Adult Elasmopus rapax, collected from the eastern coast of Venezuela in 1990, were exposed to seawater containing various CdCl2 concentrations ranging from 0.25 to 5.5 mol l-1. The 48-h and 96-h LC50 values obtained were 4.0 and 1.6 mol Cd l-1, respectively. In amphipods exposed to 1 mol Cd l-1 for up to 240 h, the apparent rate of cadmium uptake was higher in dead animals (most of which had molted during the preceding 24 to 48 h) than in those which survived throughout the treatments without molting. Thus, whole-body cadmium content reached 1.74 mol g-1 dry weight (dw) in the former and only 0.85 mol g-1 dw in the latter; the higher body Cd-load may have caused the increased mortality observed in molters. On exposure to cadmium levels above 0.5 mol l-1 the oxygen consumption rate of non-molters decreased from 2.2 to about 1.5 ml O2 g-1 dw h-1 over the first 24 h, remaining unchanged thereafter. The results place E. rapax among the most sensitive marine organisms yet studied concerning cadmium toxicity, and emphasize the usefulness of the Amphipoda as bioindicators and research tools for bioassays.  相似文献

Nannochloris atomus was maintained in exponential growth at photon flux densities (PFD) from 400 to 700 nm, ranging from 10 to 200 mol m-2 s-1. Growth was lightsaturated at PFDs in excess of 100 mol m-2 s-1, with a mean light-saturated growth rate at 23 °C of 1.5×10-5s-1 (1.2 d-1). The light-limited growth rates extrapolated to a compensation PFD for growth that was not significantly different from zero, although no changes in cell numbers were observed in a single culture incubated at a PFD of 1.0 mol m-2s-1. Dark-respiration rates were independent of PFD, averaging 1.7×10-6 mol O2 mol-1 C s-1 (0.14 mol O2 mol-1 C d-1). The maximum photon (quantum) efficiency of photosynthesis was also independent of PFD, with a mean value of 0.12 mol O2 mol-1 photon. The chlorophyll a-specific light absorption cross-section ranged from 3 to 6×10-3 m2 mg-1 chl a and was lowest at low PFDs due to intracellular self-shading of pigments associated with high cell-chlorophyll a contents. The C:chl a ratio increased from 10 to 40 mg C mg-1 chl a between PFDs of 14 and 200 mol m-2 s-1. These new observations for N. atomus are compared with our previous observations for the diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum in terms of an energy budget for microalgal growth.  相似文献

Monthly variation in photosynthesis, dark respiration, chlorophyll a content and carbon: nitrogen (C:N) ratios in different lamina sections of adult plants of Ascoseira mirabilis Skottsberg from King George Island, Antarctica, was investigated between September 1993 and February 1994. Light saturated net photosynthesis (P max) showed maximum values in September (12 to 25 mol O2 g-1 fr wt h-1), and decreased towards the summer to values ranging between 2.0 and 5.0 mol O2 g-1. In the distal section, however, a second optimum occurred in December (25 mol O2 g-1 fr wt h-1). Dark respiration rates were also highest in October and November and decreased strongly in December to February (6.0 and 1.0 mol O2 g-1 fr wt h-1, respectively). Gross photosynthesis exhibited high values between September and December. Concomitant with the seasonal decrease of photosynthetic efficiency () from mean values of 1.2 mol O2 g-1 fr wt h-1 (mol photons cm-2 s-1)-1 in September to 0.3 mol O2 g-1 fr wt h-1 (mol photons cm-2 s-1)-1 in January, the initial light saturating point (I k) gradually increased from 19 to 60 mol photons m-2 s-1. Likewise C:N ratios were low in spring (12 to 13) and increased in summer (20). In general, the photosynthetic parameters P max, gross photosynthesis, and Chl a concentrations were significantly higher in the distal section of the thallus. In contrast, C:N ratios were lower in the distal section of the lamina. The results show that photosynthesis obviously strongly supports growth of the alga in late winter to spring, as it does in some morphologically related brown algae from temperate and polar regions. The question whether growth is additionally powered  相似文献

Sea anemones (Aiptasia pulchella) containing zooxanthellae (Symbiodinium microadriaticum) were maintained in a long-term laboratory culture on a 12 h light (100 E m-2 s-1):12 h dark cycle. Photosynthetic oxygen production was measured for the symbiotic association and for freshlyisolated zooxanthellae. Light utilization efficiencies () were similar for both sets of zooxanthellae, suggesting negligible shading of zooxanthellae by animal tissue in this association. Whereas freshly-isolated zooxanthellae were photoinhibited at high irradiances (800 to 1 800 E m-2 s-1), zooxanthellae in the host continued to function at photosynthetic capacity. Time of day may influence photosynthetic measurements in symbiotic organisms, as it was found that photosynthesis in A. pulchella followed a diel periodicity at both light-saturating (1 200 E m-2 s-1) and subsaturating (150 E m-2 s-1) irradiances. There was a peak period of photosynthesis between 12.00 and 14.00 hrs. Light stimulated dark respiration rates of A. pulchella. Dark respiration of sea anemones increased somewhat towards the end of the light cycle and was always greater after exposure to high irradiances.  相似文献

The photosynthesis–irradiance response of Ecklonia radiata (C. Agardh) J. Agardh, a common kelp in the temperate southern hemisphere, was investigated in situ throughout the year and across a depth profile at West Island, South Australia. Temperature and irradiance environment altered throughout the year, varying at 3 m between 14–20°C and 279–705 mol photons m–2 s–1. Photosynthetic capacity (Pm) varied throughout the year between 177–278 mol O2 g–1 dry wt h–1 at 3 m and 133–348 mol O2 g–1 dry wt h–1 at 10 m. The irradiance required for sub-saturation of photosynthesis (Ek) varied between 97–152 and 81–142 mol photons m–2 s–1 for 3 m and 10 m respectively, and the respiration rate varied between 15–36 and 13–20 mol O2 g–1 dry wt h–1 for 3 m and 10 m. A clear seasonal change in photokinetic parameters was detected and provided strong evidence for a seasonal acclimation response. During winter an increase in the efficiency of light utilisation at low irradiance () was accompanied by a decrease in both Ek and that required for photosynthetic compensation. Pm also increased during the winter and autumn months and respiratory requirements decreased. These changes enable E. radiata to display an optimal photosynthetic performance throughout the year despite significant changes in the surrounding environment.Communicated by P.W. Growth and photosynthetic properties of the marine dinoflagellate Amphidinium carterae Hulbert were examined under continuous illumination in batch cultures at four different irradiances between 2 and 150 E m-2 s-1. The slope of both cell- and Chl a-based photosynthesis versus the irradiance curves was greatest for cells grown at 15 E m-2 s-1. The relative Chl a values cell-1 were 1, 1.5 and 2 for cultures grown at 150, 80 and 15 E m-2 s-1, respectively. A low-temperature (-196°C) fluorescence technique was used to examine cells for photoinhibiton. Photoinhibition was greatest for cells grown at 150 E m-2 s-1. However, significant photoinhibition of this species was noted even at 80 E m-2 s-1. No significant difference in the fluorescence pattern was found between cells grown at 2 and 15 E m-2 s-1. Time course studies indicate that photoinhibition may occur within 2 h following exposure to 350 E m-2 s-1 in cells grown at 15 E m-2 s-1 and is reversible when light levels are lowered within 4 h. The ecological significance of phytoplankton unable to cope with excess photosynthetic excitation energy is discussed.  相似文献

The reef coral Pocillopora damicornis (Linnaeus) was grown for 8 wk in four nutrient treatments: control, consisting of ambient, unfiltered Kaneohe Bay seawater [dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN, 1.0 M) and dissolved inorganic phosphate (DIP, 0.3 M)]; nitrogen enrichment (15 M DIN as ammonium); phosphorus enrichment (1.2 M DIP as inorganic phosphate); and 15 M DIN+1.2 M DIP. Analyses of zooxanthellae for C, N, P and chlorophyll a after the 8 wk experiment indicated that DIN enrichment increased the cellular chlorophyll a and excess nitrogen fraction of the algae, but did not affect C cell-1. DIP enrichment decreased both C and P cell-1, but the decrease was proportionally less for C cell-1. the response of cellular P to both DIN and DIP enrichment appeared to be in the same direction and could not be explained as a primary effect of external nutrient enrichment. The observed response of cellular P might be a consequence of in situ CO2 limitation. DIN enrichment could increase the CO2 (aq) demand by increasing the net production per unit area. DIP enrichment could slow down calcification, thus decreasing the availability of CO2 (aq) in the coral tissue.Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology Contribution No. 920  相似文献

Photoperiodic control of tetrasporangium formation was studied in two low intertidal populations of Bonnemaisonia hamifera (Trailliella-phase) in Galway Bay, Ireland between September 1985 and February 1986. Photoperiodic induction was affected by tides, principally by the time of day at which high and low water occurred through the spring/neap cycle. High water of spring tides falling at the beginning and end of the day reduced the effective daylength for plants, and caused an early onset of reproduction. The threshold irradiance signalling light-dark transition was estimated to lie between (1-) 5 and 10 mol photons m-2 s-1 (400 to 700 nm). Low water of spring tides falling in the middle of the day exposed plants to high air temperatures during periods when seawater temperatures were below the lower limit for sporangium induction. This caused reproduction to be resumed. Quantitative differences between the two populations were caused by microclimatic effects (temperature, light reduction during tidal flooding) resulting from their different vertical heights on the shore.  相似文献

Photosynthesis and growth in low light and survival under simulated winter conditions were studied in the freefloating green alga Ulva lactuca L., collected in Roskilde Fjord, Denmark during late autumn and maintained in stock in natural water. It adapts efficiently to low light by increasing chlorophyll concentration and light absorption and continues to grow at the lowest irradiance tested, 0.6 E m-2 s-1. This irradiance corresponds to minimum light requirements of deep-living marine macroalgae and phytoplankton growing under ice. The photosynthetic efficiency per unit of incident light is five-fold higher for U. lactuca grown at 1.7 E PAR m-2 s-1 as compared with 56.3 E m-2 s-1, and the efficiency per unit of light absorbed is twice as high. The maximum photosynthetic efficiency (0.051 mol C E-1 absorbed) is similar to values for shade-adapted marine phytoplankton. U. lactuca is able to survive for two months in the dark and to resume growth immediately when transferred to light. Exposure to anoxia and sulphide gradually reduces vitality, but does not affect survival over two months. Rigorous deep freezing is detrimental to survival of U. lactuca, while field samples show that more gradual, natural freezing is not. U. lactuca is not easily fitted into one of the traditional strategy concepts. U. lactuca is a very plastic species that combines rapid growth during favourable periods (opportunism) with high survival capacity in the same type of tissue during stress periods (persistence). U. lactuca occupies a niche as a free-floating form in sedimentary coastal areas that are devoid of attached algae.  相似文献

The feeding behaviors of Acartia clausi and A. tonsa were measured in samples of water containing low levels of a water-accommodated fraction of No. 2 fuel oil. The copepods fed normally at a hydrocarbon concentration of 70 g l-1, but their feeding behavior was altered both quantitatively and qualitatively at a concentration of 250 g l-1. Three types of response to the higher oil level were found. The first was total suppression of feeding. Both other types involved suppression of feeding on particles between 7 and 15 m diameter, but one showed no change in the ingestion of larger particles, whereas the other displayed increased feeding on particles larger than 15 m diameter. These results suggest that the species of Acartia studied use three different modes of feeding, each on a different size range of particulate material. Low-level hydrocarbon pollution affects each feeding mode differently.Contribution No. 973, Center for Environmental and Estuarine Studies of the University of Maryland  相似文献

The effect of light intensity, pH and carbonic anhydrase (CA) inhibitors on photosynthesis of the red marine macroalgae Solieria filiformis (Kützing) Gabrielson, collected from Taliarte (Gran Canaria, Canary Islands) in 1991, has been investigated. Plants taken from the sea (wild phenotype) developed spherical morphology (ball phenotype) after 2 mo culture in aerated tanks. The photosynthetic oxygen evolution in the wild phenotype was saturated at 100 mol photons m-2s-1, while the ball phenotype displayed saturation at 200 mol photons m-2s-1. The inhibitors of total CA activity (6-ethoxizolamide) and extracellular CA activity (dextran-bound sulfonamide) inhibited photosynthesis at pH 8.2, to 90 and 50% respectively, in both phenotypes. No inhibition of the photosynthetic oxygen evolution was detected at pH 6.5. CA activity was associated with both supernatant and pellet fractions of crude extracts of S. filiformis. The rate of alkalization of the medium by the algae was dependent on light intensity. We suggest that carbon dioxide is the general form of inorganic carbon transported across the plasmamembrane in S. filiformis. HCO3 transport into the cell takes place simultaneously by an indirect mechanism (dehydration to CO2 catalyzed by CAext) and by direct uptake. Extracellular (CAext) and intracellular (CAint) CAs are involved in the mechanisms of inorganic carbon assimilation by S. filiformis.  相似文献

The separate and combined effects of ammonium (10M) and phosphate (2M) on the ultrastructure of zooxanthellae (Symbiodinium sp.) from giant clams, Tridacna maxima, were examined in the field. Nitrogen addition significantly changed the ultrastructure of the zooxanthellae inhabiting the clams. After 9 mo exposure, the cross-sectional area of zooxanthellae from N-treated clams was significantly lower than that from other treatments [N=39.3 m2; C=47.9 m2; P=43.2m2; N+P=44.5 m2; (P=0.001)]. There was also a significant decrease in the size of starch bodies, especially around the pyrenoid of the zooxanthellae from N and N+P treatments [N=1.2 m2; C=2.0 m2; P=1.8 m2; N+P=1.2 m2; (P=2.08E-11)]. This presumably occurs as a result of the mobilization of organic carbon stores in response to stimulated amino acid synthesis under enriched nutrient conditions. These data strongly suggest that the symbiotic zooxanthellae of clams are limited to some extent by the availability of inorganic nitrogen, and that relatively minor changes to the nutrient loading of the water column can have substantial effects on the biochemistry of symbioses such as that which exists between clams and zooxanthellae.  相似文献

Michaelis-Menten uptake kinetics were observed at all light intensities. With constant illumination, the Vmax and K1 in nitrate uptake over the natural light intensity range of 0 to 2000 E were 0.343 g-at NO3–N(g)-1 at protein-N h-1 and 26 E, respectively. Nitrate uptake was inhibited at higher light intensities. The Ks for nitrate uptake did not vary as a function of light intensity remaining relatively constant at 0.62 g-at NO3–N 1-1. With intermittent illumination, the Vmzx for light intensity in nitrate uptake over a light intensity range of 0 to 5000 E was 0.341 g-at NO3–N(g)-1-at protein-N h-1. No inhibition of nitrate uptake was observed at higher than natural light intensities. Chaetoceros curvisetus will probably never experience light inhibition of nitrate uptake under natural conditions.  相似文献

The distribution of cyanobacteria in the surface waters of the North Sea was measured during July 1987. Numbers of cyanobacteria ranged from 2.5x106 to 1.7x108 cells 1-1. In the majority of stations, cyanobacterial numbers were highest in the near-surface water and a subsurface maximum was found at only one station. The distribution of 14C among the end-products of photosynthesis was determined for picoplankton (<1 m) and other phytoplankton >1 m throughout the North Sea. The majority of label was found in the protein fraction of both picoplankton and >1 m phytoplankton; incorporation into lipids and polysaccharides plus nucleic acids was much lower. We interpret the large incorporation into protein to be a consequence of nutrient limitation of these natural assemblages. Photosynthetic parameters of the two size fractions were also determined. Assimilation number (P m B ) and initial slope were greater for the picoplankton fraction than for phytoplankton >1 m but there was no evidence of significant photoinhibition of either fraction at irradiances up to 1 000 E m-2 s-1.  相似文献

Photosynthesis and respiration in Ahnfeltia plicata (Huds.) Fries (Gigartinales) was measured in a seawater flowthrough system at different temperatures, salinities and photon flux densities (PFD). The exchanges of dissolved oxygen and inorganic carbon were continuously recorded with an oxygen probe and a pH electrode measuring variation in CO2–HCO 3 - equilibrium as pH changes. Highest apparent photosynthesis at moderate photon flux density (PFD 50 E m-2 s-1) was found at 15°C and 33 S. Photosynthesis was measured up to PFD 500 E m-2 s-1 and no light saturation was documented. In the present experimental set-up, with continuous supply of fresh seawater, the number of limiting factors during photosynthesis measurements is reduced.  相似文献

Photosynthetic performance in the kelp Laminaria solidungula J. Agardh was examined from photosynthesis irradiance (P-I) parameters calculated from in situ 14C uptake experiments, using whole plants in the Stefansson Sound Boulder Patch, Alaskan Beaufort Sea, in August 1986. Rates of carbon fixation were determined from meristematic, basal blade, and second blade tissue in young and adult sporophytes. Differences in saturating irradiance (I k, measured as photosynthetically active radiation, PAR), photosynthetic capacity (P max), and relative quantum efficiency () were observed both between young and adult plants and between different tissue types. I k was lowest in meristematic tissue (20 to 30 E m–2 s–1) for both young and adult plants, but consistently 8 to 10 E m–2 s–1 higher in young plants compared to adults in all three tissues. Average I k for non-meristematic tissue in adult plants was 38 E m–2 s–1. Under saturating irradiances, young and adult plants exhibited similar rates of carbon fixation on an area basis, but under light limitation, fixation rates were highest in adult plants for all tissues. P max was generally highest in the basal blade and lowest in meristematic tissue. Photosynthetic efficiency () ranged between 0.016 and 0.027 mol C cm–2 h–1/E m–2 s–1, and was highest in meristematic tissue. The relatively lower I k and higher exhibited by L. solidungula in comparison to other kelp species are distinct adaptations to the near absence of light during the eight-month ice-covered period and in summer when water turbidity is high. Continuous measurement of in situ quantum irradiance made in summer showed that maximum PAR can be less than 12 E m–2 s–1 for several days when high wind velocities increase water turbulence and decrease water transparency. The Univeristy of Texas Marine Science Institute Contribution No. 695  相似文献

Uptake of cadmium by the eelgrassZostera marina   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The uptake of cadmium by the shoots ofZostera marina L. (eelgrass) was examined in the laboratory. Experiments were carried out in experimental chambers which allowed the separation of the leaves from the root-rhizome portions of intact shoots. Cadmium uptake by the root-rhizome portions over 24 h was directly related to substrate cadmium concentration (1.0, 5.0 and 10.0 g Cd ml-1) and varied from 6.5 to 30.0 g Cd g-1. Cadmium uptake by the root-rhizomes and the leaves in a substrate concentration of 1 g Cd ml-1 was also related to exposure times (24, 48 and 72 h). Maximum uptake by the root-rhizomes and the leaves was observed after 72 h at a substrate concentration of 1 g Cd ml-1 and was equivalent to 48 and 94 g Cd g-1, respectively. Translocation of cadmium from the leaves to the root-rhizomes was observed after 24 h, and at the end of 72 h was equivalent to 27% of the total leaf uptake. No cadmium movement from the root-rhizomes to the leaves was detected.  相似文献

The substrate analogue [14C]-methylammonium was used to study ammonium/methylammonium uptake by Symbiodinium microadriaticum (zooxanthellae). The value of the Michaelis constant (K m) for the uptake system was approximately 35 M with methylammonium as substrate; ammonium was a competitive inhibitor of methylammonium uptake, and the K m for ammonium uptake (determined as the inhibition constant, K i, for methylammonium) was 6.6 M. Methylammonium uptake by zooxanthellae was light-dependent. Methylammonium uptake rates of zooxanthellae which had been freshly isolated from the hermatypic coral Acropora formosa (0.85±0.05x10-10 mol min-1 cell-1) were lower than those of axenic cultures of the zooxanthellae from Montipora verrucosa (Acroporidae) grown under various nitrogen regimes (1.6 to 12x10-10 mol min-1 cell-1). Maximum uptake rates were found for ammonium-starved cultured M. verrucosa zooxanthellae (10.2 to 12x10-10 mol min-1 cell-1); M. verrucosa zooxanthellae growing with ammonium as nitrogen source and zooxanthellae which had been freshly isolated from A. formosa gave similar and considerably lower uptake rates (0.85 to 1.6x10-1 mol min-1 cell-1). These results suggest that either coral tissue contains sufficient ammonium to repress synthesis of the uptake system of the algal symbionts or, alternatively, there are additional barriers to ammonium transport for zooxanthellae in vivo.  相似文献

The concentrations of cadmium in 428 samples of the sea-skater Halobates micans from 57 locations in the central and south Atlantic Ocean ranged from 1.7 to 122 g Cd g-1 dry wt. The concentrations in females, males and nymphs were not significantly different. The data suggest that the cadmium concentrations in these insects are somehow related to surface currents. The highest values (50 to 70 g g-1, maximum value 122 g g-1) were recorded from the South Equatorial Current region; intermediate values (10 to 20 g g-1) from the Equatorial Counter Current and the North Equatorial Current; and relatively low concentrations (>10 g g-1) from the Canary Current in the north and the Benguela Current in the south. A remarkable feature of these data lies in the fact that they reveal areas of high Cd content which correspond closely with those indicated by data obtained by Bull et al. (1977) from a different set of samples, analyzed by different methods and obtained in different years.  相似文献

The object of this study was to evaluate the acute toxicity of cadmium in different post-embryonic stages of the penaeid shrimp Penaeus japonicus (Bate, 1888) and to determine the effect of sublethal cadmium on the osmoregulatory capacity used as an indicator of physiological condition. Tolerance to cadmium increases with the developmental stage. The least tolerant stages are the nauplii (48 h LC50: 124 g Cd l-1) and the zoeae (96 h LC50: 10 to 30 g Cd l-1). The most tolerant stages are the postlarvae (96 h LC50: 200 to 3500 Cd l-1) and juveniles (96 h LC50: 5500 g Cd l-1). In juvenile shrimp, 2000 g Cd l-1 significantly reduce hypo- and hyper-OC. The effect of cadmium on hypo- and hyper-osmoregulatory capacity illustrates a dose- and time-dependent response. Surviving shrimp recover their hypo-osmoregulatory capacity after 6 d of readaptation in cadmium-free seawater.  相似文献
