Spatial and temporal variation in recruitment of the compound ascidian Aplidium stellatum was examined on a shallow-water limestone outcropping in the Northeastern Gulf of Mexico from 1983 to 1985. Fifty-two percent of the recruits appeared on vertical surfaces, which were rare at this site. In the laboratory, tadpole larvae of A. stellatum consistently settled on vertical vs horizontal surfaces in a 2 to 1 ratio, regardless of the area of vertical surface offered. This settlement response was insufficient to account entirely for the field recruitment pattern, suggesting greater mortality of newly-settled individuals or larvae on horizontal vs vertical surfaces. Fifty-six percent of the variation in recruitment over 21 months could be explained by variation in the percentage of zooids brooding larvae in adult colonies. Over 28 consecutive months, the percentage of zooids brooding larvae was positively correlated with egg counts of the previous month (r 2=0.75), which in turn were weakly correlated with monthly average water temperature (r 2=0.36). These results suggest that larval production contributed substantially to temporal variation in recruitment of A. stellatum. The short larval life of tadpoles of A. stellatum and the relative isolation of the population were probably responsible for the correlation between recruitment and larval production.  相似文献

The importance of larval dispersal in determining the distribution and abundance of benthic marine organisms is well recognized; however, the contribution of post-larval dispersal has not been measured. I compared the dispersal of swimming larvae with that of rafting colonies in a population of compound ascidians, Botrylloides sp., living attached to leaves of the eelgrass Zostera marina in Tomales Bay, California, USA in 1990–1992. Colonies rafting on broken eelgrass traveled over 200 times farther and had comparable recruitment success relative to swimming larvae. The recruitment of rafting colonies into new habitats was facilitated by the ability of thesecolonial animals to grow asexually onto surrounding substrata. Rafting colonies brooded larvae that were subsequently relased after the colony settled into a new habitat. These results suggest that colonization of new habitats can occur by post-larvae as well as larvae, and that long-range dispersal by species with short-lived larvae may occur by post-larval rafting.  相似文献

The rate at which larvae successfully recruit into communities of marine benthic invertebrates is partially dependent upon how well larvae avoid benthic predators and settle on appropriate substrata. Therefore, to be able to predict recruitment success, information is needed on how larvae search for settlement sites, whether larvae preferentially settle on certain substrata, and the extent to which there are adequate cues for larvae to find these substrata. This article describes how larvae of the colonial ascidian Diplosoma similis find settlement sites on a coral reef. Direct field observations of larval settlement were made on a fringing reef in Kaneohe Bay, Oahu, Hawaii, between September 1985 and April 1986. A comparison of the substrata that larvae contacted prior to settlement relative to the percentage cover of these substrata on the study reef suggests that larvae are using a non-contact mode of substratum identification to locate suitable settlement sites. This mode of substratum identification allowed 74% of larvae to evade predation by benthic organisms who would otherwise have eaten larvae if they had been contacted. Of those larvae that evaded predation, 88% subsequently settled on the same two substrata upon which most adults are found (dead coral or the green alga Dictyosphaeria cavernosa). This pattern of settlement was probably a result of active selection, since the two substrata cover only 14.4% of the reef's surface and currents had little effect on the direction in which larvae swam. An important contributing factor to the high success rate of larval settlement on suitable substrata was the lack of any temporal decay in substratum preference. It is concluded that for Diplosoma similis larval supply is a sufficient predictor of larval settlement rate. However, for marine invertebrates whose larvae are passively dispersed and exhibit a greater temporal decay in substratum preference, larval settlement should generally have a greater dependency on spatial variation in the abundance of benthic predators and suitable substrata.  相似文献

Non-indigenous ascidians are known to significantly alter the structure and composition of benthic communities and adversely affect shellfish aquaculture by fouling both the cultured species and the infrastructure. The ability of these species to persist in new locations and their current and potential distributions are dependent upon physiological tolerances to environmental factors and biotic resistance to competition and predation. Despite significant data on global invasion patterns, potential biotic resistance to non-indigenous ascidians is poorly understood. We identified potential predators of four non-indigenous ascidians (Styela clava, Botryllus schlosseri, Botrylloides violaceus, and Didemnum vexillum) in British Columbia (BC), Canada in order to: (1) assess the potential for biotic interference to limit the establishment and/or spread of these ascidian species in BC, and (2) identify candidate species to be used as ascidian biofouling control agents in shellfish aquaculture. Using a series of single- and multiple-choice laboratory experiments, potential benthic predators (including various species of molluscs, echinoderms, and arthropods) were offered non-indigenous ascidians as prey. The sea urchins Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis and Strongylocentrotus franciscanus, the sea stars Dermasterias imbricata and Evasterias troschelii, the nudibranch Hermissenda crassicornis, and the crabs Cancer productus and Carcinus maenas were found to consume one or more species of non-indigenous ascidians in single-choice experiments. However, when provided a choice, all predators chose their respective preferred food over ascidians. Thus, predation alone is unlikely to prevent large-scale establishment and spread of non-indigenous ascidians in BC, but it may have the potential to significantly reduce localized populations of ascidians. Green sea urchins, S. droebachiensis, were found to be efficient grazers of all four ascidian species, consuming 12.7 ± 5.14 cm2 (mean ± SD) of adult B. violaceus over a 3-day period, 15 ± 3.7 juvenile colonies of B. violaceus over a 2-day period, and 63 ± 28.8 juvenile colonies of B. schlosseri over a 2-day period. Using sea urchins as biological control organisms may significantly reduce ascidian fouling in shellfish aquaculture.  相似文献

In obligate symbioses between didemnid ascidians and prokaryotic algae (cyanobacteria), the larvae of the host ascidian usually possess Prochloron cells that are acquired from their mother colony. The process of vertical transmission of the photosymbionts has been histologically described in several species harboring Prochloron in the common cloacal cavity, where Prochloron cells are attached to the hairy surface of the tunic of the larvae during or just before larval spawning. Since the process has never been described in species harboring the photosymbionts in the tunic of the colony, here we describe the histological and ultrastructural process of vertical transmission in a photosymbiotic didemnid, Trididemnum miniatum. No photosymbionts were associated with gametes of the ascidian. Prochloron cells appeared in the epithelial pouch enclosing the embryo and were then incorporated in the tunic of embryos in late embryonic stages. Although Prochloron cells in the tunic of the colony were rarely associated with the host cells, some amoeboid-shaped tunic cells containing Prochloron cells were occasionally found around the epithelial pouch. Therefore, the host cell is thought to be a vehicle transporting the photosymbionts in the tunic of the colony to the tunic of the embryos. The photosymbiont cells were directly embedded in the tunic of the larval trunk. They were not contained in the host cells, as are those in the tunic of the colony. These observations revealed that the mechanism of vertical transmission in T. miniatum is very different from that in didemnids harboring Prochloron in the common cloacal cavity of the colonies, such as Trididemnum cyclops. The mechanisms of symbiont transmission are diverse even within the genus Trididemnum.  相似文献

Subtidal benthic communities on hard substrata are usually characterised by intense competition for space; neighbouring organisms are generally viewed as a threat to the maintenance of this limited resource. Here, I describe an association between two species of subtidal ascidians where the abundance of one appears to be wholly determined by the abundance of the other.Pyura spinifera is a large subtidal stalked ascidian that is common in south-eastern Australia and usually occurs in clumps. At the base of these clumps the unstalked ascidianCnemidocarpa pedata is often present. Between February and May 1992, I used a removal experiment to test the prediction that the recruitment ofP. spinifera was dependent on the presence ofC. pedata. There were three treatments at two sites: (i)C. pedata were totally removed, (ii)C. pedata densities were reduced by half, and (iii) ascidians were left untouched (control). The removal ofC. pedata significantly reducedP. spinifera recruitment relative to controls; recruitment ofP. spinifera was only observed onC. pedata. Results were consistent between sites. Furthermore, laboratory settlement trials indicated thatP. spinifera settle preferentially in response to cues with which recruits are normally associated, while settlement is poor or does not occur in the absence of such cues. Laboratory trials also indicate that these responses are mediated by water-borne compounds.  相似文献

Populations of over 100 colonies of Capnella gaboensis Verseveldt, 1977 at each of four study sites in Sydney Harbour were monitored for recruitment, survival, and mortality from October 1982 to November 1984. Larval settlement and survival were observed in the laboratory. Successful in situ larval settlement of C. gaboensis was estimated to be in the order of 0.26%. The predominant mode of recruitment was from larvae. Asexual recruitment resulted only from the fission of large colonies, and not by fragmentation or by stolon development. Mortality of newly settled C. gaboensis in situ during their first year was estimated to be around 99.75%. For colonies more than 1 yr old, mortality was highest amongst juveniles. After colonies reach about 3 yr of age, they have a high expectation of further life, until they reach about 15 yr of age; life expectancy declines each year thereafter. These estimates of life expectancy are based upon the conservative assumption that the largest colonies are about 20 yr old. The likely causes of mortality for colonies in the field are: predation by urchins, ovulids and nudibranchs; abrasion by kelp; and overgrowth by algae and sponges. The causes of mortality for larvae and recruits in the field, however, can be predicted only on the basis of laboratory studies and observations of field conditions.  相似文献

Dispersion, distribution, development and feeding incidence of larvae of the naked goby,Gobiosoma bosci (Lacepéde), were examined for linkages between larval behavior while near the reef surface and later patterns of settlement and recruitment. Field sampling and experiments were conducted during the summers of 1988 and 1989 in the Flag Pond oyster reef along the western shore of the Chesapeake Bay near Camp Conoy, Maryland, USA. Results indicated that prior to settlement most demersal larvae aggregate in shoals and exhibit distinct microhabitat preferences on the reef. In a field experiment, larvae settled both during the day and at night. Dispersion at settlement was aggregated, suggesting that demersal shoaling influences settlement patterns in this species. The distribution of demersal larvae also indicated that larval swimming behavior is sufficiently strong to permit active control of position on reefs. Large demersal larvae settled rapidly when brought to the laboratory, but small larvae in demersal shoals appeared to require additional growth and morphological development prior to settlement. Development of the pelvic fins, used by juveniles and adults for perching on the substrate, may be a good indicator of competence to settle in this species. The adaptive significance of demersal shoaling by small larvae of the naked goby, and the fate of these larvae, remains perplexing because the low feeding rates found for larvae shoaling near the reef surface should slow or prevent the growth and development required prior to settlement. Observations made by other authors indicate that demersal shoaling and the use of water directly overlying reefs may be common behaviors of temperate and tropical reef fishes.  相似文献

We manipulated live sponges in Belize, Central America, Big Pine Key, Florida (USA), and Indian River lagoon, Florida (USA) in summer/autumn, 1988. At each location, live sponges of three species were placed within 0.5 cm of ceramic tiles. Tiles with synthetic sponges positioned in the same manner and tiles with no sponges served as controls. Of 26 recruiting species analyzed, only one (Sponge sp. 6 — Indian River) was inhibited by living sponges. Four species (Perophora regina — Belize;Aiptasia pallida — Big Pine Key; andCrassostrea virginica andAscidia nigra — Indian River) recruited in greater numbers in the presence of sponges, suggesting that some larvae may be attracted rather than repelled by sponge allelochemicals. Allelopathic effects were less important than small-scale flow effects and patchy larval supply in determining recruitment patterns on surfaces adjacent to sponges.  相似文献

Bioassays were conducted to test crude extracts of nine temperate-water ascidians for bioactivity against a range of marine organisms. The extracts generally produced moderate to weak effects, with the exception of those from the ascidian Clavelina lepadiformis, which consistently produced high mortalities against invertebrates. Some of these were then tested in simple palatability assays for feeding-deterrent effects. In general, no strong effects were detected for assays with shore crabs (Carcinus maenas) and fishes (the goby Pomatoschistus minutus and the grey mullet Chelon labrosus). Feeding-deterrent effects were observed with Carcinus maenas for the extracts of Aplidium proliferum, Botryllus schlosseri and Dendrodoa grossularia. It is postulated that these ascidians are unpalatable, but no toxic effects are evident.  相似文献

Surfaces from the habitat of adult Haliotis rubra were tested as inducers of larval settlement to determine the cues that larvae may respond to in the field. Settlement was high on the green algal species Ulva australis and Ulva compressa (Chlorophyta), the articulated coralline algae Amphiroa anceps and Corallina officinalis, and encrusting coralline algae (Rhodophyta). Biofilmed abiotic surfaces such as rocks, sand and shells did not induce settlement. Ulvella lens was also included as a control. Treatment of U. australis, A. anceps and C. officinalis with antibiotics to reduce bacterial films on the surface did not reduce the settlement response of H. rubra larvae. Similarly, treatment of these species and encrusting coralline algae with germanium dioxide to reduce diatom growth did not significantly reduce larval settlement. These results suggest that macroalgae, particularly green algal species, may play an important role in the recruitment of H. rubra larvae in the field and can be used to induce larval settlement in hatchery culture.  相似文献

 A study of rhythmicity of larval release in three species of intertidal brachyuran crabs, based on laboratory and field experiments, was undertaken at Inhaca Island, southern Mozambique, using Leptodius exaratus and Macrophthalmus grandidieri from December 1994 to January 1995, and Arcotheres palaensis from April to July 1995. L. exaratus and M. grandidieri showed a semi-lunar cycle in larval release. The release of larvae for L. exaratus, a species having conspicuous larvae, occurred in the first half of the night, after the post-crepuscular high tide, which suggests maximisation of protection of larvae from visual predation. The larval release activity matched the late spring and early neap tides. Results from the field were similar to those from the laboratory. M. grandidieri, having inconspicuous larvae, did not show a pattern related to the light–dark cycle and hatched during spring tides (around full and new moons) to maximise larval dispersion. A. palaensis, living inside the host mussel which inhabits the lowest section of the intertidal zone, did not show a relation with moon phase, tidal or light–dark cycles. Ascidian specimens were collected from the Indian River Lagoon, Florida, USA, in November 1987. Eudistoma olivaceum (Van Name) was fouled by only two species of epifaunal invertebrates and the percent cover of epibionts was negligible. Colonies of E. capsulatum (Van Name) were fouled by up to 17 species of epifaunal invertebrates, epibionts covered an average of 12.5% of the surface area of these colonies. Extracts of E. olivaceum exhibited potent cytotoxic, antimicrobial and antiviral activity in laboratory bioassays, while the activity of extracts of E. capsulatum was insignificant. The toxicity of extracts of each ascidian was negatively related to the percent cover of fouling organisms. Surface acidity of each ascidian was positively related to the percent cover of epibionts: E. olivaceum was nearly neutral (pH=6), while E. capsulatum was highly acidic (pH=1 to 2). Larval settlement and growth of ancestrulae of the cheilostome bryozoan Bugula neritina (Linnaeus) were inhibited at very low concentrations of crude extract of E. olivaceum. Crude extracts of E. capsulatum inhibited settlement and growth of B. neritina only at concentrations of approximately an order of magnitude greater than those of E. olivaceum. Differences in the degree to which these congeneric ascidians are fouled is related to differences in the chemical defenses they possess. Acidity is not an effective inhibitor of settlement by epifaunal invertebrates.  相似文献

Didemnum candidum Savigny, 1816 is an abundant member of the fouling community encrusting docks in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. In the laboratory, larvae of D. candidum are positively phototactic upon release, but become indifferent to the direction of light prior to settlement. In both the laboratory and the field, settlement is most abundant on shaded, downward-facing surfaces, the location where juvenile survival is greatest. The colonial ascidians Diplosoma listerianum Milne-Edwards, 1842 and Diplosoma sp. also settle abundantly on shaded undersurfaces in the field. Juvenile survival of the Diplosoma species is not affected by exposure to direct light, while survival is greatest on downward-facing surfaces. For Didemnum candidum, light is an important environmental cue used by larvae to locate settlement sites on shaded, downward-facing surfaces where juvenile survival is enhanced.  相似文献

For marine organisms, decoupling between the planktonic larval stage and the benthic-associated juvenile stage can lead to variable patterns of population replenishment, which have the potential to influence the effectiveness of marine reserves. We measured spatial and temporal variability in larval supply and recruitment of fishes to coral reefs of different protection levels and tested whether protection level influenced the relationship between supply and recruitment. We sampled pre-settlement larvae and newly settled recruits from four reefs (two reserves and two non-reserves) in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, USA. Replicate point measures of larval supply over 14 months and 17 monthly measurements of recruitment varied significantly among months and sites. Sites with the same protection level had significantly different patterns of larval supply as well as larval and recruit diversity, but recruitment magnitude differed only by protection level, where densities were greater at reserves. Differences in larval supply among sites included two particularly large peaks in larval abundance at one site, possibly associated with the observed passage of small-scale oceanographic features. To examine whether relationships between larval supply and recruitment varied by protection level, we selected one species that was present in both the light trap samples and the monthly recruitment surveys. Recruitment of the bicolor damselfish Stegastes partitus was significantly and positively related to larval supply at three of the four sites thus, protection level did not influence this linkage. Since local variability among sites can lead to spatial differences in population replenishment, characterization of larval supply and recruitment to potential marine reserve sites may help to identify optimal locations in a region and contribute to more effective reserve design.  相似文献

Field and laboratory studies compared two features of larval behavior in a pair of predacious sisterspecies of green lacewings: one (Chrysopa slossonae) a specialist on a single species of colonial aphids (the woolly alder aphid) that occur on branches and trunks of alder trees, the other (C. quadripunctata) a general aphid feeder whose primary prey is dispersed on foliage of diverse types of trees. First, a few hours after hatching, larvae of the two species develop significantly different phototactic responses; the differences correspond well with the spatial distributions of their prey. Most C. slossonae exhibited negative phototaxis, a response that helps move hatchlings inward on alder trees toward the woolly alder aphid colonies, whereas most C. quadripunctata hatchlings showed positive orientation to light, a response that tends to keep them in tree canopies with their prey. Second, in greenhouse experiments, a significantly greater proportion of C. slossonae larvae (second instars) molted within woolly alder aphid colonies and remained with the aphids than did C. quadripunctata larvae. These differences indicate that the specialist larvae have evolved a high degree of behavioral fidelity to their prey. However, larvae (second instars) of the two species that were released near ant-tended woolly alder aphid colonies in the field had similar recovery (= survival) rates. Consequently, natural selection may not act on behavioral traits that influence larval fidelity to prey during the late second and early third instars.  相似文献

Diplosoma virens is a colonial ascidian hosting prokaryotic algae Prochloron sp. in the common cloacal cavity of the colonies and is sometimes parasitized by notodelphyid copepods. In ascidian–Prochloron symbiosis, it is generally known that the host larvae acquire the algal symbionts from their mother colonies to maintain the symbiosis. A histological study of the sexually mature colonies of D. virens showed that the algal symbionts attach to pre-hatching larvae on the rastrum (plant rake) projected from the postero-dorsal part of the larval trunk, and then the rastrum is packed in the posterior half of the larval trunk that will become a cloacal cavity after metamorphosis. This process is the same as that of D. simile. Monthly sampling of D. virens colonies showed that they have embryos in summer in Ryukyus, situated near the northern-most limit of the coral reefs in the West Pacific. While the frequencies of copepod parasitism were variable among the populations, the colonies from a highly parasitized population had a significantly smaller number of eggs/embryos per zooid than the colonies from the less parasitized populations. Ovigerous females of the subtidal xanthid crab Neopanope sayi (Smith) and the high intertidal grapsid crab Sesarma cinereum (Bosc) were collected during the summers of 1986 and 1987 in the Beaufort, North Carolina (USA), area and brought into the laboratory, where rhythms in larval release were monitored. When crabs with late-stage embryos were put under a 14 h light:10 h dark cycle in an otherwise constant-environment room, an apparent tidal rhythm in release of larvae was observed for both species, with N. sayi releasing near the time of day and night high tides, and S. cinereum releasing around the time of night high tides. The time of sunset relative to high tide was a complicating factor, since larval release for both species was often concentrated around sunset when evening high tides fell several hours before sunset. When a group of N. sayi and S. cinereum were brought into the laboratory and placed under constant lowlevel light for 5 d, the release rhythm of the population persisted, thus implying that the rhythm is endogenous. Larval release near the time of high tide and often at night is common among brachyurans living in tidal areas, regardless of specific adult habitat, suggesting a common functional advantage. Possibilities include transport of larvae from areas where predation and the likelihood of stranding and exposure to low-salinity waters are high, as well as a reduced probability of predation on adult females. Results of the present study suggest that the importance of release after darkness may increase with increasing tidal height of the adult.  相似文献

Large populations of sea urchins, Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis (Müller), destroyed kelp beds along the Atlantic coast of Nova Scotia in the 1960's and 1970's. The origin of these large sea urchin populations is not understood. We have investigated the potential influence of variable growth and development of the planktonic larvae of sea urchins (in response to temperature and food abundance) on recruitment of benthic juveniles. The adult sea urchins were collected at Sandy Cove, Digby County, Nova Scotia, Canada, in December 1986. Temperature strongly affected larval size and the growth of the echinus rudiment within the range 3° to 9°C, and larvae grew most rapidly at 14°C. Food abundance had a smaller effect on larval growth, and these effects were apparent only at high temperature. Larvae fed the same concentration of two different algal food species grew and developed similarly. Correspondence between spring temperature variation and qualitative variation in sea urchin recruitment, as well as strong temperature effects on larval growth in culture, and the occurrence of a large, positive temperature anomaly in June 1960, all suggest that temperature effects on larval growth and development may have led to intense sea urchin recruitment in 1960 and the appearance of large adult populations 4 to 6 yr later. The surface of the colonial ascidianEudistoma olivaceum (Van Name) is almost completely free of fouling organisms. I provide evidence that this epibiont-free surface is maintained by the alkaloids, Eudistomins G and H. These alkaloids were extracted from colonies collected in the shallow subtidal of Indian River Lagoon, Florida. USA, in November 1987. Concentrations of less than one-fifth of those found in the living ascidian inhibited the settlement of the larvae of five invertebrate species relative to appropriate controls in laboratory and field trials. Standard pharmacological assays have revealed that Eudistomins G and H were not the most biologically active of the eudistomins, indicating that these standard assays are not necessarily good predictors of antifouling activity. In an examination of possible alternate roles for these eudistomins, they proved ineffective as a fish antifeedant. PinfishLagadon rhomboides consumed agar pellets to which Eudistomins G and H had been added at concentrations 10- to 100-fold higher than those effective against settling larvae. These findings indicate that biologically active marine natural products may serve specific ecological roles.  相似文献
