Montastraea annularis, M. faveolata, and M.␣franksi are three recently separated species that together dominate reefs of the tropical western Atlantic. Despite morphological, life-history, ecological and genetic differences, the legitimacy of their status as separate species has been questioned. This controversy stems from both the scarcity of unambiguous, diagnostic differences among them, and from the possibility of extensive hybridization associated with their approximately synchronous reproduction in sympatry. Here we report on fertilization trials and the timing of spawning, both of which suggest that the potential for hybridization may be limited. Crosses between M. faveolata (the most genetically distinctive taxon) and the other two species were largely unsuccessful, as were selfed matings for all three species. M. annularis and M. franksi showed no evidence of fertilization barriers, but the timing of spawning typically differed between them by 1 to 2 h. We also found that spawning times in the field of M. annularis and M. faveolata were non-overlapping in 1995, and that the timing of spawning in M. annularis could be experimentally shifted forward by simulating earlier than natural sunsets. These findings from Panamá and Honduras, particularly given their consistency with comparable observations and experiments elsewhere, provide evidence of reproductive isolation and support the separate species status of these three taxa. Some hybridization may occur under natural conditions at these sites, particularly between M. annularis and M.␣franksi. Rampant genetic interchange among these taxa in Central America seems unlikely, however, in the light of the concordant associations between morphology, reproductive biology and other characters which are observed.  The spawning patterns of two penaeid prawns, Metapenaeus endeavouri (Schmitt) and M. ensis (De Haan), were examined from data collected at 45 stations between March 1986 and March 1992. An index of population fecundity based on the abundance, proportion and fecundity of sexually mature females was used as a measure of spawning output of the prawn stock. The population fecundity index for M. ensis was higher than that for M. endeavouri. The monthly population fecundity index for M. endeavouri varied markedly among years, while that for M. ensis was consistent among years. Spawning of M. endeavouri occurred year-round, while that of M. ensis was concentrated mainly in spring (September to November). For M. endeavouri, a minor spawning, derived from a relatively small number of summer spawners, occurred in the 20 to 30 m offshore waters in summer. In early summer (after May), the major spawning group consisted of large females from the winter-spawning cohort, and the spawning area shifted to depths of 30 to 60 m. In winter (July), the major spawning, derived from the winter-spawning cohort, occurred at depths of 20 to 40 m. For M. ensis, the major spawning, derived from the spring-spawning cohort, was observed in depths <50 m and was concentrated particularly in inshore waters (<20 m) in spring. In autumn, the spawning output was mainly from the autumn-spawning cohort, which comprised but a small number of individuals. In winter, the major spawning group again consisted of the large females from the spring-spawning cohort, and spawning increased in the oceanic waters (>50 m). These results suggest that mature female M. endeavouri and M. ensis move offshore (>40 m) by May and July, respectively, and return to shallow waters (<35 m) in July and November, respectively. The monthly reproduction patterns of both species in the “effective spawning” area showed that the major spawning season for M. endeavouri is August to October and that for M. ensis is September to December. Two species of marine mussel, Mytilus edulis and M. galloprovincialis hybridize on the coasts of western Europe. Studies of hybrid mussel populations have shown that natural selection favors M. galloprovincialis-like genotypes within this hybrid zone. Many hypotheses have been proposed to explain differential mortality in these populations. This study tests two hypotheses addressing factors of mortality in a population, and describes yearly energy storage and reproductive cycles of these two species and their hybrids. No evidence was found that the two taxa have different overall levels of reproductive effort or parasite infestation. They do, however, have asynchronous spawning periods and divergent energy storage strategies. In the year of this study, 1993, the M. edulis genotypic class spawned as a group in June and July. After spawning, they built up a high level of mantle energy-storage tissues that are probably used for gametogenesis in the following winter and spring. The M. galloprovincialis genotypic group, however, spawned asynchronously, beginning in June and finishing by August, and did not build up high levels of energy-storage tissues in summer. These results add a temporal component to the interpretation of selective forces acting to shape this hybrid zone. Vulnerability of each species to mortality factors may differ because of their divergent reproductive and energy-storage cycles. Received: 15 January 1999 / Accepted: 26 July 2000  相似文献

In scallops, mobilization of reserves from the adductor muscle to support maintenance and reproductive activity may impinge upon a major role of the adductor muscle, the movement of the valves during swimming and escape responses. The tropical scallop Euvola ziczac (Linnaeus 1758) invests energy reserves to different degrees during its two periods of reproduction each year. We evaluated the impact of reproductive investment on the escape responses (clapping capacity and recovery after exhaustive exercise) of E. ziczac sampled at different reproductive stages (immature, mature, spawned) during the two reproductive periods in 1997. We compared the escape response capacities with the levels of muscle energetic reserves (glycogen, proteins, and arginine phosphate) and muscle metabolic capacities [activity of the glycolytic enzymes: glycogen phosphorylase (GP), pyruvate kinase (PK), phosphofructokinase (PFK), octopine dehydrogenase (ODH), arginine kinase (AK), and the mitochondrial enzyme, citrate synthase (CS)]. Gonad size, gamete volume fraction, and levels of gonadal protein and lipid were greater for mature scallops during the first than during the second reproduction. Numbers of claps during escape responses (49–57) and levels of muscle arginine phosphate remained similar throughout the different reproductive stages in both reproductive periods. In contrast, recovery was slowed during gonadal maturation in both reproductive periods and during spawning in the first reproduction. Scallops generally took more time to regain their initial clapping capacity during the first (25–40 min) than during the second reproduction (20–30 min). Muscle glycogen decreased markedly during both gonadal maturation and spawning in both reproductions; whereas, muscle proteins decreased only in the first reproduction. The levels of most enzymes decreased during gonadal maturation in both reproductions, and also after spawning, particularly during the first reproduction. We concluded that gonadal maturation and spawning did not decrease clapping capacity of E. ziczac, but decreased its capacity to recover from exhaustive exercise most likely due to decreased levels of energetic reserves and a reduced metabolic capacity of the adductor muscle. Moreover, these effects were probably stronger during the first cycle because of the greater reproductive investment coincident with decreased food availability. The pattern of settlement over time of three broadcast spawning coral species (Cyphastrea serailia, Acanthastrea lordhowensis, and Goniastrea australensis) from the Solitary Islands (30°00′S; 153°20′E) was studied in 1995 and 1996 in order to determine the maximum length of time these larvae could remain in the water column and still retain the ability to settle and metamorphose. Larvae were maintained in aquaria and the number which had settled on biologically-conditioned tile pairs was monitored every 5 to 10 d. While the majority of larvae settled quickly after becoming competent, some larvae survived and settled for extended periods after spawning. Competency periods ranged from 26 d for C. serailia to 56 d for G. australensis and 78 d for A. lordhowensis. These data greatly extend the known competency periods for larvae of broadcast-spawning corals and indicate the potential for transport of broadcast-spawned coral larvae over large distances. Medium to long-distance larval dispersal of the species studied provides a mechanism for their widespread distribution in subtropical regions, on reefs which are often widely spaced and relatively isolated. Reproductive success among clonal taxa is often portrayed as a simple function of clone size, but reproduction in Pseudoplexaura porosa (Houtuyn), a common Caribbean gorgonian, reflects a more complex relationship between size and gamete production. Tagged colonies were sampled at two reefs in the San Blas Islands, Panama during the 1995 spawning season to determine the colony size at first reproduction, size-dependent polyp fecundities, and whole colony gonad production, and to follow the gametogenic cycle. Additional data were obtained during non-spawning months in 1984 and 1985. Of 120 colonies ranging in height from 20 to 250 cm, only colonies taller than 50 cm were reproductive. An average of 4.33 oocytes polyp−1, 560 to 800 μm in diameter, were released during monthly synchronous spawning events from June to September. Oocytes released each month developed from a group of intermediate size oocytes present at the end of the preceding month. Almost all oocytes >560 μm were released during each spawning event. Spermatogenesis was a shorter process than oogenesis. During each spawning month, mature spermaries developed from a group of <125 μm spermaries. Virtually all spermaries >190 μm were released each month, and most of the spermary volume in mature male polyps was generated anew each month of spawning. Among reproductive colonies, polyp fecundity increased with colony height from 50 to 200 cm. Per capita fecundity of >200 cm tall female colonies was lower than for 150 to 200 cm colonies, but whole colony fecundity of large colonies was greater due to the exponential increase in the number of polyps that occurs with increasing colony height. In male colonies, both polyp and colony reproductive output increased with colony height. The large amounts of sperm produced by large male colonies probably contributes to the high rates of in situ fertilization observed in P. porosa. Differences in fecundity as a function of colony size and sex suggest differences in some combination of the cost of reproduction and/or allocation of resources to reproduction. Experiments were conducted to determine the effect of four algal diets (Corallina spp., Gelidium pristoides, Ulva rigida and an equal volume mixture of these seaweeds) on growth and reproduction of the South African gastropod Turbo sarmaticus Linnaeus, 1758. The best growth rate of juveniles (up to 13.8 mm shell length and 34.26 g wet body weight increase in 12 months), reproductive fitness of mature specimens (gonad index up to 33%) and energy reserves (up to 4.76 mg glycogen/100 mg foot tissue) were achieved when T. sarmaticus was fed U. rigida or a mixed diet. In addition, the gonad index of individuals fed these diets was almost twice that of similar-sized field specimens. Juveniles fed Corallina spp. only, grew very little (only 2.4 mm shell length and 4.23 g wet body weight increase in 12 months). The reproductive fitness of adults fed on such a diet was also poor (gonad index <4.5%) and energy reserves were low (<3.5 mg glycogen/100 mg foot tissue). Along the southeastern coast of South Africa, T. sarmaticus has a distinct reproductive cycle with gametogenesis occurring from March/April until August/September, whilst maturity (gonad index = 15%) was maintained until December, after which spawning occurred until March. The taxonomic status of the Montastraea annularis species complex is unclear. Much evidence has been accumulated to support the separation into 3 species, but the presence of intermediate morphotypes and the apparent lack of effective reproductive barriers in some areas are yet unexplained. Several authors have made a call for the introduction of new traits that can be used to resolve differences among closely related coral species. We collected skeletal and tissue samples from corals within the M.annularis species complex (15 each of M.annularis, M.faveolata, and M.franksi) and 10 morphological intermediates from several reefs in the Florida Keys. Multivariate analysis of corallite skeletal measurements supported the separation of the species complex into three taxa. We detected two main fluorescence emission peaks at 480 nm (turquoise) and 515 nm (green) that were not distributed equally among the three species. Every M.annularis colony had a major turquoise fluorescence peak. Some had a weak green secondary fluorescence peak. Colonies of M.faveolata and M.franksi had either the green or turquoise fluorescence peak, but at significantly different frequencies. The intermediate morphotypes proved to be highly heterogeneous with respect to both micromorphology and fluorescence, and their nature could not be fully explained. We were not able to separate the three species using fluorescence characters alone, however this new trait does increase our understanding of the taxonomic structure within the M.annularis species complex. Between June 1994 and September 1996, a mark–recapture study was conducted in the Hinchinbrook Channel area of tropical northeastern Australia to investigate the movements of the sparid fish Acanthopagrus berda. A total of 962 A. berda were tagged, 922 within a single estuary system, Deluge Inlet. No movements among estuaries were detected. Of the fish tagged in Deluge Inlet, 12.9% were recaptured. Two movement regimes were detected: local movements (mostly <500 m) during non-spawning times, and longer migrations (up to 3.12 km) during spawning seasons, to and from a spawning site at the estuary mouth. Although there appeared to be a major spawning aggregation in the mouth of Deluge Inlet, ripe female A. berda were present in upstream sites, indicating that spawning probably occurs there also. This contrasts to the situation in South Africa, where A. berda is reported to spawn only close to estuary mouths. Differences such as this highlight our limited knowledge of variations in the reproductive biology of widespread species such as A. berda.  The endemic New Zealand echinoid, Evechinus chloroticus (Valenciennes), was sampled approximately monthly from September 1990 to October 1994 at three sites in Tory Channel, Marlborough Sounds, New Zealand. These channel sites (outer, mid and inner) were up to 20 km from the open ocean and differed in their shore type, exposure to wave action and macrophyte abundance. E. chloroticus showed an annual reproductive cycle at each site, with gametogenesis commencing in the late austral winter and spawning in summer. Maximum gonad indices (reproductive potential) varied spatially, with the outer site generally having higher maximum gonad indices than the inner site, and temporally, with maximum gonad indices occurring earlier in 3 of the 4 seasons at the outer site than the inner site. The mid and inner sites showed much greater variation in maximum gonad indices (range 15.83 to 26.99% and 11.87 to 20.90%, respectively) than the outer site (range 19.31 to 22.95%). Reproductive output (weight of gametes released per gram echinoid) also varied, with the different sites showing significantly different outputs in the different years. A regression of maximum reproductive potential against reproductive output was significant ( p < 0.001), and had a positive slope with an r 2 of 0.79. While, the initiation of gametogenesis was relatively synchronous between sites and years, and is possibly cued by increasing daylength, it progressed at different rates among populations. Spawning did show spatial and temporal variability, occurring near the time of highest sea-surface temperatures (∼15 °C). The observed variations in reproductive cycle may be related to small-scale variability in diet and environmental conditions. Furthermore, asynchronous spawning, variable spawning duration, and variable reproductive output are likely to strongly influence annual recruitment variability in E. chloroticus, with different larval subpopulations contributing unequally in different years. The ecological consequences of this, both for the ability of E. chloroticus to propagate itself in space and time and for the management of the developing E. chloroticus fishery in New Zealand, are discussed. Reproductive effort in terms of fecundity and energy allocation was studied in Ophryotrocha labronica La Greca and Bacci, 1962 a small, semicontinuous iteroparous species. In O. labronica fecundity is more or less constant throughout life, and the total fecundity of the 64 couples examined in this experiment only declined by 12% from the first to the last spawning. No linear relationship was found between fecundity and body size.␣The energy content of germinal and somatic tissues was determined by differential scanning calorimeter. The␣reproductive effort and a reproductive index based on the fifth spawning were evaluated to compare the␣patterns of energy allocation of a semicontinuous iteroparous species with semelparous and annual iteroparous species. The reproductive index ranged from 0.20 to 0.77, with an average of 0.480. The average reproductive effort was 0.840, ranging from 0.60 to 0.96. These figures highlight the enormous amount of energy that O. labronica allocates to reproductive tissues. Received: 23 July 1997 / Accepted: 20 October 1998  相似文献

The reproductive biology of the alfonsino Beryx splendens was studied by histological examinations, gonadosomatic index and macroscopic scales of maturation of a large sample of gonads. Alfonsino is a gonochoric species. The size-frequency distribution of the sex ratio was bimodal and considered to be due to size dimorphism. In New Caledonia, the breeding period of this species occurs during the southern summer, with a peak in December to January. The spawning stage is attained at a minimum fork length of 28 cm for females and 33 cm for males. The size at which 50% of the population attain sexual maturity (FL50) is 33.2 cm for females and 34.5 cm for males. Maximum potential fecundity is estimated to lie between 270 000 to 675 000 eggs for fish between 34 and 40 cm in fork length. It was possible to differentiate vegetative zones, in which juvenile alfonsino grow until they reach maturity, from reproductive zones (fishing grounds) which are inhabited by mature individuals. The larvae and juveniles could be carried from the reproductive zone to the vegetative zone by currents in an oceanic eddy system. Received: 26 April 1996 / Accepted: 20 September 1996  相似文献

The reproductive cycle of the Antarctic articulate brachiopod Liothyrella uva (Broderip, 1833) is described from monthly samples collected between September 1985 and July 1987 from a population at Signy Island, Antarctica. Spermatogenesis and oogenesis are described for the first time in this species. Surface dried-tissue masses for a standard individual (41 mm shell length) were calculated for the digestive diverticula, gut, lophophore and gonad from monthly dissections of 15 brachiopods. Seasonal patterns, with summer peaks, were observed in the digestive diverticula and gut. The lophophore and gonad masses did not exhibit seasonal trends. Females showed a sharp decrease in proportion of large oocytes between October and November in 1986, suggesting spawning during this period. There was no similar decrease during the same period in 1985. Mean percent spermatozoa measurements revealed a large increase in November 1985 and a rapid decline in December 1985. This suggested a large spawning event for males in 1985 which was not repeated the following year. These data indicate large inter-annual differences in reproductive activity as well as differences between males and females. They also suggest the possibility of sperm storage by females. Brood characteristics were also highly variable. The smallest brooding female was 31.5 mm in length. Some females brooded more than one developmental stage simultaneously, and variation in brood size (numbers of embryos or larvae held in the lophophore) and brood composition between individuals was high. All samples collected throughout the 2 yr period contained some females with broods. The data suggest that the reproductive strategy of L. uva is highly plastic, and that there may be three reproductive periodicities on seasonal, annual and inter-annual time scales. A mass synchronous spawning of the sea urchin Evechinus chloroticus (Valenciennes) was observed in situ in Doubtful Sound, a large New Zealand fiord. Spawning occurred between 17:30 hrs and 18:30 hrs on 27 January 1994 and coincided with a full moon, spring tides and a period of decreasing sea temperatures. During spawning, the sea urchins formed a dense spawning aggregation of both sexes, with >90% of the urchins observed spawning at the time. Spawned gametes clouded the water column, and some were eaten by small labrid fish species. The spawning, which may have been as widespread as 40 km, marked a 42 to 50% decrease in gonad indices and resulted in a widespread, dense cohort of  E. chloroticus larvae within the fiord.  A reproductive strategy consisting of deep- water spawning and egg-care was inferred for the midwater squid Gonatus onyx Young, 1972. Brooding females and associated eggs and hatchlings, captured between 1250 and 1750 m depth off southern California, are described. Brooding females appear to be senescent and lack tentacles. Large eggs of this species (3 mm) at cold temperatures (3 °C at capture depth) may require as long as 9 mo to develop. The high lipid content of the digestive gland in adult females of this species may provide fuel to support such an extended “brooding” period. The wedge sole Dicologlossa cuneata (Moreau, 1881) is a coastal species that lives along the inner shelf waters of the Gulf of Cadiz down to a depth of 115 m. Its fishery, the size composition of the exploited population, and its reproduction have been studied on the basis of data acquired from commercial statistics from 1984 to 1994 and from sampling carried out during 1993 and 1994. The relative abundance of the species and its geographic and bathymetric distribution have been examined by analysis of four trawl surveys carried out from 1992 to 1994. D. cuneata is captured mainly by the trawl fleet, and to a lesser extent by gillnet gears. Wedge sole fishery has a marked seasonality. Size-frequency distributions from commercial samples and from bottom-trawl surveys are very similar, ranging from 12 to 26 cm total body length (TL). D. cuneata is a “repeat-spawner”. Peak spawning is from January to May. Females attain sexual maturity at 18 cm TL, while sexually mature males have been observed at 15 cm TL. The flexibility of the spawning strategy of D. cuneata throughout its distribution range is discussed. The scarcity of small specimens in the monthly samples and sequential spawning throughout the year prevented the estimation of growth parameters by means of length-frequency analysis. D. cuneata is present in greatest abundances in the sandy–muddy bottoms of the Guadalquivir River mouth at 15 to 30 m depth. Its optimum habitat coincides with the principal commercial fishing grounds. The possibility of reproductive vertical migration is discussed, but more precise data are needed before a viable hypothesis can be made. Received: 1 July 1997 / Accepted: 27 November 1997  相似文献

The mussels Mytilus edulis L. and M. trossulus Gould are found sympatrically in most areas of Newfoundland, with a low frequency of hybrids. To assess the potential for reproductive isolation, we sampled mussels from three sites in an eastern Newfoundland Bay from May–October 1996 to determine if there were differences in the reproductive cycles of the two species and their natural hybrids. In mussels with sheil lengths of 38–42 mm, males and females with mature gametes were dominant in June for M. edulis and hybrids, while M. trossulus showed a lower frequency of individuals with mature gametes. M. trossulus and hybrids spawned over a prolonged period (from late spring to early autumn) compared with most M. edulis individuals that spawned over a period of 2–3 weeks in July. This asynchrony in spawning activity between the two species may partially explain the low frequency of hybrids found in previous studies of these mussel populations. Female and male hybrids between M. edulis and M. trossulus showed normal gonad development, ripening and spawning, providing an opportunity for the introgression of genes between the two species. M. trossulus had a higher reproductive output than M. edulis of similar shell length, while hybrids showed intermediate values of reproductive output. M. trossulus females produced smaller eggs than either M. edulis or hybrids. Differences in reproductive traits may partially explain the maintenance of the mussel hybrid zone in Newfoundland.  Although oysters are commercially very important in Brazil, there is still much dispute about the number of Crassostrea species occurring on the Brazilian coast. The dispute is centered around C. brasiliana, considered by some authors to be a junior synonym of C. rhizophorae. In this paper we compared, by allozyme electrophoresis, sympatric and allopatric populations of the two putative species. Of the 17 loci analysed, five were diagnostic for the two species in sympatry (gene identity = 0.46 to 0.47), clearly demonstrating that they are distinct biological species. Heterozygosity (h) levels were high for both species (h = 0.24 to 0.28), and no heterozygote deficiencies were observed in any population (local inbreeding, F IS  = 0.141; P > 0.70). Levels of population structure in C. rhizophorae along 1300 km of coast were very low (population inbreeding, F ST  = 0.026; P > 0.15), indicating that the planktonic, planktotrophic larvae of these species are capable of long-range dispersal. The reproductive biology of Antipathes fiordensis Grange, a species endemic to south-western New Zealand, was followed from April 1994 to May 1995. Ten colonies were individually tagged in Doubtful Sound and sampled on a monthly basis in order to determine their reproductive activity. The fecundity of each of the five tagged female colonies was determined by estimating the total number of polyps per colony from photographs of each colony and by planimetry, the proportion of gravid polyps per colony, and the mean number of oocytes per gravid polyp. In addition, 56 colonies were sampled in March 1995 to estimate the sex ratio, height at sexual maturity, and mean sizes of females and males. A. fiordensis was found to be a dioecious species which, in the absence of gonads in the polyps, has no obvious external morphological differences between the sexes. Broadcast spawning of gametes is the likely mode of reproduction. Gametogenesis began in November 1994 and was highly synchronous within and between colonies, with spawning occurring in March 1995. The sex ratio in adults was 1:1. Colonies reached sexual maturity between the heights of 70 and 105 cm which, based on existing estimates of growth rate, corresponds to a minimum age for sexual maturity of about 31 yr. The largest oocytes measured ranged from 100 to 140 μm in size. Female colonies produced between 1.3 and 16.9 million oocytes, with the larger colonies dominating the reproductive output of the population.  The reproductive biology of female Penaeus japonicus Bate was investigated in the Ariake Sea and Tachibana Bay (located outside the Ariake Sea), Japan from 1994 to 1996. Interannual, seasonal, individual female body size and spatial influences on the incidence of spawning were examined. The proportion of inseminated females, increased with increasing body size up to 170 mm body length (BL) and decreased thereafter. The minimum size at maturity was similar between years; 130 to 140 mm BL. The minimum size of individuals with developing ovaries or spermatophores differed from that of ripe females by 20 to 25 mm. Spawning occurred in the central part of the Ariake Sea and Tachibana Bay but rarely in the inner part. P. japonicus had a clear reproductive cycle. Spawning started earlier and ended later, occurring from mid-May to mid-October, in the eastern central part of and outside of the Ariake Sea compared with the western central part, where spawning occurred from mid-June to mid-September. Spawning dynamics differed across seasons, body sizes and areas but not across years. The seasonal peak in the proportion of ripe females varied with body size. In small individuals (130 to 169 mm BL), no peak was observed, whereas in large individuals (>170 mm BL) the proportion of ripe individuals peaked in June. The proportion of ripe individuals increased with increasing body size and was high outside the Ariake Sea. Factors causing the variation in spawning dynamics are discussed.
