A practical, inexpensive computer model for estimating the level of blood carboxyhemoglobin (percent COHb) as a function of time for measured carbon monoxide concentrations (ppm CO) was developed from data from published studies on the assimilation of CO into the blood of human subjects. The model was designed to consider more realistically the dynamic characteristics of urban CO concentrations measured continuously at air monitoring stations, and it was applied to a year's CO data measured at the San Jose CA, air monitoring station (8760 hourly values).

The results indicate that the model can be used by local air pollution control agencies to calculate and print out estimated COHb levels alongside continuous CO concentration data. According to the model, the National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) for CO sometimes were violated in San Jose without exceeding 2% COHb, as well as the converse: 2% COHb was exceeded without violating the standards. The model's estimated COHb levels also provided an advance warning of impending violation of the 8-hr CO NAAQS, and analysis of the model's response to CO "spikes" suggests that averaging periods as short as 10 or 15 minutes are necessary to preserve completely the dynamic characteristics of ambient CO monitoring data. These findings suggest that the margin of safety included in the current CO NAAQS, would not be the same if the actual time variation of measured CO concentrations is taken into account.  相似文献

A critical problem arises if one attempts to compare data from air monitoring stations in different cities, because there are so many differences in monitoring site locations. Some air monitoring stations are on the 6 th and 8 th floors of tall buildings in downtown areas; some are at ground level beside streets with heavy traffic; some are in residential areas with little traffic or industry; and some are in suburban or nonurban areas. Unfortunately, there is ample evidence that the location of a monitoring station relative to nearby sources (such as highways) affects the values observed at the station, particularly for carbon monoxide and other vehicular pollutants. Thus, a standardized system of site selection, such as the one proposed here, appears essential to improve the comparability and meaningfulness of data obtained from different air monitoring stations throughout the Nation.  相似文献

Air pollution analyzers, because of inherent lags and response times, will not produce an exact record of pollutant concentrations. A procedure is described for determining the transfer function for an analyzer system. This transfer function is applied to the recorded output to produce a record of the actual atmospheric pollutant concentration at the inlet to the system. This procedure is applied to the carbon monoxide analyzer of the Bay Area Air Pollution Control District monitoring station in San Jose. Results show that variations in peak heights of more than 50% can exist between actual and recorded values.  相似文献

Abstract

This paper describes a statistic to quantify spatial representativeness for the air measurements of an urban fixed-site ambient air monitoring station. The application of such a statistic of representativeness has also been successfully demonstrated by two data sets collected at the Gu-Ting monitoring station in Taipei. By measuring NO2 at 22 sites simultaneously around the Gu-Ting station, the statistic has characterized different degrees of spatial representativeness for nitrogen dioxide (NO2) at various areas and microenvironments surrounding this fixed-site monitoring station. By measuring ambient air concentrations at six sites sequentially around the Gu-Ting station, the statistic has also characterized different degrees of representativeness for particulates less than 10 urn in size—(PM10), carbon monoxide (CO), sulfur dioxide (SO2), ozone (O3), NO2, nitrogen oxides (NOX), nitrogen monoxide (NO), total hydrocarbons (THC), and nonmethane hydrocarbons (NMHQ—at an open area surrounding this fixed-site monitoring station. This statistical method identifies the Gu-Ting station is well representative of outdoor concentrations of all nine air pollutants for a period of three weeks at the areas within a 700 m radius around this station. The indoor NO2 concentrations, however, are not represented by the measurements at the fixed-site monitoring station.  相似文献

Carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons were sampled at operator’s nose height inside vehicles moving in moderate to heavy traffic in six cities. The samples were integrated over 20-30 minutes by collection in Mylar bags. Carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons were analyzed by infrared and flame ionization, respectively, with instruments at the Continuous Air Monitoring Program (CAMP) station in each city. Detector tubes for carbon monoxide were also used to determine 5-min concentrations at suspected high points in the field. Estimates of traffic density were made. Three types of traffic arteries were considered: (7) heavily traveled, wide expressways, (2) main city streets with moderately rapid vehicular traffic, and (3) center city streets with slow-moving traffic. Integrated half-hour CO concentrations obtained within the vehicles while in traffic were generally considerably higher than the concurrent concentrations measured at the CAMP sites. In-traffic CO values in all cities sampled exceeded 30 ppm in at least 10% of the integrated samples. The range of city averages was 21–39 ppm carbon monoxide and the range of individual integrated samples was 7–77 ppm of carbon monoxide.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Ambient air monitoring for organic acids in PM25 was conducted at several locations in California. During the study, it was found that oxalic acid (ethanedioc acid) was the most abundant organic acid found in the PM2 5 fraction. Samples from Azuza (in southern California), San Jose (in the San Francisco Bay area), and Fresno (in central California), a PM2.5 Super Site, were collected in 1999 and analyzed. The results for oxalic acid concentrations during this monitoring effort are presented.  相似文献

We initiated the PETER (pedestrian environmental traffic pollutant exposure research) project to investigate pedestrians' exposure to traffic related atmospheric pollutants, based on data obtained with the collaboration of selected categories of pedestrian urban workers. We investigated relations between roadside personal exposure levels of volatile aromatic hydrocarbons (including benzene) and particulate matter <10 microm (PM10) among traffic police (n = 126) and parking wardens (n = 50) working in downtown Bologna, Italy. Data were collected from workshifts throughout four 1-week periods in different seasons of 2000-2001. For benzene and PM10, comparisons were made with measurements by fixed monitoring stations, and influence of localized traffic intensity and meteorological parameters was examined. Roadside personal exposure to benzene correlated more strongly with other volatile aromatic hydrocarbons (toluene, xylenes and ethylbenzene) than with PM10. Benzene and PM10 personal exposure levels were higher than fixed monitoring station values (both p<0.0001). At multivariate analysis, benzene and PM10 data from fixed monitoring stations both correlated with meteorological variables, and were also influenced by localized traffic intensity. Plausibly because of the downtown canyon-like streets, weather conditions (during a period of drought) only marginally affected benzene personal exposure, and moderately affected PM10 personal exposure. These findings reinforce the concept that urban atmospheric pollution data from fixed air monitoring stations cannot automatically be taken as indications of roadside exposures.  相似文献

Emission factors for particulate matter and carbon monoxide have been measured for wood, anthracite coal, and bituminous coal burned in residential heaters operated at less than 15 kW (50,000 Btu/hr). In these studies the stove effluent is mixed with about four volumes of outside air and samples are collected about two minutes after mixing. The main purpose of using this sampling method is to simulate atmospheric conditions more closely. Particulate samples are collected on 20 × 25 cm filters after cyclone preseparation of particles larger than 4 μm. Carbon monoxide concentrations are measured with Draeger tubes.

Particulate emission factors for wood ranged from 1.6 to 6.4 g/kg (fuel) and were found to depend on the fuel load and the firing rate, as indicated by earlier studies. These values are substantially less than the values obtained previously for stoves operated under similar conditions. The average particulate emission factors for bituminous and anthracite coal are 10.4 and 0.50 g/kg, respectively. Carbon monoxide emission factors for wood, bituminous, and anthracite coal are 100,116, and 21 g/kg, respectively.  相似文献

The US. Department of Energy Gasoline/Diesel PM Split Study was conducted to assess the sources of uncertainties in using an organic compound-based chemical mass balance receptor model to quantify the relative contributions of emissions from gasoline (or spark ignition [SI]) and diesel (or compression ignition [CI]) engines to ambient concentrations of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) in California's South Coast Air Basin (SOCAB). In this study, several groups worked cooperatively on source and ambient sample collection and quality assurance aspects of the study but worked independently to perform chemical analysis and source apportionment. Ambient sampling included daily 24-hr PM2.5 samples at two air quality-monitoring stations, several regional urban locations, and along freeway routes and surface streets with varying proportions of automobile and truck traffic. Diesel exhaust was the dominant source of total carbon (TC) and elemental carbon (EC) at the Azusa and downtown Los Angeles, CA, monitoring sites, but samples from the central part of the air basin showed nearly equal apportionments of CI and SI. CI apportionments to TC were mainly dependent on EC, which was sensitive to the analytical method used. Weekday contributions of CI exhaust were higher for Interagency Monitoring of Protected Visual Environments (IMPROVE; 41+/-3.7%) than Speciation Trends Network (32+/-2.4%). EC had little effect on SI apportionment. SI apportionments were most sensitive to higher molecular weight polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (indeno[123-cd]pyrene, benzo(ghi)perylene, and coronene) and several steranes and hopanes, which were associated mainly with high emitters. Apportionments were also sensitive to choice of source profiles. CI contributions varied from 30% to 60% of TC when using individual source profiles rather than the composites used in the final apportionments. The apportionment of SI vehicles varied from 1% to 12% of TC depending on the specific profile that was used. Up to 70% of organic carbon (OC) in the ambient samples collected at the two fixed monitoring sites could not be apportioned to directly emitted PM emissions.  相似文献

It has recently been recognized that air and noise pollution constitutes an extended problem over the densely populated city of Buenos Aires. Traffic emissions are of paramount concern, especially along narrow and main traffic arteries. In spite of these considerations, few systematic studies have been undertaken to evaluate the air quality in the metropolitan area of the city. In 1996, concentrations of carbon monoxide (CO), nitric oxide (NO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and ozone (O3) were simultaneously measured for the first time using a continuous monitoring station. This station was placed in a building at Belgrano Avenue, which is a heavy traffic street in the downtown area of the city (Bogo et al., Atmospheric Environment 33 (1999) 2587. In this work, we analyze the dependence of the measured primary pollutants, CO and the mixture of nitrogen oxides (NOx), with meteorological conditions, traffic emissions and monitoring location. We compare the registered values with the results obtained from modeling the dispersion of the pollutants emitted from mobile and area sources. We also discuss the relevance of street canyon effects compared with background concentrations of these pollutants.  相似文献

This report gives a brief summary of the experimental plan and the early results of field observations from the California Aerosol Characterization Experiment (ACHEX). The objectives of the program center on questions of the sources and evolution of aerosols in urban air, as they are superimposed on a natural background, particularly as they relate to visibilitydegradation. The project initially nvolved the use of an elaborately instrumented mobile laboratory combined with a fixed station in San Jose, in Pasadena, and in Riverside, and later incorporated several satellite monitoring stations in the Los Angeles Basin. Intensive field observationswere taken from July 1972 to November 1972 in several urban and nonurban locations between the San Francisco Bay area and the South Coast Basin, covering the Los Angeles area. In a second phase of the ACHEX, aerosols accompanying photochemical smog were studied intensively in the Los Angeles Basin during the period between July and October of 1973. The observations cover a wide variety of parameters including physical and chemical properties of aerosols, pollutant gas concentrations, and meteorological variables. The initial results show the great importance of sulfate, nitrate, noncarbonate carbon, and liquid water to the mass concentration of airborne particles and their relation to reduction in visibility. The anthropogenic contribution to atmospheric aerosols is consistently found to be allocated primarily to the submicron or fine particle size range.  相似文献

A relatively simple Gaussian-type diffusion simulation model for calculating urban carbon monoxide (CO) concentrations as a function of local meteorology and the distribution of traffic is described. The model can be used in two ways: (1) in the synoptic mode, in which hourly concentrations at one or many receptor points are calculated from historical or forecast traffic and meteorological data; and (2) in the climatological mode, in which concentration frequency distributions are calculated on the basis of long-term sequences of input data. For model evaluation purposes, an extensive field study involving meteorological and air-quality measurements was conducted during November-December 1970 in San Jose, Calif., which has an automated network to provide traffic data throughout the central business district. Model refinements made on the basis of the data from this experimental program include the addition of a street-canyon submodel to compensate for the important aerodynamic effects of buildings on CO concentrations at streetside receptors. The magnitude of these effects was underscored by the concentrations measured on opposite sides of the street in San Jose, which frequently differed by a factor of two or more. Evaluation of the revised model has shown that calculated and observed concentration frequency distributions for street-canyon sites are in good agreement. Hour-average predictions are well correlated with observations (correlation coefficient of about 0.6 to 0.7), and about 80 percent of the calculated values are within 3 ppm of the observed hour-average concentrations, which ranged as high as 16 ppm.  相似文献

Abstract

One-week integrated fine particulate matter (i.e., particles <2.5 μm in diameter; PM2.5) samples were collected continuously with a low-flow rate sampler at a downtown site (Chegongzhuang) and a residential site (Tsinghua University) in Beijing between July 1999 and June 2000. The annual average concentrations of organic carbon (OC) and elemental carbon (EC) at the urban site were 23.9 and 8.8 μg m?3, much higher than those in some cities with serious air pollution. Similar weekly variations of OC and EC concentrations were found for the two sampling sites with higher concentrations in the winter and autumn. The highest weekly variations of OC and EC occurred in the winter, suggesting that combustion sources for space heating were important contributors to carbonaceous particles, along with a significant impact from variable meteorological conditions. High emissions coupled with unfavorable meteorological conditions led to the max weekly carbonaceous concentration the week of November 18–25, 1999. The weekly mass ratios of OC:EC ranged between 2 and 4 for most samples and averaged 2.9, probably suggesting that secondary OC (SOC) is present most weeks. The range of contemporary carbon fraction, based on the C14 analyses of eight samples collected in 2001, is 0.330–0.479. Estimated SOC accounted for ~38% of the total OC at the two sites. Average OC and EC concentrations at Tsinghua University were 25% and 18%, respectively, higher than those at Chegongzhuang, which could be attributed to different local emissions of primary carbonaceous particles and gaseous precursors of SOC, as well as different summer photochemical intensities between the two locations.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to gather air quality data for four pollutants inside and outside of three pairs of structures for different seasons of the year. This paper presents results obtained during the summer, fall, and winter seasons of 1969–70. Suspended particulate, soiling particulate, carbon monoxide, and sulfur dioxide were measured at pairs of public buildings, office buildings, and private homes. A brief preliminary program was conducted during the winter of 1969 to verify our procedures and equipment and to assess the effects of heating and cooking systems in private homes on indoor levels of air pollutants. Two self-contained and portable instrument packages were constructed for the measurement program. The major components of each trailer package were a central vacuum pump for drawing air samples through particulate collection niters, four paper-tape soiling samplers, a conductimetric analyzer for sulfur dioxide, an infrared analyzer for carbon monoxide, a master control unit, and supporting apparatus to make the trailer self-contained. Each pair of buildings was sampled simultaneously for a two-week period. Four sampling points were selected at each structure, two outside and two inside. Suspended particulate samples were collected for 12-hr day and night periods, soiling particulate samples for 2-hr periods, and gaseous samples for 5-min periods. The results show the ease of penetration of particulate into private homes and the removal ability of air conditioning systems. Outdoor daily activity greatly influences particulate levels and urban carbon monoxide levels. Internal generation of pollutants was a significant factor in measured interior concentrations in some of the structures sampled.  相似文献

Covid-19 lockdowns have improved the ambient air quality across the world via reduced air pollutant levels. This article aims to investigate the effect of the partial lockdown on the main ambient air pollutants and their elemental concentrations bound to PM2.5 in Hanoi. In addition to the PM2.5 samples collected at three urban sites in Hanoi, the daily PM2.5, NO2, O3, and SO2 levels were collected from the automatic ambient air quality monitoring station at Nguyen Van Cu street to analyze the pollution level before (March 10th–March 31st) and during the partial lockdown (April 1st–April 22nd) with “current” data obtained in 2020 and “historical” data obtained in 2014, 2016, and 2017. The results showed that NO2, PM2.5, O3, and SO2 concentrations obtained from the automatic ambient air quality monitoring station were reduced by 75.8, 55.9, 21.4, and 60.7%, respectively, compared with historical data. Besides, the concentration of PM2.5 at sampling sites declined by 41.8% during the partial lockdown. Furthermore, there was a drastic negative relationship between the boundary layer height (BLH) and the daily mean PM2.5 in Hanoi. The concentrations of Cd, Se, As, Sr, Ba, Cu, Mn, Pb, K, Zn, Ca, Al, and Mg during the partial lockdown were lower than those before the partial lockdown. The results of enrichment factor (EF) values and principal component analysis (PCA) concluded that trace elements in PM2.5 before the partial lockdown were more affected by industrial activities than those during the partial lockdown.

A method employing the timed fill of Mylar bags was used to obtain average carbon monoxide concentration values for ten locations in the Fairbanks, Alaska, area. The method is shown to be accurate, reliable, and inexpensive. The correlation coefficient between the bag sampling method and a continuous carbon monoxide analyzer was 0.945; correlation of carbon monoxide data from several locations to a reference in downtown Fairbanks showed a general decrease with distance from the reference analyzer. Analysis of data from Fairbanks shows that carbon monoxide concentrations during the winter months may have to be reduced 50-75% to achieve the State and National Ambient Air Quality Standards; the high levels of carbon monoxide are the result of emissions from automobile traffic during periods of severe inversion in the Fairbanks basin.  相似文献

From 1994 to 2003, daily air concentrations of particle-bound polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and carbon monoxide (CO) were regularly monitored at two traffic-oriented sampling sites (A and B) in urban Genoa, Italy. The data were used to estimate effects on air quality in real situations due to progressive substitution of EURO-0 vehicles, started in 1993, with less-polluting vehicles (EURO-1, EURO-2), mainly gasoline vehicles with a catalyst. PAH profile classification and diagnostic PAH ratios were used to identify 345 samples of predominantly traffic origin. At both sites, CO and PAH daily concentrations decreased exponentially with time and the apparent half-life values calculated were 6.3 and 5.5 for CO and 3.7 and 3.5 years for PAHs at sites A and B, respectively. At site A, monitored for traffic intensity, multiple regression analyses confirmed that daily PAH and CO concentrations were positively correlated with the number of non-catalytic vehicles estimated to cross this site during sampling and negatively correlated with seasonal variables (air temperature, ozone concentration, relative air humidity). The reduction in air pollution estimated for complete substitution of non-catalytic gasoline vehicles was 89% for BaP, 85% for total PAHs and 69% for CO.  相似文献

Elemental carbon (EC) particles have been found in the lungs of dolphins. The question arose as to whether these particles originated over land or water. This project determined the amount of EC particulate found in terrestrial air. Portions of paniculate filters and associated data collected during the period from January 1990 through December 1991 were provided by the Florida Department of Environmental Regulation. Using reflectance spectroscopy and laboratory-generated standards, atmospheric concentrations of EC and TSP were determined. This paper addresses the data from those counties which surround Tampa Bay.

In the spring of 1992, a television news station reported that researchers at Mote Marine Institute had found black carbon particulates in the lungs of dolphins (reported as “...dolphins with Black Lung Disease..."). The dolphins were found in the Gulf of Mexico off the coast of Florida.1 In discussions with a principal investigator of the dolphin study, the question arose as to whether these particulates came from urban or marine sources. No comprehensive investigation of soot concentrations in the air over Florida had been made. This study reports the elemental carbon (EC) content of urban particulate matter in the Tampa Bay region, where the affected dolphins were discovered between 1988 and 1990 (Sarasota County). This is the first step toward answering whether urban concentrations of EC were sufficient to contribute measurably to the EC found in the marine environment. Future efforts will address marine concentrations and sources of EC.

Elemental carbon, commonly termed “soot,” is a product of incomplete combustion. Common urban sources of EC in particulate matter include both mobile sources (diesel-powered buses, cars, and trucks) and point sources (incinerators, power plants and home heating units). The State of Florida operates environmental monitoring stations in selected municipalities around the state. At these stations, which were sited according to EPA requirements2, Total Suspended Particulate (TSP) samples were collected using the accepted methods.3 These samples were suitable for EC analysis. Samples collected in the Tampa Bay region in 199b and 1991 were analyzed for EC content using reflectance spectroscopy. EC concentrations were calculated in micrograms per cubic meter (μg/m3).  相似文献
