Two dissimilar renewable resource-based thermoplastic acorn nutlet (TPAN) materials were prepared via twin-screw extrusion with the aid of glycerol or monoethanolamine as plasticizers, and then two TPAN/polycaprolactone (PCL) composites with different plasticized systems were prepared. Mechanical test showed that glycerol-based composites had excellent tensile properties, and at a PCL content of 50 wt%, their tensile strength and elongation at break reached 14.4 MPa and 1,361 %, respectively. The micro-morphologic investigation of liquid-nitrogen brittle fracture surface indicated certain interface adhesion between glycerol-based thermoplastic acorn nutlet (GTPAN) and PCL. Dynamic mechanical thermal analysis , differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis demonstrated that the weight ratios of TPAN in composites significantly affected the crystallinity, glass transition temperature (Tg), melting temperature (Tm) and thermal stability of composites. Soil burial degradation analysis displayed that all composites had excellent biodegradability. These results demonstrated that GTPAN/PCL composites had superior mechanical and biodegradable properties, enough to partially replace the conventional thermoplastic plastics.  相似文献

In this work, high-alcoholysis polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) films were fabricated by melt processing and the plasticizing effect of compound polyol plasticizers on PVA were investigated with X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), rheological measurements, mechanical tests etc. Hydrogen bonding interactions occurred between PVA and plasticizer. With the increase of plasticizer, the flowability of PVA was improved and reached the maximum value at the plasticizer of 20%. Glass transition temperature (T g) and melting point (T m) decreased with the increase of plasticizer content. For the heterogeneous nucleation effect of plasticizer, new polymorph of PVA formed. The viscosity was sensitive to the shear rates. The incorporation of plasticizers into PVA resulted in the increase of elongation at break and impact strength, as well as the decrease of tensile strength.  相似文献

Blends of zein and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) were compared based on their tensile properties, thermal properties and morphology. Zein was blended with polyvinylpyrrolidone of varying molecular weights (10, 55, and 1,300 kDa) and films were cast from ethanol solutions. Films cast using the higher molecular weight polymers showed an improvement in tensile strength, up to a 24% increase, compared to control. Differential scanning calorimetry data for the blends showed single Tm and Tg values of an intermediate value between those of zein and PVP control samples. Field emission scanning electron microscopy images show no obvious inhomogeneities, and confocal fluorescence microscopy showed no decreased uniformity in the PVP/zein films compared to control. Electrospun fibers of the zein/PVP blends were also obtained. These findings suggest that zein and polyvinylpyrrolidone combine to form a compatible blend, the first such blend of zein with a synthetic polymer.  相似文献

Novel bio-based green films were prepared using wheat protein isolate (WPI) by solution casting method using Propylene Glycol as a plasticizer for packaging applications. The effect of the plasticizer content (10, 15, 20 and 25 wt%) on mechanical properties (tensile strength, young’s modulus and  % of elongation) was investigated. A thermal degradation and phase transition of the prepared WPI was assessed by means of TGA and DSC analysis. The results showed that the tensile strength and young’s modulus decreased and  % of elongation increased with increasing PG content. The ATR-FTIR and SEM were used for structural characterization and morphology of the films, respectively. FTIR studies reveals that the intensity of the bands corresponding to the amide groups increases with increasing PG content tending to increase protein–PG interactions. Further, the glass transition temperature was decreased and the thermal stability of the WPI was found to be increased by plasticization. The overall thermal stability of the films was improved and is attributed to the increase in mobility of the polymer chains.  相似文献

The addition of plasticizers to biopolymer films is a good method for improving their physicochemical properties. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of chitosan (CHI) blended with two hydrophilic plasticizers glycerol (GLY) and sorbitol (SOR), at two concentrations (20 and 40 wt%) on their mechanical, thermal, barrier, structural, morphological and antimicrobial properties. The chitosan was prepared through the alkaline deacetylation of chitin obtained from fermented lactic from shrimp heads. The obtained chitosan had a degree of deacetylation (DA) of 84 ± 2.7 and a molecular weight of 136 kDa, which indicated that a good film had formed. The films composed of CHI and GLY (20 wt%) exhibited the best mechanical properties compared to the neat chitosan film. The percentage of elongation at break increase to over 700 % in the films that contained 40 % GLY, and these films also exhibited the highest values for the water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) of 79.6 ± 1.9 g m2 h?1 and a yellow color (b o  = 17.9 ± 2.0) compared to the neat chitosan films (b o  = 8.8 ± 0.8). For the structural properties, the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction analyses revealed an interaction in the acetamide group and changes in the crystallinity of plasticized films. The scanning electron micrographs revealed that all formulations of the chitosan films were smooth, and that they did not contain aggregations, pores or microphase separation. The thermal analysis using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) revealed a glass transition temperature (Tg) of 130 °C for neat chitosan film, but the addition of SOR or GLY elicited a decrease in the temperature of the peak (120 °C). In addition, the antimicrobial activity of the chitosan films was evaluated against Listeria monocytogenes, and reached a reduction of 2 log after 24 h. The plasticizer concentration of 20 % GLY is sufficient for obtaining flexible chitosan films with good mechanical properties, and it could serve as an alternative as a packaging material to reduce environmental problems associated with synthetic packaging films.  相似文献

The use of fully bio-based and biodegradable materials for massive applications, such as food packaging, is an emerging tendency in polymer research. But the formulations proposed in this way should preserve or even increase the functional properties of conventional polymers, such as transparency, homogeneity, mechanical properties and low migration of their components to foodstuff. This is not always trivial, in particular when brittle biopolymers, such as poly(lactic acid) (PLA), are considered. In this work the formulation of innovative materials based on PLA modified with highly compatible plasticizers, i.e. oligomers of lactic acid (OLAs) is proposed. Three different synthesis conditions for OLAs were tested and the resulting additives were further blended with commercial PLA obtaining transparent and ductile materials, able for films manufacturing. These materials were tested in their structural, thermal and tensile properties and the best formulation among the three materials was selected. OLA with molar mass (Mn) around 1,000 Da is proposed as an innovative and fully compatible and biodegradable plasticizer for PLA, able to replace conventional plasticizers (phthalates, adipates or citrates) currently used for films manufacturing in food packaging applications.  相似文献

Epoxy resin prepared by the reaction of a diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) and m-xylylenediamine (m-XDA) was modified with 10% wt of epoxidized palm oil (EPO). The EPO was first pre-polymerized with m-XDA at various temperatures and reaction times. The resulting product was then mixed with the epoxy resin at 40?°C and allowed to react at 120?°C for another 3?h. The fully reacted DGEBA/m-XDA/EPO blend was characterized by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermal gravimetric analysis, tensile test, hardness indentation and dynamic mechanical analysis. The SEM study shows that different types of morphology, ranging from phase separated to miscible blends were obtained. A miscible blend was obtained when the m-XDA and EPO were reacted for more than 2?h. The results from DSC analysis show that the incorporation of EPO at 10% wt in the epoxy blend reduced the glass transition temperature (T g). The lowered T g and mechanical properties of the modified epoxy resins are caused by a reduction in crosslinking density and plasticizer effect.  相似文献

Poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) and natural fiber composites were prepared by melt compounding and compression molding. The influence of fiber type (i.e., bagasse, rice straw, rice husk, and pine fiber) and loading level of styrene-ethylene-butylene-styrene (SEBS) block copolymer on composite properties was investigated. Mechanical analysis showed that storage modulus and tensile strength increased with fiber loading at the 30% level for all composites, but there was little difference in both properties among the composites from various fiber types. The use of SEBS decreased storage moduli, but enhanced tensile strength of the composites. The addition of fiber impaired impact strength of the composites, and the use of SEBS led to little change of the property for most of the composites. The addition of fiber to PVC matrix increased glass transition temperature (Tg), but lowered degradation temperature (Td) and thermal activation energy (Ea). After being immersed in water for four weeks, PVC/rice husk composites presented relatively smaller water absorption (WA) and thickness swelling (TS) rate compared with other composites. The results of the study demonstrate that PVC composites filled with agricultural fibers had properties comparable with those of PVC/wood composite.  相似文献

Poly(lactic acid) is one of the most promising biobased and biodegradable polymers for food packaging, an application which requires good mechanical and barrier properties. In order to improve the mechanical properties, in particular the flexibility, PLA plasticization is required. However, plasticization induces generally a decrease in the barrier properties. Acetyl tributyl citrate (ATBC) and poly(ethylene glycol) 300 (PEG), highly recommended as plasticizers for PLA, were added up to 17 wt% in P(D,L)LA. In the case of PEG, a phase separation was observed for plasticizer contents higher than 5 wt%. Contrary to PEG, the Tg decrease due to ATBC addition, modelled with Fox’s law, and the absence of phase separation, up to 17 wt% of plasticizer, confirm the miscibility of PLA and ATBC. Contents equal or higher than 13 wt% of ATBC yielded a substantial improvement of the elongation at break, becoming higher than 300%. The effect of PLA plasticization on the barrier properties was assessed by different molecules, with increasing interaction with the formulated material, such as helium, an inert gas, and oxygen and water vapour. In comparison to the neat sample, barrier properties against helium were maintained when PLA was plasticized with up to 17 wt% of ATBC. The oxygen permeability coefficient and the water vapour transmission rate doubled for mixtures with 17 wt% ATBC in PLA, but increased five-fold in the PEG plasticized samples. This result is most likely caused by increased solubility of oxygen and water in the PEG phase due to their mutual miscibility. To conclude, ATBC increases efficiently the elongation at break of PLA while maintaining the permeability coefficient of helium and keeping the barrier properties against oxygen and water vapour in the same order of magnitude.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to investigate the properties of poly(vinyl alcohol)/chitosan nanocomposite films reinforced with different concentration of amorphous LCNFs. The properties analyzed were morphological, physical, chemical, thermal, biological, and mechanical characteristics. Oil palm empty fruit bunch LCNFs obtained from multi-mechanical stages were more dominated by amorphous region than crystalline part. Varied film thickness, swelling degree, and transparency of PVA/chitosan nanocomposite films reinforced with amorphous part were produced. Aggregated LCNFs, which reinforced PVA/chitosan polymer blends, resulted in irregular, rough, and uneven external surfaces as well as protrusions. Based on XRD analysis, there were two or three imperative peaks that indicated the presence of crystalline states. The increase in LCNFs concentration above 0.5% to PVA/chitosan polymer blends led to the decrease in crystallinity index of the films. A noticeable alteration of FTIR spectra, which included wavenumber and intensity, was obviously observed along with the inclusion of amorphous LCNFs. That indicated that a good miscibility between amorphous LCNFs and PVA/chitosan polymer blend generated chemical interaction of those polymers during physical blending. Reinforcement of PVA/chitosan polymer blends with amorphous LCNFs influenced the changes of Tg (glass transition temperature), Tm (melting point temperature), and Tmax (maximum degradation temperature). Three thermal phases of PVA/chitosan/LCNFs nanocomposite films were also observed, including absorbed moisture evaporation, PVA and chitosan polymer backbone structural degradation and LCNFs pyrolysis, and by-products degradation of these polymers. The addition of LCNFs 0.5% had the highest tensile strength and the addition of LCNFs above 0.5% decreased the strength. The incorporation of OPEFB LCNFs did not show anti-microbial and anti-fungal properties of the films. The addition of amorphous LCNFs 0.5% into PVA/chitosan polymer blends resulted in regular and smooth external surfaces, enhanced tensile strength, increased crystallinity index, and enhanced thermal stability of the films.  相似文献

Many controversial issues have recently been associated with plasticized poly(vinyl chloride) (pPVC) used in building applications, mainly for flooring. One of them has to do with the health impact of some plasticizers and thermal stabilizers based on heavy metal compounds. Recent advances in the synthesis of polyolefins based on metallocene catalysts can yield similar flexibility for formulations as is now available for those based on pPVC. Polyolefin copolymers are considered to be possible replacements for pPVC. The soil burial test has demonstrated that highly filled polyolefin elastomer formulations having a significant percentage of post-consumer polyolefins (up to 60% in laboratory conditions) have interesting properties from the biodegradation point of view. They are more resistant to microorganisms’ attack than plasticized flooring formulations based on PVC that are currently used, even in a very harsh environment as soil, where complex mixtures of microorganisms are present. The effect of microorganisms’ attack after soil burial was evaluated by visual examination, weight loss, water absorption and changes in mechanical properties.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate the application of grapeseed oil, a waste product from the wine industry, as a renewable feedstock to make polyesters and to compare the properties of these materials with those derived from soybean and rapeseed oils. All three oils were epoxidized to give renewable epoxy monomers containing between 3.8 and 4.7 epoxides per molecule. Polymerisation was achieved with cyclic anhydrides catalysed by 4-methyl imidazole at 170 and 210 °C. Polymers produced from methyl tetrahydrophthalic anhydride (Aradur917®) had greater tensile strength and Young’s Modulus (tensile strength = 12.8 MPa, Young’s Modulus = 1005 MPa for grapeseed) than methyl nadic anhydride (MNA) derived materials (5.6 and 468 MPa for grapeseed) due to increased volume of MNA decreasing crosslink density. Soybean and grapeseed oils produced materials with higher tensile strength (5.6–29.3 MPa) than rapeseed derived polyesters (2.5–3.9 MPa) due to a higher epoxide functionality increasing crosslinking. T g’s of the polyesters ranged from ?36 to 62 °C and mirrored the trend in epoxide functionality with grapeseed producing higher T g polymers (?17 to 17 °C) than soybean (?25 to 6 °C) and rapeseed (?36 to ?27 °C). Grapeseed oil showed similar properties to soybean oil in terms of T g, thermal degradation and Young’s Modulus but produced polymers of lower tensile strength. Therefore grapeseed oil would only be a viable substitute for soybean for low stress applications or where thermal properties are more important.  相似文献

Cellulose gel films were prepared by regeneration process using pre-cooled aq.(8 wt% LiOH + 15 wt% urea) mixture as solvent and ethyl alcohol as non solvent. The Terminus cattapa leaf extract diffused wet cellulose films were then dipped in 1–5 mM aq.AgNO3 solutions to allow in situ generation of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). Besides the in situ generation, some AgNPs were also formed outside the wet films in the solution. The AgNPs formed outside the films were observed under transmission electron microscope and scanning electron microscope. The nanocomposite films were also characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and thermogravimetric analysis and tensile test. The thermal stability of the composite films was lower than that of the matrix up to a temperature of ~300 °C and afterwards showed a reverse trend. The tensile strength of the nanocomposite films was found to be higher than the matrix but decreased with increasing concentration of aq.AgNO3. The cellulose/AgNPs composite films showed good antibacterial activity against E. coli (gram positive) and Bacillus sp. (gram negative). Based on the aforementioned properties, the cellulose/AgNPs composite films can be considered for antibacterial packaging and medical applications.  相似文献

The effects of a polymeric chain extender on the properties of bioplastic film made from blends of plasticized polylactic acid (p-PLA) and thermoplastic starch (TPS) were studied. Joncryl? ADR 4370S, a polymeric chain extender, was blended with TPS and p-PLA at a level of 1% (w/w). A co-rotating twin-screw extrusion process was used to prepare films with various ratios of TPS and p-PLA. Mechanical and physical properties of films, including film tensile properties, surface energy, moisture content, hydrophilicity, moisture sorption behaviour and thermal mechanical properties were determined. During extrusion, films enhanced by 1% Joncryl addition demonstrated more desirable and consistent qualities, such as smoother film edge and surface. Addition of Joncryl significantly improved film tensile strength, 0.2% offset yield strength, and elongation, especially evident with the 250% elongation of 70/30 (TPS/p-PLA) film. Total surface energy of films was not significantly influenced by addition of Joncryl. However, the polar contribution to the total surface energy of 70/30 (TPS/p-PLA) film increased after the addition of Joncryl. The study showed that blending TPS with p-PLA transformed TPS film from being highly hydrophilic to highly hydrophobic. On the other hand, addition of Joncryl had limited effects on moisture content, water solubility, glass transition temperature and moisture sorption behaviour of TPS/p-PLA blend films.  相似文献

Increasing demand in the use of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) leads to a debate about using potential foodstuffs for plastic production and a moral issue when starvation problem is taken into account. One of the solutions is recycling of PLA; however, recycling results in property losses during melt processing due to low thermal stability of PLA. This study focuses on using chain extenders to offset thermal degradation of recycled PLA. The effects of a diisocyanate and a polymeric epoxidized chain extender on the properties of the recycled poly(lactic acid) were investigated. In order to mimic the recycling process, PLA was subjected to thermo-mechanical degradation using a laboratory scale compounder. Chain extender type, loading and mixing time were investigated. On-line rheology and intrinsic viscosity measurements of PLA before and after chain extension confirmed that the molecular weight increased. Dynamic mechanical analysis, rheology and tensile tests revealed that the chain extenders led to a significant increase in modulus, strength and melt-viscosity. It was found that diisocyanate had slightly higher and faster chain extension reactivity than polymeric extender. Differential scanning calorimetry results showed an increase in the crystallization temperature due to the branched and extended chain structure.  相似文献

Blending of polylactide (PLA) with low stereoregularity and polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane grafted with arms of poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether, acting as a plasticizer, allowed us previously to obtain a novel stable elastomeric-like material. The present contribution focuses on the properties of semi-crystalline PLA plasticized with this compound. Melt blends of PLA with 5–15 wt% of the plasticizer, were compression molded, quenched and annealed, which enabled cold-crystallization. The glass transition temperature of the blends and their drawability depended on their crystallinity and plasticizer content. The best ductility was reached at the plasticizer content of 15 wt%; the achieved strain at break was 6.5 (650%) and 1.3 (130%), for the quenched and annealed material, respectively. The latter value exceeded 20 times the strain at break of neat crystalline PLA. The tensile toughness of the annealed 15 wt% blend was 12 times larger than that of crystalline PLA. Moreover, annealing of 15 wt% blend improved its yield strength by 40%. Despite the two peaks of the loss modulus, indicating the two glass transitions in this blend, no heterogeneities were found by scanning electron microscopy, indicating that the plasticizer enriched phase formed instead of distinct inclusions of the plasticizer.  相似文献

Soy meal, a co-product of the soy oil-based biodiesel industry, has up to 50 % protein content. The main aim of this work was to develop value-added application for soy meal. Soy meal was plasticized by glycerol and water, denatured by the addition of guanidine hydrochloride (GHCl), and then blended with poly (butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT), petroleum based tough biodegradable polymer. Characterization by FTIR spectroscopy confirmed that soy meal was plasticized and denatured. The blends of PBAT/soy meal (SM), PBAT/plasticized soy meal and PBAT/GHCl modified plasticized soy meal (mPSM) were fabricated by industry prevalent extrusion and injection molding process. The developed bioblends were characterized by thermal and mechanical testing. One of the important outcomes of this research was that elongation of the bioblend was found to increase by 80 % after plasticization and denaturation of soy meal. Scanning electron microscope analysis showed that PBAT/mPSM blends have smoother surfaces and better internal structures than the other two.  相似文献

The biodegradability of calcium stearate (CaSt) and cobalt stearate (CoSt) filled polypropylene (PP) films were investigated in this work. The PP films were prepared using melt blending technique followed by hot press moulding. On the basis of their tensile properties, the optimum amount of pro-oxidants was taken as 0.2 phr. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) were used for the characterization of optimized films. Presence of pro-oxidant in the PP was confirmed by the FTIR studies. Addition of pro-oxidants in the films decreased the thermal stability as revealed by TGA analysis. Crystallinity of the pro-oxidant filled PP decreased with addition of pro-oxidants as showen by DSC. The maximum biodegradation of CaSt and CoSt containing PP films was showen 7.65 and 8.34%, respectively with 0.2 phr. Both the microbial test and plant growth test (on corn and tomato) indicated that biodegradation intermediates were non toxic.  相似文献

Conventional direct melt mixing technology was investigated on zein and kafirin, two vegetable proteins extracted, respectively, from maize and sorghum. A lab scale internal mixer has been used to thoroughly study the thermo-plasticization process of the proteins with several plasticizers. Different compositions were investigated under different processing conditions. In particular, the lengthy procedures of forming the protein/solvent/plasticizer solution followed by drying or the protein/plasticizer emulsion followed by the precipitation of the extrudable resin, reported in the literature for these systems, were avoided and the protein and plasticizer were directly fed into the mixer to obtain a plastic-like material. The effect of plasticizer type and content and mixing process variables on the mechanical properties was analyzed. Compression molded slabs were transparent, strong and flexible, with properties similar to the cast films reported in the literature, prepared with the same type of plasticizers. However, lower plasticizer content was sufficient to produce equally flexible films, proving an enhanced plasticization efficiency of the mixing process, as compared to casting.  相似文献

In this study, poly(l-lactide) (PLA) films were fabricated by melt processing and the plasticizing effect of hexadecyl lactate (HL) (0, 5, 7.5, 10, and 12.5 wt% on PLA were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, tensile, transparency, and water vapor permeability tests. The SEM analysis revealed that PLA with 10 wt% HL appeared uniform with extra small bumps, confirmed the interaction between PLA and HL. The thermal analysis revealed a glass transition temperature of 57.4 °C for neat PLA film, but the addition of HL elicited a decrease in the temperature of the peak (43.8 °C). The incorporation of plasticizer into PLA resulted in the increase of elongation at break, as well as the decrease of tensile strength and tensile modulus. Even though a decrease in transparency was recorded, the PLA/HL blend films appeared transparent by visually observation. The water vapor permeability of PLA/HL blend films increased with the increase of HL. The PLA/HL blend films could effectively extend the shelf-life of fresh-cut pears as the commercial low density polyethylene films. The results indicated that the properties of PLA films can be modified with the addition of HL and PLA/HL blend films could serve as an alternative as food packaging materials to reduce environmental problems associated with synthetic packaging films.  相似文献
