The impact of land use and land cover changes on land surface temperature in a karst area of China 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Satellite images have been used extensively to study temporal changes in land use and land cover (LULC) in China. However, few studies have been conducted in the karst areas despite the large area and population involved and the fragile ecosystem. In this study, LULC changes were examined in part of Guizhou Province of southern China from 1991 to 2001 based on Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) images of November 7, 1991, December 5, 1994, and December 19, 2001. Land surface temperature (LST) and normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) were computed based on LULC types. The results show that agricultural land decreased, while urban areas expanded dramatically, and forest land increased slightly. Barren land increased from 1991 to 1994, and then decreased from 1994 to 2001. These changes in LULC widened the temperature difference between the urban and the rural areas. The change in LST was mainly associated with changes in construction materials in the urban area and in vegetation abundance both in the urban and rural areas. Vegetation had a dual function in the temperatures of different LULC types. While it could ease the warming trend in the urban or built-up areas, it helped to keep other lands warmer in the cold weather. The study also reveals that due to the government's efforts on reforestation, rural ecosystems in some of the study area were being restored. The time required for the karst ecosystem to recover was shorter than previously thought. 相似文献

To examine ownership and protection status of forests with high-biomass stores (>200 Mg/ha) in the Pacific Northwest (PNW) region of the United States, we used the latest versions of publicly available datasets. Overlay, aggregation, and GIS-based computation of forest area in broad biomass classes in the PNW showed that the National Forests contained the largest area of high-biomass forests (48.4 % of regional total), but the area of high-biomass forest on private lands was important as well (22.8 %). Between 2000 and 2008, the loss of high-biomass forests to fire on the National Forests was 7.6 % (236,000 ha), while the loss of high-biomass forest to logging on private lands (364,000 ha) exceeded the losses to fire across all ownerships. Many remaining high-biomass forest stands are vulnerable to future harvest as only 20 % are strictly protected from logging, while 26 % are not protected at all. The level of protection for high-biomass forests varies by state, for example, 31 % of all high-biomass federal forests in Washington are in high-protection status compared to only 9 % in Oregon. Across the conterminous US, high-biomass forest covers <3 % of all forest land and the PNW region holds 56.8 % of this area or 5.87 million ha. Forests with high-biomass stores are important to document and monitor as they are scarce, often threatened by harvest and development, and their disturbance including timber harvest results in net C losses to the atmosphere that can take a new generation of trees many decades or centuries to offset. 相似文献

Worldwide shale-gas development has the potential to cause substantial landscape disturbance. The northeastern U.S., specifically the Allegheny Plateau in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio, and Kentucky, is experiencing rapid exploration. Using Pennsylvania as a proxy for regional development across the Plateau, we examine land cover change due to shale-gas exploration, with emphasis on forest fragmentation. Pennsylvania’s shale-gas development is greatest on private land, and is dominated by pads with 1–2 wells; less than 10 % of pads have five wells or more. Approximately 45–62 % of pads occur on agricultural land and 38–54 % in forest land (many in core forest on private land). Development of permits granted as of June 3, 2011, would convert at least 644–1072 ha of agricultural land and 536–894 ha of forest land. Agricultural land conversion suggests that drilling is somewhat competing with food production. Accounting for existing pads and development of all permits would result in at least 649 km of new road, which, along with pipelines, would fragment forest cover. The Susquehanna River basin (feeding the Chesapeake Bay), is most developed, with 885 pads (26 % in core forest); permit data suggests the basin will experience continued heavy development. The intensity of core forest disturbance, where many headwater streams occur, suggests that such streams should become a focus of aquatic monitoring. Given the intense development on private lands, we believe a regional strategy is needed to help guide infrastructure development, so that habitat loss, farmland conversion, and the risk to waterways are better managed. 相似文献

This study utilizes remote sensing derived forest aboveground biomass (AGB) estimates and ownership information obtained from
the Protected Areas Database (PAD), combining landscape analyses and GIS techniques to demonstrate how different ownerships
(public, regulated private, and other private) relate to the spatial distribution of AGB in New England states of the USA.
“Regulated private” lands were dominated by lands in Maine covered by a Land Use Regulatory Commission. The AGB means between
all pairs of the identified ownership categories were significantly different (P < 0.05). Mean AGB observed in public lands (156 Mg/ha) was 43% higher than that in regulated private lands (109 Mg/ha), or
30% higher than that of private lands as a whole. Seventy-seven percent of the regional forests (or about 9,300 km2) with AGB >200 Mg/ha were located outside the area designated in the PAD and concentrated in western MA, southern VT, southwestern
NH, and northwestern CT. While relatively unfragmented and high-AGB forests (>200 Mg/ha) accounted for about 8% of total forested
land, they were unevenly proportioned among the three major ownership groups across the region: 19.6% of the public land,
0.8% of the regulated private land, and 11.0% of the other private land. Mean disturbance rates (in absolute value) between
1992 and 2001 were 16, 66, and 19 percent, respectively, on public, regulated private, and other private land. This indicates
that management practices from different ownerships have a strong impact on dynamic changes of landscape structures and AGB
distributions. Our results may provide insight information for policy makers on issues regarding forest carbon management,
conservation biology, and biodiversity studies at regional level. 相似文献

Carbon management and biodiversity 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
International efforts to mitigate human-caused changes in the Earth's climate are considering a system of incentives (debits and credits) that would encourage specific changes in land use that can help to reduce the atmospheric concentration of carbon dioxide. The two primary land-based activities that would help to minimize atmospheric carbon dioxide are carbon storage in the terrestrial biosphere and the efficient substitution of biomass fuels and bio-based products for fossil fuels and energy-intensive products. These two activities have very different land requirements and different implications for the preservation of biodiversity and the maintenance of other ecosystem services. Carbon sequestration in living forests can be pursued on lands with low productivity, i.e. on lands that are least suitable for agriculture or intensive forestry, and are compatible with the preservation of biodiversity over large areas. In contrast, intensive harvest-and-use systems for biomass fuels and products generally need more productive land to be economically viable. Intensive harvest-and-use systems may compete with agriculture or they may shift intensive land uses onto the less productive lands that currently harbor most of the Earth's biodiversity. Win-win solutions for carbon dioxide control and biodiversity are possible, but careful evaluation and planning are needed to avoid practices that reduce biodiversity with little net decrease in atmospheric carbon dioxide. Planning is more complex on a politically subdivided Earth where issues of local interest, national sovereignty, and equity come into play. 相似文献

To facilitate forest planning and management on National Wildlife Refuges, we synthesized multiple data sources to describe
land ownership patterns, land cover, landscape pattern, and changes in forest composition for four ecoregions and their associated
refuges of the Upper Midwest. We related observed patterns to ecological processes important for forest conservation and restoration,
with specific attention to refuge patterns of importance for forest landbirds of conservation priority. The large amount of
public land within the ecoregions (31–80%) suggests that opportunities exist for coarse and meso-scale approaches to conserving
and restoring ecological processes affecting the refuges, particularly historical fire regimes. Forests dominate both ecoregions
and refuges, but refuge forest patches are generally larger and more aggregated than in associated ecoregions. Broadleaf taxa
have increased in dominance in the ecoregions and displaced fire-dependent taxa such as pine (Pinus spp.) and other coniferous species; these changes in forest composition have likely also affected refuge forests. Despite
compositional changes, larger forest patches on refuges suggests that they may provide better habitat for area-sensitive forest
landbirds of mature, compositionally diverse forests than surrounding lands if management continues to promote increased patch
size. We reason that although fine-scale research and monitoring for species of conservation priority is important, broad
scale (ecoregional) assessments provide crucial context for effective forest and wildlife management in protected areas. 相似文献

Land Use and Land Cover Change Analysis and Prediction in the Upper Reaches of the Minjiang River,China 总被引:2,自引:1,他引:1
Scientists have aimed at exploring land use and land cover change (LUCC) and modeling future landscape pattern in order to
improve our understanding of the causes and consequences of these phenomena. This study addresses LUCC in the upper reaches
of Minjiang River, China, from 1974 to 2000. Based on remotely sensed images, LUCC and landscape pattern change were assessed
using cross-tabulation and landscape metrics. Then, using the CLUE-S model, changes in area of four types of land cover were
predicted for two scenarios considering forest polices over the next 20 years. Results showed that forestland decreased from
1974 to 2000 due to continuous deforestation, while grassland and shrubland increased correspondingly. At the same time, the
farmland and settlement land increased dramatically. Landscape fragmentation in the study area accompanied these changes.
Forestland, grassland, and farmland take opposite trajectories in the two scenarios, as does landscape fragmentation. LUCC
has led to ecological consequences, such as biodiversity loss and lowering of ecological carrying capacity. 相似文献

Changing climate and land cover are expected to impact flood hydrology in the Delaware River Basin over the 21st Century. HEC‐HMS models (U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Hydrologic Engineering Center‐Hydrologic Modeling System) were developed for five case study watersheds selected to represent a range of scale, soil types, climate, and land cover. Model results indicate that climate change alone could affect peak flood discharges by ?6% to +58% a wide range that reflects regional variation in projected rainfall and snowmelt and local watershed conditions. Land cover changes could increase peak flood discharges up to 10% in four of the five watersheds. In those watersheds, the combination of climate and land cover change increase modeled peak flood discharges by up to 66% and runoff volumes by up to 44%. Precipitation projections are a key source of uncertainty, but there is a high likelihood of greater precipitation falling on a more urbanized landscape that produces larger floods. The influence of climate and land cover changes on flood hydrology for the modeled watersheds varies according to future time period, climate scenario, watershed land cover and soil conditions, and flood frequency. The impacts of climate change alone are typically greater than land cover change but there is substantial geographic variation, with urbanization the greater influence on some small, developing watersheds. 相似文献

To achieve the overall objective of restoring natural environment and sustainable resource usability, each forest management
practice effect needs to be predicted using a simulation model. Previous simulation efforts were typically confined to public
land. Comprehensive forest management practices entail incorporating interactions between public and private land. To make
inclusion of private land into management planning feasible at the regional scale, this study uses a new method of combining
Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) data with remotely sensed forest group data to retrieve detailed species composition and
age information for the Missouri Ozark Highlands. Remote sensed forest group and land form data inferred from topography were
integrated to produce distinct combinations (ecotypes). Forest types and size classes were assigned to ecotypes based on their
proportions in the FIA data. Then tree species and tree age determined from FIA subplots stratified by forest type and size
class were assigned to pixels for the entire study area. The resulting species composition map can improve simulation model
performance in that it has spatially explicit and continuous information of dominant and associated species, and tree ages
that are unavailable from either satellite imagery or forest inventory data. In addition, the resulting species map revealed
that public land and private land in Ozark Highlands differ in species composition and stand size. Shortleaf pine is a co-dominant
species in public land, whereas it becomes a minor species in private land. Public forest is older than private forest. Both
public and private forests have deviated from historical forest condition in terms of species composition. Based on possible
reasons causing the deviation discussed in this study, corresponding management avenues that can assist in restoring natural
environment were recommended. 相似文献

With 207 million ha of forest covering 22% of its land area, China ranks fifth in the world in forest area. Rapid economic
growth, climate change, and forest disturbances pose new, complex challenges for forest research and management. Progress
in meeting these challenges is relevant beyond China, because China’s forests represent 34% of Asia’s forests and 5% of the
worlds’ forests. To provide a broader understanding of these management challenges and of research and policies that address
them, we organized this special issue on contemporary forest research and management issues in China. At the national level,
papers review major forest types and the evolution of sustainable forestry, the development of China’s forest-certification
efforts, the establishment of a forest inventory system, and achievements and challenges in insect pest control in China.
Papers focused on Northern China address historical, social, and political factors that have shaped the region’s forests;
the use of forest landscape models to assess how forest management can achieve multiple objectives; and analysis and modeling
of fuels and fire behavior. Papers addressing Central and South China describe the “Grain for Green” program, which converts
low productivity cropland to grassland and woodland to address erosion and soil carbon sequestration; the potential effects
of climate change on CO2 efflux and soil respiration; and relationships between climate and net primary productivity. China shares many forest management
and research issues with other countries, but in other cases China’s capacity to respond to forest management challenges is
unique and bears watching by the rest of the world. 相似文献

ABSTRACT: Forest hydrology should be a mature science with routine use of hydrological procedures to evaluate the effect of past, current and proposed harvesting practices on water resources. It is not. However, water users are pressuring forest managers to exercise their role in managing forested watersheds for water supply. Most forest managers are poorly equipped to carry out this role. Forestry schools need to ensure that their graduates, whether employed in forest management positions or as specialists in watershed management, understand that all forestry operations may affect instream or downstream water users. Specialists in forest hydrology should be fully aware of the following: (1) climate and watershed characteristics influence streamflow in separate ways; (2) forestry practices produce changes in water yield and quality, and that only these changes need to be evaluated to estimate their effects; (3) watershed storage is a critical factor in evaluating the effects of harvesting on streamflow; and (4) the effect of harvest on one watershed cannot be extrapolated to another without consideration of the processes affected. Research is needed to assist watershed managers in applying models to watersheds for which climate and streamflow data are insufficient. Research is also needed to incorporate climate, streamflow and other data for hydrological models into geographic information systems. Joint research projects are needed to develop physical relationships between stream channel characteristics of importance to fisheries biologists and streamflow characteristics affected by forest harvest. 相似文献

/ Implemented in the context of a long history ofintense public debate, forestry practices applied on private forest land areregulated in some form by 38 states. State regulatory activities can involvemany agencies implementing numerous regulatory laws, a single forestry agencyadministering a comprehensive regulatory program, or a combination of thetwo. Regulatory programs are designed to protect resources such as soils, water, wildlife, and scenic beauty. Program administration often involvesrule promulgation, harvest plan reviews, coordination of interagency reviews, and pre- and postharvest on-site inspections. Forest practice rules usuallyfocus on reforestation, forest roads, harvest procedures, and wildlifehabitat protection. Emerging regulatory trends include growth of multiagencyregulatory authority and associated jurisdictional conflicts, increasedtendencies to narrowly specify standards in statutes and rules, emergence ofcontingent regulations, growing sensitivity to processes enabling theadoption of new forest practice technologies and an ability to addresscumulative effects, interest in collaborative rule-making stemming fromheightened concern over legalization of administration processes, and growingconcern over the constitutional foundations for regulatory programs and thegovernment and private sector cost of implementing such programs.KEY WORDS: Ecosystem management; Forestry practices; Private landowners;Regulatory programs; State government 相似文献

Forests and soils are a major sink of carbon, and land use changes can affect the magnitude of above ground and below ground carbon stores and the net flux of carbon between the land and the atmosphere. Studies on methods for examining the future consequences of changes in patterns of land use change and carbon flux gains importance, as they provide different options for CO2 mitigation strategies. In this study, a simulation approach combining Markov chain processes and carbon pools for forests and soils has been implemented to study the carbon flows over a period of time. Markov chains have been computed by converting the land use change and forestry data of India from 1997 to 1999 into a matrix of conditional probabilities reflecting the changes from one class at time t to another class time t+1. Results from Markov modeling suggested Indian forests as a potential sink for 0.94 Gt carbon, with an increase in dense forest area of about 75.93 Mha and decrease of about 3.4 Mha and 5.0 Mha in open and scrub forests, if similar land use changes that occurred during 1997–1999 would continue. The limiting probabilities suggested 34.27 percent as dense forest, 6.90 as open forest, 0.4 percent mangrove forest, 0.1 percent scrub and 58 percent as non-forest area. Although Indian forests are found to be a potential carbon sink, analysis of results from transition probabilities for different years till 2050 suggests that, the forests will continue to be a source of about 20.59 MtC to the atmosphere. The implications of these results in the context of increasing anthropogenic pressure on open and scrub forests and their contribution to carbon source from land use change and forestry sector are discussed. Some of the mitigation aspects to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from land use change and forestry sector in India are also reviewed in the study. 相似文献

Agroforestry systems are fundamental features of the rural landscape of the Indian state of Kerala. Yet these mixed species
systems are increasingly being replaced by monocultures. This paper explores how public policies on land tenure, agriculture,
forestry and tree growing on private lands have interacted with farmer preferences in shaping land use dynamics and agroforestry
practices. It argues that not only is there no specific policy for agroforestry in Kerala, but also that the existing sectoral
policies of land tenure, agriculture, and forestry contributed to promoting plantation crops, even among marginal farmers.
Forest policies, which impose restrictions on timber extraction from farmers’ fields under the garb of protecting natural
forests, have often acted as a disincentive to maintaining tree-based mixed production systems on farmlands. The paper argues
that public policies interact with farmers’ preferences in determining land use practices. 相似文献

Changes in Land Cover and Subsequent Effects on Lower Fraser Basin Ecosystems from 1827 to 1990 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
/ European settlement began in the Lower Fraser Basin (LFB) inwestern British Columbia in 1827 and has impacted the basin ecosystem in anumber of ways, especially affecting the vegetation. Using previouslypublished data, air photos, and other historical material for the area, estimates of land cover were made for the years prior to 1827 and for 1930and 1990. The area of coniferous forest changed from 71% prior to 1827to 50% in 1930 to 54% in 1990. However, prior to 1827, only27% of the forest would have been immature (<120 years old), while40% would have been immature in 1930 and 73% of the forest wasimmature in 1990. The amount of wetland area decreased from 10% to1% of the study area while urban and agricultural area increased to26% of the study area by 1990. The changes in land cover have hadadverse effects on soil, water, and air quality; aquatic life; and plant andanimal populations. Estimates of changes in net primary production andorganic soil carbon suggest a decline over the past 170 years, although thelatter rate of decrease has slowed since 1930. As human populations in theLower Fraser Basin continue to increase, the quality of air, water, and soilwill continue to decline unless measures are taken.KEY WORDS: Human impact; Land cover; Net primary productivity; Organiccarbon in soil 相似文献

The effectiveness of market-based conservation in the tropics: forest certification in Ecuador and Bolivia 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
During the last decade, forest certification has gained momentum as a market-based conservation strategy in tropical forest countries. Certification has been promoted to enhance forest management in countries where governance capacities are insufficient to adequately manage natural resources and enforce pertinent regulations, given that certification relies largely on non-governmental organisations and private businesses. However, at present there are few tropical countries with large areas of certified forests. In this study, we conducted semi-structured stakeholder interviews in Ecuador and Bolivia to identify key framework conditions that influence the costs and benefits for companies to switch from conventional to certified forestry operations. Bolivia has a much greater relative area under certified forest management than Ecuador and also significantly more certified producers. The difference in the success of certification between both countries is particularly notable because Bolivia is a poorer country with more widespread corruption, and is landlocked with less access to export routes. Despite these factors, several characteristics of the Bolivian forest industry contribute to lower additional costs of certified forest management compared to Ecuador. Bolivia has stronger government enforcement of forestry regulations a fact that increases the cost of illegal logging, management units are larger, and vertical integration in the process chain from timber extraction to markets is higher. Moreover, forestry laws in Bolivia are highly compatible with certification requirements, and the government provides significant tax benefits to certified producers. Results from this study suggest that certification can be successful in countries where governments have limited governance capacity. However, the economic incentives for certification do not only arise from favourable market conditions. Certification is likely to be more successful where governments enforce forestry laws, provide financial incentives for certified forestry, and provide land tenure security, and where large-scale and vertically integrated forestry operations are commercially feasible. For this reason, at present, there are few developing countries where forest certification is likely to achieve widespread success. 相似文献

ABSTRACT: Harvesting 29-year-old loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) plantations on six small catchments in the Coastal Plain of west Tennessee caused variable but generally minor increases of storm-flow volumes during the four years following harvest. The increases were primarily associated with decreases of rainfall interception rather than with soil disturbance. Harvesting had no effect on stormflow volumes in six nearby catchments of 37-year-old loblolly pine to which the same treatments were applied. Postharvest increases of flow-weighted sediment concentrations averaged higher for the catchments with greater flows at both locations. During the fourth through eighth years after harvest, average sediment concentrations for harvested catchments at each location approximated closely the base rate of 62 mg L-1 previously defined for undisturbed pine types. Thus, relatively minor postharvest increases of stormflow volumes in the six 29-year-old plantations and increases of sediment concentrations in all 12 catchments were limited to about four years. Nevertheless, because of potential channel erosion, the findings confirm the need to extend stream management zones well up into drainages with intermittent and ephemeral flows wherever water quality is a concern. Despite certain undesirable effects of logging (baring of mineral soil, decreased weight and depth of forest floor, increased soil bulk density), the results demonstrate the high resilience developed by pine planted on severely eroded sites in the southern Coastal Plain. 相似文献

Restored annual streamflow (Qr) and measured daily streamflow of the Chaohe watershed located in northern China and associated long‐term climate and land use/cover data were used to explore the effects of land use/cover change and climate variability on the streamflow during 1961‐2009. There were no significant changes in annual precipitation (P) and potential evapotranspiration, whereas Qr decreased significantly by 0.81 mm/yr (p < 0.001) over the study period with a change point in 1999. We used 1961‐1998 as the baseline period (BP) and 1999‐2009 the change period (CP). The mean Qr during the CP decreased by 39.4 mm compared with that in the BP. From 1979 to 2009, the grassland area declined by 69.6%, and the forest and shrublands increased by 105.4 and 73.1%, respectively. The land use/cover change and climate variability contributed for 58.4 and 41.6% reduction in mean annual Qr, respectively. Compared with the BP, median and high flows in the CP decreased by 38.8 and up to 75.5%, respectively. The study concludes that large‐scale ecological restoration and watershed management in northern China has greatly decreased water yield and reduced high flows due to the improved land cover by afforestation leading to higher water loss through evapotranspiration. At a large watershed scale, land use/cover change could play as much of an important role as climate variability on water resources. 相似文献

The magnitude of the environmental and social consequences of soil erosion and land degradation in semiarid areas of the Mediterranean
region has long been recognized and studied. This paper investigates the interrelationship between land use/cover (LULC) changes
and land degradation using remotely sensed and ancillary data for southeastern Spain. The area of study, the Xaló River catchment
situated in the north of the Alicante Province, has been subjected to a number of LULC changes during the second half of the
20th century such as agricultural abandonment, forest fires, and tourist development. Aerial photographs dating back to 1956
were used for the delineation of historic LULC types; Landsat ETM+ data were used for the analysis and mapping of current
conditions. Two important indicators of land degradation, namely, susceptibility to surface runoff and soil erosion, were
estimated for the two dates using easily parametrizable models. The comparison of 1956 to 2000 conditions shows an overall
“recuperating” trend over the catchment and increased susceptibility to soil erosion only in 3% of the catchment area. The
results also identify potential degradation hot-spots where mitigation measures should be taken to prevent further degradation.
The readily implemented methodology, based on modest data requirements demonstrated by this study, is a useful tool for catchment
to regional scale land use change and land degradation studies and strategic planning for environmental management. 相似文献

We analyzed the effects of changes in land cover on the water balance in Spain’s Marina Baixa County, on the Mediterranean
coast. To reveal how different land management strategies have affected the area’s environment, four municipalities within
the same catchment were studied: Benidorm, Callosa d’en Sarrià, Beniardà, and Guadalest. In the municipalities of Callosa
and Benidorm, the proportion of the area covered by woodland declined by 4.2% and 30.2%, respectively, and woodland was replaced
by agriculture and urban development. The abandonment of farmland produced a 17% increase in the proportion of the area covered
by vegetation in Guadalest and Beniardá, where frequent forest fires have exacerbated a decrease in the area of pine woodland.
Tourism development in Benidorm has been accompanied by an increase in the transportation infrastructure and by an expansion
of areas with an impermeable surface, with the lowest level of infiltration into the aquifer system. These changes have generated
a net water deficit in Callosa and Benidorm of more than 6 Mm3/year, creating a high demand for water imported from other municipalities (Guadalest and Beniardá) or from outside of the
county to maintain the sustainability of the current water management strategies. The Marina Baixa case study is representative
of many of the world’s coastal areas that are undergoing rapid urban development based on an inappropriate understanding of
human progress based mainly on economic development and thus provides insights into water management in other areas. 相似文献
