther from shore dispersed older paralarvae within the Southern California Bight. The greatest change in paralarval abundance, for all transects, was observed within 1 km of the transition between these two flow regimes. Age of paralarvae (from statolith increments) entrained within the Catalina Island boundary layer averaged 13-16 days, but some individuals remained nearshore for up to a month. Paralarvae in the boundary layer occurred above 80 m depth both day and night, and exhibited a statistically significant pattern of vertical diel migration (P<0.01). Paralarvae at sea were disproportionately abundant adjacent to fronts associated with uplifted isotherms.  相似文献

Fine mesh enclosures (0.9 m2 in basal area, 1 m high, with 100 µm mesh) and a jet-net retrieval system were developed to test the influence of juvenile prawn stocking density on growth rates in (1) different months (April and October/November) and (2) different types of intertidal seagrass beds in the Embley River estuary of tropical Australia. Small juvenile tiger prawns (3-6 mm in carapace length, CL) were stocked in enclosures at densities of 4-32 prawns per enclosure (4.4-35.5 prawns m-2) on a high biomass seagrass bed (about 70 g m-2 of mostly Enhalus acoroides) and one with low biomass (about 10 g m-2 of mostly Halodule uninervis). After 2-3 weeks in the enclosures, recovery rates, and hence possibly survival, were greater on the high biomass Enhalus than on the low biomass Halodule. However, not all fish and crustaceans could be excluded from the enclosures. Growth rates were twice as fast on the high biomass Enhalus than on the low biomass Halodule. It is likely that the high biomass Enhalus, with its greater surface area, supported more epiphytic flora and fauna and reduced the potential for interference competition between prawns, compared with the low biomass Halodule. Growth rates on Enhalus were significantly faster at a stocking density of 4 prawns per enclosure (1.3 mm CL week-1) than at a stocking density of 16 and 32 prawns per enclosure (both 0.8 mm CL week-1), and did not differ significantly between April and October/November (temperatures were about 30°C at both times). The mean growth rate at 8 prawns per enclosure (1.1 mm CL week-1) did not differ significantly from those at 4, 16 and 32 prawns per enclosure. These results from two seagrass beds suggest that the carrying capacity for juvenile tiger prawns was greater in the high biomass Enhalus than the low biomass Halodule bed.  相似文献

Megalopae (postlarvae) of the blue crab Callinectes sapidus Rathbun use flood-tide transport (FTT) for movement into and up estuaries. Since they settle around the time of slack water at the end of flood tide during FTT, it was predicted that orientation toward primary nursery areas of aquatic vegetation occurs at this time. This study tested the hypotheses that megalopae locate nursery areas by swimming upstream in the presence of chemical odors from potential nursery areas and avoid adverse microhabitats by swimming downstream when predator or adverse environmental odors are present. Megalopae were tested in a flume where they were exposed to the sequence of cues mediating FTT (i.e. 2 psu increase in salinity followed by an increase and a decrease in current speed and turbulence). The flume contained odor water either from the developmental area (offshore water), nursery area vegetation (seagrass, Zostera marina; salt marsh cord grass, Spartina alterniflora), predators (fiddler crab, Uca pugilator; mud crab, Panopeus herbstii; grass shrimp, Palaemonetes pugio), or chemicals associated with adverse environments (ammonium). Vertical positions of premolt and intermolt megalopae were similar in water devoid of estuarine chemical cues (offshore water) and water containing seagrass odor. Upstream swimming behavior (orientation) of intermolt megalopae was also similar in these waters. However, there was an ontogenetic behavioral change, as the proportion of premolt megalopae oriented upstream generally increased as the concentration of seagrass and salt marsh cord grass odor increased and as current speed decreased. Upstream orientation of premolt megalopae in response to seagrass odor decreased significantly (i.e. downstream swimming increased) in the presence of odor from U. pugilator, P. pugio, and ammonium, but not from P. herbstii. Thus, the hypothesis was supported. These results suggest premolt megalopae orient toward nursery areas by swimming upstream in response to odors from aquatic vegetation as current speeds decrease at the end of nocturnal flood tides. Moreover, these results also indicate that megalopae may discriminate among microhabitats and avoid adverse settlement habitat, as orientation toward nursery areas is reversed by predator odors and ammonium.  相似文献

Life-history traits of Plesionika martia (Milne Edwards, 1883) were studied through data collected during six seasonal trawl surveys carried out in the Ionian Sea (eastern-central Mediterranean) between July 1997 and September 1998. P. martia was found at between 304 and 676 m depth, with the highest density in the 400-600 m range. Intraspecific, size-related depth segregation was shown. Recruitment occurred in summer at the shallowest depths. Juveniles moved to the deepest grounds as they grew. The largest female and male were 26 and 25 mm carapace length, respectively. The sex ratio was slightly in favour of females at depths >400 m. Although a seasonal spawning peak was shown, the reproduction appears to be rather prolonged throughout the year. Females with ripe gonads were found from spring to autumn. Ovigerous females with eggs in late maturity stage were found year round. Large females could spawn more than one time within their annual reproductive cycle. The size at first maturity (50% of the ovigerous females) was 15.5 mm CL. Average brood size of eggs with a well-developed embryo was 2,966ǃ,521. Iteroparity, low fecundity and large egg size patterns were observed. Brood size increased according to the carapace length. Two main annual groups were found in the field population of the Ionian Sea. Estimates of the Von Bertalanffy growth parameters are: LX=30.5 mm, k=0.44 year-1 in females; LX=28.0 mm, k=0.50 year-1 in males. A negative allometry was detected mostly in the ovigerous females. The life cycle of P. martia is discussed in the light of life-history adaptations shown in other deep-water shrimp species.  相似文献

As a top-level predator, the brown grouper Epinephelus marginatus can play an important role in maintaining the ecological balance of hard-bottom ecosystems. However, to fulfil this role, the species must have a sufficient population density and a wide size range. The presence of such a "healthy" grouper population is one of the known benefits of the protection measures applied to marine protected areas. The availability, in marine reserves, of areas suitable for settlement and recruitment of early juveniles can contribute to preserving a well-structured population. Thus, knowledge of microhabitats preferred by juvenile groupers is an important step in locating, within protected or not yet protected areas, nursery sites that might need a specific protection regime. The aim of the present work was to evaluate habitat and microhabitat preferences of juvenile E. marginatus, in comparison with two other serranids of comparable size, Serranus cabrilla and S. scriba, in the marine reserve of Ustica Island (SW Mediterranean). At different sites, located along the shallow coastal area of the reserve, 329 individuals of the three serranid species were visually surveyed by means of skin- or SCUBA-diving in June 1999. The location of each encountered fish was characterised by both biotic and abiotic variables evaluated at two spatial scales. In order to assess interspecific differences in the use of the spatial environment, the results were analysed by correspondence analysis. According to observations on a small spatial scale, juvenile groupers showed a preference for cavities and recesses, in clear contrast with both Serranus species. When out of such sheltered places, juvenile groupers avoided visually exposed locations (convex substrates and very large visual fields), preferring flat or sub-horizontal rocky substrates. Conversely, S. scriba, and especially S. cabrilla, chose rather open microhabitats (flat to convex substrates, with large to very large visual fields). On a larger spatial scale, brown groupers and the two other serranids showed no marked differences in their habitat preferences.  相似文献

Declining trends in the abundance of many fish urgently call for more efficient and informative monitoring methods that would provide necessary demographic data for the evaluation of existing conservation, restoration, and management actions. We investigated how genetic sibship reconstruction from young‐of‐the‐year brown trout (Salmo trutta L.) juveniles provides valuable, complementary demographic information that allowed us to disentangle the effects of habitat quality and number of breeders on juvenile density. We studied restored (n = 15) and control (n = 15) spawning and nursery habitats in 16 brown trout rivers and streams over 2 consecutive years to evaluate the effectiveness of habitat restoration activities. Similar juvenile densities both in restored and control spawning and nursery grounds were observed. Similarly, no differences in the effective number of breeders, Nb(SA), were detected between habitats, indicating that brown trout readily used recently restored spawning grounds. Only a weak relationship between the Nb(SA) and juvenile density was observed, suggesting that multiple factors affect juvenile abundance. In some areas, very low estimates of Nb(SA) were found at sites with high juvenile density, indicating that a small number of breeders can produce a high number of progeny in favorable conditions. In other sites, high Nb(SA) estimates were associated with low juvenile density, suggesting low habitat quality or lack of suitable spawning substrate in relation to available breeders. Based on these results, we recommend the incorporation of genetic sibship reconstruction to ongoing and future fish evaluation and monitoring programs to gain novel insights into local demographic and evolutionary processes relevant for fisheries management, habitat restoration, and conservation.  相似文献

The process of reproductive maturation and egg release was examined in the temperate shelf squid Nototodarus gouldi. The energy allocation between somatic and reproductive growth from juvenile to mature adult was investigated throughout the life span to determine the underlying energetic strategy adopted by individuals. The relative weight of the mantle, fin and digestive gland remained unchanged during ovarian development, with no significant correlations found between the mantle length (ML)-gonad residuals and the ML-mantle (r=0.01, P>0.05), ML-fin (r=0.07, P>0.05) and ML-digestive gland (r=0.07, P>0.05) residuals. This suggested that energy was not being diverted away from somatic growth during sexual development, and consequently neither muscle nor digestive gland was being utilised as an energy store. Since squid in all maturity stages contained some food in their stomachs (e.g. 66.7% of mature animals), it is likely that the cost of maturation in this species is largely being met by food intake. The energy investment in reproductive tissues was relatively low (mean gonado-somatic index for mature individuals was 9.29% - 0.40%), indicating that only small amounts of energy were being allocated to reproduction at anyone point in time, which is characteristic of a multiple-spawning strategy. Furthermore, oviduct weight was not correlated with body size (r=0.256, P>0.05), suggesting that eggs are not stored for a single release. In all except one individual, ovary weight was consistently heavier than oviduct weight, suggesting that the ovary is not being depleted of oocytes as mature ova move into the oviducts. Additionally, the ovaries of mature females contained a range of oocyte sizes with discrete peaks, indicating a continued production and development of oocyte cohorts. The presence of some individuals with stretched empty oviducts is further evidence that the reproductive strategy of N. gouldi is slow and steady, with eggs possibly being released in discrete batches over a period of time.  相似文献

During three "Polarstern" cruises to the ice-covered Greenland Sea (spring 1997, summer 1994, autumn 1995) studies on the under-ice habitat (morphology, hydrography, ice-algal biomass) and on the macrofaunal, autochthonous under-ice amphipods (species diversity, abundance) were carried out in order to describe environmental controls and seasonal patterns in this community. In spring, the ice underside was rather smooth and whitish, while in summer melting structures and sloughed-off ice-algal threads were observed, in autumn detritus clumps accumulated in depressions at the ice underside. Only in summer, a thin layer of warm (up to -0.6°C) and less saline (as low as S=6.3) water was found at the ice-water interface above Polar Water. Integrated ice-algal biomass was highest during autumn (2.6 mg chl a m-2) and lowest during summer (1.2 mg chl a m-2). Four species of under-ice amphipods occurred in spring and summer (Apherusa glacialis, Onisimus glacialis, O. nanseni, Gammarus wilkitzkii), but only the last species was observed at the ice underside in autumn. A. glacialis and G. wilkitzkii were equally abundant in spring; A. glacialis dominated in summer. The highest total abundance of amphipods occurred during summer (31.9 ind. m-2), compared to lower abundances in spring and autumn (5.3 and 1.1 ind. m-2, respectively). A factor analysis revealed seasonal patterns in the data set, which mainly influenced A. glacialis, and species-specific relations between several environmental factors and the distribution of under-ice amphipods. Abundance of A. glacialis was closely related to the under-ice hydrography and ice-algal biomass, whereas the other amphipod species were more influenced by the under-ice morphology. It is therefore stated that the observed thinning of the Arctic sea ice and the resulting increased meltwater input and change in morphology of floes will have a profoundly adverse effect on the under-ice amphipods.  相似文献

The investigation was carried out from 62°N to 73°N and from 14°E to 11°W in the Norwegian Sea during 19 June-12 July 1997. Regional differences in the phase of the seasonal development of the plankton community were evident, most pronounced across the Arctic front. In the Coastal and eastern Atlantic domains, post-bloom conditions prevailed, characterised by low chlorophyll a (chl a) levels and a phytoplankton assemblage dominated by coccolithophorids and small flagellates. During the study period, egg production rates of Calanus finmarchicus were low (<10 eggs female-1 day-1), older copepodite stages dominated, and the seasonal descent to deeper waters had started. In the Arctic domain, bloom conditions were evident by high chl a levels and a high abundance of large diatoms. Egg production rates were higher (a maximum of 29 eggs female-1 day-1), but the dominance of stages CI-CIII indicated that considerable spawning had already occurred prior to the spring bloom. The seasonal descent had barely started. Both invertebrate and fish predators were most abundant in the Coastal and eastern Atlantic domains, with abundance strongly decreasing north-westwards. No tight relationship between total abundance of invertebrate or fish predators and that of C. finmarchicus was apparent. However, a weak, but significant, relationship between abundance of young stages of chaetognaths and Euchaeta spp. versus young stages of C. finmarchicus was found, indicating that these invertebrate predators develop parallel to the development of the new cohort of C. finmarchicus. In early summer, C. finmarchicus had reached overwintering stages, and had started to accumulate in deeper waters in areas with the highest abundance of horizontally migratory planktivorous fish.  相似文献

In this study, spatial and vertical distributions of the invasive ctenophore Mnemiopsis leidyi in the Caspian Sea were evaluated by using data collected at 41 stations during the August 2001 cruise. A comparison of data from different depths revealed that M. leidyi were generally confined to surface waters. The maximum size of the ctenophore was only 41-45 mm, and the bulk of individuals (85.5%) were <10 mm in length. The average and maximum biomasses of M. leidyi were calculated as 120 and 351 g wet weight m-2, respectively. Whilst highest biomasses were observed in the western and central Middle Caspian Sea, hot spot areas of reproduction were present along the coasts of the western Caspian Sea, with abundance values of up to 2285 ind. m-2. The impact of such high densities of M. leidyi is expected to be significant for the pelagic ecosystem of the Caspian Sea.  相似文献

This article describes the life-history strategy of the blue sprat Spratelloides robustus in South Australia and compares the demographic traits observed with those of other clupeoids. Validation studies that involved marking the sagittae of captive fish with oxy-tetracycline suggested that growth increments are deposited daily. The oldest fish examined was 82 mm caudal fork length and 241 days old, which suggests S. robustus may live for less than 1 year. Growth rates were high during larval stages (0.34 mm dayу) and remained high throughout juvenile (0.33 mm dayу) and adult stages (0.19 mm dayу). S. robustus reached 50% maturity at approximately 60 mm caudal fork length after approximately 135 days. Spawning occurred from October to February (spring to late summer) and larvae were found mainly in Spencer Gulf, Gulf St Vincent, and Investigator Strait. Females spawned multiple batches of demersal eggs every 1-2 days. Batch fecundities were low (mean=756, SD=341) and increased linearly with length and weight. The life history of S. robustus is dissimilar to other small to medium-sized temperate clupeoids, but similar to those of many small sub-tropical and tropical clupeoids, including other Spratelloides species. Gulf St Vincent and Spencer Gulf may be considered to be "seasonally subtropical systems" in an otherwise temperate region that support a suite of species, including S. robustus, that have life-history strategies similar to those of sub-topical and tropical taxa.  相似文献

The effects of exposure to sediment-associated tri-n-butyltin chloride (TBTCl) were examined in the euryhaline European flounder, Platichthys flesus (L.). The effects were quantified by measuring the changes in sodium efflux; Na+/K+-ATPase activity; and the numbers, areas, and distribution of chloride cells in the gills of freshwater-adapted fish, following a rapid transfer to seawater. Following the transfer to seawater, the Na+/K+-ATPase activity and the sodium efflux were significantly increased in the control group but remained unchanged in the TBTCl-exposed group. The normal morphological changes to the gill epithelium associated with seawater adaptation, which involve chloride cell distribution, took place in the control group but were significantly inhibited or delayed in the TBTCl group. The results presented in this study lead to the conclusion that environmental concentrations of tri-n-butyltin chloride in sediments are capable of significantly disrupting both the physiological and the morphological components of iono-regulatory functions of an estuarine flatfish.  相似文献

Patterns of genetic diversity of the marine deep-water redfish, Sebastes mentella Travin, from 21 sampling locations (n=46 per sample, from 1995 to 1998) were examined throughout its range in the North Atlantic. Eight microsatellite loci were used in order to: (1) define the genetic structure and consider the possible influence of dispersal, geographic distance, oceanic currents and historical factors; and (2) relate the structure to present management units and practices. Three divergent population units (mean Š=0.012) associated with distinct geographic areas were defined: Eastern (Norway and Barents Sea), Panoceanic and Western (Gulf of St. Lawrence and offshore Newfoundland). The most important observation was the lack of genetic differences (mean Š=-0.0004) and lack of genetic isolation by geographic distance (r=0.318, P=0.112) among samples within the Panoceanic zone, from the Faroe Islands to the Grand Banks (6,000 km). A combination of vicariance, historical introgression with a closely related species, S. fasciatus, and contemporary patterns of oceanic circulation are likely to have shaped the observed population structure. These results only partially support current management units, and call for more integrated practices for regulating the exploitation of S. mentella throughout its extensive range.  相似文献
