The sponge Tetilla sp. (Tetractinomorpha: Tetillidae) is a common species in the eastern Mediterranean. This sponge inhabits four different habitat types differing in wave impact and irradiance levels. Two of these habitats (a shallow cave and deep water) are characterized by relatively calm water, whereas the other two (shallow exposed site and tide pools) are in turbulent water with high energy flow. The present study examined the influence of physical (depth, illumination and water motion) and biotic factors on morphology, skeletal plasticity and reproductive traits among the four spatially separated populations. Sponges from tidal pools had significantly larger body volume than sponges from deep water and from shallow caves (ANOVA: tidal-deep P<0.0001; tidal-shallow caves P<0.05). Sponges from exposed habitats were significantly larger than deep-water sponges (ANOVA: P=0.01). In addition, individuals from tide pools and from the exposed habitat had a significantly higher proportion of structural silica than sponges from the calmer deep water and from the cave sites. Oxea spicules in sponges from the calm habitats were significantly shorter than in those from the tidal pools and the exposed habitats. The percentage of spicules out of a sponges dry weight in individuals transplanted from deep (calm) to shallow (turbulent) water significantly increased by 21.9±12.9%. The new spicule percentage did not differ significantly from that of sponges originally from shallow water. Oocyte diameter differed significantly between habitats. The maximal size of mature eggs was found in deep-water sponges in June (97±5 m). In the shallow habitats, a smaller maximal oocyte diameter was found in the cave, in May (56.5±3 m). Furthermore, oocyte density in shallow-water sponges was highest in May and decreased in June (with 88.2±9 and 19.3±9 oocytes mm–2, respectively). At the same time (June), oocyte density of deep-water sponges had just reached its maximum (155±33.7 oocytes mm–2). The difference in oocyte size and density between deep- and shallow-water individuals indicates an earlier gamete release in the shallow sponge population. The results suggest that plasticity in skeletal design of this sponge indicates a trade off between spicule production and investment in reproduction.Communicated by O. The spermatozoa of four species of the patellogastropod family Lottiidae (Lottia pelta, L. digitalis, L. strigatella, Tectura scutum) and one species of the archaeogastropod family Fissurellidae (Diodora aspera) were examined in 1990 using transmission electron microscopy. All have primitive or ect-aquasperm, typical of invertebrates using external fertilization. Sperm of the lottiid limpets are characterized by a 5 to 9 m-long head composed of a conical acrosome which constitutes >50% of the head length, and a cylindrical nucleus. The acrosome of all species of lottiids is differentiated internally, and has a posterior invagination 0.9 to 1 m in depth, into which an elongate acrosomal lobe protrudes. Between the posterior acrosomal lobe and the nucleus, the subacrosomal material is aggregated as a fibrous column. The midpiece of the sperm has a ring of 4 to 5 spherical mitochondria of 0.6 m diam, posterior to which is a collar of cytoplasm 1 m long, which sheaths the anterior portion of the axoneme. The size and morphology of the acrosome and large cytoplasmic collar clearly distinguish the spermatozoa of the Lottiidae from other families of Patellogastropoda. The sperm of D. aspera (Fissurellidae) is typical of the family of archaeogastropod; the head has a length to breadth ratio of 4:1, and the cylindrical nucleus is capped by a small acrosome, <25% of the total head length, which is deeply invaginated.  相似文献

The coralline alga Phymatolithon calcareum was dredged from 13 m in the Kattegatt, Baltic Sea, in December, 1980, and its rate of calcification was measured by 45Ca++-uptake methods. Light-saturated calcification rates at 5°C ranged from 15.8 g CaCO3 g-1 dry wt h-1 for the basal parts of the plants to 38.7 g CaCO3 g-1 dry wt h-1 for the tips. These age gradients were not apparent when calcification rates were expressed on the basis of surface area. Experiments with salinity (10, 20, 30) and temperature (0°, 5°, 10°, 20°C) indicated that optimum conditions for calcification were at 30 S and at temperatures above 10°C. Salinity had a greater influence on calcification rate than did temperature, and there was a positive relationship between salinity and calcification rate at all temperatures. In 6 mo old cultures, salinity was again the important factor, with all plants remaining healthy at 30 except those at the highest temperature (20°C). These trends, and the low calcification rates at 10S (4.6 g CaCO3 g-1 dry wt h-1 at 5°C to 8.6 g CaCO3g-1 dry wt h-1 at 20°C) suggest that low salinity may be the explanation for the general absence of P. calcareum from the brackish waters of the Baltic Sea. Short-term experiments in which salinity was kept constant while Ca++ concentration was altered, and experiments in which salinity was varied and Ca++ concentration kept constant, suggest that it is the calcium ion concentration and not salinity per se which affects calcification rates.  相似文献

Radiotracers were used to study processes controlling the accumulation and elimination of vanadium in the Mediterranean mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis. Vanadium uptake rates varied inversely with both salinity and vanadium concentration in water, but were independent of temperature. After a 3 wk exposure to 48V, the highest concentration factors were found in the byssus (1900) with much lower values computed for shell ( 70) and soft tissues (5). More than 90% of the total 48V accumulated was fixed to shell, suggesting that uptake is primarily a result of surface sorption processes. Much of the vanadium in shell was firmly bound to the periostracum and was not easily removed by acid leaching. Food-chain experiments indicated that the assimilation coefficient for ingested vanadium is low (7%) and that the assimilated fraction is rapidly excreted from the mussel. These findings coupled with knowledge of in situ and experimentally-derived vanadium concentration-factors have allowed a preliminary assessment of the relative importance of the food and water pathways in the contamination of mussels under conditions of acute and chronic exposure. Contaminated mussels transferred to clean sea water lost 48V at rates that depended upon temperature but were largely unaffected by either salinity or by vanadium levels in mussel tissues. Total vanadium depuration was slow and was governed by loss from a slowly-exchanging compartment with a characteristic half-time of about 100 d. Individual mussel tissues were analyzed for stable vanadium and the possibility of using these tissues, particularly the byssus, as bioindicators of ambient vanadium levels in the marine environment is also discussed.  相似文献

Orthophosphate uptake by a natural estuarine phytoplankton population was estimated using two methods: (1) 32P uptake experiments in which filters of different pore sizes were used to separate plankton size-fractions; (2) 33P autoradiography of phytoplankton cells. Results of the first method showed that plankton cells larger than 5 m were responsible for 2% of the total orthophosphate uptake rate. 98% of the total uptake rate occurred in plankton composed mostly of bacteria, which passed the 5 m screen and were retained by the 0.45 m pore-size filter. There was no orthophosphate absorption by particulates in a biologically inhibited control containing iodoacetic acid. Orthophosphate uptake rates of individual phytoplankton species were obtained using 33P autoradiography. The sum of these individual rates was very close to the estimated rate of uptake by particulates larger than 5 m in the 32P labelling experiment. Generally, smaller cells were found to have a faster uptake rate per m3 biomass than larger cells. Although the nannoplankton constituted only about 21% of the total algal biomass, the rate of phosphate uptake by the nannoplankton was 75% of the total phytoplankton uptake rate. Results of the plankton autoradiography showed that the phosphate uptake rate per unit biomass is a power function of the surface: volume ratio of a cell; the relationship is expressed by the equation Y=2x10-11 X 1.7, where Y is gP m-3 h-1 and X is the surface: volume ratio. These results lend support to the hypothesis that smaller cells have a competitive advantage by having faster nutrient uptake rates.  相似文献

Six mediterranean macroalgae were cultivated for more than 2 yr under shade culture conditions, after which light requirements for growth were investigated at 16±2°C. The saturation light levels for growth in the logarithmic phase were related to the bathymetric distribution of the algae on the shore. The eulittoral to supralittoral red alga Bangia atropurpurea was saturated at a photon fluence rate of 71 mol photons m-2 s-1, the upper sublittoral to eulittoral brown algae Scytosiphon lomentaria, Colpomenia peregrina and Kuckuckia spinosa and the sublittoral brown alga Stictyosiphon soriferus at 39 to 71 mol photons m-2 s-1, and the deep-water alga Choristocarpus tenellus at 19 mol photons m-2 s-1. The minimum light requirements for growth of B. atropurpurea and C. tenellus were determined by observing length increase for 56 d under limiting light conditions. The compensation and minimum irradiances required for growth of B. atropurpurea were 0.5 and 1 mol photons m-2 s-1 respectively. The corresponding values for C. tenellus were 0.15 to 0.28 and 0.5 mol photons m-2 s-1 respectively. C. tenellus was the siowest-growing species tested at saturating light conditions, but it grew faster than B. atropurpurea at 1 mol photons m-2 s-1. Both B. atropurpurea and C. tenellus were able to survive 56 d in darkness, but only the latter grew under darkness in the first 14 d.  相似文献

Homoscleromorph sponges such as Oscarella spp. are characterized by unique morphological features, and Homoscleromorpha were therefore recently proposed as the fourth class of sponges. The microbiology of these sponges was mainly studied by electron microscopy while molecular studies are scarce. The aim of this study was to characterize the bacteria in Oscarella sponges using molecular tools. Denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis revealed distinct bacterial profiles in five Oscarella species and several color morphs of Oscarella lobularis. These profiles are characteristic of low microbial abundance (LMA) sponges. This was further confirmed by analysis of a 16S rRNA clone library from O. lobularis that yielded a low phylum-level diversity with dominance of Alphaproteobacteria. Bacterial communities in O. lobularis were very similar among different individuals (collected at the same site and time), five different color morphs, and specimens from different depths and locations, indicating a species-specific association. These results allow novel insights into the microbiology of the first known LMA sponge genus within the new class Homoscleromorpha.  相似文献

The compound eye of Nephrops norvegicus (L.) is of the superposition type, well-adapted to the low levels of light prevailing at the sea bed during the activity periods of the species. Only the proximal retinal shielding pigment responds to light, the distal retinal shielding pigment being in the dark-adapted position at all times. The response of the proximal pigment appears to vary seasonally. Field observations compared light intensity at the sea bed with the numbers of N. norvegicus caught by trawl at various times of day in the Irish Sea in summer and winter. Laboratory experiments were combined with these field data to indicate that light is an important modulator of locomotor activity in this species.  相似文献

This study examines the effect of short period water waves on the longitudinal mixing of pollutants in open channel flow. These waves create orbital motions and therefore increase the magnitude of the dispersion coefficient. Experiments are conducted for non-wavy and wavy flow. The values of the longitudinal dispersion coefficients are determined by applying the method of least squares to the measured solute concentrations at various time intervals. For non-wavy flow, the measured values of longitudinal dispersion coefficient match closely with those computed from the empirical equation given by Seo [1]. For wavy flow, a new factor called the wave parameter (a/TU *, a=wave amplitude, T=wave period, U *=shear velocity) is found important and a nonlinear multiple regression analysis is used to derive a new expression for the wave induced longitudinal dispersion coefficient (WILDC). An uncertainty analysis is conducted as per IS Code 5168 and the confidence interval is determined. Linear water wave theory is applied to modify the existing expression of the longitudinal dispersion coefficient of Seo [1] by including the effect of short waves. A mathematical model for WILDC is then developed. Comparative study between wavy and non-wavy flow cases has been conducted. The results clearly show an increase in the magnitude of longitudinal dispersion coefficient in the presence of waves.  相似文献

Symbiotic bacteria from six Oscarella species (adults and embryos) collected in the Mediterranean Sea (O. lobularis, O. tuberculata, O. imperialis, O. microlobata, O. viridis) and the Sea of Japan (O. malakhovi) were investigated by scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. In most cases, symbionts are rather numerous. Each sponge species has a definite set of bacterial morphological types. All bacteria are extracellular. Symbionts occupy the mesohyl of adult sponges or intercellular space in embryos and are often in contact with mesohylar filaments or cells. Bacteria of some morphotypes have characteristic blebs. Most symbionts are gram-negative, and two types of bacteria have traits of Archaea and one type of bacteria is similar to Planctomycetes. Data on morphology of bacterial symbionts can be a good additional character for identification of Oscarella species, which have no skeleton.  相似文献

Zooplankton (>800 m) and water samples were collected at night at eleven stations in Parry Channel and adjacent waters, between 28 August and 14 September 1986. Chlorophyll concentrations varied between 17 g l-1 at the surface at one station in Wellington Channel, Canada, and 1.5 g l-1 throughout the top 30 m at one station in Byam Martin Channel, Canada. In tows from 0 to 50 m the zooplankton community at all stations was dominated by varying proportions of three species,Calanus hyperboreus, C. glacialis andMetridia longa. Levels of chlorophyllderived pigments inC. hyperboreus Stages V, IV and III were correlated with the concentration of chlorophyll at the chlorophyll maximum. Defecation rate constants, measured for the different stages where present, were variable but not correlated with ambient chlorophyll concentrations. Ammonia excretion was measured simultaneously for the communities in which defecation was being measured in the invividual species and stages. In these experiments the rate of ammonia accumulation decreased significantly over the period during which the copepods were actively defecating (usually the first 3 h) and then tended to a constant level (over the next 18 to 20 h). The time courses of ammonia accumulation could be described by a model comprised of the sum of a straight line and a saturating curve. For seven experiments the ammonia release given by the asymptote of the saturating component was correlated with the estimate of community defecation, obtained by summing the individual defecations, suggesting that the two processes were closely associated. Weight specific defecation and weight specific defecation-associated ammonia excretion were both correlated with ambient chlorophyll concentration. The ratio of initial to basal ammonia excretion rate varied between 2 and 20, so that defecation-associated ammonia release may be important in the estimation of in vivo nitrogen excretion or regeneration rates.  相似文献

Symbiotic cyanobacteria are associated with marine sponges in three ways: the majority are free-living in the mesohyl; large aggregates occur in cyanocytes (specialized, vacuolated archeocytes); and few are present in digestive vacuoles. The cyanobacteria in Jaspis stellifera and Neofibularia irata are morphologically similar to those described in Mediterranean sponges, whereas those in Pericharax heteroraphis are different. The freeliving bacterial populations are morphologically similar, although the number of bacteria varies between the species. The fourth sponge Ircinia wistarii contains a mixed bacterial population unlike those in the other sponges. Sponge digestion of microbial associates is rare and not considered to contribute significant nutrients.  相似文献

Seventeen Longhurst Hardy Plankton Recorder profiles were taken over a diel cycle in January 1990 to study the feeding of four major copepods over the South Georgia shelf. Ontogenetic changes in vertical migration were followed and feeding cycles determined by gut fluorometry for Calanoides acutus Stage CV, Calanus sinillimus CV and CVI, C. propinquus CV and Rhincalanus gigas CV and CVI. In common with a neighbouring oceanic site visited two weeks later and reported elsewhere, all four species had a diel cycle of feeding and migration. The vertical distributions of C. simillimus (all stages), R. gigas (nauplii) and Euphausia frigida (postlarvae) were similar at both sites, the night being spent within the chlorophyll maximum at 15 to 30 m. However, the biomass dominants, C. acutus and R. gigas, dwelt below the chlorophyll maximum, about 30 m deeper than their oceanic counterparts. Unlike the oceanic site, feeding at the shelf site was not restricted to darkness, but increased 6 to 10 h before nightfall and finished at dawn; the intervening period coincided with sinking and digestion. Daylight feeding may have been induced by the shorter night, lower light levels or greater food requirements at the shelf site, despite planktonic predators being over three times more abundant. Daily ration estimates for R. gigas at both sites were only 2% body carbon per day. These low values contrast with its smaller competirors, whose rations were in the range 5.6 to 27%.  相似文献

Campanularia everta is an epiphytic hydroid that may form dense populations on the macroalga Halimeda tuna. The main objects of this study were to quantify sexual reporduction and estimate sexual reproductive output of this hydroid. Sexual reproduction occurred from mid-October to mid-December 1991 along the Spanish Mediterranean coast. During this period, male and female colonies formed gonangia. Four oocytes mature in each female gonangium, and embryonic development starts probably after internal fertilization occurs. Planulae complete their development within a mucus sheath attached to the top of the gonotheca (acrocyst). Eight successive gonangia with a life-span of 1 wk each were formed over a 2 mo period. The fertile period was characterized by high initial production of gonangia followed by a progressive decline resulting from a decrease both in the number of fertile colonies and in the gonangia density of fertile colonies. Annual production was estimated at 42000 gonangia m-2, representing 83000 oocytes m-2. The high fertilization rates observed (77 to 100%) yielded a minimum production of 64000 planulae m-2. Reproduction in C. everta is characterized by: (1) a high number of larvae produced m-2; (2) formation and gradual release of larvae throughout the sexual reproduction period; (3) direct formation of planulae with no intermediate medusa stage; (4) low dispersive ability of the planula. All these mechanisms are part of a reproductive strategy designed to ensure the permanence of the population in its habitat.  相似文献

Sponge systematics has been traditionally based on the study of the skeleton (spicules and spongin fibres). However, sponges of the genus Chondrosia are devoid of those skeletal features, making it difficult to distinguish between different species in the genus. Chondrosia reniformis Nardo, 1847, the type species of the genus, was described from the Mediterranean Sea. The lack of distinguishing morphological features may have been responsible for the widespread assignment of specimens of the genus to this species; as a result C. reniformis is considered to be a cosmopolitan species. In this work, populations of C. reniformis from the western Mediterranean (France) and the West Atlantic (Bermuda and Brazil) were analysed using allozyme electrophoresis for 13 enzyme loci. Levels of mean heterozygosity were high (Bermuda and Brazil H=0.27 and W Mediterranean H=0.12), as is often observed in sponge species. Gene identities observed between West Atlantic and Mediterranean populations were low (I=0.40-0.52, typical values for congeneric species), including the presence of four diagnostic loci. This level of divergence clearly shows that they are not conspecific. Hence, a worldwide or cosmopolitan distribution of C. reniformis would seem improbable. However, the West Atlantic samples (Bermuda and Brazil) were genetically similar (gene identity, I=0.88-0.95) over a distance of 8,000 km. This is the first report of genetic homogeneity in a sponge species over such a large geographical distance.  相似文献

Photosynthetic parameters for netplankton (>22 m) and nanoplankton (<22 m) varied over similar ranges but exhibited different seasonal and geographic patterns of variation. Nanoplankton a was relatively constant (0.06 mg C [mg Chl · h]-1 [E m-2 s-1]-1), but P m B (mg C [mg Chl · d]-1) was an exponential function of temperature independent of nutrient concentration and vertical stability in the euphotic zone. The temperature function gives a P m B of 24 at 25°C for nanoplankton growing in an estuarine environment characterized by high nutrient concentrations and a shallow, stratified euphotic zone. Variations in netplankton a and P m B were less predictable and were not correlated with temperature, nutrients or vertical stability. Chain forming diatoms with small cells were able to achieve high (0.10 to 0.15) and P m B (20 to 24) that were 3 to 5 times higher than large-celled diatoms and dinoflagellates were able to achieve.  相似文献

In June 1983,in situ water-sediment interface experiments were conducted with the submersible Cyana at 2 000 m depth in the Bay of Biscay. Dissolved or particulate14C-labelled organic compound was injected into a compartment of a box-corer specifically adapted for use with the submersible. After incubation, the biochemical reactions were stopped by addition of Formalin. In the laboratory, the pathways of the labelled molecules in the various extracts were followed by means of chemical and granulometric fractionation and isolation of meiofauna. Various experiments run at 1 atm and atin situ pressures, for incubation times of between 3 and 144 h, revealedin situ biochemical transformation. After recovery of the samples, activity at 1 atm was low, with only 4% of the radioactivity being recovered in the macromolecules against 84% for thein situ experiments. These results comprise new evidence of the existence of a rapid biochemical transformation at great depth in the ocean and therefore of the activity of the microflora, microfauna and meiofauna which are living in the superficial sediment.

When echinoids feed on sponges, silicate spicules of the sponge were found to enter their body either by penetration through the wall of the food canal into coelomic cavities or by penetration into skeletal plates and spines. The spicules, which have penetrated into the coelom, obviously evoke a kind of protective answer. They were found to be entangled by clusters of cell remnants, the so-called brown bodies. The brown bodies contain melanin and gather at special sites of the echinoid body; these are the Stewart Organs, the gills and the inner side of the ambulacral plates. Sometimes the silicate spicule becomes surrounded by a calcareous sheath. The length of the sponge spicules makes their removal impossible, so that they are stored. The spicules penetrating into the plates are partly incorporated into the stereom. The four species examined in this study were Asthenosoma ijimai, Araeosoma owstoni, Diadema setosum (collected in Sagami Bay, Japan in 1991) and Hapalosoma gemmiferum (collected in Suruga Bay, Japan in 1991).  相似文献

In April, July and August 1989 and February 1990, the delta region of the Fly River was surveyed to establish the aerial extent of mangrove forests, their species composition, tree densities and basal areas, and potential net primary production. Mangrove forests cover 87 400 ha, mainly on islands within the delta. Twentynine mangrove plant species were recorded, but there were only three major forest types in the delta.Rhizophora apiculata-Bruguiera parviflora forests (hereafterRhizophora-Bruguiera forests) predominated in regions where river water salinities were >10. These forests covered 31 500 ha and had mean total tree densities and basal areas of 2027 stems ha–1 and 21 m2 ha–1, respectively. Forests of the palmNypa fruticans (hereafterNypa forests) covered 38 400 ha, mainly in regions where river salinities were ~1 to 10, and had mean total densities and basal areas of 4431 stems ha–1 and 38 m2 ha–1, respectively. Forests dominated byAvicennia marina and/orSonneratia lanceolata (hereafterAvicennia-Sonneratia forests) predominated on accreting banks of sediment and covered 17 500 ha. In very low-salinity (< 1) regions there are large monospecific stands ofS. lanceolata. Mean total densities and basal areas forAvicennia-Sonneratia forests were 7036 stems ha–1 and 22 m2 ha–1, respectively. Mean net primary productivity (kg C ha–1 d–1) was estimated to be 26.7, 27.1 and 19.0 forRhizophora-Bruguiera, Nypa andAvicennia-Sonneratia forests, respectively. Total daily net primary production by all mangrove forests was estimated at 2214 t carbon. Using assumptions based on work in tropical Australia, it was estimated that ~678 t carbon (or 31% of primary production) were exported daily from mangrove forests to the waters of the delta.Contribution No. 550 from the Australian Institute of Marine Science  相似文献

Growth characteristics and nutrient uptake kinetics were determined for zooxanthellae (Gymnodinium microadriaticum) in laboratory culture. The maximum specific growth rate (max) was 0.35 d-1 at 27 °C, 12 hL:12 hD cycle, 45 E m-2 s-1. Anmmonium and nitrate uptake by G. microadriaticum in distinct growth phases exhibited Michaelis-Menten kinetics. Ammonium half-saturation constants (Ks) ranged from 0.4 to 2.0 M; those for nitrate ranged from 0.5 to 0.8 M. Ammonium maximum specific uptake rates (Vmax) (0.75 to 1.74 d-1) exceeded those for nitrate (0.14 to 0.39 d-1) and were much greater than the maximum specific growth rate (0.35 d-1), suggesting that ammonium is the more significant N source for cultured zooxanthellae. Ammonium and nitrate Vmax values compare with those reported from freshly isolated zooxanthellae. Light enhanced ammonium and nitrate uptake; ammonium inhibited nitrate uptake which was not reported for freshly isolated zooxanthellae, suggesting that physiological differences exist between the two. Knowledge of growth and nutrient uptake kinetics for cultured zooxanthellae can provide insight into the mechanisms whereby nutrients are taken up in coral-zooxanthelae symbioses.Contribution No. 1515 from the University of Maryland Center for Environmental and Estuarine Studies, Chesapeake Biological Laboratory, Solomons, Maryland 20688-0038, USA  相似文献
