The present work compares the efficiency of homogenous Fenton and photo-Fenton processes in the presence of Fe(III)–EDDS complex under different experimental conditions. 4-tert-Butylphenol (4-t-BP), which is one of the endocrine disrupting chemicals, was used as a model pollutant to investigate the Fenton and photo-Fenton application. The efficiency of homogenous photo-Fenton process was significantly much higher than homogenous Fenton process, which is due to the rapid formation of Fe2+ under UV irradiation of the iron complex and the photochemical formation of HO? from the photolysis of the complex Fe(III)–EDDS. Through the degradation of 4-t-BP, the effect of Fe(III)–EDDS concentration, H2O2 concentration, pH, and oxygen was investigated in both processes. Such trend was also correlated with pH calculating the polychromatic Fe2+ quantum yield formation at pH 4.0, 6.0, and 8.6. The results showed that at high Fe(III)–EDDS and H2O2 concentrations, a negative effect was found. By the way, the Fenton process was found to be enhanced at basic pH. These results can be very useful for the use and optimization of such iron complex in water treatment process as function of different physico-chemical conditions.  相似文献

The kinetics of the degradation of seven nitrophenols (2-nitrophenol, 4-nitrophenol, 2,5-dinitrophenol, 2,6-dinitrophenol, 2,4-dinitrophenol, 2-methyl-4,6-dinitrophenol, 4-methyl-2,6-dinitrophenol) with the Fenton reagent, photo-Fenton, and hydrogen peroxide photolysis was investigated. The efficiency and operating costs for the studied treatments were evaluated and compared. The Fenton reagent was found to be the most efficient and the cheapest way for the nitrophenols (NPs) degradation. The formation of nitrate as a result of mineralisation of organically bounded nitrogen was observed during the treatment of NPs with studied treatment processes. The degrees of organically bounded nitrogen conversion to nitrate after 90% degradation of NPs with the Fenton, photo-Fenton and hydrogen peroxide photolysis were 51-67%, 85-90%, and 50-60%, respectively. According to Daphnia magna acute toxicity test, the Fenton treatment led to complete detoxification of NPs.  相似文献

Oxidation of TNT by photo-Fenton process   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Liou MJ  Lu MC  Chen JN 《Chemosphere》2004,57(9):1107-1114
A series of photo-Fenton reactions have been performed for the degradation of 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) in a 4.2-l reactor. The degradation reaction rate of TNT followed a pseudo-first-order behavior; and the rate constants for 2.4mW cm(-2)UV only, 2.4mW cm(-2)UV/H(2)O(2), Fenton, photo-Fenton (2.4mW cm(-2)) and photo-Fenton (4.7mW cm(-2)) were 0.002min(-1), 0.007min(-1), 0.014min(-1), 0.025min(-1) and 0.037min(-1), respectively. Increasing the intensity of UV light, and the concentrations of ferrous ions and hydrogen peroxide promoted the oxidation rate under the experimental conditions in this study. The weighting factor (f), the Fe(II)-promoted efficiency (r) and the promoted-UV light efficiency (p) were calculated to clarify their effects on the TNT oxidation. Moreover, the inhibition effect of hydroxyl radical was also observed in both Fenton and photo-Fenton oxidation when the concentration of Fe(II) were higher than 2.88mM. Solid phase micro-extraction was first applied to the separation of the organic byproducts from TNT oxidation. GC/MS was employed to identify the byproducts during the Fenton and photo-Fenton oxidation of TNT. These compounds were clarified as 1,3,5-trinitrobenzene, 1-methyl-2,4-dinitrobenzene 2,5-dinitrobenzoic acid and 1,3-dinitrobenzene. By these byproducts, the mechanisms of the methyl group oxidation, decarboxylation, aromatic ring breakage, and hydrolysis can be recognized and demonstrated. The pathway of TNT oxidation by photo-Fenton process was also proposed in this study.  相似文献

In the present study, selected advanced oxidation processes (AOPs)—namely, photo-Fenton (with Fe2+, Fe3+, and potassium ferrioxalate—FeOx—as iron sources), solar photo-Fenton, Fenton, and UV/H2O2—were investigated for degradation of the antineoplastic drug mitoxantrone (MTX), frequently used to treat metastatic breast cancer, skin cancer, and acute leukemia. The results showed that photo-Fenton processes employing Fe(III) and FeOx and the UV/H2O2 process were most efficient for mineralizing MTX, with 77, 82, and 90 % of total organic carbon removal, respectively. MTX probably forms a complex with Fe(III), as demonstrated by voltammetric and spectrophotometric measurements. Spectrophotometric titrations suggested that the complex has a 2:1 Fe3+:MTX stoichiometric ratio and a complexation constant (K) of 1.47 × 104 M–1, indicating high MTX affinity for Fe3+. Complexation partially inhibits the involvement of iron ions and hence the degradation of MTX during photo-Fenton. The UV/H2O2 process is usually slower than the photo-Fenton process, but, in this study, the UV/H2O2 process proved to be more efficient due to complexing of MTX with Fe(III). The drug exhibited no cytotoxicity against NIH/3T3 mouse embryonic fibroblast cells when oxidized by UV/H2O2 or by UV/H2O2/FeOx at the concentrations tested.  相似文献

The main disadvantage of using iron mineral in Fenton-like reactions is that the decomposition rate of organic contaminants is slower than in classic Fenton reaction using ferrous ions at acidic pH. In order to overcome these drawbacks of the Fenton process, chelating agents have been used in the investigation of Fenton heterogeneous reaction with some Fe-bearing minerals. In this work, the effect of new iron complexing agent, ethylenediamine-N,N'-disuccinic acid (EDDS), on heterogeneous Fenton and photo-Fenton system using goethite as an iron source was tested at circumneutral pH. Batch experiments including adsorption of EDDS and bisphenol A (BPA) on goethite, H2O2 decomposition, dissolved iron measurement, and BPA degradation were conducted. The effects of pH, H2O2 concentration, EDDS concentration, and goethite dose were studied, and the production of hydroxyl radical (?OH) was detected. The addition of EDDS inhibited the heterogeneous Fenton degradation of BPA but also the formation of ?OH. The presence of EDDS decreases the reactivity of goethite toward H2O2 because EDDS adsorbs strongly onto the goethite surface and alters catalytic sites. However, the addition of EDDS can improve the heterogeneous photo-Fenton degradation of BPA through the propagation into homogeneous reaction and formation of photochemically efficient Fe-EDDS complex. The overall effect of EDDS is dependent on the H2O2 and EDDS concentrations and pH value. The high performance observed at pH 6.2 could be explained by the ability of O 2 ?? to generate Fe(II) species from Fe(III) reduction. Low concentrations of H2O2 (0.1 mM) and EDDS (0.1 mM) were required as optimal conditions for complete BPA removal. These findings regarding the capability of EDDS/goethite system to promote heterogeneous photo-Fenton oxidation have important practical implications for water treatment technologies.  相似文献

The photodegradation of monuron (3-(4-chlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea) in aqueous solutions under simulated solar irradiation has been conducted by different advanced oxidation processes (UV/H(2)O(2), UV/H(2)O(2)/Fe(2+), UV/H(2)O(2)/TiO(2), UV/TiO(2), dark H(2)O(2)/Fe(3+)). The degradation rates were always higher for the homogeneous catalysis in photo-Fenton reactions (UV/H(2)O(2)/Fe(2+)) compared to the heterogeneous photocatalytic systems (TiO(2)/UV and UV/H(2)O(2)/TiO(2)). Optimal concentrations of Fe(2+) and H(2)O(2) for the abatement of the herbicide in the photo-Fenton system were found to be 1 mM Fe(II) and 10 mM H(2)O(2). Several intermediary products were identified using large volume injection micro-liquid chromatography with UV detection (mu-LC-UV), mu-LC-MS and GC-MS techniques and a degradation mechanism has been proposed.  相似文献

This work is first intended to optimize the experimental conditions for the maximum degradation of guaiacol (2-methoxyphenol) by Fenton’s reagent, and second, to improve the process efficiency through the use of solar radiation. Guaiacol is considered as a model compound of pulp and paper mill effluent. The experiments were carried out in a laboratory-scale reactor subjected or not to solar radiation. Hydrogen peroxide solution was continuously introduced into the reactor at a constant flow rate. The kinetics of organic matter decay was evaluated by means of the chemical oxygen demand (COD) and the absorbance measurements. The experimental results showed that the Fenton and solar photo-Fenton systems lead successfully to 90% elimination of COD and absorbance at 604 nm from a guaiacol solution under particular experimental conditions. The COD removal always obeyed a pseudo-first-order kinetics. The effect of pH, temperature, H2O2 dosing rate, initial concentration of Fe2+, and initial COD was investigated using the Fenton process. The solar photo-Fenton system needed less time and consequently less quantity of H2O2. Under the optimum experimental conditions, the solar photo-Fenton process needs a dose of H2O2 40% lower than that used in the Fenton process to remove 90% of COD.  相似文献

Photo-Fenton degradation of dichloromethane for gas phase treatment   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
A continuous photo-Fenton process has been used for the degradation of gaseous dichloromethane (DCM). By absorbing gaseous DCM into a reactive Fenton mixture, the scrubbing and degradation processes could be completed in the one reactor. Operating with a Dark Fenton solution did not result in removal of DCM any better than simply using MilliQ water. This was because the Fe(II) quickly converted to Fe(III) but was unable to regenerate. After a short time, the Fenton process was no longer operating and the DCM quickly accumulated in the reaction solution, preventing further accumulation due to a decreasing concentration gradient in the reactive solution. However, by using UV light and increasing the retention time from 20 to 50 s, there was sufficient time for the reactive solution to regenerate and continuous operation could achieve at least 65% removal of DCM from the gaseous phase at ambient temperature.  相似文献

In this paper, for the first time, faujasite Y zeolite impregnated with iron (III) was employed as a catalyst to remove a real cocktail of micropollutants inside real water samples from the Meurthe river by the means of the heterogeneous photo-Fenton process. The catalyst was prepared by the wet impregnation method using iron (III) nitrate nonahydrate as iron precursor. First, an optimization of the process parameters was conducted using phenol as model macro-pollutant. The hydrogen peroxide concentration, the light wavelength (UV and visible) and intensity, the iron loading immobilized, as well as the pH of the solution were investigated. Complete photo-Fenton degradation of the contaminant was achieved using faujasite containing 20 wt.% of iron, under UV light, and in the presence of 0.007 mol/L of H2O2 at pH 5.5. In a second step, the optimized process was used with real water samples from the Meurthe river. Twenty-one micropollutants (endocrine disruptors, pharmaceuticals, personal care products, and perfluorinated compounds) including 17 pharmaceutical compounds were specifically targeted, detected, and quantified. All the initial concentrations remained in the range of nanogram per liter (0.8–88 ng/L). The majority of the micropollutants had a large affinity for the surface of the iron-impregnated faujasite. Our results emphasized the very good efficiency of the photo-Fenton process with a cocktail of a minimum of 21 micropollutants. Except for sulfamethoxazole and PFOA, the concentrations of all the other microcontaminants (bisphenol A, carbamazepine, carbamazepine-10,11-epoxide, clarithromycin, diclofenac, estrone, ibuprofen, ketoprofen, lidocaine, naproxen, PFOS, triclosan, etc.) became lower than the limit of quantification of the LC-MS/MS after 30 min or 6 h of photo-Fenton treatment depending on their initial concentrations. The photo-Fenton degradation of PFOA can be neglected. The photo-Fenton degradation of sulfamethoxazole obeys first-order kinetics in the presence of the cocktail of the other micropollutants.  相似文献

Titanium dioxide photocatalysis (using 20 0mg l(-1) of TiO2), under aerobic and anaerobic conditions, and photo-Fenton (2 and 56 mg l(-1) iron) were applied to the treatment of different NBCS (non-biodegradable chlorinated solvents), such as dichloroethane, dichloromethane and trichloromethane dissolved in water at 50 mg l(-1). All the tests were performed in a 35-l solar pilot plant with compound parabolic collectors (CPCs) under natural illumination. The two solar treatments were compared with attention to chloride release and TOC mineralisation, as the main parameters. Photo-Fenton was found to be the more appropriate treatment for these compounds, assuming volatilisation as a drawback of photocatalytic degradation of NBCS dissolved in water. In this context, several operating parameters related to NBCS degradation, e.g., treatment time, temperature, hydrogen peroxide consumption and volatility of parent compounds are discussed. The correct choice of operating conditions can very often diminish the problem of volatilisation during treatment.  相似文献

Extracts of copoazu (Theobroma gramdiflorum), canangucha (Maurita Flexuosa), and coffee (Coffea arabica) were explored as enhancers of the solar photo-Fenton process to eliminate acetaminophen, sulfamethoxazole, carbamazepine, and diclofenac in raw municipal wastewater. The process, at pH 6.2 and 5 mg L?1 of iron without the presence of extracts, had a very limited action (~35% of the pollutants degradation at 90 min of treatment) due to the iron precipitation. Interestingly, the extract addition increased the soluble iron forms, but only copoazu extract improved the pollutant degradation (~95% of elimination at 20 min of the process action). The copoazu extract components acted as natural complexing agents, maintaining the soluble iron up to 2 mg L?1 even after 90 min and, consequently, enhancing the pollutant degradation. The effect of copoazu extract dose on the process performance was also assessed, finding that an iron:polyphenols (from the copoazu extract) at a molar ratio equal to 1:0.16 was the most favorable condition. Then, the process improved by copoazu extract was applied to raw municipal wastewater. Remarkably, the process led to ~90% of total pharmaceuticals degradation at 20 min of treatment. This work evidenced the feasibility of amazonian fruit extracts to improve the solar photo-Fenton process to degrade pharmaceuticals in aqueous matrices at near-neutral pH.

Several phenol derivatives were evaluated regarding their capacities for Fe(3+) and Cu(2+) reduction. Selected compounds were assayed in Fenton-like reactions to degrade Azure B. 3,4-Dihydroxyphenylacetic, 2,5-dihydroxyterephtalic, gallic, chromotropic and 3-hydroxyanthranilic acids were the most efficient reducers of both metallic ions. The reaction system composed of 3-hydroxyanthranilic acid/Fe(3+)/H(2)O(2) was able to degrade Azure B at higher levels than the conventional Fenton reaction (87% and 75% of decolorization after 20min reaction, respectively). Gallic and syringic acids, catechol and vanillin induced Azure B degradations at lower levels as compared with conventional Fenton reaction. Azure B was not degraded in the presence of 10% (v/v) methanol or ethanol, which are OH radical scavengers, confirming the participation of this radical in the degradation reactions. Iron-containing reactions consumed substantially more H(2)O(2) than reactions containing copper. In iron-containing reactions, even the systems that caused a limited degradation of the dye consumed high concentrations of H(2)O(2). On the other hand, the reactions containing Fe(3+), H(2)O(2) and 3-hydroxyanthranilic acid or 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid were the most efficient on degradation of Azure B and also presented the highest H(2)O(2) consumption. These results indicate that H(2)O(2) consumption occurs even when the dye is not extensively degraded, suggesting that part of the generated OH radicals reacts with the own phenol derivative instead of Azure B.  相似文献

Although homogeneous photo-Fenton system is a very efficient method for organic wastewater treatment, it suffers from costly pH adjustment as well as difficult separation of catalysts from aqueous in practical application. Through cation exchange reaction, hydroxyl-Fe-pillared bentonite (H-Fe-P-B) was successfully prepared as a solid catalyst for UV-Fenton to degrade non-biodegradable azo-dye Orange II. Compared with raw bentonite, the content of iron, interlamellar distance and external surface area of H-Fe-P-B increased remarkably. H-Fe-P-B had good photosensitivity and catalyst reactivity. And the catalytic activity of H-Fe-P-B for H(2)O(2) came from hydroxyl-Fe between sheets rather than Fe(3+) or Fe(2+) in tetrahedral or octahedral sheets of bentonite. In UVA-H(2)O(2) system, H(2)O(2) could destroy the azo bond of excited Orange II molecules but could not effectively mineralize it. After 120 min treatment, 83% discoloration was obtained while only 2% of TOC was removed. When H-Fe-P-B was used as catalyst, a significant degradation of Orange II was observed at the same condition as UVA-H(2)O(2) system. Almost 100% discoloration and more than 60% TOC removal of Orange II could be achieved after 120 min treatment. Because of the strong surface acidity and the electronegativity of H-Fe-P-B, the pH range of this catalyst in the Orange II discoloration could be extended up to 9.5. And this catalyst showed good stability during Orange II degradation in water in wide range of pH (3.0-9.5). These results indicated that the H-Fe-P-B was a promising catalyst for UV-Fenton system.  相似文献

The treatment of an effluent from the production of trifluraline was studied using a 1-L, semi-batch, tank-stirred glass reactor for performing three different advanced oxidation processes (photoperoxidation, Fenton, photo-Fenton). A commercial, medium-pressure mercury lamp was used for sample irradiation. The degradation was monitored by measurements of absorptiometric color reduction, UV-visible absorption spectra, and chemical oxygen demand (COD). The obtained results showed that the photo-Fenton process was the most effective treatment for the trifluraline effluent.  相似文献

INTENTION, GOAL, SCOPE, BACKGROUND: Since the intermediate products of some compounds can be more toxic and/or refractory than the original compund itself, the development of innovative oxidation technologies which are capable of transforming such compounds into harmless end products, is gaining more importance every day. Advanced oxidation processes are one of these technologies. However, it is necessary to optimize the reaction conditions for these technologies in order to be cost-effective. OBJECTIVE: The main objectives of this study were to see if complete mineralization of 4-chlorophenol with AOPs was possible using low pressure mercury vapour lamps, to make a comparison of different AOPs, to observe the effect of the existence of other ions on degradation efficiency and to optimize reaction conditions. METHODS: In this study, photochemical advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) utilizing the combinations of UV, UV/H2O2 and UV/H2O2/Fe2+ (photo-Fenton process) were investigated in labscale experiments for the degradation and mineralization of 4-chlorophenol. Evaluations were based on the reduction of 4-chlorophenol and total organic carbon. The major parameters investigated were the initial 4-chlorophenol concentration, pH, hydrogen peroxide and iron doses and the effect of the presence of radical scavengers. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: It was observed that the 4-chlorophenol degradation efficiency decreased with increasing concentration and was independent of the initial solution pH in the UV process. 4-chlorophenol oxidation efficiency for an initial concentration of 100 mgl(-1) was around 89% after 300 min of irradiation in the UV process and no mineralization was achieved. The efficiency increased to > 99% with the UV/H2O2 process in 60 min of irradiation, although mineralization efficiency was still around 75% after 300 min of reaction time. Although the H2O2/4-CP molar ratio was kept constant, increasing initial 4-chlorophenol concentration decreased the treatment efficiency. It was observed that basic pHs were favourable in the UV/H2O2 process. The results showed that the photo-Fenton process was the most effective treatment process under acidic conditions. Complete disappearance of 100 mgl(-1) of 4-chlorophenol was achieved in 2.5 min and almost complete mineralization (96%) was also possible after only 45 min of irradiation. The efficiency was negatively affected from H2O2 in the UV/H2O2 process and Fe2+ in the photo-Fenton process over a certain concentration. The highest negative effect was observed with solutions containing PO4 triple ions. Required reaction times for complete disappearance of 100 mgl(-1) 4-chlorophenol increased from 2.5 min for an ion-free solution to 30 min for solutions containing 100 mgl(-1) PO4 triple ion and from 45 min to more than 240 min for complete mineralization. The photodegradation of 4-chlorophenol was found to follow the first-order law. CONCLUSION: The results of this study showed that UV irradiation alone can degrade 4-CP, although at very slow rates, but cannot mineralize the compound. The addition of hydrogen peroxide to the system, the so-called UV/H2O2 process, significantly enhances the 4-CP degradation rate, but still requires relatively long reaction periods for complete mineralization. The photo-Fenton process, the combination of homogeneous systems of UV/H2O2/Fe2+ compounds, produces the highest photochemical elimination rate of 4-CP and complete mineralization is possible to achieve in quite shorter reaction periods when compared with the UV/H2O2 process. RECOMMENDATIONS AND OUTLOOK: It is more cost effective to use these processes for only purposes such as toxicity reduction, enhancement of biodegradability, decolorization and micropollutant removal. However the most important point is the optimization of the reaction conditions for the process of concern. In such a case, AOPs can be used in combination with a biological treatment systems as a pre- or post treatment unit providing the cheapest treatment option. The AOP applied, for instance, can be used for toxicity reduction and the biological unit for chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal.  相似文献

Dynamic behaviors of hydroxyl (OH) radical generation and consumption in photo-Fenton oxidation process were investigated by measuring OH radical concentration during the discoloration of azo-dye Orange II. The effects of operating parameters for photo-Fenton discoloration, i.e. dosages of H2O2 and Fe, initial dye concentration, solution pH and UV irradiation, on the generation and consumption of OH radicals playing the main role in advanced oxidation processes were extensively studied. The scavenger probe or trapping technique in which coumarin is scavenger of OH radical was applied to estimate OH radical concentration in the photoreactor during the photo-Fenton discoloration process. The OH radical generation was enhanced with increasing the dosages of Fenton regents, H2O2 and Fe. At the initial stage of photo-Fenton discoloration of Orange II, the OH radical concentration rapidly increased (Phase-I) and the OH radical concentration decreased after reaching of OH radical concentration at maximum value (Phase-II). The decrease in OH radical concentration started when the complete discoloration of Orange II was nearly achieved and the H2O2 concentration became rather low. The dynamic behavior of OH radical concentration during the discoloration of Orange II was found to be strongly linked with the change in H2O2 concentration. The generation of OH radical was maximum at solution pH of 3.0 and decreased with an increase of solution pH. The OH radical generation rate in the Fenton Process was rather slower than that in the photo-Fenton process.  相似文献

Fe-C-TiO(2) photocatalysts which contained the residue carbon (0.2-3.3 mass%) were prepared from a mixture of TiO(2) and FeC(2)O(4) through the heating at 673-1173 K in Ar. These photocatalysts did not show a high adsorption of phenol, but they were active in photo-Fenton reactions during decomposition of phenol under UV irradiation with addition of H(2)O(2). It was proved that Fe(2+) governed the photoactivity of Fe-C-TiO(2) photocatalysts, it decreased with heat-treatment temperature above 773 K. For comparison, Fe-TiO(2) photocatalyst was prepared by heating TiO(2) and FeC(2)O(4) at 823 K in air for 3h. Phenol decomposition was going much slower on Fe-TiO(2) photocatalyst in comparison with Fe-C-TiO(2), of which mechanism was different, on the former phenol was decomposed by the radical reaction, on the latter through a complex reaction with iron and intermediates of phenol decomposition. Therefore carbon-coating TiO(2) was found to be advantageous for mounting iron and its application for the phenol decomposition via photo-Fenton process.  相似文献

2,3,7,8-Tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (2,3,7,8-TeCDD) was rapidly decreased by sonication in aqueous solution. The degradation efficiency was strongly influenced by ultrasonic power and reaction temperature. An initial 2,3,7,8-TeCDD concentration of 20 ng l(-1) was completely degraded within 60 min under sonochemical conditions using a 20 kHz frequency with a 150 W ultrasound power. The activation energy is 21.9 kJ/mol in the temperature range of 10-40 degrees C, suggesting a diffusion-controlled reaction. To increase the efficiency of 2,3,7,8-TeCDD treatment, degradation system combined ultrasound with Fe(III) (2 x 10(-4)mol l(-1)) and UV irradiation. Both UV and Fe(III) induced Fenton, Fenton-like and photo-Fenton reactions, leading to additional OH radicals and rapid 2,3,7,8-TeCDD removal.  相似文献
