The ratios of polyunsaturated fatty acids in the lipids of hatchery-reared plaice [Pleuronectes platessa (L.)] maintained on a diet containing corn oil and freeze-dried cod muscle accurately reflect ratios of polyunsaturated fatty acids in the diet. Such plaice have much greater levels of triglycerides in both their livers and extrahepatic tissues than wild plaice of comparable size; the total amount of 22:6 3 acid in triglycerides of the two groups is, however, very similar. Transfer of experimental plaice to a fat-free diet caused a marked depletion of triglycerides from both livers and extrahepatic tissues with almost all fatty acids being reduced in amount. Addition of 12:0 and 14:0 ethyl esters (4% of each) to the fat-free diet caused some accumulation of triglycerides in extrahepatic tissues. Further addition of 18:2 6 and 18:3 3 acids (both at levels of 0.4%) to the diet caused an accumulation of triglycerides in the liver. These triglycerides had increased levels of saturated and monounsaturated fatty acids up to C 18 but the levels of higher polyunsaturated fatty acids were not inereased. There was relatively little change in the fatty acids of phospholipids throughout these experimental dietary regimes. The levels of phospholipids were constant and very similar to those of wild plaice. The results indicate: (1) plaice fed a diet relatively low in 22:6 3 acid may accumulate relatively large amounts of triglyceride in order to store adequate amounts of 22:6 3 acid; (2) plaice are capable of synthesising saturated and mono-unsaturated fatty acids up to C 18 in the presence of dietary 12:0 and 14:0 acids; (3) 18:2 6 and 18:3 3 acids in the diet do not undergo chain elongation and further desaturation in plaice with the dietary regimes we used.  相似文献

A 6-week feeding trial was conducted with 44-d-old European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax L.) in order to examine the effect of various dietary phospholipid (PL) sources on the incorporation of n-3 highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFA) in tissue lipids. From weaning onwards the fish received diets prepared by coating different lipid fractions (7.5% diet) on an extruded basal diet (92.5% diet). The two PL-free control diets contained 0.5 and 2% of an emulsifier blend, respectively. Seven other diets contained 2% PL, differing by their purity and origin (vegetable or animal). All diets were rendered isolipidic by the addition of hydrogenated coconut oil. Feeding the PL-supplemented diets, except the diet containing hydrolyzed soybean PL (lyso PL), resulted in a higher survival and a 10 to 30% better growth as compared to the PL-free diets. No difference according to the PL origin was observed. The sea bass final lipid content increased with increasing body weight. Also the lipid class composition of the fish was clearly correlated with the final weight gain. Total neutral lipid increased from 51% of total lipid (initial fish) to 76% for fish fed the PL-free diets, and up to 88% for fish fed the sunflower PL. Weaning the fish on the experimental diets induced important changes in their fatty acid profiles characterized by a decrease in 18:3n-3, 20:5n-3 and 20:4n-6 and an increase in saturated fatty acids and 22:6n-3 (DHA). According to the fatty acid composition of both total and polar lipid, the weaned fish could be divided into three groups reflecting the dietary fatty acids: a group fed the vegetable PL, a group fed the animal PL and a PL-deprived group. An effect of dietary PL on the incorporation of dietary n-3 HUFA, more particularly DHA, was noticed. For a similar supply of DHA through the neutral lipids in the diet, fish fed PL-supplemented diets (except for the lyso PL diet) had 10 to 25% higher DHA levels in total and polar lipid than PL-deprived fish. This PL effect was already clear at the end of the weaning and was not related to the presence of n-3 HUFA in the PL source, as suspected in a previous study when feeding egg yolk PL. A better incorporation of DHA was not obtained by replacing the PL by an emulsifier or by lyso PL with higher emulsifying properties. Present results confirm a role of dietary PL in the absorption of dietary neutral lipids, by a mechanism other than emulsification. Received: 27 May 1997 / Accepted: 30 June 1997  相似文献

The growth of 0-group Pleuronectes platessa L. on diets containing plant proteins was examined. Diets were made acceptable to the fish by including in them cod flesh which had been predigested with proteolytic enzymes, as well as a proportion of air-dried cod meal. A leaf-protein concentrate was fed at 6 levels ranging from 0 to 63 % of the total dietary protein; B.P. protein concentrate (Toprina) and soyabean meal were examined at a single level — about 45 % of the dietary protein. The remainder of the protein in these diets was animal protein, cod meal or cod flesh. Analysis of the weight gains after a 12 week feeding period and of the growth curves showed that, as the proportion of leaf protein in the diet increased, the growth rate diminished, the effect becoming more pronounced when leaf protein reached 40 % or more of the dietary protein. Growth on the diet containing B.P. protein concentrate was superior to that on the diet containing soyabean meal and was comparable with diets containing low levels of leaf protein. The protein efficiency ratios (PER= g live weight gain/g protein fed) for the different diets showed similar trends to the growth rates. Diets containing 40 % or less of leaf protein and the B.P. protein diet had PERs of 1.4 to 1.5. The soyabean meal diet and diets containing more than 40 % of the protein as leaf protein had PERs of 1.0 or less. The results are considered in the context of production diets for flatfish.  相似文献

Sticklebacks (Gasterosteus aculeatus) from a brackish water and a freshwater population were compared immediately after removal from their habitat and after being maintained in the laboratory. Glutamate dehydrogenase activities in the liver and both lactate dehydrogenase and aspartate aminotransferase activities in the axial muscle were higher in the brackish water sticklebacks than in the freshwater specimens. Liver glutamate dehydrogenase activities were higher in males than in females, whereas lactate dehydrogenase activities were distinctly higher in females. A significant positive correlation was found between size and both aspartate aminotransferase and lactate dehydrogenase. The population-specific activities of muscle enzymes are interpreted as an example of evolutionary adaptation of enzyme regulation. Received: 28 February 1997 / Accepted: 5 August 1997  相似文献

The activities of some enzymes of the intermediary metabolism and the content of soluble protein and carbohydrate (glycogen plus free glucose) were measured in one type of coelomic cells (eleocytes) of the polychaete Nereis virens. Specimens used in this study were collected between 1989 and 1991 in Oosterscheldt Bay, The Netherlands, and divided into six different stages of sexual maturation as determined by the mean oocyte volume. In both sexes, the soluble protein content in eleocytes of immature individuals (11 mg ml–1 cell vol) increased three-fold. In prespawning N. virens the soluble protein content decreased to less than 2 mg protein ml–1 cell vol in females but not in males. In both sexes, the carbohydrate content decreased continuously from immature [300 mol glucose equivalent (equiv) ml–1 cell vol] to prespawning individuals (< 40 mol glucose equiv ml–1 cell vol). During the time course of maturation, the specific activities (expressed as units mg–1 protein) of pyruvate kinase, phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase, malate dehydrogenase, alanine aminotransferase and glutamate dehydrogenase decreased in both sexes. A transient increase in the specific activities was found for glycogen phosphorylase and aspartate aminotransferase. No major changes were found for hexokinase, lactase dehydrogenase, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase and malic enzyme. Sex specific differences were found for the activities of citrate synthase and isocitrate dehydrogenase, which were higher in males. the specific activities of the latter enzyme increased more than ten-fold in males, but only four-fold in female eleocytes during maturation. In eleocytes of prespawning females, the activities of most enzymes showed extremely high variations not found in prespawning males. For two enzymes of fatty acid catabolism, -hydroxyacyl-CoA dehydrogenase and -hydroxybutyrate dehydrogenase, only traces of activities were detected, suggesting the absence of significant fatty acid catabolism in the eleocytes. Compared to the eleocytes, the body wall tissue showed ten-fold higher activities of phosphofructokinase, whereas the eleocytes displayed higher activities of the amino acid interconverting enzymes glutamate dehydrogenase and alanine aminotransferase and the glyconeogenic enzyme phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase. Citrate synthase activities were similar for both tissues. In the coelomic fluid of N. virens, glucose (< 0.1 to 3.5 mM) and d-lactate (0.1 to 4 mM) were present and represent exogenous substrates for the eleocyte metabolism.  相似文献

The fatty-acid composition of lipids from ovulated eggs of wild and cultured turbot was investigated in order to estimate the nutritional requirements during embryonic and early larval development. Lipid comprised 13.8±0.5% (n=5) and 13.2±0.7% (n=7) of the egg dry weight in wild and cultured turbot, respectively. Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) of the (n-3) series accounted for 39% of total fatty acids in total lipid of both wild and cultured fish. The predominant (n-3) FUFA was docosahexaenoic acid (22:6 n-3), which also was the most abundant fatty acid in turbot eggs and comprised 24 and 23% of the total egg fatty acids in wild and cultured fish, respectively. Phospholipids, triacylglycerols and cholesterol-wax esters of turbot eggs all exhibited a specific fatty-acid profile distinctly different from that of total lipid. The general pattern of the fatty-acid distribution in lipids of eggs from wild and cultured turbot was similar, but the relative amount of 18:2(n-6) was considerably higher and 20:1(n-9) slightly higher in cultured fish. These differences were extended to all lipid classes and probably reflect the dietary intake of certain vegetable and marine fish oils. Calculations based on light microscopical studies showed that 55 to 60% of the total lipids in cultured turbot eggs are confined to the oil globule. The size of the oil globule remained constant during embryogenesis, and a reduction in size occurred first after hatching and mainly after yolk depletion. This implies that the total amount of lipids utilised during the embryonic development is considerably less than the total lipids present in ovulated turbot eggs. Comparison of the fatty-acid composition of total lipids from eggs and vitellogenin of wild turbot reveals that egg lipids contained a lower level of saturated and a higher level of monounsaturated fatty acids. Eggs also contained wax esters, which were not detected in vitellogenin, suggesting that vitellogenin is not the only source of lipids for turbot eggs.  相似文献

An examination was made of the stomach contents of the larvae of the plaice Pleuronectes platessa Linnaeus, 1758; the flounder Platichthys flesus (Linnaeus, 1758), the dab Limanda limanda (Linnaeus, 1758), and the sole Solea solea (Linnaeus, 1758) collected in the eastern English Channel and in the Southern Bight during the winter and spring of 1971. These 4 species of flat fish have distinct diets, and competition for food between them is largely avoided. Plaice larvae fed almost exclusively on Oikopleura dioica; flounder larvae also ate O. dioica, but in addition a wide range of planktonic organisms including phytoplankton, polychaete larvae, lamellibranch larvae, and copepod nauplii. Dab larvae fed mainly on the nauplii and copepodite stages of a variety of copepods, but particularly of Temora longicornis. Some T. longicornis copepodites and polychaete larvae were eaten by sole larvae, but the principal prey of these was lamellibranch larvae. The larvae of all the species began to feed in the yolk-sac stage; the initial food of all except plaice consisted of dino-flagellates, followed by tintinnids and copepod nauplii. Feeding began at dawn and the number of feeding fish and the number of food organisms in their stomachs increased throughout the day to a maximum near sunset. There were no consistent differences between the two areas in the diets of any of the species.  相似文献

In order to estimate growth rates based on biochemical indices of the liver of wild Japanese flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus), juveniles were reared at six ration levels (0, 0.5, 2, 4, 6 and 8% body weight day−1) in the laboratory for 14 days, and the relationship between their growth rates and biochemical indices (RNA/DNA, protein/DNA, triglyceride/DNA, phospholipid/DNA and cathepsin D activities) were determined. Positive and approximately linear relationships were seen between growth rates and the indices of RNA/DNA, protein/DNA and phospholipid/DNA. The triglyceride/DNA ratio decreased with increasing growth rates up to approximately 1% body weight day−1, then increased linearly with increasing growth rates. There was no significant correlation between growth rates and cathepsin D activity, and the highest values were obtained in the starved fish. Compared with laboratory-reared specimens, wild specimens of similar sizes were found to have significantly larger livers. The RNA/DNA, protein/DNA and phospholipid/DNA ratios of wild specimens fell in a broad range between ration groups of reared juveniles. The protein/DNA ratios of wild specimens were low and outside the range of the reared juveniles at six ration levels. In contrast, the levels of cathepsin D activity of wild fish were highest compared to the reared fish. Estimated growth rates of wild fish from the RNA/DNA, protein/DNA and phospholipid/DNA regressions obtained from the rearing experiment were 1.66, −1.74 and 0.10% day−1, respectively. Based on our results, the RNA/DNA index may be regarded as the most valid and reliable growth estimator. It is noted that the larger liver size, the lower liver protein/DNA ratio and the unexpectedly high level of cathepsin D activities of wild specimens found in this study may reflect the different metabolic conditions of fish reared in the laboratory compared to those collected in the field. Experiments were conducted to determine the effects of excess dietary cobalt (Co) on bioaccumulation, digestive enzyme activities, and growth in freshwater Cyprinus carpio. Four isonitrogenous diets (average crude protein: 35%) were formulated to prepare a control diet (T1) with no Co, and three Co-supplemented diets with 1 (T2), 1.5 (T3), or 2 (T4)% Co. The results showed that C. carpio fed with T3 diet showed maximal apparent protein digestibility, feed conversion, protein utilization, and growth. Protease and lipase activities were maximal in the fish group given T3 diet. Accumulation of Co in different soft and hard tissues of fish did not correlate with levels of Co in the diet. The concentration of Co in the water increased with dietary level, being at a disturbing adverse effect level at 2% dietary Co. Evidence indicates that an additional supply of dietary Co up to a level of 1.5% is a viable option to augment growth of C. carpio, but at higher levels of Co it may be detrimental to fish health and the aquatic ecosystem.  相似文献

Male albino rats were fed for 28 days from weaning on diets containing 5% (group 1), 10% (group 2) and 21% (group 3, normal protein) protein as casein. At the end of dietary period, HCH was administered daily for 30 days to investigate the interaction between protein deficiency and pesticide toxicity. The results indicated that rats fed a lower protein diet and HCH had a higher mortality, lower rate of growth, increased liver weight and deposition of the pesticide in blood and tissues in larger amounts. Blood pressure (systolic and diastolic) was significantly increased and the heart rate showed tachycardia in low protein exposed animals. A significant increase of total lipids, cholesterol, triglycirides, free fatty acids in serum and tissues of animals exposed to low protein was observed. A close correlation existed between lipid accumulation and storage of HCH in tissues and dietary protein seemed to play an important role in detoxification.  相似文献

Experiments were conducted to determine the effects of excess dietary cobalt (Co) on its bioaccumulation, on digestive enzyme activities, and on the growth of freshwater catfish Heteropneustes fossilis (Bloch). Four isonitrogenous diets (average crude protein: 32.7%) were formulated to prepare a control diet (T1) with no Co, and three Co-supplemented diets with 0.05 (T2), 0.1 (T3), and 1.0 (T4)% Co. The results showed that H. fossilis fed with T3 diet showed maximum apparent protein digestibility, feed conversion, protein utilization, and growth. Protease and lipase activities were also maximum in T3 diet. Accumulation of Co in different soft and hard tissues of the fish did not show any correlation with the level of Co in the diet. The concentration of Co in the water increased with its dietary level, being at an alarming level at 1.0% dietary Co. It is concluded that an additional supply of dietary Co up to a level of 0.1% is a viable option to augment growth of the catfish H. fossilis, but at higher levels of Co it may be detrimental to the fish and the aquatic ecosystem.  相似文献

Feeding deltamethrin-contaminated grains to domestic poultry, such as quails may result in toxic effects in these birds. This study was done to investigate the effects of recommended doses of deltamethrin, sometimes used in grain storage silos, on Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica). Quails were fed grains contaminated with 0.25 and 0.50 mg deltamethrin per kg diet for 21 days and the effects on survival and blood biochemical parameters were studied. Plasma uric acid, creatinine levels, and creatinine phosphokinase activity in the blood were increased. Aspartate aminotransferase and lactate dehydrogenase activities and glucose levels significantly increased in birds treated with the high dose of deltamethrin. Alanine aminotransferase activity and albumin or cholesterol levels were not changed, and acetylcholinesterase and alkaline phosphatase activities, total protein and globulin in plasma were decreased. Administration of 0.25 mg/kg deltamethrin caused increased blood triglyceride levels, 0.50 mg/kg deltamethrin decreased triglyceride levels.  相似文献

The subcellular distribution of 237Pu in the livers of the plaice Pleuronectes platessa has been studied by differential and isopycnic gradient centrifugation. It has been shown that the 237Pu is particularly accumulated in pellets sedimenting out at 3000 and 6000 g which, by deduction from marker enzyme tests, contain a mixture of mitochondria and lysosomes. Separation of lysosomes from mitochondria was achieved by using a non-lytic detergent injected into the fish 3 d prior to removal of the livers; it was found that 237Pu was associated with the lysosomal fraction. In this respect, the metabolism of plutonium of the plaice resembles that of the rat.  相似文献

An adequate human diet should satisfy the requirements for energy and nutritive components including essential polyunsaturated fatty acids, essential amino acids, mineral components, vitamins, and fat. The benefits of the fish consumption are, however, often counteracted by toxic metals such as lead present in fish meat. Adverse effects of toxic metals on the aquatic environment and human health have aroused increasing interest in recent years. The achievement of an appropriate balance between the risks and benefits associated with fish consumption has therefore become a key health issue in current research. Therefore, we studied health impacts associated with the consumption of sardine fish, one of the most commonly consumed fish species throughout the world. Hepatic damages associated with the consumption of white or red muscle of sardine fish were explored and evaluated using a rat model. Rats were fed for 60 days with white or red sardine meat. Findings revealed (1) an elevated level of uric acid in the blood, (2) an accumulation of lead in the liver, (3) an atrophy of the liver, (4) an increase in plasma aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase activities, and (5) an oxidative stress in the liver, including increased levels of lipid peroxidation and enhanced activities of superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase. Several abnormalities were also observed in liver histology. The alterations observed in the animals can be attributed to both the accumulation of lead and the high levels of purine in the sardine meat. The findings show that special attention should be given to the health effects associated with high intakes of sardine meat, particularly dark-meat sardine.  相似文献

Two organic compounds, diethylstilboestrol a synthetic oestrogen substitute, and cyproheptadine which acts as an appetite stimulant in some mammals, were added separately at 3 different concentrations to diets fed to plaice (Pleuronectes platessa), and their effect on growth examined. Over a 10 week period, low orally-administered diethylstilboestrol (600 g/kg moist diet) gave rise to increased weight gain, food consumption and food conversion. Higher dietary concentrations of diethylstilboestrol (up to 2400 g/kg diet) were without effect on these parameters. Cyproheptadine did not stimulate appetite, weight gain or food conversion at any of the levels tested. With an Appendix on Statistics by J. A. Pope and A. M. Shanks  相似文献

Eggs of the plaice Pleuronectes platessa L. were incubated at temperatures of 5, 8, 10, 12 and 15°C in March 1990, 1991 and 1992. The myotomes of yolk-sac larvae contain a single superficial layer of small-diameter muscle fibres which stain intensely for succinic dehydrogenase activity, surrounding 390 to 500 weakly staining inner-muscle fibres of larger diameter. Larvae reared at 15°C only survived for a few days and had significantly more inner-muscle fibres of larger average cross-sectional area than those hatching at 5 to 10°C. Myofibrils occupied 61% of the volume of inner-muscle fibres in 15°C larvae compared with 35 and 36% in larvae hatching at 5 and 10°C, respectively (P(0.01). Following metamorphosis, which occurs between 7 and 10 wk, the myotomes retain the single layer of superficial-muscle fibres characteristic of larvae. A thickening of the superficial-muscle layer is first evident in 4 to 5 mo-old laboratory-reared fish of 20 mm total length (TL) and in 0-group fish caught in June and July. On the basis of the histochemical staining reactions for myofibrillar ATPase and succinic dehydrogenase activities, the myotomes of 1-group (104 mm TL) and adult (280 mm TL) plaice were found to contain a minimum of six distinct muscle-fibre types. Two-dimensional gel electrophoresis and peptide mapping were used to investigate changes in myosin subunit composition during development. Myosin from the inner muscle of larvae contains two isoforms of the phosphorylatable light-chain 2 (LC2L1 and LC2L2). Following metamorphosis and during the first year, inner-muscle fibres co-express LC2 isoforms characteristic of the superficial fast-muscle fibres of adult plaice (LC2F1 and LC2F2) in addition to the larval isoforms. Fast-muscle fibres isolated from deep layers of the myotomes in adult plaice only contain LC2F2. In contrast, myosin from larval muscle and adult fast muscle contain apparently identical alkali light chains (LC1 and LC3). Peptide maps of myosin heavy chains (MHCs) from 6 wk-old larvae and 10 wk-old fish that had completed metamorphosis are similar, but distinct from those of 1-group plaice. Further changes in white-muscle MHC composition are evident between 1-group fish of 104 mm TL and adults of 280 mm TL.  相似文献

Knowledge of the structure and energy reserves, in the liver of commercially important fish species, is important in understanding metabolic processes and in assessing the impact of potential environmental physical and chemical stressors in both wild and cultured stocks. The present study investigated the microscopic morphology and histochemistry (total and neutral lipids, glycogen) of liver tissue of wild (3 +) and cultured (1 +) sexually immature female and male yellowtail flounder ( Limanda ferruginea Storer), sampled in late April 2001. Hepatosomatic indices [HSI: (liver weight/body weight-liver weight)×100] of cultured fish were significantly higher than those of wild fish. Females in the cultured group had significantly lower HSIs than males. The liver of both wild and cultured L. ferruginea was interspersed with pancreatic tissue. The main components of the liver tissue were irregular cords of hepatocytes arranged in tubules which surrounded vascular sinusoids. The hepatocytes contained an abundance of lipid, much of which appeared to be neutral lipids, in both sexes of the cultured fish. Total and neutral lipid droplets were larger, and the area occupied by these droplets was significantly greater in both cultured females and males compared to the wild fish, suggesting lipidosis in the cultured fish. In the cultured fish these differences were sex-dependent, the females having significantly more total and neutral lipids in hepatocytes than the males. This suggests a potentially greater storage capacity in females and/or a higher lipid metabolism in males. There were no statistically significant differences in glycogen content between the cultured and wild fish, or between the sexes in both sampling groups.  相似文献

Although laboratory studies of the effects of temperature, salinity, and diet on biological membranes of fish indicate substantial alterations in phospholipid and fatty acid composition to maintain functional properties, there are few parallel studies of wild populations. We, therefore, examined the red muscle, mitochondrial phospholipids and phospholipid fatty acids in two fish populations differing in their environmental temperature, salinity, and diet. Sea-run and freshwater (land-locked) Arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus L.) were collected from Igloolik Island, Northwest Territories, Canada, in the summer of 1991. Several differences between the phospholipids of these fish, and those reported for red muscle mitochondria in other fish species, included a higher cardiolipin content and a higher proportion of short-chain monoenes, especially 16:1. In congruence with previous studies of changes in cardiolipin fatty acids in other species of cold-acclimated fish, the fatty acid content of cardiolipin of both Arctic char groups was more saturated and less polyunsaturated than in warm-acclimated fish. Other aspects of the lipid composition of these membranes were not consistent with laboratory studies of cold-acclimated fish. For example, the fatty acids comprising phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphatidylcholine were more saturated than would be predicted based on laboratory studies of cold-acclimated fish. Some of these differences may be attributable to differences in the proportions of dietary n3 and n6 fatty acids in freshwater and marine environments. A strategy common to both groups of Arctic char is the maintenance of a similar relationship between phospholipid fatty acid chain length and degree of unsaturation in both Arctic char populations in spite of differences in diet and thermal regimes. The observed differences in membrane composition between land-locked and sea-run fish presumably act to maintain mitochondrial function in these different environments. Bones contain the majority of body lipid in some marine fish. In the sheepshead wrasse Pimelometopon pulchrum and the sablefish Anoplopoma fimbria, the bone lipid comprised 79 to 93% and 52 to 82% of the total body lipid, respectively. The senorita Oxyjulus california, another species of wrasse, has only 14% of its body lipid in bone. To determine whether dietary lipid is deposited quickly in the bone lipid, three species of fish were fed 1-14C-palmitic acid. Radioactivity appeared in the bone lipid as soon as 12 h after feeding, with the species rich in bone lipid incorporating the highest activity relative to the flesh. Roughly 80% of the radioactivity recovered in A. fimbria bone lipid was found in triglyceride. Radioactivity was equally distributed between phospholipid and triglyceride in P. pulchrum bone lipids. The results suggest that in some marine fish the bones contain the majority of the organism's reserve energy.  相似文献

Fatty acid analysis is an alternative dietary investigation tool that complements the more traditional techniques of stomach content and faecal analysis that are often subject to a wide range of biases. In applying fatty acid analysis to ecosystem studies, it is important to have an understanding of the effect diet has on the fatty acid profile of the predator. A feeding experiment, using crustacean and fish as prey for the European cuttlefish Sepia officinalis, was conducted to evaluate the effect of prey fatty acids on the fatty acid profile of this marine predator. Cuttlefish were fed on a fish diet for the first 29 days, and then changed to a crustacean diet for a further 28 days. Another group of cuttlefish was fed on a crustacean diet for the first 29 days, and then changed to a fish diet for a further 28 days. An analysis of the cuttlefish digestive gland showed that the fatty acid profile reflected that of the prey, with cuttlefish on a crustacean diet being clearly distinguishable from the cuttlefish on a fish diet. Cuttlefish fed on a fish diet for 29 days prior to the switch in diet were comparatively higher in 16:0, AA, 20:1ω9, DPA6, DHA, 22:4ω6 and DPA3 than those fed on crustaceans. Cuttlefish fed on a crustacean diet for 29 days prior to the switch in diet were comparatively higher in 17:1ω8, 18:1ω9, 18:2ω6, 18:1ω7, EPA and 20:2ω6 than those fed on fish. Following a change in diet, the fatty acid profile of the cuttlefish digestive gland reflected that of the new diet within 14 days. The results confirm that the fatty acid profile of the cuttlefish digestive gland clearly reflects the profile of its recent diet. It also shows that the digestive gland may not be an organ that accumulates dietary lipids for long-term storage, but rather is an organ where lipids are rapidly being turned over and potentially excreted.  相似文献
