Fourteen crinoid species are found along the coral reefs of the northern Red Sea that form aggregations of different species at various depths. The shallowest aggregation consists partly of Lamprometra klunzingeri and Capillaster multiradiatus, occurring subtidal to a depth of 2 to 5 m. Of this group, Heterometra savignii inhabits depths down to 12–15 m. Further down, another group of 10-armed crinoids occurs, dominated by Decametra chadwicki and Oligometra serripinna. The deepest aggregation of crinoids occurs at 45 m; its most common members are Colobometra arabica and Comaster distinctus. Feeding on micro- and nanoplankton, shallow-water crinoids show a circadian activity rhythm; in deeper aggregations (10 to 12 m), this behaviour changes with decreasing illumination, to a diurnal activity rhythm. The symbiotic animals living on crinoids comprise 27 taxons, among them Copepoda (6 species), Mollusca (2 species), Polychaeta (11 species, especially Myzostomida); Ophiurida (1 species), Crustacea, Decapoda (6 species); and the clingfish Lepadichthys lineatus. These symbiotic animals form food webs at various depths, according to the distribution of their crinoid host. The occurrence of Indo-West Pacific and Mediterranean commensals on the same crinoid in the Gulf of Aqaba is of special interest.  相似文献

The site of reef-coral calcification has been studied in the branching coral Pocillopora damicornis Lamarck. Electron microscopy and X-ray microprobe analysis were performed on the calicoblast epidermis of newly settled larval stages and of adult coral. During settling, the heterogeneous columnar cell composition of the planktonic larva epidermis is replaced by a simple epithelium consisting of a single cell type, the calicoblast cell. Metamorphosis appears tightly linked to settling, with cell changes occurring within hours after attachment, and is marked by the appearance of a new secretory cell. The calicoblast cell of the adult coral is extremely flattened, and interdigitates extensively with adjacent calicoblast cells. This cell possesses a featureless plasma membrane lacking microvilli or flagella. It characteristically contains large membrane-bound vesicles with homogeneously fine granular contents. Preliminary microprobe analysis indicated a higher calcium content in these vesicles than in surrounding tissue; however, not in concentrations suggesting calcium-carbonate precipitation. They may represent sites of organic matrix synthesis. The calicoblast epidermis is separated from the underlying coral skeleton by a narrow gap. This gap appeared devoid of substructure, either organic or inorganic. The coral soft tissues are attached to the skeleton by mesogleal attachment processes, the desmoidal processes. These consist of a complex fibrous network originating in the mesoglea, and inserting onto the skeleton via specialized attachment regions consisting of electron-opaque membranous plaques. Skeletogenesis in reef-corals probably occurs extra-cellularly, external to the calicoblast epidermis, by simple overgrowth of the skeleton.  相似文献

Laboratory-cultured larvae of the black chiton Katharina tunicata (Wood), collected from central California in May and June of 1979 and 1980, settled preferentially on the encrusting coralline alga Lithothamnium sp. Metamorphosis, which involves the loss of the prototrochal ciliary band, occurred within a period of 2.5 h after larvae began crawling upon the alga. In response to gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) at a concentration of 10-6 M, the lecithotrophic trochophore larvae ceased swimming and settled rapidly. Developmental metamorphosis did not follow settlement in the absence of encrusting coralline alga. However, when both GABA and Lithothamnium sp. were present, larval metamorphosis occurred within 2 h of settlement. Significantly different rates of settlement exist for sibling larvae of different ages; 12 d-old larvae responded more rapily and in greater numbers to treatment with GABA than 10 d-old larvae. Differences in settling rates are attributed to the onset of metamorphic competence.  相似文献

Dimethyl disulfide (DMDS) and dimethyl trisulfide (DMTS) are used by saprophilous insects to locate breeding sites (decaying organic matter), and by brood-site deceptive flowers to attract such insects. However, little is known about the relative importance of these two compounds in eliciting electrophysiological and behavioral responses in the insects. Here, we compared the relative attractiveness of DMDS and DMTS to saprophilous flies in field choice experiments and tested whether potential differences in field responses can be explained by differences in electrophysiological antennal responses to these compounds. Field experiments revealed that the attractiveness of a mixture of these compounds is due to DMTS alone. This result was confirmed by electroantennographic recordings in which flies of four tested species of Calliphoridae (Lucilia sericata, L. caesar, Calliphora vicina, Protocalliphora azurea) and one Muscidae (Musca domestica) respond clearly to DMTS, but not to DMDS. In house flies, however, DMTS elicited electrophysiological responses only, not reflected in behavioral assays. Despite the fact that DMTS and DMDS exhibit similar chemical structures, both the electroantennographic and field responses from saprophilous flies to these two compounds strongly differed. Our study suggests that oligosulfide-responsive saprophilous flies rely on DMTS and not DMDS for finding appropriate breeding sites and that DMTS and not DMDS could act as a key mediator for pollinator attraction in brood-site deceptive plants.  相似文献

The in-situ growth rate of the reef coral Montastrea annularis on a reef at Jamaica, W. Indies was determined for a 1-year period using Alizarin Red-S staining techniques. Growth rate is correlated with water depth and growth form. The flattened growth form of M. annularis allows for continued rapid increase in colony surface area at low light intensities. The geomorphology of Jamaican reefs may in part be controlled by the population ecology of M. annularis.  相似文献

Using 45Ca incorporation into the coral skeleton as a measure of calcification rate, the effect of temperature on clacification rate was studied in the hermatypic coral Pocillopora damicornis. Both immediate and long-term (adaptation) effects were investigated. Temperature has a marked effect on rate — an effect that varies depending on the temperature history of the coral (i.e., temperature adaptation occurs). P. damicornis showed both 27° and 31°C temperature optima, one or the other being dominant depending on the natural water temperature to which the coral was adapted. The two optimum temperatures may indicate two isoenzymes or two alternate metabolic pathways involved in the calcification process.  相似文献

The exchange of Symbiodinium symbionts among scleractinian and soritid hosts could facilitate acclimatization to changing conditions by establishing novel symbiotic unions better tuned to prevailing conditions. In this study, we compare the communities of Symbiodinium spp. in neighboring populations of Orbicella annularis and Sorites orbiculus from St. John, US Virgin Islands, using operational taxonomic unit (OTU) clustering of cloned internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS-2) rDNA sequences. We tested for partitioning of Symbiodinium OTUs by host and depth within and between two sites to explore the potential for symbiont exchange between hosts and light-dependent microhabitat specialization. An apparent lack of overlap in Symbiodinium communities (13 OTUs representing 7 clades) hosted by O. annularis and S. orbiculus suggests that exchange among these hosts does not occur. A low number of novel clade G ITS-2 sequences were found in one O. annularis and one S. orbiculus. A phylogenetic analysis of these sequences revealed them to be sub-clade G2 Symbiodinium, which are most commonly hosted by excavating clionid sponges. A permutational MANOVA revealed within host differences in the partitioning of Symbiodinium OTUs by site but not depth. This finding highlights the potential roles of either dissimilar environmental conditions between sites, or at least partial separation between populations, in determining the types of Symbiodinium contained in different hosts on a spatial scale of a few kilometers.  相似文献

Radiotracer experiments were performed (February–April, 1982) to study the assimilation and metabolism of the transuranium nuclide americium-241 in the marine teleosts Serranus scriba (Linnaeus, 1758) and Scorpaena notata Rafinesque, 1810, caught off the Monaco coast. Fish fed with 241Am-labelled food showed that assimilation of this radionuclide takes place through the gastrointestinal walls and that the small fraction accumulated is incorporated mainly in the skin, muscle and skeleton. Gut-transfer coefficients were similar in both species and averaged 0.7% (range 0.1 to 1.7%) of the ingested activity. The calculated biological half-lives for loss of the absorbed fraction ranged between 49 and 61 d for Serranus scriba and 12 and 117 d for Scorpaena notata. Results from an intramuscular injection experiment indicated that 241Am was retained mainly in the liver, skin and skeleton; the fraction accumulated by muscle was very low. Liver displayed a relatively short biological half-time for 241Am loss of roughly 24 d. Routes of 241Am excretion from the teleosts appear to be through the kidneys, gills and feces with bile serving as a possible excretion route from the liver. From the limited amount of published information available for comparison, experimental evidence is presented which suggests that 241Am taken up via the food chain is more biologically available to marine fish than is plutonium.  相似文献

Jakarta is a booming coastal megacity in Indonesia with over 10 million inhabitants. The rivers flowing through the city district receive enormous amounts of untreated wastewaters from households and industries and discharge high pollutant loads into Jakarta Bay. Applying a screening approach for the identification of characteristic site-specific and harmful organic contaminants, we frequently found the insect repellent N,N-diethyl-m-toluamide (DEET) in river water and seawater samples from Jakarta. The compound was previously reported as persistent aquatic contaminant in industrial countries, and we present here the first data set from a tropical megacity. Concentrations in river water and seawater from Jakarta were exceptionally high, up to 24,000 ng L?1, and exceeded by far all published concentrations in surface waters worldwide. We explained this with massive usage of the compound, lack of wastewater treatment and low average river flow as compared to rivers in other tropical megacities. The usage and properties of DEET indicate its suitability as molecular marker of municipal wastewaters. Such markers are useful to trace emissions from specific pollution sources in aquatic systems as a basis for the investigation of related impacts. We show here that DEET is in particular useful to trace the long-range distribution of municipal wastewaters in tropical freshwater and coastal systems. This application is of great value for tracing such inputs in tropical coastal habitats which are sensitive to changing water quality like coral reefs. This assists to uncover whether specific conditions in these systems could be related to pollutant inputs from land.  相似文献

Abnormal processes of calcification, such as regenerating lesions and neoplasia, situated near the tips(<25 cm) of colonies of Acropora palmata (Lamarck) suppressed normal linear growth. Branches having neoplasia at a larger distance from the tip do not grow significantly differently from controls. This indicates a functional minimal area in terms of energy supply. Neoplasia are pure aragonite and have the same coenosteal structure as regenerative skeletal material. Regeneration of tissue as well as tissue+skeleton lesions involves the simultaneous formation of tissue and regenerative skeleton, trapping foreign material under the regenerated surface. Recovery of a damaged surface slows down with time and this may, in other coral species, result in permanent lesions. A. palmata recovered from all lesions (n=32) within 80 d and appears to be a superior regenerator among Caribbean corals. This is consistent with other life-history characteristics of this highly specialized coral species.  相似文献

A population of Gemma gemma (Totten) was investigated for 6 yr (1978–1983) in Connecticut, USA to determine the relationship between population fluctuations, life tables of successive cohorts and factors affecting life table parameters. Seasonal cycles occurred from 1978–1981. Although density was not abnormally low in summer of 1982, the population declined rapidly thereafter because individuals present during the reproductive season were smaller than the minimal size for reproduction. Forecasts of population size from a time series model based on past densities were compared to forecasts from the intrinsic rates of growth from four separate clam life tables. The latter approach was less precise but more consistent at successfully predicting temporal trends in population abundance. Two factors were identified that potentially controlled population density and structure during the study. Correlational evidence indicated that intraspecific competition between juveniles and adults was intense in 1978 but was reduced during subsequent years. This interaction reduced the size and subsequent fecundity of the young-of-the-year. Correlational evidence also indicated that low salinity in spring of 1978, 1979, 1982 and 1983 reduced juvenile survival, but not that of adults. Qualitative evidence indicated that a third factor, predation, might also have affected G. gemma's population size and structure.  相似文献

The sponge Latrunculia magnifica was found to be toxic for fish. A toxin has been isolated from this sponge by organic extraction-column chromatography and thin-layer chromatography. Several chemical properties of the toxin were determined by spectroscopic analysis. Toxicity tests were performed on the fish Gambusia affinis. At higher latitudes along the west coast of the USA the herbivorous intertidal snail Tegula funebralis (Adams, 1854) lives longer, grows more slowly, but attains a larger size than further south. To the north, age distributions are less predictable and often far from stationary. The differences, which have some generality, can be explained either by a primary temperature effect joined with increased hazards to planktonic larvae in the north, or else may result from a combination of interactions between intensity of predation, population density and food supply. Growth rates of transplanted individuals suggest a genetic basis for the latitudinal differences.  相似文献

A light and electron microscope study was conducted on Nicolea zostericola (Oersted: Grube, 1860) to describe the processes of gametogenesis. N. zostericola is a monotelic species which spawns from 2 to 5 times over a period of 2 weeks at the end of its 1-year life span. The gonads consist of plates of cells bulging from beneath the peritoneum in the thoracic region of the body. Oogenesis has been divided into 3 phases: an ovarian phase in which gametogonia and primary oocytes are retained within the ovary, a follicular phase, in which oocytes are ovulated into the coelom surrounded by several layers of follicle cells and the vitellogenic phase, where individual oocytes rupture through the follicle cells and enter the coelomic fluid where cell growth and yolk synthesis occur. The combined ovarian and follicular phases have a duration of about 3 to 5 weeks and the vitellogenic phase about 5 to 6 months. Vitellogenesis is described on the ultrastructural level. Yolk synthesis involves the participation of the Golgi apparatus and endoplasmic reticulum of the oocyte in possible combination with nutrient absorption from the coelomic fluid. Spermatogenesis involves the rupturing of masses of spermatogonia into the coelom from the testis, surrounded by peritoneal cells. Smaller clusters of spermatocytes are later released into the coelomic fluid where mitotic and meiotic divisions eventually produce flattened plates of sperm. The mature spermatozoan possesses an elongate head, atypical for most polychaetes.  相似文献

When pieces of the staghorn coral Acropora acuminata are incubated with 14C-urea, the label is incorporated into skeletal carbonate. Incorporation of this label differs from that of H14CO 3 - , suggesting urea is not immediately hydrolysed to provide a further source of HCO 3 - . The effects of certain organic substrates upon calcification suggest the ornithine cycle is involved. Citrulline, an ornithine cycle intermediate, is found in high concentrations in the tissues of hermatypic corals. Urea, allantoins, NH3 and arginine are also present. These compounds are barely detectable in zooxanthellae or an ahermatypic coral. The allantoins may be present as calcium salts. It is suggested that allantoins are the medium by which Ca2+ and CO2 are transported to sites of calcification. Hydrolysis of urea, formed by breakdown of allantoins, yields CO2 and NH3. The NH3 may neutralise protons formed during precipitation of CaCO3 and bring about their removal from sites of calcification. As well as providing urea, the ornithine cycle may also be involved in the removal of NH3 from sites of calcification.  相似文献

Phylogeographic patterns among coastal fishes are expected to be influenced by distinct ecological, biological and life history traits, along with historical events and oceanography (past and present). This study focuses on the broad range phylogeography of the Montagu’s blenny Coryphoblennius galerita, a species with well-known ecological features, strictly tied to rocky environments and with limited dispersal capability. Eleven locations from the western Mediterranean to the Bay of Biscay (including the Macaronesian archipelagos) were sampled. Mitochondrial DNA control region (CR) and the first intron of the S7 ribosomal protein gene were used to address the population structure, the signatures of expansion/contraction events retained in the genealogies and potential glacial refugia. The genetic diversity of the Montagu’s blenny was high throughout the sampled area, reaching maximum values in the Mediterranean and western Iberian Peninsula. The results confirmed a marked structure of C. galerita along the sampled area, with a major separation found between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic populations, and suggesting also a separation between the Azores and the remaining Atlantic locations. This study revealed complex and deep genealogies for this species, with Montagu’s blenny populations presenting signatures of events clearly older than the Last Glacial Maximum, with lineages coalescing in early Pleistocene and Pliocene. Three potential glacial refugia where this species might have survived Pleistocene glaciations and from where the recolonization process might have taken place are suggested: South of Iberian Peninsula/North Africa, Mediterranean and Azores.  相似文献

Phosphorus (P) is both a nutrient and a pollutant. For instance, excess P induces water eutrophication followed by death of fishes and other water life. Determination of organic P content in sediments is therefore important to study P cycling and environmental pollution. The most widely used method to determine organic P in sediments is NaOH–EDTA extraction followed by 31P-NMR detection. However, some organic P compounds are difficult to extract using NaOH–EDTA due to the low solubility, thus can not be detected by 31P NMR. Here, we used foam separation to determine organic P in sediment of North Canal of Tianjin City, China. Organic P was first enriched using foam separation coupled with NaOH extraction. The enriched organic P was then analyzed with 31P NMR. The results showed that, compared with the traditional extraction method, foam separation coupled with NaOH extraction enriched more P compound because 31P NMR detected an extra signal of teichoic acid at chemical shift 1.14. This teichoic acid signal was not detected in the extract prepared using only NaOH–EDTA. Our finding demonstrates that determination using foam separation followed by 31P NMR is feasible.  相似文献

Average radial growth rates of the hemispherical aragonite colonies deposited by the Indo-Pacific scleractinian reef coral Platygyra spp. were determined by measuring the thickness of density variations in the skeleton that are revealed by X-radiography. Ninety-one specimens from 21 localities were examined, but only 54 of these exhibited well-defined growth-banding. The apparent temperature dependence of growth rate is linear over the range 23.9° to 29.3°C, averaging 5.4±0.94 mm/year at 24°C, 8.0±0.42 mm/year at 27°C, and 9.7 ±0.58 mm/year at 29°C (90% confidence limits). Expression of the influence of temperature on growth rate in terms of the Arrhenius equation yields an activation energy of 20,680 cal/mole, which is comparable to values for typical biological reactions, but is only half that reported for skeletogenesis in another reef coral, Pocillopora damicornis, on the basis of controlled incubation studies involving 45Ca uptake.  相似文献

Studying the incidence of inbreeding avoidance is important for understanding the evolution of mating systems, especially in the context of mate choice for genetic compatibility. We investigated whether inbreeding avoidance mechanisms have evolved in the malt fly, Drosophila montana, by measuring mating latency (a measure of male attractiveness), copulation duration, days to remating, offspring production, and the proportion of offspring sired by the first (P1) and second (P2) male to mate in full-sibling and unrelated pairs. SNP markers were used for paternity analysis and for calculating pairwise relatedness values (genotype sharing) between mating pairs. We found 18 % inbreeding depression in egg-to-adult viability, suggesting that mating with close relatives is costly. Copulation duration was shorter between previously mated females and their brothers than with unrelated males. Based on an earlier study, shorter copulation is likely to decrease the number of inbred progeny by decreasing female remating time. However, shorter copulations did not lead to lower paternity (P2) of full-sibling males. Progeny production of double-mated females was lower when the second male was a full-sibling as compared to an unrelated male, but we could not distinguish between inbreeding depression and lower female reproductive effort after mating with a relative. Relatedness estimates based on 34 SNPs did not detect any quantitative effect of relatedness variation on copulation duration and progeny production. We suggest that inbreeding depression has been strong enough to select for inbreeding avoidance mechanisms in our Finnish D. montana population.  相似文献

Three new cases of sponge symbiosis between species of Plakortis and Xestospongia were found in reef caves and mesophotic reef habitats of the Caribbean. Plakortis sp. 1 from the Bahamas associates exclusively with Xestospongia deweerdtae which was originally described living freely on the deep fore-reef and caves of Jamaica. In addition, we found Plakortis sp. 2 from Puerto Rico which associates with both X. deweerdtae and a different Xestospongia sp. Sponge specimens were identified using cytochrome oxidase subunit 1, 28S rRNA and 18S rRNA gene sequence fragments, spicule analysis, and histological sections with SEM. Unlike previous sponge pairs, Xestospongia spp. not only grew as a thin veneer of tissue over the Plakortis host sponge but through the mesohyl, forming inner channels (0.1–1 cm) that may provide a benefit by facilitating more efficient water transport through the dense Plakortis tissue. Symbioses with both Plakortis spp. were documented from an early recruit stage through adulthood. Spicule measurements conducted on symbiotic versus free-living X. deweerdtae revealed significantly smaller spicule sizes for symbiotic individuals, suggesting a cost in terms of silicon availability, or a benefit in terms of a lower investment in skeleton synthesis for support. This study reveals new specialized symbiotic associations between distantly related sponge genera that likely represent an alternative strategy of adaptation for life in reef caves and mesophotic reefs.  相似文献
