Spatio-temporal variations in megabenthos abundance in three different habitats of the Catalan deep-sea (Western Mediterranean) 总被引:1,自引:1,他引:1
The spatio-temporal variations in the megafauna (fishes, crustaceans, and other invertebrates) in three different habitats on the slope in the Western Mediterranean (Catalan coast off Barcelona) have been investigated. Samples were collected at two fixed stations during 1991 and 1992, one inside and one outside a submarine canyon (at depths between 450 and 600 m) and additional samples were collected at another station on the lower slope (at a depth of 1200 m) in each season of the year. Three replicates of each sample were taken at each station. Differences observed between habitats, seasons, and zoological groupings were verified statistically by factorial ANOVA. The habitat appeared to be the main factor responsible for the differences observed in biomass and abundance values for the zoological groupings considered. Decapod crustacean biomass was higher in the submarine canyon than in neighbouring zones, and smaller species and juveniles were more abundant inside the canyon in the case of both fishes and crustaceans. Fish biomass was most abundant in the lower slope. Seasonality was also a factor, although to a lesser extent. Seasonal variations in biomass, especially fish biomass, were recorded in the deepest zone (1200 m). Crustaceans displayed lower sensitivity to seasonal factors, whereas other invertebrates did not, on the whole, exhibit seasonal variations. 相似文献

This paper examines spatial differences in the distribution of by-catch assemblages from the scallop [Pecten maximus (L.) and Aequipecten opercularis (L.)] fishing grounds in the North Irish Sea, during 1995. The sites examined have been exposed to differing known levels
of fishing disturbance by scallop dredging, based on unusually high-resolution data extracted from fishermens' logbooks. Uni-
and multi-variate techniques have been used on a production dataset (a value which incorporates both abundance and biomass
figures), as well as abundance and biomass data individually. The original species list was reduced to higher taxonomic groupings
in line with the theory that the latter is more appropriate for detecting anthropogenic change. Species diversity and richness,
total number of species, and total number of individuals all decrease significantly with increasing fishing effort. Species
dominance increases with effort. Total abundance, biomass and production, and the production of most of the major individual
taxa investigated decrease significantly with increasing effort. Multivariate analysis reveals a significant relationship
between fishing effort and by-catch assemblage structure. The taxa most responsible for the differences are the echinoids
and cnidarians, but prosobranch molluscs and crustaceans also contribute to the differences. By-catch assemblage structure
is more closely related to fishing effort than any other environmental parameter investigated, including depth and sediment
type. We observed an approximately linear decrease in diversity with increasing fishing disturbance, and suggest this is primarily
due to selective removal of sensitive species and, more importantly, habitat homogenisation. These results were interpreted
in the light of ecological theories relating disturbance to community structure. The argument that invertebrate scavenger
populations benefit from prolonged exposure to fishing disturbance was also examined, but no supporting evidence was found.

The Naaf River estuary is one of the large estuaries in the Bangladesh coastal region not to have been affected by extensive
human disturbance. This research provides information about the fisheries diversity status by Estuarine Set Bag Net (ESBN)
sampling relation to physicochemical variables in both spatio-temporal scales. About 25 km of the lower estuary was divided
into six zones for sample collection by considering the accessibility and availability of the ESBN operation, fish landing
centers and location of the fishing villages. In total 48 samples have been analyzed which were taken throughout March to
October 2006. To quantify the species diversity, all fisheries data were analyzed by using EstimateS and EcoSim software which
accounts the different diversity indices viz., species richness, Shannon–Wiener diversity Index, Dominance and Evenness index.
The research results demonstrate that the Naaf River estuary is a habitat of 161 (species richness, Sobs = 161, Choa 1 = 162 ± 2.34,
ACE = 161.73) different species which belong to 98 fin fishes, 23 shrimps and prawns, 13 crabs, 11 molluscs, 3 echinoderms,
4 other crustaceans; while 9 remain unidentified. Results on the aquatic environment, mainly salinity and turbidity were found
to have a major influence on their occurrence and distribution. All the findings indicated that the Naaf River estuary is
a highly productive system and provides a favourable environment for large variety of estuarine species assemblages. 相似文献

The natural diet of Callinectes ornatus in Ubatuba Bay, Ubatuba (SP), Brazil, was studied. Influence of season, sex, size and molt stage variation in the diet were
also described. Specimens were collected monthly over a period of 1 year, in Ubatuba Bay, using a fishing boat equipped with
a double rigged net. The relative degree of stomach fullness, frequency of occurrence, and quantitative scoring (percentage)
were determined. Digested material, crustaceans, sediment and mollusks were the principal items of the diet. Echinoderms,
annelids, plants, and fishes were also notable prey items, and other food categories (foraminiferans, cnidarians, worms and
bryozoans) occurred in low percentages. A non-significant difference was found in many items during seasonal analysis, i.e.
plants, foraminiferans, cnidarians, bryozoans and digested material were present at highest percentages during summer and
autumn, while crustaceans and echinoderms were consumed in larger amounts during the spring and winter. Males and females
consumed a similar diet, although ovigerous females showed a greater tendency to feed on items with soft tissues (fish, squid,
shrimp). Juveniles fed more on sedentary and calcareous items than did adults, showing a significant tendency to reduce consumption
of foraminiferans, annelids, bryozoans, echinoderms and sediment as the animal increased in size, accompanied by an elevation
in the consumption of plants, crustaceans and fish. These crabs are opportunistic predators with a preference for crustaceans
and mollusks that is correlated with the availability of prey and the ontogenetic phase of the predator.

Seasonal sampling was carried out based on day/night, vertically stratified tows (100 or 125 m strata) in the upper 900 m
of the water column over the mid-slope commercial fishing grounds south of Tasmania. A large midwater trawl (105 m2 mouth area) was used with an opening/closing cod-end. Subtropical convergence and subtropical species dominated the fauna,
but many less abundant, more widely-distributed species were also present. Fishes, which contributed 89% of micronekton biomass
and 135 of 178 species, were dominated by the Myctophidae (48% biomass and 48 species). Twenty micronekton species made up
80% of the total biomass. Overall, the micronekton fish biomass in this region was 2.2 g m−2 wet weight. A pronounced day/night shift in the distribution of biomass was attributable to diel migratory species. During
the day, <0.2% of the total micronekton biomass was found in 0 to 300 m; most biomass was below 400 m, with peaks at 400 to
525 m and 775 to 900 m. At night, 53% of the biomass was found in 0 to 300 m, with progressively less in each deeper stratum.
The vertical ranges of individual species typically exceeded 400 to 500 m during the day and night and were non-coincident,
although nyctoepipelagic migrators were concentrated in the surface 200 m at night. Distinct epipelagic, lower and upper mesopelagic
assemblages were identified, and patterns of epipelagic migration, limited migration and non-migration were categorised for
species from each of the lower and upper mesopelagic assemblages. The vertical distribution of these assemblages was coincident
with the primary water masses: subantarctic mode water (∼250 to 600 m) and antarctic intermediate water (below ∼700 m). The
flux of migrating micronekton, estimated at 0.94 to 3.36 g C m−2 yr−1 to the lower mesopelagic and 1.14 to 4.06 g C m−2 yr−1 to the upper mesopelagic, appeared to be considerably outweighed by the consumption needs of aggregated mid-slope benthopelagic
predators. We suggest that advection of mesopelagic prey in antarctic intermediate water may sustain aggregated populations
of orange roughy (Hoplostethus atlanticus) and other predators on the micronekton in mid-slope depths at this site.

This study examines the feeding habits of Paromola cuvieri (Risso, 1816) and Geryon longipes A. Milne Edwards, 1881, the only two common deep-sea brachyuran crabs inhabiting the bathyal mud assemblages in the Catalan Sea (Western Mediterranean). Samples were obtained by bottom trawls at depths between 360 and 1871 m during 1983 to 1992. Both species had highly diverse diets, but very low feeding activity, as reflected by the high proportion of empty stomachs. Both characteristics may be important factors enabling deepsea crabs to adapt to bathyal zones, where trophic resources are scarce. The most important food items found in P. cuvieri were fish remains (teleost, sharks) and benthic decapods (Monodaeus couchii, Munida tenuimana). Scavenging activity plays an important role in this species. The diet of G. longipes included a broad range of benthic invertebrates. In the upper middle slope, the bivalve Abra longicallus, decapods (Calocaris macandreae and Monodaeus couchii), echinoderms and polychaetes were the dominant prey, with epibenthic peracarids as a secondary resource. On the lower middle slope, the incidence of decapod crustaceans (C. macandreae, Pontiphilus norvegicus) and peracarids in the diet declined. Small macrobenthic prey (glycerids, cumaceans or amphipods) were rare in the diet of both species, in accordance with the large size of the crab specimens studied. The absence of preferred prey items and the lack of food items of an optimum size on the lower slope may contribute to the progressive decline in abundance of P. cuvieri and G. longipes with increasing depth. 相似文献

Structured sampling designs are important in the assessment of environmental impacts of variable ecological systems. Recent developments have provided a useful framework extending existing univariate techniques into a multivariate context. Measures of taxonomic relatedness have also been introduced, which complement existing measures of diversity of assemblages. In this study, the potential effects of sewage discharge on spatial patterns of highly diverse molluscan assemblages in a Mediterranean rocky subtidal habitat were investigated. Nine 20 cm×20 cm quadrats were taken from each of three sites (80 m–100 m apart) within a putatively impacted location near a sewage outfall (I) and at each of two control locations (Cs) by destructive sampling by SCUBA divers at a depth of 3 m–4 m. A total of 5507 specimens of 151 species were collected. The average and the variance in total abundance of molluscs were greater, on average, at I than at Cs. Higher abundances at the sewage outfall were largely driven by greater numbers of juvenile molluscs. The Shannon diversity of molluscs (H′) was significantly lower at I, but no difference among locations was detected for the total number of species (S). In addition, the taxonomic distinctness (Δ*) of molluscs was greater at Cs, although it was more variable at I. Multivariate analyses showed that there was a significant difference in the structure of assemblages at I compared with Cs. The location near the outfall was characterized by greater abundances of several species, including especially the gastropods Pusillina philippi, Bittium latreilli, and Bittium reticulatum. There was also greater variability in the structure of assemblages among sites and among quadrats at control locations compared to those near the outfall. Using a suite of univariate and multivariate measures, including diversity indices, detailed information on taxonomic structure and analyses of variability at different spatial scales, provided useful insights into the effects of sewage impacts on these diverse assemblages. These results also highlighted the importance of analysing measures of variance, as well as mean in considering effects of stress in natural communities. 相似文献

The isopod Munnopsurus atlanticus occupies bathyal depths in both the Bay of Biscay (NE Atlantic; between 383 and 1022 m) and in the Catalan Sea (Northwestern
Mediterranean; between 389 and 1859 m). The species was dominant in both assemblages, reaching bathymetric peaks of abundance
on the upper part of the continental slope (400 m depth) in the Bay of Biscay and at ˜600 m in the Catalan Sea. Both the Atlantic
and the Mediterranean populations are bivoltines. Demographic analysis of the Bay of Biscay population revealed the production
of two generations per year with different potential longevity (5 mo for G1 and 11 mo for G2). The mean cohort-production interval (CPI) was estimated at 8 mo, and results of the demographic analysis were also used
to estimate production for the Catalan Sea populations. Mean annual density (D) and biomass (B) were higher in the Bay of
Biscay (D = 356.7 individuals 100 m−2; B = 0.803 mg dry wt m−2 yr−1) than in the Mediterranean (D = 16.3 individuals 100 m−2; B = 0.078 mg dry wt m−2 yr−1). Also, mean annual production was an order of magnitude higher in the Atlantic (between 4.063 and 4.812 mg dry wt 100 m−2 yr−1 depending on the method used) than in the Catalan Sea (between 0.346 and 0.519 mg dry wt 100 m−2 yr−1). M. atlanticus feeds on a wide variety of benthic and pelagic food sources. In both study areas, phytodetritus was not important in the
diet of M. atlanticus. In contrast, gut-content data suggested an indirect coupling with phytoplankton production in both areas via foraminiferans.
The life history and the recorded production are considered in respect to both the dynamics and levels of primary production
and the total mass flux in the respective study areas. Differences in the secondary production of both populations seemed
to be more consistently explained by differences in total mass flux than by differences in the primary production levels;
this is also consistent with the variety of food sources exploited by M. atlanticus.

Genetic diversity among four natural samples of Blackspot seabream (Pagellus bogaraveo, Brünnich, 1768) from different fishing grounds exploited by Spanish fisheries was analyzed through the use of 12 microsatellite
markers. The samples were captured off the Spanish coasts from the Mediterranean Sea to the Cantabrian Sea within the same
continental slope. High levels of genetic diversity were revealed for every population and every locus was polymorphic at
the 0.95 level. The average number of alleles, average heterozygosity and PIC were found to be 15.75, 0.833 and 0.818, respectively.
In general, population differentiation was not detected in these samples. Through AMOVA, a low level of variation between
regions (Mediterranean vs. Atlantic samples) was observed, though this was not significant. A larger percentage of total variation
was observed inside the ‘within populations’ class. Thus, AMOVA did not reveal any significant population substructure. Moreover,
no correlation was found between geographical and FST estimates and the observed results did not allow the improvement of a model of isolation by distance. The high homogeneity
revealed by means of these markers could indicate the absence of physical frontiers between the geographical areas analyzed
in this survey, especially between Atlantic and Mediterranean areas. 相似文献

Spatio-temporal patterns in the diversity of demersal fish communities off the south coast of South Africa 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
The diversity of ecological communities has been the focus of many studies. Because biodiversity provides several indicators
used in an Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries (EAF) to track changes in fish communities, we investigated the spatial and temporal
patterns in the diversity of some demersal fish communities subjected to varying fishing pressure. Depth and catch rate were
the most important predictors in explaining changes in diversity followed by longitude and survey year. Diversity, as measured
by the various indices except for taxonomic distinctness (∆*), initially declined with increasing depth to about a depth of
80 m, then increased to about 150 m after which it declined. Taxonomic distinctness index (∆*) showed an increase in the taxonomic
heterogeneity of the demersal community below the 300-m isobath. Diversity remained relatively constant with increase in longitude
to around 24°E (which has the lowest diversity) after which it increased. The assessment of the temporal trend in diversity
indicates that survey year has a significant effect on all diversity indices except for ∆*. Diversity increased and dominance
declined with time. This may be result of a decline in the abundance of dominant species or an increase in the abundance less
dominant species, or a combination of both effects. Multivariate analysis of the set of diversity indices showed three groups
of indices: those reflecting species richness (S, Margalef’s d), those measuring mainly taxonomic relatedness (∆*), and those balancing the richness and evenness components of diversity
(J′, H′, λ, ∆, Hill’s N1, and Hill’s N2). The relationship between evenness, catch rate, and size was also investigated. Size classes with highest evenness were
found to have lowest catch rate and vice versa. This highlights the need to consider the size and trophic level of species
when linking diversity to the functioning of ecosystems. 相似文献

Hydraulic dredging targeting the bivalve Chamelea gallina in the northern and central Adriatic Sea has been taking place for over 30 years. In the period 2000–2001, 73 commercial dredgers harvested the resource within the sandy coastal area of the Ancona Maritime District (central Adriatic Sea). Despite this, no study aimed at investigating the impact of the fishery on the macrobenthic community of the area has ever been carried out. Sampling was done at 6 monthly intervals in an attempt to relate the impact of hydraulic dredging to different levels of fishing intensity. Data regarding two depth strata (4–6; 7–10 m) were analysed separately by means of permutational multivariate analysis of variance. The results revealed an overall condition of moderate disturbance within the benthic community, especially so within the 4–6 m depth stratum. The response of the benthic community to varying intensities of fishing activity was rapid, occurring within 6 months. Differences in the response of benthic community to differing intensities of fishing activity were found between the two depth strata considered. Significant differences in multivariate location of the benthic community were revealed between the three disturbance levels in both depth strata. Differences in multivariate dispersion were detected above a threshold level of fishing intensity, only within the shallow community. Differences were found between depth strata relating to species diversity and evenness, with significant differences between levels of fishing intensity being evident only within the 4–6 m depth stratum. The results emphasised that, even in a benthic community that is typical of a moderately disturbed environment, the effects of fishing on community structure were still discernible over and above the natural variation. 相似文献

Mesozooplankton community structure in the vicinity of the Prince Edward Islands (PEIs) was investigated during six surveys
conducted in late austral summer (April/May) from 1996 to 1999. Zooplankton samples were collected by oblique tows using a
Bongo net fitted with 300-μm mesh. Surface temperature, average temperature and chlorophyll a were measured in conjunction with each net tow. The positions of the Sub-Antarctic Front (SAF) and the Antarctic Polar Front
(APF), in relation to the islands, were determined by CTD and/or XBT transects to the west of the islands (upstream). Both
fronts were characterized by a high degree of latitudinal variation. Changes in position of the fronts occurred rapidly, the
SAF moving up to ∼120 km in a 2-week period. Consequently, the oceanographic environment in the vicinity of the PEIs was subject
to a high degree of intra- and inter-survey variation. The positions of the SAF and APF appeared to have a significant impact
on phytoplankton biomass in the vicinity of the PEIs, possibly through the alteration of local oceanographic flow dynamics.
Water retention over the island shelf in 1996, associated with location of the SAF far to the north of the PEIs, corresponded
to enhanced chlorophyll-a concentrations (∼1.54 mg m−3). Conversely, when the fronts were close to the islands, as in 1997 and 1999, higher current velocity limited water retention
and chlorophyll-a concentrations in the inter-island region were relatively low (∼0.4 mg m−3). Cluster analyses showed that, in many instances, there was greater similarity among zooplankton communities from different
surveys than among communities within surveys, indicating that short-term variability exceeded inter-annual variability. The
population structure of the copepod Calanus simillimus indicated that there was inter-annual variation in the timing of the biological season. Differences in the population structure
of species, and consequently their contribution to abundance and biomass, may therefore have been an important contributor
to inter-annual variation in community structure. Evidence is provided of a long-term southward shift in the position of the
SAF. It is postulated that this may affect the PEIs by increasing the proportion of allochthonous energy input, because the
PEIs now lie in the path of the front, altering the tropho-dynamics of the island ecosystem. Lower mesozooplankton biomass
associated with warmer sub-Antarctic water may have important negative consequences for higher trophic levels that depend
on mesozooplankton for food.

The pathway for the flow of salt-marsh grass production into marsh food-webs is still not well defined. We compared the abilities
of three marsh macroinvertebrates [salt marsh periwinkles, Littoraria irrorata (Say) (=Littorina irrorata), salt-marsh coffee-bean snails, Melampus bidentatus (Say); and a talitrid amphipod, Uhlorchestia spartinophila Bounsfield and Heard] to access standing-dead leaves of smooth cordgrass (Spartina alterniflora Loisel). The invertebrates were incubated with naturally-decaying leaves, and the rates of removal of organic matter and
living fungal biomass (ergosterol) were measured. The impact of invertebrate activity upon fungal growth rates was measured
as rates of fungal-membrane synthesis (incorporation of radioacetate into ergosterol). The removal rates of organic leaf biomass
per mg individual biomass were highest for amphipods (700 μg mg−1 d−1) and lowest for periwinkles (90 μg mg−1 d−1), but the relatively large biomass of the snails made their removal rates per individual greater than those of amphipods.
Net removal of ergosterol by all three invertebrates was >50% for yellow-brown (early-decay) leaf blades. For fully-brown
(advanced-decay) blades, >50% removal of ergosterol was found only for periwinkles; exposure to coffee-bean snails and amphipods
resulted in a net ergosterol reduction of ≤20%. The lower net reduction of living fungal biomass by coffee-bean snails and
amphipods may have been due to fungal-growth stimulation (2.3-fold stimulation in coffee-bean snails and 1.5-fold stimulation
in amphipods). Grazing by periwinkles did not stimulate fungal growth, possibly because of its high intensity. Grazing by
these three salt-marsh shredders may affect marsh-grass shoot-decay in different ways. Periwinkles may abbreviate the period
of fungal production, and incorporate the decaying material relatively quickly into snail biomass and fecal-pellet rain to
the sediments. Coffee-bean snails and amphipods may enhance and prolong fungal production, along with the formation of fecal-pellet
rain. All three invertebrates fed preferentially on leaf blades rather than leaf sheaths, and feeding rates of gastropods
were higher during the night than during the day.

Recruitment patterns of marine invertebrates are affected both by settlement and early post-settlement events. This study
examined the settlement and recruitment patterns of echinoderms at three sites in the rocky subtidal zone of Bocabec Cove,
Bay of Fundy, Canada using artificial turf collectors and quadrats on the natural substrate. Potential predators were quantified
at two of the sites along transects and in 1-m2 quadrats. Both potential predators and competitors were quantified in 0.0625-m2 quadrats. Settlement varied across sites (1.5–3 km apart) and two years of sampling (2004, 2005). The site of most potential
settlement differed for the three groups of echinoderms: sea urchins (Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis), sea stars (Asterias spp.) and sea cucumber (Psolus fabricii). Settlement densities on the artificial turf collectors tended to be greater than the densities of settlers on the natural
substrate. On the natural substrate, the only significant difference between densities of juveniles over time was that newly
settled sea stars were found in July and were not found the following October. Large lobsters and carnivorous worms were potential
predators with densities that varied between sites. Potential competitors that differed in abundance between sites were herbivorous
gastropods and conspecifics for sea urchins; and carnivorous worms for sea stars. This study suggests that patterns of recruitment
are either set up by patterns of settlement or by events during the first few weeks/months on the benthic substrate for these
echinoderms. 相似文献

The biochemical and energetic composition of body components of ten species of bathyal echinoids, and an asteroid, a holothuroid and a stalked crinoid were determined from individuals sampled from a variety of deep-water sites near the Bahamas (north Caribbean Sea) in October 1988. When compared with other studies of echinoderms, no geographic- or depth-related differences in biochemical or energetic composition were found. Body-wall tissues were composed primarily of skeletal material (mineral ash), but were comparatively high in organic material in the echinothuriid echinoids, and the asteroid and holothuroid. Gut tissues and pyloric cecae had high levels of lipid and protein, indicating their potential role in nutrient storage. Body-wall tissues were generally low in energy, but were highest in the echinoidsAraeosoma belli (7.7 kJ g–1 dry wt) andSperosoma antillense (8.0 kJ g–1 dry wt), the asteroidOphidiaster alexandri (8.9 kJ g–1 dry wt), and the holothuroidEostichopus regalis (13.1 kJ g–1 dry wt). Energy levels of gut and pyloric cecal tissues were two to three times higher than those of body-wall tissues. Total somatic tissue energy values varied greatly among species, ranging from 1.5 kJ in the echinoidAspidodiadema jacobyi to 142.1 kJ inE. regalis. As the bathyal echinoderms examined in this study occur in great abundance, they represent a significant reservoir of organic and inorganic materials and energy in deep-water benthic systems. 相似文献

On the heating environment in street canyon 总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
This study investigates the impact of building aspect ratio (building-height-to-street-canyon-width-ratio), wind speed and
surface and air-temperature difference (Δθs−a) on the heating environment within street canyon. The Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) and energy transport equations
were solved with Renormalization group (RNG) theory version of k-e{\varepsilon} turbulence model. The validation process demonstrated that the model could be trusted for simulating air-temperature and
velocity trends. The temperature and velocity patterns were discussed in idealized street canyons of different aspect ratios
(0.5–2.0) with varying ambient wind speeds (0.5–1.5 m/s) and Δθs−a (2–8 K). Results show that air-temperatures are directly proportional to bulk Richardson number (R
b
) for all but ground heating situation. Conversely, air-temperatures increase significantly across the street canyon with
a decrease in ambient wind speed; however, the impact of Δθs−a was negligible. Clearly, ambient wind speed decreases significantly as it passes over higher AR street canyons. Notably,
air-temperatures were the highest when the windward wall was heated and the least during ground heating. Conversely, air-temperatures
were lower along the windward side but higher within the street canyon when the windward wall was heated. 相似文献

The European fanworm Sabella spallanzanii (Gmelin, 1791) was recently introduced to Port Phillip Bay and is now a conspicuous component of most benthic communities.
Reproduction of the worm was investigated in a population at Queenscliff over a 2 yr period (October 1995 to October 1997)
using gonadal histology. The worms are dioecious (sex ratio 1:1, n=250), and attained sexual maturity at ∼50 mm body length. Reproductive periodicity followed a distinct annual cycle, and
spawning proceeded through an extended autumn/winter period. Spawning was broadly synchronous between sexes, and coincided
with falling seawater temperatures and shorter day-lengths. The females were highly fecund, and >50 000 eggs were probably
shed from large females (>300 mm body length) during the annual spawning period. Breeding cycles of S. spallanzanii in Port Phillip Bay are ∼6 mo out of phase with endemic populations located at similar latitudes in the northern hemisphere.
The spread of S. spallanzanii within Port Phillip Bay has been monitored by divers on an annual basis since 1994. The most recent dive survey (1998) indicates
that S. spallanzanii has extended its range through out the entire 2000 km2 embayment, and has invaded most subtidal habitats. Quantitative estimates of S. spallanzanii abundances were highest on pier pylons (12.5 individuals m−2, 0.5 to 7 m depths). On sediments, estimates were highest at shallow sites (0.3 m−2, 7 m depth), but numbers declined significantly with depth (0.1 m−2, 17 to 22 m depth). Mean worm lengths and biomass were, by contrast, significantly higher at intermediate depths (12 to 17 m)
than in shallower (7 m) or deeper (22 m) locations. S. spallanzanii demonstrates a clear preference for growth in sheltered, nutrient-enriched waters, so it may not spread from Port Phillip
Bay into the adjacent oceanic waters of Bass Strait; however, in view of S. spallanzanii's current high abundance, fecundity and extended spawning periodicity, there is a high risk of future range expansions, mediated
by shipping, into other temperate-water ports.

Analysis of the structure of decapod crustacean assemblages off the Catalan coast (North-West Mediterranean) 总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
We sampled the communities of decapod crustaceans inhabiting the depth zone between 3 and 871 m off the Catalan coast (North-West Mediterranean) from June 1981 to June 1983. The 185 samples comprised 90 species differing widely in their depth distributions. Multivariate analysis revealed four distinct faunistic assemblages, (1) littoral communities over sandy bottoms, (2) shelf communities over terrigenous muds, (3) upper-slope communitics, and (4) lower-slope or bathyal communities. The brachyuran crab Liocarcinus depurator is the most abundant species of the shelf assemblage, although L. vernalis dominates over the shallow sandy bottoms of the shelf. The dominant species of the upper-slope assemblage are nektobenthic species (Solenocera membranacea, Plesionika heterocarpus, Processa canaliculata), pelagic species (Pasiphaea sivado, Sergestes arcticus), and benthic species (Macropipus tuberculatus, Munida intermedia, Nephrops norvegicus). Aristeus antennatus comprise most of the biomass of the lower-slope community, which supports a greater diversity than the other assemblages. The main assemblages appear to be related to different hydrological characteristics, the extent of seasonal fluctuations, and to the changes in sediment structure associated with changes in the steepness of the bottom. 相似文献

In the Mediterranean Sea, the brachiopod Gryphus vitreus (Born) was collected off Corsica by dredging and trawling during three cruises (June 1983; April and July 1984) and from along the French continental coast by dredging during many cruises (1975–1985). The upper limit of its bathymetric distribution lies between 115 and 125 m (rarely, from 90 m), the lower limit between 140 and 200 m depth, forming a belt along the edge of the continental shelf. The horizontal distribution of G. vitreus varies from 250 m to >4 km, and is directly related to geomorphological and hydrodynamic variations resulting from local topography and/or geographical location. The G. vitreus bottoms are bounded on the continental slope by the bathyal mud biocoenosis and on the shelf by the coastal detritic or shelf-edge detritic biocoenosis, both circalittoral. The bottoms correspond to a bathylittoral ecosystem characterized by (1) prevailing environmental conditions which result in a biotope characterized by coarse detritic sediment clogged by fine sand and mud with a high content of small hard substrates, by constant moderate bottom-currents which become weaker with increasing depth, and by small annual variations in temperature and salinity; the occurrence of an ostreobium sp. alga in the shell of G. vitreus indicates the involvement of the phytal system, as defined by Pérès (1982); (2) the G. vitreus biocoenosis, comprised of characteristic macrobenthic stocks (particularly polychaetes, mollusks, and epifaunal species on small hard substrates). Whatever the geomorphology, neighbouring circalittoral and bathyal biocoenoses have little influence on the G. vitreus biocoenosis, which displays a comparatively greater species richness and density. However, immigration of circalittoral species is encouraged by detrital sediments and water currents. The occurrence of this ecosystem as a distinct belt intercalated between circalittoral and bathyal zones is discussed. The ecosystem is considered to be bathylittoral. 相似文献

Effects of the predatory naticid snail Polinices duplicatus (Say) on species composition, diversity and density, of the infauna of intertidal sand-flats at Barnstable Harbor, Massachusetts, USA, were studied using field experiments. Responses of molluscs (prey of P. duplicatus) and nonmolluscs (nonprey) were considered separately to distinguish between the effects of feeding and sediment disturbance during foraging. The fauna of 0.25 m2 predator-exclusion cages, coarse-mesh cages, sieved areas, and controls was followed for 1 yr. Species associations within cages from which predators were excluded were denser, more diverse, and richer in molluscs than those in other treatments. Larger areas (3×3 m) of natural bottom were fenced and maintained as snail exclosures and enclosures during two feeding seasons. For both molluscs and nonmolluscs, diversity (H'), number of species, evenness (SD), and density all decreased with increasing snail density. Intense predation pressure on molluscs and selective feeding on thin-shelled bivalves, which were rare, removed individuals and species of molluscs from the community. Comparison of samples taken inside and outside trails made by snails showed that disturbance of the surface sediment layers by snails decreased the abundance of spionid polychaetes and total nonmolluscs. The sipunculan Phascolopsis gouldi and the bivalve Gemma gemma dominated the community in all experimental treatments and were little affected by the activity of Polinices duplicatus. Predation and disturbance by snails lowered community diversity by removing individuals of the less abundant species, and generally maintained population densities below the level where strong competition would occur. 相似文献
