Fatty acid analyses of lipids in the asteroids Ctenodiscus crispatus (Retzius), Asterias lincki (Müller and Troschel) and Pteraster militaris (O. F. Müller) collected in Balsfjorden, near Tromsø, northern Norway in 1978–1980, were performed to further our understanding of the asteroids' reproductive biology. Fatty acid compositions were determined in phospholipids, triacylglycerols and alkyldiacylglycerols isolated from ovaries of frozen C. crispatus. The major polyunsaturates in phospholipids were 20:4(n-6) followed by 20:5(n-3). Both the triacylglycerols and alkyldiacylglycerols were relatively deficient in polyunsaturates but had 20:1(n-13) and 18:1(n-7) as major components. Both these liqid classes had additionally 15% of their fatty acids as a variety of odd-numbered and branched-chain fatty acids. The fatty acid composition of neutral glycerides, largely alkyldiacylglycerols, from heat-dried ovaries of C. crispatus was not materially different from that of alkyldiacylglycerols isolated from the ovaries of frozen individuals. The fatty acid composition of neutral glycerides, largely alkyldiacylglycerols, from heat-dried ovaries of P. militaris was similar to that for C. crispatus in that 20:1(n-13) and 18:1(n-7) were major components, and odd-numbered together with branched-chain fatty acids accounted for about 15% of the total fatty acids. The fatty acid composition of neutral glycerides, consisting of equal amounts of triacylglycerols and alkyldiacylglycerols, from heat-dried ovaries of A. lincki differed from those of the previous two species in that 20:1(n-9) and 18:1(n-9) were major components and odd-numbered together with branched-chain fatty acids accounted for less than 5% of the total fatty acids. The results are discussed mainly in terms of lipid biosynthetic mechanisms within the asteroids and the interplay between internal biosynthetic activities and dietary fatty acids, particularly those from bacterial sources, is considered.  相似文献

Seasonal changes in biochemical composition of tissues are compared in a shallow inshore and deeper offshore population of the seastarSclerasterias mollis (Hutton, 1872) on the Otago shelf, New Zealand, from 1985 to 1986. The biochemical composition of the body wall, gonads and pyloric caeca of the two populations did not differ greatly, even though reproductive output and nutrient storage of reserves were consistently higher in the offshore population. The biochemical composition of the ovaries and testes differed. High levels of carbohydrate and lipid were maintained in the ovaries from the commencement of vitellogenesis until spawning occurred. The testes had higher ash levels during spermatogenesis. During the annual reproductive cycle, an inverse relationship in the carbohydrate levels between the ovary and the pyloric caeca suggests nutrient transfer from the pyloric caeca to the gonads during gametogenesis. Annual changes in biochemical composition indicate that the body wall is also used for nutrient storage.  相似文献

The lipid class composition and the fatty acid composition of total lipids of the cysts, newly hatched nauplii and 24-h-old metanauplii of a Spanish parthenogenetic diploid strain ofArtemia sp. were studied. Substantial differences in the total lipid level occurred among these stages, with a marked increase from the cyst to the nauplii being followed by a decrease in the metanaupliar stages. This variation affected the absolute levels (mg/g dry wt) of the total lipid classes and individual fatty acids, although the percent composition of the fatty acids in total lipid was essentially unchanged. An exception occurred during hatching in that the percentages of 16:0 and 16:1n-7 in total lipid decreased whereas that of 20: 5n-3 increased. The lipid classes showed higher variation than the fatty acids both in absolute and in relative terms, and in particular, the ratio of phosphatidylcholine:phosphatidylethanolamine decreased progressively from cysts to nauplii and metanauplii. The implications of these findings for the use ofArtemia sp. as a larval feed in aquaculture are considered.  相似文献

Changes in total lipids, lipid classes and their fatty acid contents were studied in the ovaries and midgut glands ofPenaeus kerathurus Forskäl females during sexual maturation. The shrimp were captured in the Gulf of Cádiz (southwest Spain) in 1990. The lipid content and fatty acids, in relative terms, increased during ovarian development. The greatest changes occurred between Maturation Stages III and IV. Ovarian lipids were dominated by polar classes, whereas in the midgut gland the major classes were triacylglycerols and sterol esters. The amounts of major fatty acids in ovaries (16:0, 16:1n-7, 18:1n-9, 18:1n-7, 20:5n-3 and 22:6n-3) increased with increasing maturity, but declined slightly between Stages III and IV. The total polar lipid content of the midgut was 5.7% (by dry weight) and its fatty acid composition remained constant during the whole study period. Total lipid content of the midgut gland showed an upward trend during sexual maturation, except between Stages II and III, when a slight decrease was observed. Predominant fatty acids in the midgut gland (16:1n-7, 20:5n-3 and 22:6n-3) displayed a noteworthy decline between Stages II and III, corresponding with the marked increase in total lipid fatty acid content in the ovaries during the same period.  相似文献

The variation in the concentration and fatty acid composition of lipid classes during the molting cycle of the prawn Penaeus japonicus was investigated. The lipid concentration of the whole body reached a maximum at mid-premolt (Stage D2) and then decreased to low level at late premolt (Stage D3–4). The accumulation of lipids during the premolt period seemed to be attributable to the increase of both polar and neutral lipids. The increase of neutral lipids at Stage D2 was derived from not only triglycerides but also free sterols and free fatty acids. Regarding the fatty acid composition of every lipid class, a marked variation occurred mainly at the intermolt (Stage C). In this stage, the polar lipids were rich in monoenoic acids such as 18:1 and poor in polyenoic acids such as 20:53 and 22:63. The triglycerides were rich in polyenoic acids at Stage C, but poor in monoenoic acids such as 16:1 and 18:1. The steryl esters contained large amounts of saturated acids such as 16:0 and 18:0 throughout the molting cycle, however the level of polyenoic acids increased at Stage C.  相似文献

We investigated physiological traits associated with a reproductive-resting stage in adult female harpacticoid copepods, Coullana canadensis (Willey). Our hypothesis was this stage represents a life-history strategy that could increase fitness by improving winter survivorship and future reproductive success in spring. To test if physiological rates are suppressed in this stage, we compared gut-cell morphology, nitrogen excretion rates, enzyme activities, and phytoplankton grazing rates of reproductive-resting and reproductive females reared in the laboratory under high food conditions. Copepods came from laboratory cultures originating from individuals collected in Maine and Maryland, USA in 1990. Reproductive-resting females had lower physiological rates, and the surface area of gut-cells was reduced compared to reproductive females. Distinct morphological differences in the distribution of lipids between reproductive and reproductive-resting females were observed under light and electron microscopy, the latter having a diffuse accumulation of lipid in the area normally occupied by the ovaries. Differences in lipid composition were also found. Reproductive copepods had a significantly higher ratio (%) of polar lipids to total lipid, and a lower proportion of triacylglycerols compared to reproductive-resting copepods. These laboratory findings are consistent with the hypothesis that the reproductive-resting stage in C. canadensis is an adaptive response to increase winter survival. Survival of Ctenodiscus crispatus during exposure to hypoxia (P O 2<3 mm Hg) at 5°C is greater than that of any echinoderm reported in the literature, the LT50 being 248 h; this is reduced to 236 h in the presence of hydrogen sulfide. Unlike Asterias vulgaris and A. forbesi, both of which lose the tube foot response to tactile stimulation long before death from hypoxia occurs, C. crispatus remains responsive until death. The extension of the highly protrusible epiproctal cone, which occurs in 75% of the mud stars simultaneously exposed to hypoxia and H2S, serves to maintain burrow contact with the overlying water. The rate of oxygen consumption remains constant down to an ambient oxygen partial pressure of 10 to 25 mm Hg, becoming more oxygen-dependent after prior exposure of the asteroids to hypoxia. C. crispatus exhibits a clear oxygen-debt phenomenon as well as a compensatory reduction in the residual P O 2 (oxygen partial pressure at which oxygen consumption ceases) from 2.4 to 0.2 mm Hg after hypoxic exposure.  相似文献

The gonad index in the deposit-feeding asteroid Ctenodiscus crispatus (Retzius) in the Gulf of Maine (USA) is seasonally less variable than in any other sea star, ranging from 2.99 to 4.98% of dry body weight in females and from 2.28 to 3.42% in males, and varies in concert with, rather than reciprocal to, the pyloric caecum index. Biochemical composition and, hence, caloric content, of the gonads also show little seasonal change, suggesting that reproduction is aseasonal and continuous in this population. Oocyte development is asynchronous, all females having a full size range of oocytes (from less than 30 m to greater than 400 m diameter) throughout the year. Seasonally determined size-frequency distributions of juveniles, oocyte cytology and size-frequency distributions, responsiveness of adult females to 1-methyladenine, and oxygen uptake rates indicate that variations in reproductive intensity are superimposed on continuous reproduction, and seem related to changes in phytoplankton production rather than to temperature. The rich neutral lipid content (ca. 50% of total lipid) and large egg size (>400 m) in the ovaries suggest that development is direct. The population is extremely variable genetically, polymorphism among 13 enzyme-coding genes being 77% and average heterozygosity being 0.174. The reproductive pattern and genetic variation in the eurybathic C. crispatus are similar to those in deep-sea echinoderms. This may be related to the constancy of the population's detrital food source, to small-scale heterogeneity of its physical environment, and to low individual vagility.  相似文献

The lipid content and fatty acid composition of the small common wrasse Symphodus ocellatus was analysed within two populations located in very different biotopes on the French shore: a Caulerpa taxifolia meadow located in Cap Martin and a Posidonia oceanica bed located in Villefranche. Polar lipids represented 82–90% of the total lipid in adult female livers, gonads and in eggs. Cholesterol in gonads and eggs and triacylglycerols in livers were the dominant neutral lipids. Differences in lipid classes were found in livers between the two populations, but not in their gonads and eggs. Moreover, a quantitative difference in total lipid content was evident. Young fish living on the C. taxifolia meadow in winter had 21% less lipid than those living on the P. oceanica bed. The populations of S. ocellatus showed differences between triacylglycerol versus phospholipid fatty acid compositions and between gonad versus liver fatty acid compositions. Moreover, a significant difference was found between both populations in their liver triacylglycerol fatty acid compositions, suggesting a difference in diet. Gut content analysis supported this hypothesis as it showed important differences in the ingested preys between the two populations in January (planktonic vs. benthic, frequency of isopods) and in June (frequency of gastropods). Thus, we found that the fish populations from Villefranche and Cap Martin showed significant differences in body lipids due to different nutritional habits.Communicated by S.A. Detailed information is presented on the changes in lipid-class profiles (polar lipids, total neutral lipids, free sterols, steryl esters, triacylglycerols, neutral ether lipids and free fatty acids), which are manifest during the annual reproductive cycle of the seastarAsterias rubens for both the storage organs (pyloric caeca) and utilizing organs (ovaries). The ovaries appear to accumulate all individual lipid components proportional to progression of vitellogenesis. Pyloric caeca, in contrast, show variable lipid-class levels, probably due to more complex processes in these organs, operating simultaneously: digestion of food, accumulation of storage lipids, mobilization of stored lipids and their release. The results are discussed in terms of current knowledge on the role of lipids in echinoderm reproduction.  相似文献

The present research was aimed at studying the synthesis of lipids from 14C-acetate in vitro by ovarian tissue in relation to oogenesis and at examining the binding of newly synthesized lipids to ovarian proteins. Lipid synthesis gradually increased during oogenesis. Fifty percent of the newly synthesized lipids was phosphatidyl choline; triacylglycerols reached 30 to 35%; diacylglycerol was a relatively important component of the synthesized neutral lipids in immature ovaries. Cholesterol was not synthesized. Only saturated (73%) and monounsaturated (26%) fatty acids were labeled. Polyunsaturated fatty acids were not synthesized. Bound lipids in developing ovaries were associated mainly with vitellin. Lipids were bound also to two other proteins in immature ovaries. Binding of lipids to vitellin was observed at the commencement of vitellogenesis. Up to a third of the newly synthesized lipids was bound to vitellin, with triacylglycerols and phosphatidyl choline as the main bound lipids. Peneaus semisulcatus individuals examined in the present study were collected in Haifa Bay, Israel during the years 1990 to 1992.  相似文献

Lipids of the Arctic ctenophore Mertensia ovum, collected from Kongsfjorden (Svalbard) in 2001, were analysed to investigate seasonal variability and fate of dietary lipids. Total lipids, lipid classes and fatty acid and alcohol compositions were determined in animals, which were selected according to age-group and season. Changes in lipids of age-group 0 animals were followed during growth from spring to autumn. Total lipids increased from May to September. Lipids as percentage of dry mass were lowest in August indicating their use for reproduction. Higher values occurred in September, which may be due to lipid storage for overwintering. Wax esters were the major lipid class accounting for about 50% of total lipids in age-group 0 animals from July and August. Phospholipids were the second largest lipid fraction with up to 46% in this age-group. The principal fatty acids of M. ovum from all age-groups were 22:6(n-3), 20:5(n-3) and 16:0. Wax ester fatty alcohols were dominated by 22:1(n-11) and 20:1(n-9) followed by moderate proportions of 16:0. The unique feature of M. ovum lipids was the high amount of free fatty alcohols originating probably from the dietary wax esters. In May, free alcohols exhibited the highest mean proportion with 14.6% in age-group 0 animals. We present the first data describing a detailed free fatty alcohol composition in zooplankton. This composition was very different from the alcohol composition of M. ovum wax esters because of the predominance of the long-chain monounsaturated 22:1(n-11) alcohol accounting for almost 100% of total free alcohols in some samples. The detailed lipid composition clearly reflected feeding of M. ovum on the herbivorous calanoid species, Calanus glacialis and C. finmarchicus, the abundant members of the zooplankton community in Kongsfjorden. Other copepod species or prey items seem to be less important for M. ovum.  相似文献

The temperate sea anemoneAnemonia viridis (Forskäl) contained about 11% lipid on a dry weight basis when maintained at light levels of about 10µE m–2 s–1 and a temperature of 10°C. Aposymbiotic forms of the anemone had similar lipid levels. These values are very low compared with tropical symbiotic Anthozoa in which lipid levels constitute up to 50% of dry weight. In symbioticA. viridis, <6% of total lipid consisted of the storage lipids, wax esters and triglycerides. Most of the triglyceride was stored in the animal tissues rather than the zooxanthellae. Zooxanthellae contained only small amounts of wax esters. An analysis was made of the wax ester, triglyceride and fatty acid composition of symbiotic anemones, isolated zooxanthellae and aposymbiotic anemones. Wax ester composition was similar in symbiotic and aposymbiotic forms. However, triglyceride composition differed. In particular trimyristin (C42) was found only within the symbiotic association. Fatty acids showed a high degree of unsaturation, and acids with both even and odd numbers of carbon atoms were found. The most abundant fatty acid was 16:0 in all samples, except for the total lipids from zooxanthellae in which the major fatty acid wastrans-18:1.  相似文献

The composition of lipids and fatty acids was determined for the livers, muscle, pancreas, kidney and stomach fluids of deepwater chondrichthyan species (including 11 squaliformes, 3 chimaeriformes, 1 hexanchiforme and 3 carcharhiniformes) caught as bycatch from continental waters off south-eastern Australia. The lipid class, fatty acid and fatty alcohol composition differed markedly in each tissue and in each species. The lipid and fatty acid composition of large, lipid-rich (38–70% wet weight, ww) livers demonstrated the multifunctional role of this organ in: lipid distribution, storage and biosynthesis, and buoyancy regulation. In the liver, the importance of certain lipids (including squalene, diacylglyceryl ethers, triacylglycerols and to a lesser extent wax esters) as mediators of buoyancy varied according to lifestyle and habitat. Less variability was observed in the muscle profiles, characterized by low lipid content (<1.0% ww) and high relative levels of polar lipids (>70%). The lipid and fatty acid profiles of the kidney and pancreas showed the highest intraspecific variability, suggesting these organs also have complex roles in lipid storage and metabolism. Overall intra- and interspecific differences in the tissue fatty acid profiles could be related to differences in a number of factors including phylogeny, habitat (depth), buoyancy regulation and diet and presumably also reflect different ecological roles. The lipid and fatty acid profiles are the first published for Rhinochimaera pacifica, Chimaera lignaria and Figaro boardmani and the first to demonstrate interspecific variation in lipid profiles of various tissues of deepwater chondrichthyans. The application of multivariate analysis to lipid class and fatty acid tissue profiles in chondrichthyans inferred dietary differences and metabolic preferences between species and habitats. These results have important implications for the future use of fatty acids as dietary tracers in chondrichthyan research.  相似文献

The sea butterfly Limacina helicina was collected from May to September 2001 in Kongsfjorden, Spitsbergen, to investigate population structure and body and lipid composition with regard to life cycle and reproductive strategy. Veligers and juveniles were only found in late autumn and spring, whereas females occurred from July to September. The size of the females increased until mid-August and decreased in September. Dry and lipid mass were closely related to size; dry mass increased exponentially and lipids linearly with size. The lipid content was highest in veligers (31.5% of dry mass) and juveniles (23.6%) but low in females (<10%). Phospholipids were the dominating lipid class followed by triacylglycerols. Females, veligers, and egg ribbons, all from September, were richest in phospholipids. Juveniles contained the highest amounts of triacylglycerols, whereas females had low levels in July and the beginning of August. In mid-August, levels of triacylglycerols were variable and higher. This suggests that females were in their main spawning period and the high variability in triacylglycerols points to different stages within the spawning cycle. Enhanced amounts of free fatty acids in females from July may be related to gonad development. The 16:1(n-7) fatty acid was more dominant in spring whereas 18:4(n-3) increased in summer and autumn, which reflects a change in diet from diatom-dominated food items in spring to dinoflagellates in summer/autumn. Small amounts of long-chain monounsaturated fatty acids suggest ingestion of copepods, and the fatty acid composition of veligers feeding on particulate matter. L. helicina has a one-year life cycle with peak spawning in August and over-winters as veligers that may grow to juveniles during the winter period. They metamorphose into juveniles during spring, develop to males in early summer, and mature into females in July and August.Communicated by M. Kühl, Helsingør  相似文献

To better understand the feeding and reproductive ecology of euphausiids (krill) in different ocean environments, lipid classes and individual lipid components of four different species of euphausiids from Northeast Pacific (temperate species) and Southern Ocean (Antarctic species) were analyzed in animals from multiple life stages and seasons. The dominant krill species in the Northeast Pacific Euphausia pacifica and Thysanoessa spinifera, were compared to the two major Antarctic species, Euphausia superba and E. crystallorophias. Analysis comprised total lipid and lipid classes together with individual fatty acid and sterol composition in adults, juveniles, and larvae. Antarctic krill had much higher lipid content than their temperate relatives (10–50 and 5–20% of dry mass for Antarctic and temperate species, respectively) with significant seasonal variations observed. Phospholipids were the dominant lipid class in both temperate krill species, while neutral storage lipids (wax esters and triacylglycerols for E. crystallorophias and E. superba, respectively) were the major lipid class in Antarctic krill and accounted for up to 40% of the total lipid content. Important fatty acids, specifically 16:0, 18:1ω9, 20:5ω3, and 22:6ω3, were detected in all four krill species, with minor differences between species and seasons. Detailed lipid profiles suggest that krill alter their lipid composition with life stage and season. In particular, larval Antarctic krill appear to utilize alternate food resources (i.e., sea-ice associated organisms) during austral winter in contrast to juveniles and adults (i.e., seston and copepods). Lipid dynamics in krill among krill in both systems appear closely linked to their life cycle and environmental conditions including food availability, and can provide a more complete comparative ecology of euphausiids in these environmentally distinct systems.  相似文献

The bathyal West Antarctic Peninsula (WAP) shelf experiences intense seasonal variability in primary production, with summer phytoplankton blooms yielding intense pulse of phytodetritus to shelf sediments. Echinoderms form a conspicuous proportion of the deposit-feeding megabenthos on the shelf and of these Amphipneustes lorioli was the most abundant irregular echinoid. To explore the reproductive response of A. lorioli to this seasonal production cycle, A. Lorioli was sampled at one location on the WAP shelf during four separate cruises between March 2000 and March 2001. Reproductive patterns were determined by histological analyses of gonad tissue, and elemental (CHN) analyses were used to estimate the nutritional and energetic status of the body tissues. Histological analysis of the brooding echinoid A. lorioli suggested a quasi-continuous gametogenic pattern in both the ovaries and the testes. Biochemical analysis of the gonads and the gut tissues were consistent with a continuous gametogenic cycle, showing no significant changes in the biochemical composition of the tissues among seasons. Size-frequency distributions of the embryo and juvenile echinoids within the adults’ brood pouches revealed a synchronous recruitment of embryos and juveniles in specific cohorts between different adult specimens. Whilst this occurrence of different cohorts of the developing brood may be an adaptation to limited brood space, there may also be an external factor influencing the synchrony between adult individuals. Nonetheless, a continuous gametogenic cycle and the lack of seasonal variation in the biochemical composition of gonad and gut tissues suggest that this deposit-feeding irregular urchin is exploiting a persistent sediment food bank in WAP shelf sediments throughout much of the year.  相似文献

Asexual and sexual reproduction were studied in an intertidal population of Nepanthia belcheri (Perrier) at Townsville, Queensland, Australia, by regular sampling over a year (March 1976-March 1977) and by histological analysis of gonads. Fission reached a peak in early winter (April–June), when about 45% of the population showed evidence of recent fission. Propensity for fission was unrelated to longest arm length. Seven-armed seastars predominated in the population and these underwent fission in two stages to produce one 3-armed fragment and two 2-armed fragments. Fission planes were not related to numbers or positions of madreporites. Hermaphroditism was a normal sexual condition in the population. Almost all gonads contained oocytes, but some gonads functioned as ovaries (without spermatogenic tissue) while others functioned as testes. Seastars with mature ovaries were significantly larger than those with mature testes, indicating protandry, as in other hermaphroditic asteroids. However, fission complicates the pattern of gonad development by causing regression or retardation of gonads and by apparently having a masculinizing effect, so that ovaries may change to testes in fission products. There was a period of sexual reproduction in early summer (October–November). This followed the period of intense fission and regeneration, and a population change from predominately functional females to males. Consequently there was an extreme imbalance against mature females at sexual reproduction, further reducing potential fecundity. Thus, sexual reproduction was very subordinate to fission as the means of recruitment. The 450 m diam eggs probably give rise to pelagic lecithotrophic development and, if this is the case, N. belcheri retains the advantage of complementing reliable recruitment from fission with a dispersive phase. The combination of fission and hermaphroditism is particularly advantageous for a very sparse dispersal of larvae, as a functionally dioecious population may develop from one larva settling in a new locality.  相似文献

Freshly caught orange roughy (Hoplostethus atlanticus) obtained at the edge of the Chatham Rise, east of the South Island of New Zealand, in June 1988, were used to investigate tissue-specific lipid synthesis and to obtain blood for plasma lipoprotein analysis. Tissue slices prepared from an intraneurocranial fat deposit, pieces of skull (neurocranium), swimbladder and liver were incubated with radioactive acetate, palmitate and oleate, and the labelled lipids extracted and analysed. All four tissues could incorporate acetate label into fatty acids which were themselves incorporated into triacylglycerols and phospholipids although not into wax esters, the most abundant lipid class in these tissues. Exogenous palmitate and oleate were also incorporated into more complex lipids, with the label from oleate (but not palmitate) being found in wax esters as well as triacylglycerols and phospholipids. The distribution of the label in the wax esters showed that some reduction of the fatty acid to fatty alcohol had occurred. The only exception to this pattern was the swimbladder, which incorporated small amounts of palmitate-label into both the fatty acid and fatty alcohol portions of the wax esters. Lipoproteins were isolated from serum by centrifugation. All lipoprotein classes contained phospholipid, cholesterol, triacylglycerol, cholesteryl esters and wax esters. A very low-density lipoprotein class also contained large amounts of unesterified fatty acids, which are possibly artefacts resulting from storage of the samples. Significant quantities of-3 fatty acids were also found in the serum lipids.  相似文献

Various developmental stages (early larvae to adults) of Euphausia superba have been collected in different seasons in the Weddell Sea, the Lazarev Sea and off the Antarctic Peninsula to investigate the role of lipids and fatty acids in the life cycle of the Antarctic krill. The total-lipid data for E. superba exhibited seasonal variations, with low lipid levels in late winter/early spring and the highest levels in autumn. Seasonal changes were most pronounced in the immature and adult specimens, increasing from about 10% lipid of dry mass to more than 40%. The fatty-acid compositions of the younger stages were dominated by 20:5(n-3), 22:6(n-3) and 16:0. These are typical phospholipid fatty acids, which are major biomembrane constituents. The phospholipid composition was similar in the older stages. With increasing storage of triacylglycerols in the lipid-rich immature and adult stages, the fatty acids 14:0, 16:0 and 18:1(n-9) prevailed, comprising about 70% of total triacylglycerol fatty acids. The trophic-marker fatty acids 16:1(n-7) and 18:4(n-3), indicating phytoplankton ingestion, were less abundant. They reflected, however, the dependence of the larvae on phytoplankton as well as the seasonal changes in algal composition. The generally close linear relationships between fatty acids and lipid suggest that the fatty-acid compositions of the collected specimens were largely independent of the respective developmental stage, season and region. The linear fit indicates that triacylglycerol accumulation started at a level of about 5% of total lipid. Considering the various overwintering scenarios under discussion, the life cycle and reproductive strategies of krill are discussed in the context of the lipid metabolism and fatty-acid composition of E. superba. Lipid production is effective enough to accumulate large energy reserves for the dark season, but E. superba does not exhibit the sophisticated biosynthetic pathways known from other Antarctic euphausiids and copepods. Although important, lipid utilisation appears to be just one of several strategies of E. superba to thrive under the extreme Antarctic conditions, and this pronounced versatility may explain the success of this species in the Southern Ocean.
