In the analysis and design of municipal solid waste (MSW) landfills, there are many uncertainties associated with the properties of MSW during and after MSW placement. Several studies are performed involving different laboratory and field tests to understand the complex behavior and properties of MSW, and based on these studies, different models are proposed for the analysis of time dependent settlement response of MSW. For the analysis of MSW settlement, it is very important to account for the variability of model parameters that reflect different processes such as primary compression under loading, mechanical creep and biodegradation. In this paper, regression equations based on response surface method (RSM) are used to represent the complex behavior of MSW using a newly developed constitutive model. An approach to assess landfill capacities and develop landfill closure plans based on prediction of landfill settlements is proposed. The variability associated with model parameters relating to primary compression, mechanical creep and biodegradation are used to examine their influence on MSW settlement using reliability analysis framework and influence of various parameters on the settlement of MSW are estimated through sensitivity analysis.  相似文献

Database and information technology has been widely used in process industries to manage data related to environmental performance. However, apart from being collected and archived for subsequent retrieval, the data has not been effectively exploited for improving environmental performance. In this paper we report our work on application of data mining and knowledge discovery technology to the analysis of a database of aqueous effluents from an organic manufacturing plant. The focus is on developing a software analyser for Microtox prediction. However, this methodology is applicable to any ecotoxicity measurement and will therefore offer a means of minimising difficult and tedious testing. Principal component analysis is used to pre-process the data for removing noise and reducing dimensionality. Automatic clustering is employed to group the multidimensional data into classes, and from each class training and testing data sets are selected for developing a back-propagation neural network to predict Microtox. The result shows that the software analyser is able to give satisfactory predictions for both training and test data. The errors for all the training and testing data are shown to satisfy a normal distribution. The software analyser is further used to carry out sensitivity studies in order to identify compounds responsible for observed toxicity value, based on which improved process operational strategies can be developed. Several approaches are investigated, including correlation coefficient analysis, sensitivity study based on differential analysis, one variable deletion, fuzzy curve approach and combination of the above with principal component analysis.  相似文献

In this paper, we present a Web-based information system for pollution monitoring and analysis of Lake Ohrid. Our work is related to the ecological state of Lake Ohrid, which represents a rare natural ecosystem inhabited by many endemic and relict species. Aim of the study is to present the possibilities offered by the Web application, such as fast information access, support of distributed collaboration by information sharing instead of exchange, acquisition and analysis of pollutant data, database processing based on lake models, as well as GIS analysis. In this way, the data and the analysis are performed in one place and they are available to any user having only a Web browser.  相似文献

Weathering rates of base cations are crucial in critical load calculations and assessments of sustainable forestry. The weathering rate on a single site with detailed geological data can be modelled using the PROFILE model. For environmental assessments on a regional scale, the weathering rates for sites are scaled into regional maps. The step from sites to regional level requires focus on the spatial variation of weathering rates. In this paper, a method is presented by which weathering rates are calculated for 25589 Swedish sites with total elemental analysis for the soil. Based on a part of the results, a methodology for creating area covering maps by geostatistical analysis and kriging is described. A normative reconstruction model was used to transform total elemental analysis to mineralogy. Information from the Swedish Forest Inventory database and other databases were used to derive texture and other important information for the sites, e.g. climate, deposition and vegetation data. The calculated weathering rates show a regional pattern that indicates possibilities for interpolation of data in large parts of Sweden. Geostatistical analysis of an area in southern Sweden shows different properties for different base cations. Kriging was performed for potassium to demonstrate the method. It was concluded that different base cations and different regions have to be analysed separately, in order to optimise the kriging method.  相似文献

Land use at contaminated sites, following remediation, is often needed for regional redevelopment. However, there exist few methods of developing economically and socially feasible land-use plans based on regional needs because of the wide variety of land-use requirements. This study proposes a new needs analysis method for the conceptual land-use planning of contaminated sites and illustrates this method with a case study of an illegal dumping site for hazardous waste. In this method, planning factors consisting of the land-use attributes and related facilities are extracted from the potential needs of the residents through a preliminary questionnaire. Using the extracted attributes of land use and the related facilities, land-use cases are designed for selection-based conjoint analysis. A second questionnaire for respondents to the first one who indicated an interest in participating in the second questionnaire is conducted for the conjoint analysis to determine the utility function and marginal cost of each attribute in order to prioritize the planning factors to develop a quantitative and economically and socially feasible land-use plan. Based on the results, site-specific land-use alternatives are developed and evaluated by the utility function obtained from the conjoint analysis. In this case study of an illegal dumping site for hazardous waste, the uses preferred as part of a conceptual land-use plan following remediation of the site were (1) agricultural land and a biogas plant designed to recover energy from biomass or (2) a park with a welfare facility and an athletic field. Our needs analysis method with conjoint analysis is applicable to the development of conceptual land-use planning for similar sites following remediation, particularly when added value is considered.  相似文献
