Experiments were conducted to develop a sensitive sublethal toxicity test protocol to determine the toxicity of municipal wastewater effluents to larvae of the red abalone Haliotis rufescens. In multiple tests, fertilized abalone embryos were exposed for 48 h to dilutions of a reference toxicant, zinc sulfate, and to dilutions of primary-and secondary-treated effluents. The resulting veliger larvae were examined microscopically for larval shell abnormalities. In a longer flowthrough experiment, abalone were exposed for the entire larval phase, from the two-cell stage through metamorphosis, to compare zinc effects on metamorphosis with zinc effects on short-term larval shell development. Dissolved oxygen, pH, salinity and temperature were measured daily in test solutions, and zinc concentrations were verified by chemical analysis. No observed effect concentrations (NOECs) for zinc were 39±2.1 g l-1 in three 48 h exposures, and 19 g l-1 for the 9 d exposure through metamorphosis. Median effect concentrations (EC50s) were 68±6.9 g l-1 in 48 h tests and 50 g l-1 in the 9 d test. Abalone larvae were affected at lower concentrations of primary than of secondary effluent.  相似文献

The feeding behaviors of Acartia clausi and A. tonsa were measured in samples of water containing low levels of a water-accommodated fraction of No. 2 fuel oil. The copepods fed normally at a hydrocarbon concentration of 70 g l-1, but their feeding behavior was altered both quantitatively and qualitatively at a concentration of 250 g l-1. Three types of response to the higher oil level were found. The first was total suppression of feeding. Both other types involved suppression of feeding on particles between 7 and 15 m diameter, but one showed no change in the ingestion of larger particles, whereas the other displayed increased feeding on particles larger than 15 m diameter. These results suggest that the species of Acartia studied use three different modes of feeding, each on a different size range of particulate material. Adult Elasmopus rapax, collected from the eastern coast of Venezuela in 1990, were exposed to seawater containing various CdCl2 concentrations ranging from 0.25 to 5.5 mol l-1. The 48-h and 96-h LC50 values obtained were 4.0 and 1.6 mol Cd l-1, respectively. In amphipods exposed to 1 mol Cd l-1 for up to 240 h, the apparent rate of cadmium uptake was higher in dead animals (most of which had molted during the preceding 24 to 48 h) than in those which survived throughout the treatments without molting. Thus, whole-body cadmium content reached 1.74 mol g-1 dry weight (dw) in the former and only 0.85 mol g-1 dw in the latter; the higher body Cd-load may have caused the increased mortality observed in molters. On exposure to cadmium levels above 0.5 mol l-1 the oxygen consumption rate of non-molters decreased from 2.2 to about 1.5 ml O2 g-1 dw h-1 over the first 24 h, remaining unchanged thereafter. The results place E. rapax among the most sensitive marine organisms yet studied concerning cadmium toxicity, and emphasize the usefulness of the Amphipoda as bioindicators and research tools for bioassays.  相似文献

After treatment with 1.0 and 3.3 g Pb kg-1 for 20 weeks in flowing seawater at ambient salinity and temperature, Crassostrea virginica accumulated as much as 6.57 and 11.42 g g-1 dry weight, respectively, and no mortalities were recorded. Lead uptake was curvilinear; however, the general trend was an increase in lead concentration over time. Dry weight of the oyster had no significant relation with tissue lead concentration (g g-1); however, a significant positive relationship existed between weight and lead content (g). A decrease in lead concentration in the tissues occurred from mid-August to mid-September despite continuous addition of lead to the seawater. Addition of lead to the seawater was terminated after 20 weeks (October), and lead loss was studied for the following 12 weeks. Lead loss was studied well after spawning in an attempt to eliminate any influence this might have on lead concentration in the tissues. After 4 weeks, approximately 54% of the accumulated lead was lost under conditions of a natural temperature decline. The biological half-life of lead in C. virginica tissues was calculated to be 5.5 weeks. In the ensuing 8 weeks, little or no lead loss was observed. Larvae from each treatment developed to the straight-hinged stage within 48 h with no apparent abnormalities. Lead appeared to have no adverse effect on larvae when parents had been treated with 1.0 and 3.3 g kg-1 seawater for 10 weeks.  相似文献

The shortterm (10–22 d) effect of Zn, Hg, Cu, Cd, Pb, and Ni on the length growth of Mytilus edulis is studied. Significant reductions of growth rate was found at 0.3 g Hgl-1, 3 g Cul-1, 10 g Znl-1, and 10 g Cdl-1 added to the local sea water, while concentrations of up to 200 gl-1 of Pb and Ni had no effect on the growth. With exposure to Cu and Zn, there was a linear reduction in growth rate with increasing metal concentration up to about 6 g Cul-1 and 100 g Znl-1. Above these levels, growth stopped with Cu, while with Zn it was stabilized at about 20% of control growth. When Hg and Cd were added, a curvilinear relationship between growth and metal concentration is indicated. With Hg, growth rate is nearly zero above 3–4 g Hgl-1, while the growth rate was 50% of control after 10 d of exposure to 100 g Cdl-1. At 2 g Cdl-1 there was a significant stimulation of length increase. Observed EC50-values for growth were 0.3–0.4 g Hgl-1, 3–4 g Cul-1, 60 g Znl-1, and 100 g Cdl-1.  相似文献

Mussels, Mytilus edulis planulatus, were collected from Port Phillip Bay, Victoria, Australia, in February 1984, to test the assumption that they are integrators of cadmium pollution. Groups of mussels were subjected to the same average dose of cadmium (21 g l-1), administered according to different dosing regimes over 4 wk (Regimes 1, 2, 3, 5); other groups received twice the average dose (42 g l-1) in half the time (Regime 4). During each regime, the mussels were exposed to the different cadmium concentrations for one week at each concentration. Nominally, the regimes were: (1) 36 g (Wk 1) to 26 g (Wk 2) to 16 g (Wk 3) to 6 g (Wk 4) Cd l-1; (2) 6 to 16 to 26 to 36 g Cd l-1; (3) 21 to 21 to 21 to 21 g Cd l-1; (4) 42 to 42 g Cd l-1; (5) 42 to 42 g Cd l-1 to background (<0.5 g) to background. Differences in cadmium accumulation by mussels from Regimes 1 and 4 were not statistically significant, nor were differences in accumulation between mussels from Regimes 2 and 3. However, mussels from Regimes 1 and 4 had accumulated significantly more cadmium than had mussels from Regimes 2 and 3. Accumulation by mussels from Regime 5 was not significantly different from that by mussels from any of the other regimes. These results suggest that, at least for cadmium, the assumption that mussels are integrators of pollution should be treated with caution. They also have implications with regard to the quantitative biological monitoring of pollution. For example, even in a carefully controlled monitoring program, using mussels of standard size and condition, significant differences in cadmium content between mussels need not indicate exposure to different levels of contamination. Batch cultures of the marine unicellular centric diatom Chaetoceros calcitrans (Paulsen) Takano were maintained by serial subculturing every 4 d into nutrient-enriched natural sea-water medium supplemented with 350, 950 and 1 400 g-at Si l-1. The diatom cultures removed initial silica concentrations of 350 and 950 g-at l-1 from the medium within 2 and 3 d, respectively. About 30 g-at l-1 of the highest initial concentration remained in the medium after 4 d. The mean final cell density with an enrichment of 350 g-at Si l-1 was 3.43±0.26×104 cells l-1 (median cell volume = 77.5±5.0 m3); with 950 g-at Si l-1, 8.55±0.55×104 cells l-1 (50.0±4.5 m3); and with 1 400 g-at Si l-1, 9.72±0.48×104 cells l-1 (37.3±5.0 m3). There was no significant difference in the final total organic weight of cells produced, which was in the range of 170 to 190 mg per 250 ml culture. This consisted of proportionately more lipid and carbohydrate and less protein from the treatment with 350 g-at Si l-1 than from the 1 400 g-at Si l-1 treatment.  相似文献

Mytilus edulis planulatus (Lamarck) were collected from Howden, South-east Tasmania in autumn 1981. Interaction effects of cadmium, copper and zinc during accumulation by mussels exposed for ten days to all three metals simultaneously were examined in a series of experiments in which each metal was tested at three concentrations. In general, interaction effects were most evident at the highest concentrations tested (20 g l-1 Cd; 20 g l-1 Cu; 200 g l-1 Zn) and led to a reduction in the accumulation of cadmium and an increase in that of copper and zinc. More specifically, high levels of zinc caused a decrease in cadmium uptake and an increase in copper accumulation. The presence of copper resulted in depressed cadmium accumulation while zinc accumulation increased. Cadmium tended to enhance zinc accumulation, but copper accumulation was only affected to any great extent when zinc was also present.  相似文献

Feeding, respiration and growth rates of oyster (Ostrea edulis L.) larvae reared at five food levels were measured throughout the entire larval period. Energy budgets were derived as a function of alga (Isochrysis galbana Parke) food concentration. Ingestion rate (IR, cells h-1) and oxygen consumption rate ( , nl h-1) were almost isometric functions of larval size [ash-free dry weight, (AFDW, g)], characterized by the equations: IR=803.9 AFDW1.13 and =4.85 AFDW1.09. Ingested ration was directly correlated to cell concentration up to a maximum at 200 cells l-1, with further increases failing to support higher ingestion rates. Likewise, growth rate linearly increased with food ration up to 100 cells l-1 (max. growth efficiency,K 1=25%) and reached a maximum at 200 cells l-1 (growth rate=5.6 m d-1), with further increases in food not supporting significantly faster growth. Maintenance ration was 2 to 3% daily dry weight (DW); optimum ration increased during larval development from 5 to 20% DW; maximum ration was 20% DW. During larval rearing, an increasing feeding schedule of 50, 100 and 200 cells l-1 from Days 0, 5 and 10, respectively, is recommended.  相似文献

The chlorinated hydrocarbon pesticide Kelthane was assayed for effects on food consumption, molting rate, cannibalism, respiration, mortality and behavior of the estuarine shrimp Crangon franciscorum Stimpson. The test system was a single-pass pulse-flow apparatus employing a modified Mount-Brungs style diluter. Treatment levels were 0, 14, 33 and 81 g l-1 Kelthane at 16.6°C and 19 S over an exposure period of 317 h. Exposure to Kelthane reduced food consumption, molting rate, cannibalism, and respiration. Behavior also was abnormal in exposed shrimp. They spent more time swimming, were less coordinated and had feeble escape reactions. Kelthane was very toxic to C. franciscorum with LT50 values of 163, 196 and 264 h for shrimp exposed to 81, 33 and 14 g l-1 respectively. The incipient lethal level of Kelthane is probably below 14 g l-1.  相似文献

Captan did not affect the survival of Dungeness crab (Cancer magister Dana) zoea exposed to 30 g l-1 during a chronic toxicity test lasting 69 days, but larvae were quickly killed (mean survival time = 9 days) in the same test by exposure to 450 g l-1 of the fungicide. Delay of molting occurred, however, for later stages at 30 g l-1. Survival of juvenile crabs was not reduced by exposure to captan for 36 days at 510 g l-1 or, in a second test, for 80 days at 290 g l-1. No deaths of adults exposed for 75 days to 340 g l-1 of captan were observed. Captan appeared to accelerate hatching of eggs at all concentrations tested from 100 to 10,000 g l-1. The development from prezoeae during a 24-h period was not inhibited by the fungicide, but at 3,300 and 10,00 g l-1, the two highest concentrations tested, developing zoeae exhibited a morphological deformity and were largely inactive. Under the prevailing conditions in the toxicity tests, the half-life of captan was estimated to be from 23 to 54 h. Because of the relatively low toxicity of captan to crab stages and its high rate of degradation in sewater, it is suggested that the agricultural application of captan near marine waters is not likely to affect natural crab populations or crabs in laboratory culture. Feeding, growth and bioluminescence of the thecate heterotrophic dinoflagellate Protoperidinium huberi were measured as a function of food concentration for laboratory cultures grown on the diatom Ditylum brightwellii. Ingestion of food increased with food concentration. Maximum ingestion rates were measured at food concentrations of 600 g C l-1 and were 0.7 g C individual-1 h-1 (1.8 D. brightwelli cells individual-1 h-1). Clearance rates decreased asymptotically with increasing food concentration. Maximum clearance rates at low food concentration were ca. 23 l ind-1 h-1, which corresponds to a volume-specific clearance rate of 5.9x105 h-1. Cell size of P huberi was highly variable, with a mean diameter of 42 m, but no clear relationship between cell size and food concentration was evident. Specific growth rates increased with food concentration until maximum growth rates of 0.7 d-1 were reached at a food concentration of 400 g C l-1 (1000 cells ml-1). Food concentrations as low as 10 g C l-1 of D. brightwellii (25 cells ml-1) were able to support growth of P. huberi. The bioluminescence of P. huberi varied with its nutritional condition and growth rate. Cells held without food lost their bioluminescence capacity in a matter of days. P. huberi raised at different food concentrations showed increased bioluminescence capacity, up to food concentration that supported maximum growth rates. The bioluminescence of P. huberi varied over a diel cycle, and these rhythmic changes persisted during 48 h of continuous darkness, indicating that the rhythm was under endogenous control.  相似文献

Regression analysis on data collected from Port Phillip Bay and Western Port, Australia in 1979 shows that there is a significant equilibrium relationship between total recoverable lead in seawater and its concentrations in the mussel Mytilus edulis (P<0.001). The concentration of lead in seawater should not exceed 1.27 g l-1 if the mussel is not to reach a lead concentration of 2.5 mg kg-1 wet weight, a value frequently used as a food standard for human consumption. When a lead value of 2.5 mg kg-1 wet weight is reached, the concentration factor by mussels for lead from seawater is 1969. The critical value of 1.27 g l-1 could be used as a marine water-quality criterion for lead in waters where mussels are harvested.  相似文献

Mytilus edulis collected from Tomales Bay, California, USA, during mid-winter 1979 were exposed to increased concentrations of dissolved copper under controlled laboratory conditions. A dose-dependent reduction in the latency of lysosomal hexosaminidase activity in digestive cells was induced after a 30 d exposure to copper. The half-time of the hexosaminidase staining reaction in sections of digestive gland from control mussels was 15.5 min; for mussels exposed to 25, 50, and 75 g Cu l-1 it was 11.8, 8.5 and 5.5 min, respectively. In addition, the dyecoupled reaction product was seen earlier in sections from individuals exposed to 50 and 75 g Cu l-1 (after 30 s) and 25 g Cu l-1 (1 min) than in sections from control individuals (2.5 min). Copper accumulations were demonstrated histochemically to have the same distribution as the hexosaminidase reaction product, indicating that copper is sequestered in lysosomes. Copper concentrations in digestive gland tissue, were related to the concentrations of copper in the water to which the mussels were exposed.  相似文献

This paper describes a survey of lead in soil and computer generated maps that have been derived for New Orleans, Louisiana. The soil survey included streetside, houseside and open space samples. Because the survey covered every census tract in the metropolitan area it was possible to construct a computer-generated map of the distribution of lead dust in the soils of the urban environment. The data base consists of coordinates, site characteristics and lead analytical results of 3,704 soil samples. The resulting graphics show peaks of lead ranging from 600–1,200 g per g in the streetside soil of the inner-city and a steeply declining slope to the suburban areas of the city where the lead content of streetside soils is less than 75 g/g. In the inner-city, the amount of lead in soils found near building foundations is 10 to 20 times higher than the soils adjacent to streets where the median lead content of soils is over 300 g g–1. In areas surrounding the city core (mid-city), the amount of lead next to the foundation and adjacent to the street are equivalent with medians of 110 g g–1. In suburban locations, the median lead content of soil along streetsides is 86 g g–1. Soils adjacent to surburban foundations has a median Pb content of 50 g g–1. The lowest median lead content in soil is found in open spaces, ranging from 212 to 40 to 28 g g–1, respectively, for the inner-city, mid-city, and suburbs. These observations are consistent with the production and consumer use of lead-based paint and leaded-fuels within the modern city.  相似文献

In order to assess the intake of lead and cadmium by consumers of home grown vegetables in urban areas, replicated experimental plots of uniform size, comprising summer and winter crops, were established in 94 gardens and allotments in nine towns and cities in England.The geometric mean lead and cadmium concentrations for the soils (n = 94) were 217 g g–1 (ranging from 27 to 1,676 g g–1) and 0.53 g g–1 (<0.2–5.9 g g–1), respectively. Compared with agricultural soils, the garden and allotment soils contained elevated levels of lead but not cadmium.Lead concentrations in the vegetables ranged from <0.25 g g–1 to 16.7 g g–1 dry weight and cadmium concentrations ranged from <0.025 g g–1 to 10.4 g g–1 dry weight. Lead concentrations were higher than reported background levels, although <1% exceeded the statutory limit for saleable food in the UK (1 g g–1 fresh weight). Cadmium concentrations were generally similar to background levels.  相似文献

Short-term laboratory feeding experiments were conducted to determine the response of the hard clam Mercenaria mercenaria (L.) (32 mm in mean shell length) to increasing sediment concentrations. Clams were fed mixed suspensions of Pseudoisochrysis paradoxa (50 and 150 cells l-1) and bottom sediments (0 to 44 mg l-1). Algal ingestion rate deelined with increasing sediment loads. This resulted primarily from a reduction in clearance rate, which declined by 0.08 l h-1 g-1 (1.3%) for every 1 mg l-1 increase in sediment load. This reduction was of similar magnitude for juvenile (13 mm) clams. At the algal concentrations tested, pseudofaeces production was intermittent and inconspicuous below about 10 mg silt l-1. Loss of algae in pseudofaeces increased with increasing sediment loads; however, even at the highest silt and algal concentrations, clams lost a maximum of only 18% of the algae cleared from suspension. Thus, pseudofaeces production is not expected to cause significant loss of algal food at the sediment concentrations normally encountered in the natural environment ( ca 40 mg silt l-1). Absorption rate of total organic matter remained constant, at least up to silt concentrations of 20 mg l-1. Experiments using dual 51Cr:14C-formaldehyde-labelled sediment indicated that clams were able to counteract the dilution of algae by absorbing a considerable fraction (21 to 22%) of detrital sedimentary organics. Absorption efficiency of pure P. paradoxa ranged from 82% at 50 cells l-1 to 58% at 150 cells l-1. Integration of physiological rate measurements suggests that at moderate to high algal concentrations (300 g Cl-1), growth improvement by the addition of silt, documented in mussels, surf clams and oysters, is unlikely to occur in M. mercenaria. It is suggested that a suspension-feeding bivalve's success in maximizing its energy gain in a turbid environment depends on the combination of two features: a high selection efficiency and a high rate of pseudofaeces production. The background levels of lead in Jamaica in soils and sediments, estimated at 37 mg kg–1, are relatively high compared with world averages. Several areas have values in excess of this due to mineralisation and pollution. One such is the residential Hope Flats/Kintyre area in which levels of lead up to 2.5% are found in the soils and up to 8 g kg–1 in the water of the nearby Hope River. The blood lead levels of a sample of children were in the range 5.7–57 g dl–1. The high lead levels suggest a potential health risk, particularly for the children. This can be minimised by programmes which include community education, case management and abatement to reduce the lead exposure.  相似文献

Estimates of daily fecundity, hatching success and fecal pellet production are reported for Acartia clausi females exposed for 10 d to low levels of phenol and ammonia. Copepods were collected in 1991 and 1992 from a southern coastal area of the Mar Grande of Taranto (southern Italy). A reduction in egg numbers and fecal pellet production was observed for females after 8 d of exposure to 500 g l-1 phenol concentration. Ammonia (120 g l-1) produced a significant increment in egg production, but hatching success was reduced by about 50% after nine exposure days. A. clausi was more sensitive to ammonia than phenol at high concentrations (24-h LC50 phenol-32.26 mg l-1; 24-h LC50 ammonia=0.91 mg l-1). At low concentrations, only long-term exposure to phenol determined a reduction in fecundity.  相似文献

Grazing rates of larger (Calanus finmarchicus) and smaller (Acartia clausii Pseudocalanus elongatus etc.) copepods on naturally occurring phytoplankton populations were measured during a declining spring phytoplankton bloom. During the initial period, dominated by Chaetoceros spp. diatoms, constant ingestion rates were observed in Calanus finmarchicus at suspended particulate concentrations above 300 g carbon l-1. Average daily intake during this time amounted to 35 to 40% of body carbon and reached a maximum of 50%. The feeding response of the smaller copepods was not so well defined, although a maximum daily intake of 56% body carbon was recorded. In both groups, feeding thresholds were at particulate concentrations around 50 g C l-1. The feeding response of C. finmarchicus was correlated with both a change in their own population and in the food cell type. Linear regressions describing the concentration-dependent feeding response were: ingestion rate (IR)=1.16 total particulate volume (TPV)-36.15 during the initial part of the period compared with IR=0.41 TPV-12.18 for the latter period. C. finmarchicus filtered out slightly larger (x 1.2 diameter) particles than the small copepods and, in both groups, some filtering adjustment was made to accomodate to modal changes in the phytoplankton population from 20–30 m to 10 m diameter cells. Particle production during feeding was frequently evident in the smallest size ranges of particles and the ratio of particle production to ingestion rate was greater at low feeding rates.  相似文献
