Growth and production of the shallow-water ophiuroids Ophiura albida and O. ophiura were investigated at two stations in the German Bight from 1988 to 1991. Growth rings visible on the vertebral ossicles of the ophiuroid arms were interpreted as annual age markers. A correction for overgrown first rings allows for more exact estimations of growth and age. In both species growth could be described by Von Bertalanffy growth functions with the asymptotic disc diameter D =10.1 mm, K=0.229 and t o=-0.192 in O. albida and D =27.7 mm, K=0.084 and t o=0.042 in O. ophiura. Somatic production was calculated from mass specific growth rates. Annual production:biomass (P:B) ratios were estimated at 0.32 for O. albida and 0.43 for O. ophiura.AWI Publication Number: 618  相似文献

The brittle stars Amphiura filiformis (Müller) and Ophiura albida (Forbes) were exposed to different oxygen saturations (100, 10, 5, 3, and <1% oxygen saturation) and to physiological anoxia (<1% oxygen saturation) at different total sulfide concentrations (0, 2, 20, 200 μM). The mortality was followed during experiments and the median survival time (LT50) was determined. The infaunal A. filiformis had a significantly higher tolerance to both hypoxia and sulfide than did the epibenthic O. albida. After exposure to 10% oxygen saturation for a month, only 2.0% A. filiformis and 0% O. albida were dead. In oxygen saturations <1% A. filiformis and O. albida had a LT50 of 7.5 and 2.5 d, respectively. The presence of even very small concentrations of sulfide decreased the survival significantly. Sulfide is shown to be the key factor for the survival of the two species. Received: 11 October 1996 / Accepted: 12 November 1996  相似文献

Patterns of reproductive effort were examined both within and between 4 species of the tropical marine gastropod genus Conus from Hawaii in 1979. Caloric content was measured for the somatic tissues of female cone shells and for their egg capsule masses. These data were used to calculate (1) current reproductive effort, which was the ratio of annual energy produced as spawn to the sum of the annual energy produced as spawn plus the annual energy produced as somatic tissue; and (2) weight-specific reproductive effort, which was the ratio of annual energy produced as spawn to the total energy content of the female body just before spawning. For C. pennaceus, during the approximately 10 yr of life of a female, current reproductive effort rose from about 0.35 at 2 yr to about 0.85 at 10 yr. In contrast, weight-specific reproductive effort remained relatively constant throughout life for C. pennaceus (about 0.2 to 0.5), C. abbreviatus (about 0.2 to 0.3), C. flavidus (about 0.2 to 0.3) and C. quercinus (about 0.1 to 0.2). It is suggested that weight-specific reproductive effort may be useful as an index of the selective importance of the survival cost of present reproduction, while current reproductive effort more closely reflects the selective importance of energy allocation tradeoffs. Data on the 4 species of Conus examined support the hypothesis that reproductive effort should be positively correlated with extrinsic adult mortality and negatively correlated with the variability of juvenile survivorship. The data also suggest a possible relationship between reproductive effort and the cost of parental care.  相似文献

Subtidal benthic communities on hard substrata are usually characterised by intense competition for space; neighbouring organisms are generally viewed as a threat to the maintenance of this limited resource. Here, I describe an association between two species of subtidal ascidians where the abundance of one appears to be wholly determined by the abundance of the other.Pyura spinifera is a large subtidal stalked ascidian that is common in south-eastern Australia and usually occurs in clumps. At the base of these clumps the unstalked ascidianCnemidocarpa pedata is often present. Between February and May 1992, I used a removal experiment to test the prediction that the recruitment ofP. spinifera was dependent on the presence ofC. pedata. There were three treatments at two sites: (i)C. pedata were totally removed, (ii)C. pedata densities were reduced by half, and (iii) ascidians were left untouched (control). The removal ofC. pedata significantly reducedP. spinifera recruitment relative to controls; recruitment ofP. spinifera was only observed onC. pedata. Results were consistent between sites. Furthermore, laboratory settlement trials indicated thatP. spinifera settle preferentially in response to cues with which recruits are normally associated, while settlement is poor or does not occur in the absence of such cues. Laboratory trials also indicate that these responses are mediated by water-borne compounds.  相似文献

The intertidal limpet Siphonaria kurracheensis (Reeve, 1856) has a bimodal vertical distribution of abundance on rocky shores at Rottnest Island, Western Australia. An electrophoretic study of 5 polymorphic enzymes revealed no consistent genetic differences between adults high and low on the shore. Contrasting with this absence of a detectable genetic response to the steep environmental gradients in the intertidal zone, there were genetic differences among low-shore adults from different sites, and between adults and recruits. This genetic differentiation could be due to either localized selection or temporal variation in the genetic makeup of recruits.Communicated by G. F. Humphrey, Sydney  相似文献

The gut contents of three intertidal patellid limpets were analysed by collecting foraging specimens on a breakwater on the Tyrrhenian coast (central Italy) between May 1988 and October 1989. The three species coexist there showing a different, but partially overlapping zonation: Patella aspera dominates the infralittoral fringe; the majority of P. caerulea inhabits the lower midlittoral, while P. rustica is most abundant in the upper midlittoral. The algae present on slivers of substratum over which each limpet collected was moving were identified. Moreover, floristic surveys were made along the shore in order to characterize the algal cover of the different zonal belts. The floristic study revealed that the basic elements of algal communities typical of western Mediterranean rocky shores are present in the study area. The algae found on the slivers under the foraging limpets were generally representative of the algal community typical of the same zone. There was a marked difference between the diets of P. rustica and P. aspera due to the fact that the first species forages on a few low lying epilithic and endolithic Cyanophyceae, while P. aspera feeds on a large number of species belonging to all the main algal classes and life forms considered, including frondose epilithics and epiphytics. The diet of P. caerulea resembles that of P. aspera in algal heterogeneity, but is dominated by Cyanophyceae as in P. rustica. A detailed analysis of the differences between gut contents of each limpet species and the relative slivers showed an obvious general correspondence, but revealed also that the diets of the three species do not completely reflect the availability of algae. These findings suggest that the basic diet segregation mechanism between the three populations is their zonal separation. However, the difference in gut contents of heterospecific limpets foraging in the same zone suggests the existence of supplementary morphy-functional or behavioural mechanisms for diet segregation between the three species.  相似文献

In Hong Kong, low-shore rock pools support a patchy mosaic of different successional stages of crustose coralline algae. Echinoid and molluscan grazers are abundant in these low-shore rock pools and spatial and temporal variation in grazing pressure is thought to play an important role in structuring these assemblages. Direct records of graze marks using a modified wax-disc method were used to monitor spatial (different pools) and temporal (periods, 3 or 4 days each; spring vs. neap tides; summer vs. winter) variations in grazing pressure. Radula marks of Chlorostoma argyrostoma, Lunella coronata and Nerita albicilla were common in all pools. Grazing pressure was highly variable with tidal state and season but also within these two factors. Lunella and Nerita exerted highest grazing pressure at neap tides during summer, whilst Chlorostoma exerted highest grazing pressure in winter. Although overall patterns of temporal variation were similar and consistent in all pools, there was between pool variation in grazing pressure and individual species showed different patterns. Within the seasonal and tidal variations, large period-to-period differences were found for all species, illustrating small-scale temporal variation. Fine-scale spatial and temporal patterns of variation in grazing pressure of different species, therefore, contribute to the highly dynamic nature of these low-shore rock pools.  相似文献

For small tube-building amphipods that live on the algae they consume, food and habitat are tightly linked. This study compared two closely related amphipods to determine whether the species’ algal preferences are based on the food value of the algae or on some other aspect of their algal habitat. Ampithoe lacertosa and Peramphithoe humeralis are both abundant on Shannon Point beach (Anacortes, Washington, USA; 48°30.542′ N, 122°41.070′ W) but specialize on different algae. In observations and laboratory experiments conducted July–September 1997, 2007, and 2008, the two species exhibited markedly different choices of food and habitat when offered six common macroalgae. Ampithoe lacertosa ate all algae offered, but preferentially built tubes on the green alga Ulva lactuca. Survival was relatively low among juveniles maintained on single species diets, except when they were fed Mazzaella splendens. Conversely, P. humeralis consumed primarily the brown kelp Saccharina latissima, Alaria marginata, and Desmarestia ligulata and preferred those species for tube building. Juvenile P. humeralis could not survive on a diet of U. lactuca or M. splendens. While A. lacertosa builds simple, temporary tubes and relocates frequently, P. humeralis is a highly thigmotactic species that builds long-term, complex tubes on the alga it prefers to eat. Feeding and habitat preferences of the two species were not clearly linked to nitrogen content of the algae, C:N ratio, or toughness of the algal tissue. Instead, preferences of the species may be related to their mobility and the permanence of the tubes they build. Ampithoe lacertosa and P. humeralis also use different feeding strategies; the former appears to mix algae to produce a high-quality diet, while the latter is more selective and has a capacity for compensatory feeding. The species are abundant on the same protected rocky shores, but specialize on different algae for habitat and food. Results suggest that the nutritional requirements of these sympatric mesograzers differ considerably and even closely related species can exhibit divergent behavioral strategies.  相似文献

The influence of microbial films on larval settlement was studied for sympatric species of cellularioid cheilostome bryozoans (Bugula simplex, B. stolonifera, and B. turrita). Settlement experiments were conducted in the laboratory in 1981 with and without a choice of filmed or unfilmed substrates. When given a choice of substrates, the larvae of all three bryozoan species significantly preferred the filmed substrate. When not given a choice of substrates, both B. simplex and B. turrita larvae tended not to settle on the unfilmed substrate, while the filmed and unfilmed substrates were equally attractive to B. stolonifera. Microbial films enhanced the settlement of all three species.  相似文献

The green macroalga, Codium fragile ssp. tomentosoides, is an important component of sheltered low-shore assemblages on breakwaters along sandy shores in the northern Adriatic Sea. Macroscopic thalli of C. fragile are not perennial, but develop from propagules and/or undifferentiated forms in early spring, when the dominant native space-occupier, the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis, recruits. By mid-summer, rapid growth of C. fragile leads to the formation of a dense canopy. We investigated the effects of juvenile and adult thalli of C. fragile on recruitment, survival and growth of mussels. Two experiments tested the hypotheses: (1) that recruitment of mussels is greater within patches of juvenile thalli (primordia) of C. fragile than on adjacent bare surfaces; (2) that the presence of a canopy of C. fragile affects the survival and growth of mussel recruits. The number of recruits of mussels was significantly larger within clumps of primordia of C. fragile than on bare surfaces. The removal of the canopy of C. fragile affected negatively the density of mussels after 2 months from the start of the experiment, but there were no effects on the mean size of individuals, nor on the size–frequency distribution. The same trend persisted after 4 months from the start of the experiment. These results show that re-colonisation of space by mussels is enhanced by C. fragile. Given that mussels, in turn, have the potential to reduce recruitment rates of C. fragile, quick recovery of mussel beds after disturbances could be crucial for controlling the abundance of this alga on breakwaters. Results also suggest that the effects of introduced species on native assemblages can be explained only through studies encompassing different life-stages of interacting organisms.  相似文献

Chaotic genetic patchiness in an intertidal limpet,Siphonaria sp.   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Variation of 4 polymorphic enzymes was studied for 2 yr (1978 and 1979) in an undescribed species of Siphonaria, a pulmonate limpet, from a rocky shore at Rottnest Island, Western Australia. Depending on the locus, significant genetic differences were found among sites along 50 m of shore, between high and low portions of the shore within sites, between adults and recruits, and between recruits in the 2 yr. This genetic heterogeneity does not follow a simple, consistent pattern, but forms a shifting, ephemeral genetic patchiness best described as chaotic. This patchiness may result from temporal variation of numbers and genotypes of recruits, which leads to the proposal that planktonic dispersal, although causing uniformity on a large scale, can give rise to fine-scale genetic patchiness.  相似文献

The invasive mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis and the indigenous mussel Perna perna coexist intertidally on the south coast of South Africa through partial vertical habitat segregation: M. galloprovincialis dominates the upper shore and P. perna the lower shore. Recruitment patterns can explain the zonation of P. perna, but not the invasive species. We examined the role of post-recruitment interactions by measuring spatial and temporal differences in adult growth and mortality rates of the two species. Specifically, we tested the hypothesis that interspecific differences in growth and mortality reflect adult distribution patterns. The two study locations, Plettenberg Bay and Tsitsikamma, are 70 km apart with two sites (separated by 300–400 m) per location, each divided into three vertical zones. Growth was measured seasonally using different marking methods in 2001 and 2003. Cumulative adult mortality was measured through summer in 2003/2004. Both species generally grew more slowly upshore, but they showed different effects of season. For P. perna, growth was significantly reduced in winter in the low zone, but unaffected by season in the high zone. For M. galloprovincialis, growth was either unaffected by season or increased in winter, even in the high zone. Thus, growth of P. perna and M. galloprovincialis was reduced under cool winter and warm summer temperatures, respectively; and while growth was more similar between species in summer, M. galloprovincialis grew much faster than P. perna in winter. Mortality of P. perna increased upshore. For M. galloprovincialis, mortality was not zone-dependent and was significantly greater than for P. perna on the low-shore and (generally) across the shore in Tsitsikamma. Both species had higher growth and mortality rates in Plettenberg Bay than in Tsitsikamma. Thus, P. perna seems able to maintain spatial dominance on the low-shore and at certain sites because of higher mortality of M. galloprovincialis. We conclude that seasonality in growth of the two species reflects their biogeographic affinities and that coexistence is possible through pre-recruitment effects that limit the vertical distribution of P. perna and post-recruitment effects that limit M. galloprovincialis.  相似文献

While the benthic infauna of the North Sea has been studied intensively over the past decades, few studies have focused on the larger mobile epifauna. Studies carried out to date have described the distribution of epifaunal communities over the whole of the North Sea, but variability within the identified communities, which occurs on a much smaller scale, has so far remained unstudied. This is the first study to describe seasonal and annual variability of an epifaunal assemblage in the German Bight area, where environmental conditions are highly variable. The benthic community was sampled with a 2 m beam trawl from 1998 to 2001. The echinoderms Ophiura albida and Asterias rubens and the crustacean Pagurus bernhardus were the dominant species caught throughout the study period. Overall the species composition of the catches was relatively consistent, while abundances of dominant species fluctuated considerably between sampling periods. Differences between sampling periods were not only influenced by the abundances of dominant species, but also by less dominant species such as Ophiura ophiura, Astropecten irregularis, Corystes cassivelaunus, Crangon crangon and Aphorrahis pespelicani. The abundances of these species varied annually and seasonally in the assemblage. Clear differences between summer and winter in the species composition, abundance and biomass were identified. Annual and seasonal changes were most likely linked to migratory movements of epifauna into and out of the area under investigation. Temporal changes in species composition and abundance correlated best with water temperatures, while the spatial distribution of the total biomass over the whole sampling period was correlated with sediment characteristics. Anthropogenic influences such as fishing activity and chronic large-scale eutrophication are thought to have influenced the community on a long-term basis, but have been considered unlikely causes for the short-term variability described by this study.Communicated by J.P. The mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis is highly invasive worldwide, but displays varying degrees of local and regional coexistence with indigenous mussels through spatial habitat segregation. We investigated the roles of settlement, post-settlement mortality, juvenile growth and recruitment in partial habitat segregation between the invasive M. galloprovincialis and the indigenous mussel Perna perna on the south coast of South Africa. We used two study locations, Plettenberg Bay and Tsitsikamma, 70 km apart, with two sites (separated by 300–400 m) per location, each divided into three vertical zones. There were no significant effects in Tsitsikamma, where daily settlement and monthly recruitment were significantly lower than in Plettenberg Bay. In Plettenberg Bay, settlement (primary and secondary) and recruitment of both species decreased upshore. Post-settlement mortality was measured over two consecutive 6-day periods during a spring tide and a neap tide. For both species mortality was low on the low-shore. High-shore mortality was consistently low for M. galloprovincialis, but increased dramatically for P. perna during spring tide. No data were obtained for growth of P. perna, but juvenile M. galloprovincialis grew more slowly farther upshore. P. perna recruited mainly in spring and summer, with a peak in summer far greater than for M. galloprovincialis. Recruitment of M. galloprovincialis was more protracted, continuing through autumn and winter. Thus local coexistence is due to a combination of pre- and post-recruitment factors differing in importance for each species. P. perna is excluded from the high-shore by recruitment failure (low settlement, high mortality). High survival and slow growth in juveniles may allow large densities of M. galloprovincialis to accumulate there, despite low settlement rates. With no differences between species in settlement or mortality on the low-shore, exclusion of M. galloprovincialis from that zone is likely to be by post-recruitment processes, possibly strengthened by periodic heavy recruitments of P. perna. At larger scales, larval retention and protracted recruitment contribute to the success of M. galloprovincialis at Plettenberg Bay, while recruitment limitation may explain why M. galloprovincialis is less successful at other sites.  相似文献

Two herbivorous species of the temperate labroid fish family Odacidae were examined for the presence of gut endosymbionts.Odax cyanomelas (Richardson) from southern Australia andO. pullus Schneider from New Zealand both feed on macroalgae, yet appear to lack obvious morphological specializations for herbivory. Specimens ofO. cyanomelas andO. pullus were collected in 1989 from Sydney, Australia, and Leigh, New Zealand, respectively. Both species were found to harbour dense concentrations of prokaryotic and eukaryotic microbes in their lower intestines. The various cell types present were examined by light microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Epifluorescence microscope counts were used to quantify the distribution and abundance of the microbiota along the gut ofO. cyanomelas. Major differences were observed in the composition of microbiota between the two species.O. cyanomelas contained spirilla, large rod-shaped bacteria, filamentous bacteria and two forms of trichomonad flagellates.O. pullus also harboured dense, large, rod-shaped bacterial populations, but lacked the other two large prokaryote categories found inO. cyanomelas, and contained diplomonad flagellates. The large rod-shaped bacteria found in both species resembled prokaryotes described from other herbivorous fish and termites.  相似文献

Epifaunal crustaceans on turtlegrass (Thalassia testudinum) and five dominant macroalgae (Anadyomene stellata, Digenia simplex, Halimeda incrassata, Laurencia poitei and Penicillus lamourouxii) were quantitatively sampled bimonthly over a one-year period from September 1979 to September 1980 in a subtropical seagrass meadow in Apalachee Bay, Florida (northeastern Gulf of Mexico). These plant species exhibited a wide range of morphologies, with surface area-to-biomass ratios differing by over 2.5 times. A similar suite of crustaceans occurred on all macrophytes despite differences in shape or architecture among plant species. Relative abundances of many crustaceans, however, varied among plant hosts. Similarity analysis indicated that the epifaunal associates of T. testudinum were distinct from those of the macroalgae. Species richness was generally higher on turtlegrass than on any of the macroalgae. Abundances of total crustaceans per plant biomass or per plant surface area, on the other hand, were greater on all macroalgal species compared to the seagrass. Abundances (per plant biomass or plant surface area) of 14 of the 16 numerically dominant epifaunal species differed significantly among macrophytes. Twelve of the 16 species had greater abundance on one or more macroalgae, while only two species were more abundant on T. testudinum. Almost half of the dominant species had greatest abundances on the branching red alga L. poitei. Although abundances per plant biomass and plant surface area were greater on macroalgae relative to turtlegrass, densities (individuals per meter square of bottom) of animals associated with T. testudinum were significantly greater than those associated with macroalgae, primarily because of the greater abundance of turtlegrass in the grass bed. Both surface area-to-biomass ratios and degree of branching were poorly correlated with epifaunal abundance and number of species. Neither structural feature is an adequate predictor of faunal abundance and species richness among plant species, especially when macrophytes with very different morphologies are compared.  相似文献

Habitat associations are an integral part of coral reef community structure. Commonly, one organism lives in such close association within or near another that a spatial refuge occurs, whereby one of the organisms provides protection to the other. This is often the result of defenses of the host deterring an associate organism’s consumers. In Moorea, French Polynesia, the range and abundance of the brown macroalga, Turbinaria ornata, have increased drastically since 1980 such that dense aggregations of this macroalga are a dominant component of the backreef habitat. Turbinaria ornata is both mechanically and chemically defended from herbivores. Other species of macroalgae grow within aggregations of Turbinaria and may benefit from these defenses. This study investigates whether aggregations of Turbinaria create a refuge from herbivory for associate macroalgae. When Turbinaria aggregations were removed experimentally, there was a significant increase in the number of associate algal species. Moreover, an herbivory assay using the palatable local alga Acanthophora spicifera identified herbivory as the mechanism for lower diversity on bommies lacking Turbinaria aggregations. The local increase in algal richness due to the refuge from herbivory afforded by Turbinaria may be an important contribution to macroalgal and community dynamics on reefs in Moorea, French Polynesia.  相似文献

Genomic relationships between North Atlantic, Australian and Japanese isolates of the benthic seaweed Cladophora albida (Huds.) Kütz. were examined in 1987 by means of DNA-DNA hybridization. The data indicate that C. albida can be divided into a North Atlantic and an Indo-West Pacific group with an intergroup hybridization response of 25 to 30% and 5.5° to 6.0°C for hybridization percentage and T me the melting temperature reduction of hybridized sequences, respectively. This level of genome divergence is considerably higher than that observed in most other eukaryotes. The separation between the two C. albida groups presumably dates back to the closure of the Asian part of the Tethys Ocean, about 12 million years ago. The data also indicate that transatlantic C. albida populations have a greater genetic inter-relatedness than have Japanese and Australian populations. In C. albida there is no clear correlation between molecular evolution and the evolution of morphological traits. C. albida and C. rupestris (L.) Kütz have hardly any DNA sequences in common.  相似文献

The genomic structure of two morphological forms of the pyurid ascidian Herdmania momus — H. momus forma curvata and H. momus forma grandis—are compared using a rapidly evolving highly repetitive element isolated from the genome of H. momus forma curvata. A 663 bp (base pair) Cla I satellite sequence is present only in the genome of H. momus forma curvata, and hence can be used as a form-specific marker. Low-stringency Southern blot analyses, using the Cla I satellite as a probe, revealed that the genomes of H. momus forma grandis and another pyurid ascidian, Pyura stolonifera, do not contain similar sequences to the H. momus forma curvata repetitive element. In addition to this genomic dissimilarity, there are a number of significant reproductive and developmental differences between the two H. momus forms, and interform fertilisation rates are significantly lower than intraform rates. The molecular, reproductive and developmental differences between H. momus forma curvata and H. momus forma grandis indicate the presence of strong barriers to gene flow.  相似文献

The present study was designed to measure the relative turnover of nitrogen and phosphorus during a standard period of metabolism among several co-occurring species of benthic invertebrates: chitons (Poneroplax albida Blainville 1825); albalones (Haliotis roei Gray, 1826); gastropods [Turbo (ninella) torquatus Gmelin, 1791]; ascidians [Herdmania momus (Savigny)]; and sponges (Aplysina sp. and Iotrochata baculifera Ridley, 1884). Five of the six species (collected at Wreck Rock, Western Australia in 1985) exhibited a high turnover of phosphorus (P) relative to nitrogen (N). In contrast to N, P turnover was related to the concentration of P in body tissues. A relatively high demand for P in the diet is required to support the observed rapid turnover of P with respect to N. This observation suggests that the evaluation of potential foods would be better accomplished by the measurement of the C:P or the N:P ratio, rather than the commonly used C:N ratio.  相似文献
