The European Union has set limit values for PM10 to be met in 2005. At Marylebone Road, London, where the traffic is heavy, the daily limit value of 50 μg m−3 is exceeded more than 35 times a year. A total of 185 days with daily PM10 concentrations exceeding the limit value of 50 μg m−3 measured between January 2002 and December 2004 (data capture of 89.5%) are discussed in this paper. These exceedences were more frequent in early spring and in autumn. Concentrations have been disaggregated into regional, urban (background) and local (street) contributions. Most of the episodes of gravimetric PM10 above the limit value were associated with a high regional background and very often the regional contribution dominated the PM10 mass. The secondary aerosol (especially the particulate nitrate) made a major contribution to the PM10 load. These situations were frequently observed when air masses came from the European mainland (showing that both emissions from the UK and other EU countries contributed to the exceedences), and less frequently with maritime air masses that have stagnated over the UK (showing that emissions from the UK alone less frequently contributed to the high regional background). However, the higher frequency of episodes breaching the limit value at the roadside site than at the rural site and the higher frequency of PM10 concentrations above the limit value on weekdays show that the high regional contributions are additional to local and urban emissions. Local emissions mainly due to traffic were the second important contributor to the exceedences, while the contribution of the urban background of London was less important than the local emissions and the regional background. Applying the pragmatic mass closure model of Harrison et al. [2003. A pragmatic mass closure model for airborne particulate matter at urban background and roadside sites. Atmospheric Environment 37, 4927–4933], revealed that the regional aerosol is comprised very largely of ammonium nitrate and sulphate and secondary organic aerosol. Findings suggest that international abatement of secondary aerosol precursors may be the most effective measure to fulfil the requirements of the European Directive 1999/30/CE by lowering the regional background.  相似文献

Twenty-one samples were collected during the dry season (26 January–28 February 2004) at 12 sites in and around Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and analyzed for particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter <10 μm (PM10) mass and composition. Teflon-membrane filters were analyzed for PM10 mass and concentrations of 40 elements. Quartz-fiber filters were analyzed for chloride, sulfate, nitrate, and ammonium ions as well as elemental carbon (EC) and organic carbon (OC) content. Measured 24-h PM10 mass concentrations were <100 and 40 μg m−3 at urban and suburban sites, respectively. PM10 lead concentrations were <0.1 μg m−3 for all samples collected, an important finding because the government of Ethiopia had stopped the distribution of leaded gasoline a few months prior to this study. Mass concentrations reconstructed from chemical composition indicated that 34–66% of the PM10 mass was due to geologically derived material, probably owing to the widespread presence of unpaved roads and road shoulders. At urban sites, EC and OC compounds contributed between 31% and 60% of the measured PM10 while at suburban sites carbon compounds contributed between 24% and 26%. Secondary sulfate aerosols were responsible for <10% of the reconstructed mass in urban areas but as much as 15% in suburban sites, where PM10 mass concentrations were lower. Non-volatile particulate nitrate, a lower limit for atmospheric nitrate, constituted <5% and 7% of PM10 at the urban and suburban sites, respectively. At seven of the 12 sites, real-time PM10 mass, real-time carbon monoxide (CO), and instantaneous ozone (O3) concentrations were measured with portable nephelometers, electrochemical analyzers, and indicator test sticks, respectively. Both PM10 and CO concentrations exhibited daily maxima around 7:00 and secondary peaks in the late afternoon and evening, suggesting that those pollutants were emitted during periods associated with motor-vehicle traffic, food preparation, and heating of homes. The morning concentration maxima were likely accentuated by stable atmospheric conditions associated with overnight surface temperature inversions. Ozone concentrations were measured near mid-day on filter sample collection days and were in all cases <45 parts per billion.  相似文献

Long-term study of air pollution plays a decisive role in formulating and refining pollution control strategies. In this study, two 12-month measurements of PM2.5 mass and speciation were conducted in 00/01 and 04/05 to determine long-term trend and spatial variations of PM2.5 mass and chemical composition in Hong Kong. This study covered three sites with different land-use characteristics, namely roadside, urban, and rural environments. The highest annual average PM2.5 concentration was observed at the roadside site (58.0±2.0 μg m−3 (average±2σ) in 00/01 and 53.0±2.7 μg m−3 in 04/05), followed by the urban site (33.9±2.5 μg m−3 in 00/01 and 39.0±2.0 μg m−3 in 04/05), and the rural site (23.7±1.9 μg m−3 in 00/01 and 28.4±2.4 μg m−3 in 04/05). The lowest PM2.5 level measured at the rural site was still higher than the United States’ annual average National Ambient Air Quality Standard of 15 μg m−3. As expected, seasonal variations of PM2.5 mass concentration at the three sites were similar: higher in autumn/winter and lower in summer. Comparing PM2.5 data in 04/05 with those collected in 00/01, a reduction in PM2.5 mass concentration at the roadside (8.7%) but an increase at the urban (15%) and rural (20%) sites were observed. The reduction of PM2.5 at the roadside was attributed to the decrease of carbonaceous aerosols (organic carbon and elemental carbon) (>30%), indicating the effective control of motor vehicle emissions over the period. On the other hand, the sulfate concentration at the three sites was consistent regardless of different land-use characteristics in both studies. The lack of spatial variation of sulfate concentrations in PM2.5 implied its origin of regional contribution. Moreover, over 36% growth in sulfate concentration was found from 00/01 to 04/05, suggesting a significant increase in regional sulfate pollution over the years. More quantitative techniques such as receptor models and chemical transport models are required to assess the temporal variations of source contributions to ambient PM2.5 mass and chemical speciation in Hong Kong.  相似文献

An analysis is presented of continuous simultaneous measurement data for PM10 and PM2.5 using TEOM instruments from five sites in the United Kingdom. The results are analysed specifically in relation to the sources and processes influencing the coarse particle fraction (2.5–10 μm). The data show a generally strong correlation between fine and coarse particle concentrations at all sites, with a generally higher proportion of coarse particles in the dryer months of the year. The one rural site shows a notably lower proportion of coarse particles than the urban and suburban sites. Whilst it is possible to disaggregate the coarse particle concentrations into a component which is diluted by increasing windspeed and a component which increases with windspeed and is hence possibly attributable to wind-induced resuspension processes, the latter is only a minor proportion of the total coarse particle concentration. There are appreciable weekday-to-weekend and day-to-night differences between coarse particle concentrations which are most marked at the urban sites indicative of anthropogenic activities being a source of coarse particles. The clearest indication of the likely predominant source of coarse particles arises from an analysis of a data set derived from an urban street canyon site after subtraction of measurements from a nearby urban background location. The data indicate strong relationships of both fine and coarse incremental particle concentrations in the street canyon with incremental NOx. If incremental fine particles and coarse particles are attributed to exhaust emissions and vehicle-induced resuspension, respectively, then it may be concluded that vehicle-induced resuspension provides a source strength approximately equal to that of exhaust emissions. An analysis of the coarse particle concentration data suggest that episodes of elevated coarse particle concentrations alone very rarely lead to exceedence of the UK air quality standard for PM10 of 50 μg m−3 measured as a 24-h running mean.  相似文献

Biomass burning is one of many sources of particulate pollution in Southeast Asia, but its irregular spatial and temporal patterns mean that large episodes can cause acute air quality problems in urban areas. Fires in Sumatra and Borneo during September and October 2006 contributed to 24-h mean PM10 concentrations above 150 μg m?3 at multiple locations in Singapore and Malaysia over several days. We use the FLAMBE model of biomass burning emissions and the NAAPS model of aerosol transport and evolution to simulate these events, and compare our simulation results to 24-h average PM10 measurements from 54 stations in Singapore and Malaysia. The model simulation, including the FLAMBE smoke source as well as dust, sulfate, and sea salt aerosol species, was able to explain 50% or more of the variance in 24-h PM10 observations at 29 of 54 sites. Simulation results indicated that biomass burning smoke contributed to nearly all of the extreme PM10 observations during September–November 2006, but the exact contribution of smoke was unclear because the model severely underestimated total smoke emissions. Using regression analysis at each site, the bias in the smoke aerosol flux was determined to be a factor of between 2.5 and 10, and an overall factor of 3.5 was estimated. After application of this factor, the simulated smoke aerosol concentration averaged 20% of observed PM10, and 40% of PM10 for days with 24-h average concentrations above 150 μg m?3. These results suggest that aerosol transport models can aid analysis of severe pollution events in Southeast Asia, but that improvements are needed in models of biomass burning smoke emissions.  相似文献

This paper examines the inter-suburb dispersion of particulate air pollution in Christchurch, New Zealand, during a wintertime particulate pollution episode. The dispersion is simulated using the RAMS/CALMET/CALPUFF modelling system, with data from a detailed emissions inventory of home heating, motor vehicles and industry. During the period 27 July–1 August 1995, peak 1 h and 24 h PM10 concentrations of 368 and 107 μg m−3, respectively, were observed. Peak concentrations occurred at night, when particulate emissions from wood- and coal-burning domestic heating appliances were at a maximum and emitted into a stable boundary layer. The model is generally able to reproduce the observed PM10 time series recorded at surface monitors located throughout the urban area. For this simulation, the fractional gross error ranges between 0.69 and 0.99, and the fractional bias ranges between −0.17 and 0.30. Strong horizontal concentration gradients of 100 μg m−3 km−1, both in the observational record and model predictions, are apparent. Three emission reduction options, designed to reduce the severity of particulate pollution episodes in Christchurch, are simulated. When both domestic open-hearth fires and all coal burning are removed, the 24 h average peak concentration is reduced by 55%. The number of guideline exceedences of PM10 in the modelled period is reduced from five to one. Removing open-hearth fires results in 42% reduction in PM10 concentration, resulting in three exceedences of the guideline, and removing coal-burning fires yields a 32% reduction in PM10, resulting in four exceedences of the guideline.  相似文献

The Spokane, Washington area is classified as a non-attainment area for the 24-h PM10 standard due to a history of high particulate matter concentrations. A Eulerian regional air quality model (CALMET/CALGRID) has been used to characterize the emission, transport and dispersion of PM10 and PM2.5 in Spokane. Observations from a residential site (Rockwood, RW) and an industrial site (Crown Zellerbach, CZ), spanning July 1994–August 1996 were used to evaluate the current emission inventory. Two major tasks were devised to conduct the objectives of this investigation. First, a simple and efficient urban dispersion model (WYNDValley) was used to simulate important episodes characterized by the highest PM10 and PM2.5 concentrations. The selected episodes included four days with wet conditions for which no roads would have been emitting and seven days with dry conditions for which roads would emit. In the second step, a single road-emitting event was selected from the previous predicted results for further analysis using the Eulerian regional air quality model to examine the emission inventory. The urban and regional models predicted the observed concentration distributions reasonably well for the source emissions inventoried in Spokane. The mass concentrations of PM10 were well predicted for the roads emitting case examined by both models indicating that the emission inventory based primarily upon area sources including roads is reasonably well characterized, at least at the RW site. The area sources around CZ are less well characterized, so that the PM10 concentrations are underpredicted at CZ. The models appear unable to reach an equilibrium mass balance status at the beginning of the simulation, and the urban model seems unable to properly resolve the nocturnal boundary layer.  相似文献

Between November 1995 and October 1996, particulate matter concentrations (PM10 and PM2.5) were measured in 25 study areas in six Central and Eastern European countries: Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Romania and Slovak Republic. To assess annual mean concentration levels, 24-h averaged concentrations were measured every sixth day on a fixed urban background site using Harvard impactors with a 2.5 and 10 μm cut-point. The concentration of the coarse fraction of PM10 (PM10−2.5) was calculated as the difference between the PM10 and the PM2.5 concentration. Spatial variation within study areas was assessed by additional sampling on one or two urban background sites within each study area for two periods of 1 month. QA/QC procedures were implemented to ensure comparability of results between study areas. A two to threefold concentration range was found between study areas, ranging from an annual mean of 41 to 98 μg m−3 for PM10, from 29 to 68 μg m−3 for PM2.5 and from 12 to 40 μg m−3 for PM10−2.5. The lowest concentrations were found in the Slovak Republic, the highest concentrations in Bulgaria and Poland. The variation in PM10 and PM2.5 concentrations between study areas was about 4 times greater than the spatial variation within study areas suggesting that measurements at a single sampling site sufficiently characterise the exposure of the population in the study areas. PM10 concentrations increased considerably during the heating season, ranging from an average increase of 18 μg m−3 in the Slovak Republic to 45 μg m−3 in Poland. The increase of PM10 was mainly driven by increases in PM2.5; PM10−2.5 concentrations changed only marginally or even decreased. Overall, the results indicate high levels of particulate air pollution in Central and Eastern Europe with large changes between seasons, likely caused by local heating.  相似文献

The number of ultrafine particles may be a more health relevant characteristic of ambient particulate matter than the conventionally measured mass. Epidemiological time series studies typically use a central site to characterize human exposure to outdoor air pollution. There is currently very limited information how well measurements at a central site reflect temporal and spatial variation across an urban area for particle number concentrations (PNC).The main objective of the study was to assess the spatial variation of PNC compared to the mass concentration of particles with diameter less than 10 or 2.5 μm (PM10 and PM2.5).Continuous measurements of PM10, PM2.5, PNC and soot concentrations were conducted at a central site during October 2002–March 2004 in four cities spread over Europe (Amsterdam, Athens, Birmingham and Helsinki). The same measurements were conducted directly outside 152 homes spread over the metropolitan areas. Each home was monitored during 1 week. We assessed the temporal correlation and the variability of absolute concentrations. For all particle indices, including particle number, temporal correlation of 24-h average concentrations was high. The median correlation for PNC per city ranged between 0.67 and 0.76. For PM2.5 median correlation ranged between 0.79 and 0.98. The median correlation for hourly average PNC was lower (range 0.56–0.66). Absolute concentration levels varied substantially more within cities for PNC and coarse particles than for PM2.5. Measurements at the central site reflected the temporal variation of 24-h average concentrations for all particle indices at the selected homes across the urban area. A central site could not assess absolute concentrations across the urban areas for particle number.  相似文献

Evaluation of health impacts arising from inhalation of pollutant particles <10 μm (PM10) is an active research area. However, lack of exposure data at high spatial resolution impedes identification of causal associations between exposure and illness. Biomagnetic monitoring of PM10 deposited on tree leaves may provide a means of obtaining exposure data at high spatial resolution. To calculate ambient PM10 concentrations from leaf magnetic values, the relationship between the magnetic signal and total PM10 mass must be quantified, and the exposure time (via magnetic deposition velocity (MVd) calculations) known. Birches display higher MVd (∼5 cm−1) than lime trees (∼2 cm−1). Leaf saturation remanence values reached ‘equilibrium’ with ambient PM10 concentrations after ∼6 ‘dry’ days (<3 mm/day rainfall). Other co-located species displayed within-species consistency in MVd; robust inter-calibration can thus be achieved, enabling magnetic PM10 biomonitoring at unprecedented spatial resolution.  相似文献

A modelling method has been developed to map PM10 and PM2.5 concentrations across the UK at background and roadside locations. Separate models have been calibrated using gravimetric measurements and Tapered Element Oscillating Microbalance instruments (TEOM) using source apportionments appropriate to the size fractions and sampling methods. Maps have been prepared for a base year of 2004 and predictions have been calculated for 2010 and 2020 on the basis of current policies. Comparisons of the modelling results with air quality regulations suggest that exceedences of the EU Daughter Directive stage 1 24-h limit value for PM10 at the roadside in 2004 will be largely eliminated by 2020. The concentration cap of 25 μg m−3 for PM2.5 proposed within the CAFÉ Directive is expected to be met at all locations. Projections for 2010 and 2020 suggest that the proposed exposure reduction (ER) target is likely to be considerably more stringent and require additional measures beyond current policies. Thus the model results suggest that the balance between the stringency of the concentration cap and the ER target in the proposed directive is appropriate. Measures to achieve greater reductions should therefore have the maximum public health benefit and air quality policy is not driven by the need to reduce concentrations at isolated ‘hotspots’.  相似文献

In this study the frequencies of PM10 (as key urban pollutant) in 14 key environmental protection cities in northern China were analyzed. It follows that the PM10 concentration in the high-frequency period is higher with an extent 0.009–0.066 mg m−3 than in the low-frequency period of 2001–2002. Further the impacts of three kinds of dust events on the PM10 concentration in four cities (Beijing, Hohhot, Xi’an and Lanzhou) were explored. The results showed that different kinds of dust events have different influences on variation of PM10 concentration in these four cities. In Lanzhou and Hohhot, which are near the source areas of dust events, the contribution degree of these three dust events to the PM10 is: floating dust>dust storm>blowing dust. Whereas, in Beijing and Xi’an situated in dust event passing areas, the mean value of PM10 concentration is higher in blowing dust than in floating dust (no dust storm). In addition, the influences of dust events on PM10 concentration are different in the cities on different dust event paths. In Beijing and Hohhot (on the northern path), the high PM10 concentration is usually caused by blowing dust. But in both Lanzhou and Xi’an (on the western/northwestern path) the high PM10 pollution concentration is usually caused by floating dust.  相似文献

To identify major PM2.5 (particulate matter ≤2.5 μm in aerodynamic diameter) sources with a particular emphasis on the ship engine emissions from a major port, integrated 24 h PM2.5 speciation data collected between 2000 and 2005 at five United State Environmental Protection Agency's Speciation Trends Network monitoring sites in Seattle, WA were analyzed. Seven to ten PM2.5 sources were identified through the application of positive matrix factorization (PMF). Secondary particles (12–26% for secondary nitrate; 17–20% for secondary sulfate) and gasoline vehicle emissions (13–31%) made the largest contributions to the PM2.5 mass concentrations at all of the monitoring sites except for the residential Lake Forest site, where wood smoke contributed the most PM2.5 mass (31%). Other identified sources include diesel vehicle emissions, airborne soil, residual oil combustion, sea salt, aged sea salt, metal processing, and cement kiln. Residual oil combustion sources identified at multiple monitoring sites point clearly to the Port of Seattle suggesting ship emissions as the source of oil combustion particles. In addition, the relationship between sulfate concentrations and the oil combustion emissions indicated contributions of ship emissions to the local sulfate concentrations. The analysis of spatial variability of PM2.5 sources shows that the spatial distributions of several PM2.5 sources were heterogeneous within a given air shed.  相似文献

For over one year, the Environmental Protection Commission of Hillsborough County (EPCHC) in Tampa, Florida, operated two dichotomous sequential particulate matter air samplers collocated with a manual Federal Reference Method (FRM) air sampler at a waterfront site on Tampa Bay. The FRM was alternately configured as a PM2.5, then as a PM10 sampler. For the dichotomous sampler measurements, daily 24-h integrated PM2.5 and PM10–2.5 ambient air samples were collected at a total flow rate of 16.7 l min−1. A virtual impactor split the air into flow rates of 1.67 and 15.0 l min−1 onto PM10–2.5 and PM2.5 47-mm diameter PTFE® filters, respectively. Between the two dichotomous air samplers, the average concentration, relative bias and relative precision were 13.3 μg m−3, 0.02% and 5.2% for PM2.5 concentrations (n=282), and 12.3 μg m−3, 3.9% and 7.7% for PM10–2.5 concentrations (n=282). FRM measurements were alternate day 24-h integrated PM2.5 or PM10 ambient air samples collected onto 47-mm diameter PTFE® filters at a flow rate of 16.7 l min−1. Between a dichotomous and a PM2.5 FRM air sampler, the average concentration, relative bias and relative precision were 12.4 μg m−3, −5.6% and 8.2% (n=43); and between a dichotomous and a PM10 FRM air sampler, the average concentration, relative bias and relative precision were 25.7 μg m−3, −4.0% and 5.8% (n=102). The PM2.5 concentration measurement standard errors were 0.95, 0.79 and 1.02 μg m−3; for PM10 the standard errors were 1.06, 1.59, and 1.70 μg m−3 for two dichotomous and one FRM samplers, respectively, which indicate the dichotomous samplers have superior technical merit. These results reveal the potential for the dichotomous sequential air sampler to replace the combination of the PM2.5 and PM10 FRM air samplers, offering the capability of making simultaneous, self-consistent determinations of these particulate matter fractions in a routine ambient monitoring mode.  相似文献

Hourly average concentrations of PM10 and PM2.5 have been measured simultaneously at a site within Birmingham U.K. between October 1994 and October 1995. Comparison of PM10 and NOx data with two other sites in the same city shows comparable summer and winter mean concentrations and highly significant inter-site correlations for both hourly and daily mean data. Over a four-month period samples were also collected for chemical analysis of sulphate, nitrate, chloride, ammonium and elemental and organic carbon. Analysis of the data indicates a marked difference between summer and winter periods. In the winter months PM2.5 comprises about 80% of PM10 and is strongly correlated with NOx indicating the importance of road traffic as a source. In the summer months, coarse particles (PM10−PM2.5) account for almost 50% of PM10 and the influence of resuspended surface dusts and soils and of secondary particulate matter is evident. The chemical analysis data are also consistent with three sources dominating the PM10 composition: vehicle exhaust emissions, secondary ammonium salts and resuspended surface dusts. Coarse particles from resuspension showed a positive dependence on windspeed, whilst elemental carbon derived from road traffic exhibited a negative dependence.  相似文献

Statistically significant downward trends in measured UK annual mean PM10 concentrations have been observed at eight out of the nine urban background monitoring sites between the start of monitoring in 1992 or 1993 and 2000.Site-specific projections of the individual components of measured PM10 concentrations have been derived for the period 1992–2000 at three monitoring sites from receptor modelling results for 1999 monitoring data. Measured annual average PM10 concentrations declined to between 71% and 66% of the 1992 values during this period at the sites studied. The largest contributions to the decline in total PM10 are from secondary particles at London Bloomsbury (40%, 3.4 μg m−3, tapered element oscillating microbalance (TEOM)), stationary sources at Belfast Centre (53%, 4.6 μg m−3, TEOM) and roadside traffic emissions at Bury Roadside (49%, 5.0 μg m−3, TEOM). The good agreement between the projected total PM10 concentrations and measured values for the years 1992–2000 indicate that the combination of the receptor model and the site-specific projections provide a suitably robust method for predicting future PM10 concentrations and the quantification of the impact of possible future policy measures to reduce PM10 concentrations. The good agreement between the projections and measured concentration also provides a useful verification of the trends in emissions inventory estimates for the 1990s.Projections of estimated PM10 concentrations have also been calculated for the London Bloomsbury site for the period from 1970 to 1991. Annual mean concentrations are predicted to have been in the range from 30 to 35 μg m−3, TEOM from 1977 to 1991 but much higher at values between 39 and 46 μg m−3, TEOM in the early 1970s.  相似文献

An indoor air quality assessment was conducted on 100 homes of recent Mexican immigrants in Commerce City, Colorado, an urban industrial community north of Denver. Head of households were administered a family health survey, filled out an activity diary, and participated in a home inspection. Carbon monoxide (CO) and carbon dioxide (CO2) were measured for 24 h inside the main living area and outside of the homes. Harvard Impactors were used to collect 24-h samples of PM2.5 at the same locations for gravimetric analysis. Dust samples were collected by vacuuming carpeting and flooring at four locations within the home and analyzed by ELISA for seven allergens. Mean indoor and outdoor PM2.5 levels were 27.2 and 8.5 μg m−3, respectively. Indoor PM2.5 and CO2 were elevated in homes for which the number of hours with door/window open was zero compared to homes in which the number of hours was high (>15 h). Indoor PM2.5 levels did not correlate with outdoor levels and tended to increase with number of inhabitants, and results indicate that the source of indoor particles were occupants and their activities, excluding smoking and cooking. Mean indoor CO2 and CO levels were 1170 and 2.4 ppm, respectively. Carbon monoxide was higher than the 24-h National Ambient Air Quality Standard in 3 of the homes. The predominant allergens were cat (Fel d 1) and mouse (Mus m 1) allergens, found in 20 and 34 homes, respectively.  相似文献

The Detroit Exposure and Aerosol Research Study (DEARS) provided data to compare outdoor residential coarse particulate matter (PM10–2.5) concentrations in six different areas of Detroit with data from a central monitoring site. Daily and seasonal influences on the spatial distribution of PM10–2.5 during Summer 2006 and Winter 2007 were investigated using data collected with the newly developed coarse particle exposure monitor (CPEM). These data allowed the representativeness of the community monitoring site to be assessed for the greater Detroit metro area. Multiple CPEMs collocated with a dichotomous sampler determined the precision and accuracy of the CPEM PM10–2.5 and PM2.5 data.CPEM PM2.5 concentrations agreed well with the dichotomous sampler data. The slope was 0.97 and the R2 was 0.91. CPEM concentrations had an average 23% negative bias and R2 of 0.81. The directional nature of the CPEM sampling efficiency due to bluff body effects probably caused the negative CPEM concentration bias.PM10–2.5 was observed to vary spatially and temporally across Detroit, reflecting the seasonal impact of local sources. Summer PM10–2.5 was 5 μg m?3 higher in the two industrial areas near downtown than the average concentrations in other areas of Detroit. An area impacted by vehicular traffic had concentrations 8 μg m?3 higher than the average concentrations in other parts of Detroit in the winter due to the suspected suspension of road salt. PM10–2.5 Pearson Correlation Coefficients between monitoring locations varied from 0.03 to 0.76. All summer PM10–2.5 correlations were greater than 0.28 and statistically significant (p-value < 0.05). Winter PM10–2.5 correlations greater than 0.33 were statistically significant (p-value < 0.05). The PM10–2.5 correlations found to be insignificant were associated with the area impacted by mobile sources during the winter. The suspected suspension of road salt from the Southfield Freeway, combined with a very stable atmosphere, caused concentrations to be greater in this area compared to other areas of Detroit. These findings indicated that PM10–2.5, although correlated in some instances, varies sufficiently across a complex urban airshed that that a central monitoring site may not adequately represent the population's exposure to PM10–2.5.  相似文献

As one of China’s great metropolises, Taiyuan is affected by heavy chemical industry and manufacture of chemical products, and faces pollution from polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). Therefore, this study was conducted to determine the PCB concentrations in various environmental media in Taiyuan. We collected 15 soil samples, 34 respirable particulate matter (PM) samples (17 of PM2.5 and 17 of PM10) from urban areas of Taiyuan, and measured a total of 144 PCB congeners (including some coeluting PCB congeners). The total PCB concentrations were 51–4.7 × 103 pg g−1 in soil, 27–1.4 × 102 pg m−3 in PM2.5 and 16–1.9 × 102 pg m−3 in PM10. Of the PCB homologues, the dominant PCBs detected in the various media were all tri-CBs. Soil was relatively the most polluted media. Furthermore, principal-component analysis revealed that the major PCB source in Taiyuan may be associated with the main commercial PCB through long-range transmission. Toxic equivalency (TEQ) concentrations (based on ten dioxin-like PCBs) ranged from N.D. to 5.9 × 10−3 pg-WHO TEQ g−1 in soil, 2.0 × 10−4–3.4 × 10−3 pg-WHO TEQ m−3 and 1.0 × 10−4–1.2 × 10−3 pg-WHO TEQ m−3 in PM2.5 and PM10, respectively. In previous studies, PCBs were not a severe component of contaminant in Taiyuan; however, this study suggested there is a potential threat of human exposure to PCBs for residents of Taiyuan.  相似文献

During Winter 2004, a series of elevated PM2.5 events occurred in Logan, Utah, coinciding with strong winter inversions. This period resulted in 17 exceedances of the 24-h PM2.5 standard, and some of the highest PM2.5 mass loadings recorded in the United States, including 9 days of 24-h PM2.5 measurements over 100 μg m−3. During the 3-month period, we monitored the size and mass concentrations of airborne particles using an aerosol mass spectrometer. PM2.5 concentrations were dominated by the formation of ammonium nitrate, accounting for over 50% of the non-refractory aerosol matter throughout the study and 80% on the highest pollution days. Another 15–20% of the particulate matter was composed of organic carbon. The high particle concentration loadings in Utah's Cache Valley result from a combination of unfavorable meteorology dominated by a severe cold-temperature inversion, a mix of rural and urban emission sources, and a confined geographical area. As a rapidly growing formerly rural area, the Cache Valley is representative of future air pollution problems facing areas of the interior west undergoing rapid urbanization.  相似文献
