Indigenous peoples are often considered potential allies in the conservation of biological diversity. Here we assess whether ethnobotanical skills of indigenous people contribute to a reduction in the clearance of tropical rain forest. We measured ethnobotanical skills of male household heads and area of rain forest cleared for agriculture among 128 households of Tsimane', a native Amazonian group in Bolivia. We used multivariate regressions to estimate the relation between ethnobotanical skills and area of rain forest cleared while controlling for schooling, health status, number of plots cleared, adults in household, and village of residency. We found that when the ethnobotanical skills of the male household head were doubled, the amount of tropical rain forest cleared per household was reduced by 25%. The association was stronger when the area of old-growth forest cleared was used as the dependent variable than when the area cleared from fallow forest was used as the dependent variable. People who use the forest for subsistence might place a higher value on standing forest than people who do not use it, and thus they may be more reluctant to cut down the forest. 相似文献

Background, aim, and scope The Yunnan snub-nosed monkey is one of the most endangered primates in the world. It is experiencing a range of ongoing threats
and the persisting effects of past disturbances. The prospects for this species are not very optimistic because habitat corridors
are severely damaged by logging, grazing, and mining. Each group of the monkeys in different areas is facing a unique variety
of threats. Based on genetic analysis, Rhinopithecus bieti should be separated into three management units for conservation, of which the Mt. Laojun management unit involves the most
endangered primates. Despite the fact that the vegetation on Mt. Laojun is in a relatively pristine state, only two groups
of monkeys, of a total of fewer than 300, survive in the area. With this paper, we aimed to address the capacity of the monkeys’
habitat at the study site and the possible reasons for the small populations.
Materials and methods Rapid ecological assessment based on a SPOT 5 image and field survey was used to simulate the vegetation of the whole area
based on reference ecological factors of the GIS system. The vegetation map of the site was thus derived from this simulation.
Based on the previous studies, the three vegetation types were identified as the suitable habitat of the monkeys. The confusion
matrix-based field GPS points were applied to analyze the precision of the habitat map. Based on the map of suitable habitat
of the monkeys, the utilization of the habitat and the carrying capacity were analyzed in the GIS.
Results The confusion matrix-based field GPS points were applied to the habitat analysis process, and it was found that the habitat
map was 81.3% precise. Then, with the current habitat map, we found that the mixed forest currently used by the monkeys is
only a very small fraction (2.65%) of the overall potential habitat of the population, while the dark conifer forest is 4.09%.
Discussion Poaching is the greatest short-term threat to this species, particularly in the southern range where local residents have
a strong tradition of hunting. Quite a few individual monkeys are still trapped accidentally due to the high density of traps.
These problems are hard to mitigate because it is difficult to enforce laws due to the extremely rugged terrain.
Conclusions The results show that there is a great ecological capacity of the area for the monkey’s survival and a great potential for
an expansion of the monkey population at the site. Based on the current population and its geographical range, it can be estimated
that the suitable habitat area defined by this study can support more monkeys, about many times the current population. Thus,
at least in the Mt. Laojun Area, poaching pressure is the main factor to be responsible for the low density of Yunnan snub-nosed
monkeys instead of habitat alteration.
Recommendations and perspectives Based on these results, some suggestions relating to conservation can be made: Focus conservation efforts on the current distribution
area of the monkeys and create a 20 km buffer zone; design a long-term plan for the suitable habitat outside the buffer zone
to set up a wildlife corridor in the long run; establish an association for the local hunters exploiting, their knowledge
on the animals to promote monkey conservation and stop poaching. Also, the map derived from the study helps managers to allocate
conservation resources more efficiently and enhances the overall outcomes of conservation measures. 相似文献

Background, aim, and scope At tropical latitudes, and especially on the semi-arid coasts of the Brazilian Northeast, the rainfall regime governs the
water quality of estuaries due to the pronounced difference between the rainy and dry seasons. These changes may be responsible
for seasonal changes in bioavailability of mercury (Hg) and other pollutants to the estuarine and coastal biota. Mercury bioaccumulates
along estuarine–marine food chains usually result in higher concentrations in tissues of top predators and posing a risk to
both marine mammals and humans alike. The Goiana River Estuary (7.5° S) is a typical estuary of the semi-arid tropical regions
and supports traditional communities with fisheries (mollusks, fish, and crustacean). It is also responsible for an important
part of the biological production of the adjacent coastal waters.
Materials and methods
Trichiurus lepturus (Actinopterygii: Perciformes) is a pscivorous marine straggler. Fish from this species (n = 104) were captured in a trapping barrier used by the local traditional population and using an otter trawl net along the
main channel of the low estuary during two dry seasons (D1 = November, December 2005, January 2006; D2 = November, December
2006, January 2007) and the end of a rainy season (R = August, September, October 2006). Fish muscle samples were preserved
cold and then freeze-dried prior to analysis of its total mercury (Hg-T) contents. Total mercury was determined by cold vapor
atomic absorption spectrometry (CV-AAS) with sodium borohydride as a reducing agent.
Results The studied individuals (n = 104) were sub-adult (30–70 cm, 71 ind.) and adult fish (>70 cm, 33 ind.). Weight (W) (204.1 ± 97.9 g, total biomass = 21,229.7 g)
and total length (TL) (63.1 ± 10.1 cm, range 29.5–89.0 cm) presented a significant (p < 0.05) correlation. Two-way ANOVA (n = 81) showed that TL and W had significant differences (p < 0.05) among seasons, being higher in D1 than in D2 and R, respectively. Moreover, season vs. month interaction were detected
for the variables length and weight. For the variable weight was detected significant difference for the factor month (p < 0.05). It suggests that the fish enter the estuary at the end of the rainy season and increase in length and weight during
the time they spend in the estuary. Fish from this estuary are shown to be fit for human consumption (125.3 ± 61.9 μgHg-T
kg–1 w.wt.; n = 104). Fish mercury contents increased with size and weight. Correlations between TL and Hg-T (r = 0.37286) and between W and Hg-T (r = 0.38212) were significant (p < 0.05). Dryer months showed higher mercury concentrations in fish (D1 773.4 ± 207.5 μgHg-T kg–1 d.wt., n = 27; D2 370.1 ± 78.8 μgHg-T kg–1 d.wt., n = 27; R 331.2 ± 138.5 μgHg-T kg–1 d.wt., n = 27). The variable mercury concentration showed differences in relation to the factor season (p < 0.05), where fish captured during the first dry season showed the highest concentration of mercury. The correlation between
Hg-T and rainfall (Rf) showed a negative correlation (r = –0.56; p < 0.05).
Discussion The main likely source of mercury to this estuary is diffuse continental run off, including urban and industrial effluents.
Since concentration of mercury in fish tissue is negatively correlated to rainfall, but positively correlated with fish length
and weight, it suggests that fish growth in this estuary results in mercury uptake and concentration on the fish tissue. In
the dry season of 2005–2006, when rainfall remained below the historic average, fish bioaccumulated significantly more mercury
than in the dry season 2006–2007, when rainfall was within the predictable historic average. It is suggested that less rainfall,
and consequently less particulate matter and less primary production in the estuary, make mercury more available to the higher
levels of the estuarine food chain. In the case of higher rainfall, when river flow increases and water quality in the estuary
is reduced, mercury probably is quickly exported associated to the particulate matter to the adjacent coastal waters where
it then disperses. This species is a potential routine bioindicator for mercury contamination of the biota, but so far was
used only with a limited number of individuals and contexts.
Conclusions Fish from the Goiana River estuary can still be safely consumed by the local population. However, any further contamination
of this resource might lead to total mercury levels above the recommended limits for pregnant women and small children. The
proposed heavy dependency of total mercury levels in fish on water quality indicates that land use and water quality standards
must be more closely watched in order to guarantee that best possible practices are in place to prevent bioaccumulation of
mercury and its transfer along the food chain. Human interventions and climatic events which affect river water flow are also
playing a role in the mercury cycle at tropical semi-arid estuaries.
Recommendations and perspectives
T. lepturus is largely consumed by coastal populations of tropical and sub-tropical countries all over the world. It is also consumed
by a number of marine mammals over which we have a strong conservation interest. This species is also a link among different
ecosystems along the estuarine ecocline. Therefore, knowledge of its degree of contamination might contribute to public health
issues as well as marine conservation actions. Studies on mercury and other contaminants using this species as bioindicator
(cosmopolitan, readily available) could help elucidating mechanisms through which pollutants are being transferred not only
through the food chain, but also from estuarine–coastal–open waters. In addition, using the same species in marine pollution
studies, especially as part of a mosaic of species, allows for wide range comparisons of marine food chain contamination. 相似文献

Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) is still used in Africa for the indoor control of malaria and it may represent a potential
hazard for wildlife. The littoral sediments of two alkaline-saline lakes, Natron (Tanzania) and Bogoria (Kenya), in the Eastern
Rift Valley, supporting large populations of lesser flamingos (Phoeniconaias minor), were analysed for DDT residues. Physical–chemical analyses (temperature, conductivity, pH and dissolved oxygen) were also
performed on the water of the two lakes and in the tributaries of Lake Natron, to evaluate the influence of the environmental
variables on pollutant occurrence. At Lake Natron, around 1 km from the sediment collection sites, tree leaves of Acacia tortilis were also collected. The main metabolite found in all sediment samples was pp’DDE, whilst equal concentrations of pp’DDT
and pp’DDE were measured in acacia leaves. The levels of DDTs measured in the sediments were within 5.9–30.9 ng g−1 d.w., reaching the maximum value in a tributary of Lake Natron. On the whole, the contamination of Lake Natron and Lake Bogoria
basins seems to be quite moderate. Nevertheless, the pp’DDE/pp’DDT ratio equals 1 in the Acacia tortilis leaves, which makes one suppose that the input of the parent compound was rather recent and could have been from aerial transport
or dust from relatively close-by old pesticides storage sites. 相似文献

Coptis teeta-based agroforestry system and its conservation potential: a case study from northwest Yunnan 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Coptis teeta (Ranunculaceae), is a nontimber forest product (NTFP) that only grows in northwest Yunnan and northeast India. Its tenuous rhizome, known as "Yunnan goldthread" in the traditional Chinese medicine system, has been used as an antibacterial and as an antiinflammatory medicine for a long time. The increasing demand has resulted in commercial harvesting pressure on wild populations that were already dwindling as a result of deforestation, and wild populations are at risk of extinction. Fortunately, there exists at least 2000 hectares of a C. teeta-based agroforestry system initiated by the Lisu people in Nujiang, northwest Yunnan. This cultivation supplies us with a valuable study case for the balance between conservation and sustainable use. This case study investigated the traditional management system and history of C. teeta in Nujiang through ethnobotanical methods and field investigation. We also contrasted initial costs, economic returns, and labor demands for C. teeta cultivation with other major land uses in the region. Compared with swidden agriculture, the major land-use type in the region, C. teeta cultivation offers high economic returns and low labor and initial costs; moreover, C. teeta cultivation does not interfere with subsistence agricultural duties. This agroforestry system reflected that the cultivation of NTFPs is a conservation strategy for maintaining forest diversity, while providing a stable economic return to local forest communities, and indicates how local people manage biodiversity effectively. 相似文献

Over the past 50 years, human beings have influenced ecosystems more rapidly than at any similar time in human history, drastically
altering ecosystem functioning. Along with ecosystem transformation and degradation, a number of studies have addressed the
functioning, assessment and management of ecosystems. The concept of ecosystem services has been developed in the scientific
literature since the end of the 1970s. However, ecosystem service research has focused on certain service categories, ecosystem
types, and geographical areas, while substantial knowledge gaps remain concerning several aspects. We assess the development
and current status of ecosystem service research on the basis of publications collected from the Web of Science. The material
consists of (1) articles (n = 353) from all the years included in the Web of Science down to the completion of the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment and
(2) more recent articles (n = 687) published between 2006 and 2008. We also assess the importance of international processes, such as the Convention
on Biological Diversity, the Kyoto Protocol and the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment, as drivers of ecosystem service research.
Finally, we identify future prospects and research needs concerning the assessment and management of ecosystem services. 相似文献

The controversy over the world’s first genetically modified (GM) wheat, Roundup Ready wheat (RRW), challenged the efficacy of ‘science-based’ risk assessment, largely because it excluded the public, particularly farmers, from meaningful input. Risk analysis, in contrast, is broader in orientation as it incorporates scientific data as well as socioeconomic, ethical, and legal concerns, and considers expert and lay input in decision-making. Local knowledge (LK) of farmers is experience-based and represents a rich and reliable source of information regarding the impacts associated with agricultural technology, thereby complementing the scientific data normally used in risk assessment. Animal populations are exposed to large-scale anthropogenic impact from e.g. climate change, habitat alteration and supplemental
stocking. All of these may affect body condition in wintering dabbling ducks, which in turn may affect an individual’s survival
and reproductive success. The aim of this study was to assess whether there have been morphometric changes in Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos) and Teal (Anas crecca) over the last 30 years at a major wintering site. Body mass and condition increased from the 1950s–1960s to the 2000s in
both species. The increase in body mass amounted to as much as 11.7%, with no corresponding change in body size. Improved
body condition was maintained from early to mid-winter, but then converged with historical values for late winter. Our interpretation
is that increasingly benign ambient winter conditions permit ducks to maintain better energetic “safety margins” throughout
winter, and that converging spring departure values may be related to evolutionary flight energetic optima. The observed changes

Background, aim, and scope It has been known that the pollutants of electronic wastes (E-wastes) can lead to severe pollution to the environment. It
has been reported that about 50% to 80% of E-wastes from developed countries are exported to Asia and Africa. It has become
a major global environmental problem to deal with ‘E-wastes’. E-waste recycling has remained primitive in Jinghai, China.
This not only produces enormous environmental pollution but also can bring about toxic or genotoxic effects on the human body,
threatening the health of both current residents and future generations living in the local environment. The concentration
of lead in the blood of children in the E-waste polluted area in China is higher than that of the control area. But little
is known about the cytogenetic effect to human beings caused by the pollution of E-wastes. In the present study, experiments
have been performed to investigate the genetics of permanent residents of three villages with numerous E-waste disposal sites
and to analyze the harmful effects of exposure to E-wastes.
Materials and methods In total, 171 villagers (exposed group) were randomly selected from permanent residents of three villages located in Jinghai
County of Tianjin, China, where there has been massive disposal of E-wastes. Thirty villagers were selected from the neighboring
towns without E-waste disposal sites to serve as controls. Chromosomal aberrations and cytokinesis blocking micronucleus were
performed to detect the cytogenetic effect, dic + r (dicentric and ring chromosome), monomer, fragments (acentric fragments,
minute chromosomes, and acentric rings), translocation, satellite, quadriradial, total aberrations, and micronuclear rate
were scored for each subject. DNA damage was detected using comet assay; the DNA percentage in the comet tail (TDNA%), tail
moment (TM), and Olive tail moment (OTM) were recorded to describe DNA damage to lymphocytes.
Results The total chromosome aberration rates (5.50%) and micronuclear rates (16.99%) of the exposure group were significantly higher
than in the control group (P = 0.000). The percentage of DNA in the comet tail, tail moment, and Olive tail moment detected by comet assay showed that
there was a significant difference in DNA damage in the exposure group (P = 0.000). The chromosome aberration, micronucleus rate, and DNA damage observed in women were significantly higher than those
in men. Chromosome aberration and micronuclear rates of both smokers and non-smokers in the exposure group are obviously higher
than that in the control group (P = 0.000).
Discussion The use of outdated (and unsafe) ways to deal with E-wastes can lead to exposure to a variety of substances harmful to human
health. The components of pollution may enter the human body through the air, drinking water, and food chain to damage human
genetic material, resulting in genomic instability. The rates of chromosomal aberration, micronucleus formation, and the degree
of DNA damage in women in the group exposed to electronic waste were significantly higher than in men. The reason for this
may be concerned with the traditional lifestyle of the local residents or the difference of sensitivity to the exposure to
E-wastes or any others. Further investigations are needed to provide evidence to demonstrate this.
Conclusions Here, we report the obviously cytogenetic toxicity to the exposure population by the E-waste pollution for the first time.
E-waste pollution may be a potential agent of genetic mutation, and may induce cytogenetic damage within the general population
exposed to the pollution. These findings need to be considered, and steps should be taken to protect the current population
and future generations from the effects of pollution with E-wastes.
Recommendations and perspectives The above results remind us that the impact of E-waste recycling on environmental quality of Jinghai should be evaluated soon.
Moreover, it is urgent for the government to prohibit E-waste import and its processing by outdated ways. The future studies
such as pollutant details of drinking water, air, and soil in the area as well as epidemiological investigations on the harmful
effect to children must be performed eagerly. All the data available do provide a compelling case for immediate action in
both countries to address workplace health and safety and waste management.

Background, aim, and scope The adverse environmental impacts of chlorinated hydrocarbons on the Earth’s ozone layer have focused attention on the effort
to replace these compounds by nonchlorinated substitutes with environmental acceptability. Hydrofluoroethers (HFEs) and fluorinated
alcohols are currently being introduced in many applications for this purpose. Nevertheless, the presence of a great number
of C–F bonds drives to atmospheric long-lived compounds with infrared absorption features. Thus, it is necessary to improve
our knowledge about lifetimes and global warming potentials (GWP) for these compounds in order to get a complete evaluation
of their environmental impact. Tropospheric degradation is expected to be initiated mainly by OH reactions in the gas phase.
Nevertheless, Cl atoms reaction may also be important since rate constants are generally larger than those of OH. In the present
work, we report the results obtained in the study of the reactions of Cl radicals with HFE-7000 (CF3CF2CF2OCH3) (1) and its isomer CF3CF2CF2CH2OH (2).
Materials and methods Kinetic rate coefficients with Cl atoms have been measured using the discharge flow tube–mass spectrometric technique at 1 Torr
of total pressure. The reactions of these chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) substitutes have been studied under pseudo-first-order
kinetic conditions in excess of the fluorinated compounds over Cl atoms. The temperature ranges were 266–333 and 298–353 K
for reactions of HFE-7000 and CF3CF2CF2CH2OH, respectively.
Results The measured room temperature rate constants were k(Cl+CF3CF2CF2OCH3) = (1.24 ± 0.28) × 10−13 cm3 molecule−1 s−1and k(Cl+CF3CF2CF2CH2OH) = (8.35 ± 1.63) × 10−13 cm3 molecule−1 s−1 (errors are 2σ + 10% to cover systematic errors). The Arrhenius expression for reaction 1 was k
1(266–333 K) = (6.1 ± 3.8) × 10−13exp[−(445 ± 186)/T] cm3 molecule−1 s−1 and k
2(298–353 K) = (1.9 ± 0.7) × 10−12exp[−(244 ± 125)/T] cm3 molecule−1 s−1 (errors are 2σ). The reactions are reported to proceed through the abstraction of an H atom to form HCl and the corresponding halo-alkyl
radical. At 298 K and 1 Torr, yields on HCl of 0.95 ± 0.38 and 0.97 ± 0.16 (errors are 2σ) were obtained for CF3CF2CF2OCH3 and CF3CF2CF2CH2OH, respectively.
Discussion The obtained kinetic rate constants are related to the previous data in the literature, showing a good agreement taking into
account the error limits. Comparing the obtained results at room temperature, k
1 and k
2, HFE-7000 is significantly less reactive than its isomer C3F7CH2OH. A similar behavior has been reported for the reactions of other fluorinated alcohols and their isomeric fluorinated ethers
with Cl atoms. Literature data, together with the results reported in this work, show that, for both fluorinated ethers and
alcohols, the kinetic rate constant may be considered as not dependent on the number of –CF2– in the perfluorinated chain. This result may be useful since it is possible to obtain the required physicochemical properties
for a given application by changing the number of –CF2– without changes in the atmospheric reactivity. Furthermore, lifetimes estimations for these CFCs substitutes are calculated
and discussed. The average estimated Cl lifetimes are 256 and 38 years for HFE-7000 and C3H7CH2OH, respectively.
Conclusions The studied CFCs’ substitutes are relatively short-lived and OH reaction constitutes their main reactive sink. The average
contribution of Cl reactions to global lifetime is about 2% in both cases. Nevertheless, under local conditions as in the
marine boundary layer, τ
Cl values as low as 2.5 and 0.4 years for HFE-7000 and C3H7CH2OH, respectively, are expected, showing that the contribution of Cl to the atmospheric degradation of these CFCs substitutes
under such conditions may constitute a relevant sink. In the case of CF3CF2CF2OCH3, significant activation energy has been measured, thus the use of kinetic rate coefficient only at room temperature would
result in underestimations of lifetimes and GWPs.
Recommendations and perspectives The results obtained in this work may be helpful within the database used in the modeling studies of coastal areas. The knowledge
of the atmospheric behavior and the structure–reactivity relationship discussed in this work may also contribute to the development
of new environmentally acceptable chemicals. New volatile materials susceptible of emission to the troposphere should be subject
to the study of their reactions with OH and Cl in the range of temperature of the troposphere. The knowledge of the temperature
dependence of the kinetic rate constants, as it is now reported for the case of reactions 1 and 2, will allow more accurate
lifetimes and related magnitudes like GWPs. Nevertheless, a better knowledge of the vertical Cl tropospheric distribution

A re-survey of acid-sensitive lakes in Ireland (initial survey 1997) was carried out during spring 2007 (n = 60). Since 1997, atmospheric emissions of sulfur dioxide and deposition of non-marine sulfate (SO4
2−) in Ireland have decreased by ~63 and 36%, respectively. Comparison of water chemistry between surveys showed significant
decreases in the concentration of SO4
2−, non-marine SO4
2−, and non-marine base cations. In concert, alkalinity increased significantly; however, no change was observed in surface
water pH and total aluminum. High inter-annual variability in sea salt inputs and increasing (albeit non-significant) dissolved
organic carbon may have influenced the response of pH and total aluminum (as ~70% is organic aluminum). Despite their location
on the western periphery of Europe, and dominant influence from Atlantic air masses, the repeat survey suggests that the chemistry
of small Irish lakes has shown a significant response to reductions in air pollution driven primarily by the implementation
of the Gothenburg Protocol under the UNECE Convention on Long-Range Transboundary Air Pollution. 相似文献

Face-to-face interviews (n = 553) were conducted in five counties in East-Central China to study farmers’ fertilizer application behaviors, decision-making processes, attitudes towards adopting better fertilizer application technologies, and environmental consciousness. The survey results revealed widespread fertilizer misapplication and highly variable application behaviors in the study regions. The lack of scientific knowledge on fertilizers and the absence of guidance from agricultural extension services have forced the farmers to rely on personal judgment and advice from fertilizer dealers and friends to make decisions in fertilizer application. Overall, farmers have been idiosyncratic in fertilizer application with limited adoption of better fertilizer application technologies. There are great potentials for reducing pollutant load from agricultural runoff through promoting scientific fertilizer application in the regions. Background, aim, and scope
Linear alkylbenzene sulfonate (LAS) is the most used anionic surfactant in a worldwide scale and is considered a high-priority pollutant. LAS is regarded as a readily biodegradable product under aerobic conditions in aqueous media and is mostly removed in wastewater treatment plants, but an important fraction (20–25%) is immobilized in sewage sludge and persists under anoxic conditions. Due to the application of the sludge as a fertilizer, LAS reaches agricultural soil, and therefore, microbial toxicity tests have been widely used to evaluate the influence of LAS on soil microbial ecology. However, molecular-based community-level analyses have been seldom applied in studies regarding the effects of LAS on natural or engineered systems, and, to our knowledge, there are no reports of their use for such appraisals in agricultural soil. Amazonian deforestation rates vary regionally, and ebb and flow according to macroeconomic policy and local social factors. We used remote sensing and field interviews to investigate deforestation patterns and drivers at a Peruvian frontier during 1986-1991, when rural credit and guaranteed markets were available; and 1991-1997, when structural adjustment measures were imposed. The highest rate of clearing (1.5% gross) was observed along roads during 1986-1991. Roadside deforestation slowed in 1991-1997 (0.7% gross) and extensive regrowth yielded a net increase in forest cover (0.5%). Deforestation along rivers was relatively constant. Riverside farms today retain more land in both crops and forest than do roadside farms where pasture and successional growth predominate. Long-term residents maintain more forest on their farms than do recent colonists, but proximity to urban markets is the strongest predictor of forest cover. Future credit programs must reflect spatial patterns of development and ecological vulnerability, and support the recuperation of fallow lands and secondary forest. 相似文献

A dynamic model of forest ecosystems was used to investigate the effects of climate change, atmospheric deposition and harvest intensity on 48 forest sites in Sweden (n = 16) and Switzerland (n = 32). The model was used to investigate the feasibility of deriving critical loads for nitrogen (N) deposition based on changes in plant community composition. The simulations show that climate and atmospheric deposition have comparably important effects on N mobilization in the soil, as climate triggers the release of organically bound nitrogen stored in the soil during the elevated deposition period. Climate has the most important effect on plant community composition, underlining the fact that this cannot be ignored in future simulations of vegetation dynamics. Harvest intensity has comparatively little effect on the plant community in the long term, while it may be detrimental in the short term following cutting. This study shows: that critical loads of N deposition can be estimated using the plant community as an indicator; that future climatic changes must be taken into account; and that the definition of the reference deposition is critical for the outcome of this estimate. 相似文献

Little to no information exists for polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in marine mammals frequenting the highly urbanized southern California (USA) coast. Fourteen PBDE congeners were determined by GC-ECNI-MS in blubber of pinnipeds stranded locally between 1994 and 2006. Total PBDE concentrations (∑PBDE) in California sea lion (n = 63) ranged from 0.04 to 33.7 μg/g wet weight (mean: 5.24 μg/g). To our knowledge, these are the highest reported PBDE levels in marine mammals to date. By comparison, mean ∑PBDE in Pacific harbor seals (n = 9) and northern elephant seals (n = 16) were 0.96 and 0.09 μg/g, respectively. PBDEs in adult males were higher than for adult females, however, no age class differences or temporal trends were observed. As the first PBDE data reported for marine mammals in this region, the elevated levels underscore the need for additional studies on the sources, temporal trends, and potential effects of PBDEs in highly urbanized coastal zones. 相似文献

Background, aim, and scope Endosulfan is one of the organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and also a candidate to be included in a group of new persistent
organic pollutants (UNEP 2007). The first national endosulfan usage inventories in China with 1/4° longitude by 1/6° latitude resolution has been reported
in an accompanying paper. In the second part of the paper, we compiled the gridded historical emissions and soil residues
of endosulfan in China from the usage inventories. Based on the residue/emission data, gridded concentrations of endosulfan
in Chinese soil and air have been calculated. These inventories will provide valuable data for the further study of endosulfan.
Methods Emission and residue of endosulfan were calculated from endosulfan usage by using a simplified gridded pesticide emission
and residue model—SGPERM, which is an integrated modeling system combining mathematical model, database management system,
and geographic information system. By using the emission and residue inventories, annual air and soil concentrations of endosulfan
in each cell were determined.
Results and discussion Historical gridded emission and residue inventories of α- and β-endosulfan in agricultural soil in China with 1/4° longitude
by 1/6° latitude resolution have been created. Total emissions were around 10,800 t, with α-endosulfan at 7,400 t and β-endosulfan
at 3,400 t from 1994 to 2004. The highest residues were 140 t for α-endosulfan and 390 t for β-endosulfan, and the lowest
residues were 0.7 t for α-endosulfan and 170 t for β-endosulfan in 2004 in Chinese agricultural soil where endosulfan was
applied. Based on the emission and residue inventories, concentrations of α- and β-endosulfan in Chinese air and agricultural
surface soil were also calculated for each grid cell. We have estimated annual averaged air concentrations and the annual
minimum and maximum soil concentrations across China. The real concentrations will be different from season to season. Although
our model does not consider the transport of the insecticide in the atmosphere, which could be very important in some areas
during some special time, the estimated concentrations of endosulfan in Chinese air and soil derived from the endosulfan emission
and residue inventories are in general consistent with the published monitoring data.
Conclusions To our knowledge, this work is the first inventory of this kind for endosulfan published on a national scale. Concentrations
of the chemical in Chinese air and agricultural surface soil were calculated for each grid cell. Results show that the estimated
concentrations of endosulfan in Chinese air and soil agree reasonably well with the monitoring data in general.
Recommendations and perspectives The gridded endosulfan emission/residue inventories and also the air and soil concentration inventories created in this study
will be updated upon availability of new information, including usage and monitoring data. The establishment of these inventories
for the OCP is important for both scientific communities and policy makers. 相似文献

Thyroid hormones, which influence body metabolism and development, could be affected by persistent organic pollutants. We sought to examine the relationship between polybrominated biphenyls (PBBs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and thyroid disease. We employed incidence density sampling to perform a nested case control analysis of the Michigan Long-Term PBB Cohort. Cohort members (n = 3333) were exposed to PBBs through contaminated cattle feed in 1973-1974 and to PCBs through daily life. Those with detectable serum PBB and PCB concentrations at enrollment were categorized into tertiles of PBB and PCB exposure. Case-patients were cohort members answering “Yes” to “Has a healthcare provider ever told you that you had a thyroid problem?” during follow-up interviews; control-patients were cohort members answering “No”. We used odds ratios (OR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) to compare odds of thyroid disease by PBB and PCB exposure and by various risk factors. Total cumulative thyroid disease incidence after 33 years was 13.9% among women and 2.6% among men. After adjusting for body mass index, we found no statistically significant differences in odds of any type of thyroid disease among women or men with elevated PBB or PCB exposure. Compared to control-patients, women with thyroid disease had increased odds of being overweight/obese (OR = 2.82, 95% CI: 1.94-4.11) and developing infertility (OR = 1.71, 95% CI: 1.08-2.69), diabetes (OR = 1.61, 95% CI: 1.04-2.51), or arthritis (OR = 1.71, 95% CI: 1.18-2.50) during follow-up. Additional research should explore potential associations between PBBs/PCBs and thyroid disease among children exposed in utero. 相似文献

Traditional ecological knowledge (TEK) is a critical global resource that may be eroding amid social and environmental change. Here, we present data on local perceptions of TEK change from three communities on Malekula Island in Vanuatu. Utilizing a structured interview (n = 120), we find a common perception of TEK loss. Participants defined two key periods of TEK erosion (roughly 1940–1960 and 1980–present), and noted that TEK decline was driven both external (e.g., church) and internal (e.g., shifting values) processes. Erosion was perceived to more comprehensive in the worldview domain than in aspects of ethnobiological knowledge and practice. These data indicate the perceived fragility of TEK systems and the complexity of TEK change. TEK systems are critical to natural resource management, and data such as these will assist in designing nuanced responses to the ongoing loss of cultural knowledge and practice. 相似文献
