The endemic New Zealand echinoid, Evechinus chloroticus (Valenciennes), was sampled approximately monthly from September 1990 to October 1994 at three sites in Tory Channel, Marlborough Sounds, New Zealand. These channel sites (outer, mid and inner) were up to 20 km from the open ocean and differed in their shore type, exposure to wave action and macrophyte abundance. E. chloroticus showed an annual reproductive cycle at each site, with gametogenesis commencing in the late austral winter and spawning in summer. Maximum gonad indices (reproductive potential) varied spatially, with the outer site generally having higher maximum gonad indices than the inner site, and temporally, with maximum gonad indices occurring earlier in 3 of the 4 seasons at the outer site than the inner site. The mid and inner sites showed much greater variation in maximum gonad indices (range 15.83 to 26.99% and 11.87 to 20.90%, respectively) than the outer site (range 19.31 to 22.95%). Reproductive output (weight of gametes released per gram echinoid) also varied, with the different sites showing significantly different outputs in the different years. A regression of maximum reproductive potential against reproductive output was significant ( p < 0.001), and had a positive slope with an r 2 of 0.79. While, the initiation of gametogenesis was relatively synchronous between sites and years, and is possibly cued by increasing daylength, it progressed at different rates among populations. Spawning did show spatial and temporal variability, occurring near the time of highest sea-surface temperatures (∼15 °C). The observed variations in reproductive cycle may be related to small-scale variability in diet and environmental conditions. Furthermore, asynchronous spawning, variable spawning duration, and variable reproductive output are likely to strongly influence annual recruitment variability in E. chloroticus, with different larval subpopulations contributing unequally in different years. The ecological consequences of this, both for the ability of E. chloroticus to propagate itself in space and time and for the management of the developing E. chloroticus fishery in New Zealand, are discussed. Direct observations of predation on 436 individuals of the sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus (Lamarck) were carried out in infralittoral rocky bottoms (between 5 and 20 m deep) in three Mediterranean marine reserves. The predator guild was composed of six fish species, the sparids Diplodus sargus and D. vulgaris being the main predators, and the labrid Coris julis a major predator of juvenile sea urchins. Four species attempted but failed to open sea urchins. The scavenger guild was most rich in species, with 17 species observed. Predation was size-dependent; the size of predators increased with increasing size of the sea urchins. The presence of two feeding guilds is suggested, one composed of sparids (Diplodus spp.), able to kill juvenile and adult sea urchins, and the other composed of labrids (mainly C. julis), which feed on juvenile sea urchins. To avoid the extension of overgrazed, barren areas created by P. lividus populations, fisheries' regulations should focus on major sea-urchin predators, chiefly D. sargus, D. vulgaris and C. julis. Field sampling and laboratory experiments examined whether ultraviolet radiation (UVR) affects the reproduction or the accumulation of mycosporine-like amino acids (MAAs) and ascorbic acid in ovaries of the green sea urchin Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis (Müller). Ovaries of sea urchins sampled across a depth gradient (0.5–10 m) in March 1998 did not differ in their gonadal index, or in concentrations of MAAs, or ascorbic acid. Concentrations of MAAs and ascorbic acid in ovaries were higher in sea urchins collected from a kelp bed compared with those collected from a community of crustose coralline algae. The concentrations of MAAs in ovaries varied seasonally, peaking in March, when sea urchins had high gonadal indices just before spawning. Ovaries of sea urchins maintained on controlled diets from October 1997 to April 1998 accumulated significantly higher concentrations of MAAs when fed a diet rich in MAAs than did ovaries of sea urchins fed an alga lacking MAAs, but the gonadal indices did not differ between diets. Sea urchins accumulated principally one MAA, shinorine, but not others that were available in high concentrations in their diet. Neither the gonadal index nor the ovarian concentrations of MAAs were affected by daily exposure of adult urchins to UVR for 6 months. Concentrations of ascorbic acid in ovaries did not differ among diets or UV-treatments. The percentages of nutritive phagocytes and gametic cells were not affected by diet or UVR, and did not co-vary with concentrations of MAAs or ascorbic acid in ovaries. These data support previous demonstrations that female sea urchins accumulate MAAs from their diet of macroalgae, but further show that the accumulation is selective for specific MAAs, particularly shinorine, and that adult S. droebachiensis do not accumulate MAAs in their ovaries or eggs in response to UV-exposure. These are also the first experimental studies to address whether MAAs are affected by or regulate gametogenesis, and indicate that they do not. Green sea urchins, Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis OF Müller, collected off the coast of New Hampshire, USA, in late February 1995, were brought into the laboratory and fed an artificial diet ad libitum, and subjected to a photoperiod advanced by 4 months. During this study, temperatures and salinities for experimental urchins mirrored those recorded at the collection site. We examined the effects of changes in feeding regime and photoperiod on gametogenesis and compared the experimental urchins with those from the source population. During the 7-month period, experimental urchins showed no detectable changes in mean test height or diameter. Experimental urchins had a significantly higher gonad index (GI) in March, April and May (18 ± 6%) compared with field urchins in March (11 ± 3%). Subsequently, experimental urchins had a mean monthly GI of 25 to 30%, while the mean GI for field urchins was 11 to 13%. Gonial cell mitosis and gametogenesis occurred earlier in experimental male and female urchins compared with field urchins. Stereological and histological observations and stage–frequency data showed that the ovaries of experimental urchins were large because of the accelerated development of nutritive phagocytes, the volume fraction (V v) of which was 89 to 90% of the gonad, while new vitellogenic primary oocytes occupied <1% V v. In males, stereological and histological observations and stage–frequency data suggested a mobilization of materials from the nutritive phagocytes beginning between June and August, i.e. earlier than in females, and, by September, new gametes occupied a V v of 49 ± 3% of the testes. Oocyte size–frequency distributions demonstrated that most primary oocytes were <80 μm in diameter between March and September, suggesting that cold temperatures may be needed for completion of vitellogenesis. We describe changes in the two principal cell types in the germinal epithelium of urchin gonads and indicate how knowledge of their population dynamics may be useful in aquaculture applications. From September to November 1991, UV-absorbing mycosporine-like amino acids (MAAs) were monitored in a natural population of the sea urchin Sterechinusneumayeri from a coastal area of Anvers Island (Antarctic Peninsula). MAA concentrations were determined for specific tissues (gonad, digestive tract and body wall) from adults collected at four depths (intertidal, 8, 15 and 24 m). Four MAAs were identified: mycosporine-glycine, shinorine, porphyra-334 and paly-thine. Concentrations of MAAs among replicate individuals varied considerably. Ovaries had high concentrations of MAAs (84 to 1389 μg g−1 dry wt), while testes had non-detectable levels. The relative abundance of specific MAAs in ovaries appeared to be related to the spawning cycle. Digestive-tract samples had MAA concentrations as high as 3000 μg g−1 dry wt, but the mean MAA content in intertidal individuals decreased by 70% over 3 mo during spring. The body walls of sea urchins had very low amounts of MAAs (≤ 0.08 μg g−1 dry wt). There were significant depth differences in the␣total MAA content of the ovary ( p <0.001), ( p <0.015), digestive tract ( p <0.001), and body wall with organisms from the intertidal and 8 m depth having the highest concentrations of MAAs. Biological dosimetry indicated that UV-B (280 to 320 nm) wavelengths penetrated 3 to 7 m below the sea ice during the study period. The total MAA content in ovaries decreased with depth on all sample dates; however, the MAA content of the digestive tract and body wall did not exhibit a consistent pattern of change with depth. The MAA content of tissues did not change significantly with the temporal gradient of light exposure that was established by both ozone depletion and increasing photoperiod, except in the digestive tract sampled from intertidal specimens. Adult urchins are probably well-protected from UV exposure by the water column and a calcareous test; however, the results of this study suggest that, even under ice cover, depth of habitation is a determinant of MAA content in S. neumayeri. Large daily and seasonal fluctuations in the light regime, which are characteristic of Antarctic coastal environments, apparently do not provide reliable cues to elicit a detectable, temporal, biochemical response. We investigated the effects of food quality and quantity on reproductive maturation and growth of juveniles of Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis (Müller) in a 22 month laboratory experiment in which we fed sea urchins four diets: (1) kelp (Laminaria spp.) for 6 d wk−1 and mussel (Mytilus spp.) flesh for 1 d wk−1 (KM); (2) kelp for 7 d wk−1 (high ration, KH); (3) kelp for 1 d wk−1 (low ration, KL) and (4) no food other than encrusting coralline algae (NF). At their first and second opportunity for reproduction, all sea urchins in the KM and KH treatments, and most in the KL treatment were reproductively mature, whereas all sea urchins in the NF treatment remained immature. Gonad index differed significantly among all fed treatments at first and second reproduction, and was highest in the KM and lowest in the KL treatment. Gonad index was similar in both sexes at first reproduction, but it was higher in females than in males at second reproduction. Diet had little or no effect on the relative abundance of spermatocytes, spermatozoa, or nutritive phagocytes in testes at first and second reproduction. In ovaries, nutritive phagocytes were significantly more abundant in females in the KM and KH treatments than in the KL treatment at first reproduction, and significantly more abundant in unfed (NF) than fed (KM, KH, KL) females at second reproduction. Mean oocyte size was similar in all fed females at first reproduction, but significantly larger in fed than unfed females at second reproduction. Mean ovum size was similar in all fed females in both reproductive periods. Increase in test diameter was greatest in the KM treatment and smallest in the KL treatment; sea urchins in the NF treatment decreased slightly in size. Survival was 95 to 100% in all fed sea urchins but significantly lower in unfed ones. The feeding rate on kelp was significantly greater in the KL than the KM and KH treatments. In the KM treatment, the feeding rate on kelp increased significantly over a 6 d period after mussel flesh was provided. Our results demonstrate that a diet of high food quality and quantity accelerates reproductive maturation and growth rate, and enhances gonad production and survival in juvenile and young adult S. droebachiensis. These findings contribute to our understanding of the reproductive ecology of S. droebachiensis in habitats with differing food supplies (e.g., kelp beds and barrens). Our results also can be used to improve aquacultural practices for sea urchins. Received: 3 June 1998 / Accepted: 2 February 1999  相似文献

Reproduction in the sea urchin Centrostephanus rodgersii was examined in two types of habitats (“barrens”, i.e. habitats characterised by the high crustose coralline algal cover typical of urchin-barren grounds, and by the absence of macroalgae; and “fringe”, i.e. habitats characterised by a high macroalgal biomass and few C. rodgersii) at four locations in New South Wales. The four locations: the Solitary Islands, Sydney, Ulladulla and Eden, span the distribution of C.␣rodgersii from the subtropics at its northern limit to temperate waters near its southern limit. Histology and estimates of gonad retrieval rate (GRR) from January 1994 to October 1995 indicated that reproduction was synchronous at all locations. An increase in the tempo of gametogenesis in May and onset of spawning in June at all locations is consistent with entrainment in response to exogenous factors. Over the range studied, C. rodgersii experienced relatively similar daylength cycles and contrasting sea-temperature cycles. Short days and lunar conditions coinciding with the solstice appear likely proximate cues for the onset of spawning. The major difference in reproduction among locations was in the duration of spawning. In the southern parts of its range breeding occurred over a 5 to 6 mo period, whereas at the Solitary Islands it lasted ≃1 mo. At most locations the GRRs were significantly higher in the fringe habitat than in the barrens habitat. The lower reproductive output of urchins in the barrens habitat was attributed to the food-poor conditions typical of this habitat. The developing fishery for C. rodgersii is likely to be most effective from March to early May. Urchins from barrens areas may not provide sufficient yield to warrant harvesting.  The spawning patterns of two penaeid prawns, Metapenaeus endeavouri (Schmitt) and M. ensis (De Haan), were examined from data collected at 45 stations between March 1986 and March 1992. An index of population fecundity based on the abundance, proportion and fecundity of sexually mature females was used as a measure of spawning output of the prawn stock. The population fecundity index for M. ensis was higher than that for M. endeavouri. The monthly population fecundity index for M. endeavouri varied markedly among years, while that for M. ensis was consistent among years. Spawning of M. endeavouri occurred year-round, while that of M. ensis was concentrated mainly in spring (September to November). For M. endeavouri, a minor spawning, derived from a relatively small number of summer spawners, occurred in the 20 to 30 m offshore waters in summer. In early summer (after May), the major spawning group consisted of large females from the winter-spawning cohort, and the spawning area shifted to depths of 30 to 60 m. In winter (July), the major spawning, derived from the winter-spawning cohort, occurred at depths of 20 to 40 m. For M. ensis, the major spawning, derived from the spring-spawning cohort, was observed in depths <50 m and was concentrated particularly in inshore waters (<20 m) in spring. In autumn, the spawning output was mainly from the autumn-spawning cohort, which comprised but a small number of individuals. In winter, the major spawning group again consisted of the large females from the spring-spawning cohort, and spawning increased in the oceanic waters (>50 m). These results suggest that mature female M. endeavouri and M. ensis move offshore (>40 m) by May and July, respectively, and return to shallow waters (<35 m) in July and November, respectively. The monthly reproduction patterns of both species in the “effective spawning” area showed that the major spawning season for M. endeavouri is August to October and that for M. ensis is September to December. Between June 1994 and September 1996, a mark–recapture study was conducted in the Hinchinbrook Channel area of tropical northeastern Australia to investigate the movements of the sparid fish Acanthopagrus berda. A total of 962 A. berda were tagged, 922 within a single estuary system, Deluge Inlet. No movements among estuaries were detected. Of the fish tagged in Deluge Inlet, 12.9% were recaptured. Two movement regimes were detected: local movements (mostly <500 m) during non-spawning times, and longer migrations (up to 3.12 km) during spawning seasons, to and from a spawning site at the estuary mouth. Although there appeared to be a major spawning aggregation in the mouth of Deluge Inlet, ripe female A. berda were present in upstream sites, indicating that spawning probably occurs there also. This contrasts to the situation in South Africa, where A. berda is reported to spawn only close to estuary mouths. Differences such as this highlight our limited knowledge of variations in the reproductive biology of widespread species such as A. berda. To assess the effects of both temperature and food ration on gonad growth and oogenesis of the green sea urchin, Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis (O.F. Müller), individuals collected December 1996 (winter experiment) and June 1997 (summer experiment) were maintained for 3 months in one of four experimental treatments: (1) 3 °C and fed ad libitum (high ration), (2) 3 °C and fed one-seventh of the maximum ration (low ration), and (3) 12 °C and fed the high ration; (4) 12 °C and fed the low ration. All individuals were fed an artificial diet and exposed to only 1 h of light every day. At the end of both experiments, mean gonad indices of sea urchins fed the high ration had increased significantly (11–24% and 6–19% in the winter and summer experiments, respectively), while the gonad indices of individuals fed the low ration did not change. At the high ration (both experiments), the increase in gonad index of sea urchins occurred primarily as the result of a significant increase in the mass of nutritive phagocytes, as revealed by histological analyses. Primary oocytes were significantly larger in individuals held at 3 °C than at 12 °C throughout the winter experiment, regardless of food ration; during the summer experiment, primary oocytes were significantly larger in individuals receiving the high ration, regardless of the temperature at which they were held. These results suggest that: (1) food availability is the most important factor regulating energy storage and the relative size of gonads throughout the year, (2) temperature affects the rate of growth and maturation of primary oocytes during the later stages of oogenesis, and (3) once gametogenesis has been initiated, mature ova will be produced, even under conditions of low food availability. Conditions of high food availability in summer and low temperature in winter would thus favor reproductive output in sea urchin populations. The endogenous rhythm of oxygen consumption in juvenile spotted sea bass (Lateolabrax sp.) was measured to test the effects of sudden changes in salinity on the metabolic activity. Mean oxygen consumption rates of this euryhaline fish decreased by 13.5 to 16.0% and 25.3 to 36.4% when they were transferred from 31.5 to 15‰ seawater and to fresh water (0‰), respectively. The maximum rate of oxygen consumption was observed between 18:00 and 19:00 hrs local time, 1 to 2 h before sunset, even though they were kept in constant darkness. The peaks of oxygen consumption occurred in 23.2- and 23.3-h intervals, which correspond with a circadian rhythm, as revealed by maximum entropy spectral analysis. A markedly weakened rhythm in oxygen consumption occurred from 8 to 10 d after onset of the experiments. This study indicates that spotted sea bass can withstand sudden drops in salinity from 31.5‰ to fresh water, and yet maintain a regular though somewhat dampened endogenous rhythm of oxygen consumption.  Early development of the Antarctic sea urchin Sterechinus neumayeri was examined under two differ-ent culture regimes: one to simulate development near-bottom (“demersal development”) and the other to simulate the development of embryos in the water column (“pelagic development”). When embryos of both treatments reached the hatching blastula stage at 5 d post-fertilization (−1.5 °C), the blastulae that had undergone demersal development evidenced significant differences (by ANOVA or suitable non-parametric comparison) in the following: a thicker blastoderm layer (12%, P < 0.001), higher ash-free dry weights (19%, P < 0.01), lower mass-specific respiration rates (50%, P < 0.001), higher incorporation rates of 35S-methionine into protein (23%, P < 0.003), and a differential pattern of protein synthesis. When embryos developed demersally, they remained in the jelly-coat material released with the eggs at spawning. Quantitative isolation of this jelly-coat material in S. neumayeri demonstrated that it contained a significant amount of organic matter, 115 ng ash-free dry mass per egg, equivalent to 17% of the egg's initial organic mass. Uptake of external nutrients during embryogenesis may be a significant component of the physiological energetics of this polar invertebrate by allowing the utilization of jelly-coat material released by a female during spawning. The pattern of settlement over time of three broadcast spawning coral species (Cyphastrea serailia, Acanthastrea lordhowensis, and Goniastrea australensis) from the Solitary Islands (30°00′S; 153°20′E) was studied in 1995 and 1996 in order to determine the maximum length of time these larvae could remain in the water column and still retain the ability to settle and metamorphose. Larvae were maintained in aquaria and the number which had settled on biologically-conditioned tile pairs was monitored every 5 to 10 d. While the majority of larvae settled quickly after becoming competent, some larvae survived and settled for extended periods after spawning. Competency periods ranged from 26 d for C. serailia to 56 d for G. australensis and 78 d for A. lordhowensis. These data greatly extend the known competency periods for larvae of broadcast-spawning corals and indicate the potential for transport of broadcast-spawned coral larvae over large distances. Medium to long-distance larval dispersal of the species studied provides a mechanism for their widespread distribution in subtropical regions, on reefs which are often widely spaced and relatively isolated. Green sea urchin, Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis (O.F. Müller), populations are being depleted rapidly in the Gulf of Maine and there is justified concern that the potential of this free-spawner to produce larvae may be severely inhibited. We evaluated the opposing effects of different population densities on gonad development and fertilization success, using population surveys and fertilization experiments. We determined gonad indices (gonad mass/body mass) over a range of population densities (0.1 to 250 ind. m−2) at seven sites in coastal Maine, USA, sampled at two depths (5 and 15 m). At shallow sites, we found that gonad indices declined by 50% over the 1500-fold range in adult population density. At 15 m deep locations, gonad mass was consistently low and did not vary significantly with density. Patterns of macroalgal abundance suggest urchins at high density and in deeper water were food limited. Because macroalgal cover co-varies inversely with sea urchin density, we designed field experiments to determine the interaction between sea urchin density and kelp canopy on fertilization success. On square arrays we manipulated the spacing of simulated urchins, but held their numbers constant (five sperm-filled syringes interspersed with four Nitex mesh egg containers permeable to sperm). These experiments, simulating the observed range of natural density, suggested that (1) fertilization rates decreased many times faster than individual gamete production increased over the same range in density, and (2) kelp increased fertilization success at high density when eggs were within 25 cm of a sperm source, but not when spaced 1 m apart. Additional laboratory fertilization experiments at ambient temperatures (3 to 5 °C) indicated that diluted sperm were viable for <1 h, but egg viability was virtually unchanged for >8 h. In short, to the individual the reproductive benefits of aggregating appear to outweigh the costs; and while sperm may be limiting at low population density, eggs may remain viable long enough to be fertilized by sperm from more distant males. Experiments were performed to determine how ultraviolet radiation (UVR) in the environmentally relevant range affects development of the sea urchin Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis (Müller) and whether mycosporine-like amino acids (MAAs), present in the early life stages, reduce UV-induced damage. Eggs, embryos, and larvae contained five MAAs having absorption maxima ranging from 320 to 334 nm. Eggs contained principally shinorine and porphyra-334, which absorb maximally at 334 nm and half-maximally at 312 and 348 nm, spanning much of the environmental range of biologically effective UVR. Concentrations of MAAs remained constant in unirradiated embryos through the gastrula stage, but decreased significantly in two-armed pluteus larvae. Daily exposure to combined photosynthetically active radiation (PAR, 400–700 nm) and UVR did not affect the concentration of MAAs in these embryos up to the two-armed pluteus stage. Prism larvae of sea urchins and the sand dollar Echinarachnius parma (Lamarck) did not accumulate shinorine from the surrounding seawater. Daily exposure of embryos to UVA (320–400 nm) and UVB (295–320 nm) radiation in the presence of PAR induced delays and abnormalities during development, and removing UVB eliminated this effect. Abnormalities in embryos included thickening of the blastoderm wall, filling of the blastocoel by abnormal cells, exogastrulation, and formation of abnormal spicules. The percentage of embryos that developed normally was lower in batches of embryos exposed to PAR + UVA + UVB, except in embryos from urchins maintained on MAA-rich diets. In all cases, the percentage of PAR + UVA + UVB-exposed embryos that developed normally was positively related to the concentration of MAAs in eggs from which the embryos developed. Thus, the MAAs found in S. droebachiensis embryos protect them against UVB-induced abnormalities during their development to at least the four-armed pluteus larval stage. We monitored the reproductive cycle of Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis (OF Müller) between April 1993 and August 1995 in kelp beds, barren grounds and grazing fronts at both a wave-exposed and a sheltered site along the Atlantic coast of Nova Scotia. Gonad index and histological analyses showed that S. droebachiensis has an annual reproductive cycle that is synchronous across sites and habitats, and between females and males. Spawning occurs in March/April of each year but a small proportion of sea urchins in the study populations also spawned in fall 1995. During most of the year, sea urchins in kelp beds and grazing fronts have a higher gonad index than those in barren grounds. Gonad indices also tended to be higher at the wave-exposed than the sheltered site. Interannual variability in peak gonad index was significant in the barren grounds at the wave-exposed site and in the grazing front at the sheltered site. The gametogenic cycle is characterized by six stages based on the abundance of nutritive and germinal/gametic cells. Nutritive phagocytes are abundant after spawning and replaced by increasing numbers of germinal and gametic cells as the gametogenic cycle progresses. The temporal patterns of abundance of each cell type were similar among habitats indicating that the gonads were qualitatively similar despite large differences in gonadal mass. The quantity of gut contents (ratio of food volume to body volume) was similar among habitats, but the quality (percentage of organic material) tended to be higher in kelp beds and grazing fronts than in barren grounds suggesting that differences in gonad index of S. droebachiensis in different habitats are related to differences in diet. The high density of sea urchins in grazing fronts combined with their high fecundity suggests that they make the greatest contribution, per unit area, to the overall larval pool. The current contribution deals with the reproductive biology of a genus endemic to Brazil –Mussismilia Ortmann, 1890 – including all three species of the genus: M. braziliensis (Verrill, 1868), M. hartti (Verrill, 1868), and M. hispida (Verrill, 1902), which occur sympatrically in the studied area, the Abrolhos Reef Complex, Brazil. Sexuality patterns, modes of reproduction, synchrony and spawning periods are reported, and were determined by histological examination of material. All three species started to develop female and male gametes over different periods in the same breeding season. The three species are probably broadcast spawners, since no embryos or planulae were observed in any species at any given time of the year. Each reproductive cycle lasted approximately 11 months. Oogenesis and spermatogenesis started in different periods, with spermaries appearing in approximately the eighth month of ovary development and lasting about 3 months. Reproductive cycles were annual. Spawning probably occurred in consecutive months in each species. In M. braziliensis, spawning presumably happened between March and the middle of May in 1996 and 1997. Evidence suggested that spawning events of M. hispida took place between the end of April and mid-June. M. hartti may have spawned between September and November. The data presented here suggested that all studied species have at least one exclusive spawning period, asynchronically with the others. A possible exception may be the simultaneous (or close) spawnings of M. braziliensis and M. hispida in May. It is suggested that asynchrony in spawning periods among species may reduce the chance of hybridization, gamete waste and the competition for settlement surfaces. The occurrence of extended spawning periods for each species may also reduce the risks of reproductive failure, due to temporary adverse conditions. We demonstrated that environmentally relevant levels of UVA and UVB can reduce sperm motility (UVA: by 38–58%; UVB: by 42–85%; P < 0.05) and subsequently fertilisation success (UVA: by 38–72%; UVB: by 91–98%; P < 0.05) of urchins (Anthocidaris crassispina) in a dose-dependent manner, implicating that recruitment of urchin populations might be reduced by UVR (ultraviolet radiation) prevailing in their natural habitats. Concomitantly, reactive oxygen species (ROS) production was enhanced by UVA and UVB in a dose-dependent manner (UVA: by 1.3-fold; UVB: by 6.6–7.3-fold; P < 0.05), and the increase in ROS resulted in an increase in lipid peroxidation (LPO) in urchin sperm (UVA: by 4.2–7.2-fold; UVB: by 2.3–2.7-fold; P < 0.05). This study demonstrated that ROS production and oxidative damages enhanced by UVR may account for the observed declines in sperm motility and fertilisation, and suggests that levels of UVR prevailing in the environment may pose a significant threat to the reproductive success of natural populations of urchins spawning in shallow waters.  相似文献

Contents of free amino acids (FAA), protein and ammonium ions together with rates of ammonia excretion and oxygen consumption were measured in order to study the role of FAA as an energy substrate in developing eggs and larvae of seabass (Lates calcarifer) maintained in seawater (30 ppt) at 28 °C without feeding. Initially eggs contained 25.3 nmol ind−1 of FAA of which 21.5 nmol was rapidly utilised by the developing eggs and larvae during the period up to 40 h post spawning (PS) when nearly all the yolk had been resorbed. During the same period, a net increase in protein content of 1.7 μg ind−1 was observed, indicating that the major part of the amino acids lost from the free pool had been polymerised into body proteins. Assuming that the balance of the FAA after protein synthesis was used entirely for energy metabolism, FAA appeared to be an important energy substrate during the embryonic stages (2 to 16 h PS); after hatching, the contribution of FAA to energy metabolism was less significant. From 50 h PS until the end of the study period at 100 h PS, amino acids derived from somatic protein were used for energy metabolism. For the overall period from just after spawning up to 100 h PS, the data indicate that ca. 14% of the total aerobic energy metabolism was derived from amino acid catabolism. The distribution and abundance of Japanese common squid [Todarodes pacificus (Steenstrup, 1880)] paralarvae off southern Kyushu Island near the Kuroshio were examined in relation to water types in the region. Surveys were conducted in 1996 and 1997 using paired, 70 cm diameter Bongo nets. Temperature–salinity plots from 0, 50 and 100 m depths were used to assign sampling stations to three water types: inshore, mixing and Kuroshio. In total, 4103 T. pacificus paralarvae were collected at 59 of 72 stations. Catch densities at positive stations ranged between 8 and 4282 ind./50 m2 sea surface area. Catches during both years were highest in mixing waters, followed by inshore and Kuroshio waters. Total catches were highest just north of the oceanographic front at the inshore edge of the Kuroshio and declined with increasing distance away from the front. Catches of paralarvae ≤1.0 mm mantle length also peaked near the front. In both years, ≥85% of all paralarvae and ≥69% of those ≤1.0 mm mantle length occurred less than 25 km from the front. We conclude that most spawning off southwest Kyushu occurs near the frontal zone, where Kuroshio and inshore waters meet. Received: 18 November 1998 / Accepted: 11 May 1999  相似文献
