This paper investigates the nexus between greenhouse gas emissions and poverty alleviation in the Economic Commission of West African States between 1985 and 2020 applying autoregressive distributed lag and Granger causality techniques. The results reveal that carbon dioxide non-significantly relates to gross domestic product per capita positively while nitrous oxide and foreign direct investment impacts gross domestic product per capita positively. Methane negatively impacts gross domestic product per capita. The governments should use conventions to regulate greenhouse gas emissions’ effects on environmental degradation regionally and globally. The study underscores that countries should diversify to cleaner energy sources. This would reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the atmosphere. Massive technological investment is required to mitigate the greenhouse gas emissions’ negative impacts on the environment which create poverty. This policy implication ensures environmental sustainability and reverses the ugly trend of greenhouse gas emissions on poverty. 相似文献

Lack of technology and efficient management of solid waste coupled with poverty have motivated most developing countries to
sort for cheap waste disposal methods with negative consequences on the environment. Open burning at waste dumps causes serious
toxicological impacts. Most organic solid waste excluding plastics when burned cause considerably little environmental pollution.
However, non-stoichiometric combustion of waste plastics produces significant amounts of various aliphatic and aromatic compounds,
acidic gases, dust and smoke. These products pollute the air, water and soil generating significant health problems with related
socioeconomic impacts on human, animals and plants. Some of these pollutants are toxic and/or carcinogenic, form acid-rain
and influence climate change. Critical discourse and research on environmental toxicology resulting from air pollution with
related health risk and impacts have been catalysed by the enactment of major environmental regulations and increased awareness.
The new clean air act amendment of 1990 is estimated to require about $25billion annually for its implementation in the United
States, indicating the gravity of the pollution problem. Understanding, controlling and mitigating the impacts of chemical
pollution from multiple sources related to open burning of plastics is complex. This paper uses content analysis of relevant
literature and field observations to analyse, evaluate and identify characteristic pollutants including their transmission
potentials, sources and impacts on human health with the assessment, prevention and management of related risk. An affordable
technology-based approach applied within a bottom-up management strategy to prevent and control pollution offers a sustainable
solution underpinned by resource and energy recovery from waste. 相似文献

Socioeconomic Factors Affecting Farmers’ Perceptions of Land Degradation and Stonewall Terraces in Central Palestine 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Land degradation by soil erosion is a socioeconomic and environmental problem facing many developing countries. Application
of stonewall terraces for soil moisture conservation is vital to reducing the environmental impacts of this phenomenon. To
this end, a field plot experiment was conducted in the study area along with the use of a closed-ended questionnaire. The
object of the experiment was to study the socioeconomic impacts of soil erosion on local farmers and their adoption of the
stonewall terrace technique. The study showed a higher net profit in areas that had implemented terrace conservation practices
than in areas that had not (i.e., 3.5 to 6 times higher net profit). Correlation analysis indicated that the farmers’ perceptions,
land ownership, and geomorphology were significantly related to the farmers’ incentives and willingness to adopt terraces
as soil conservation measures (P < 0.05), although the correlations were negative. Smallholder farmers (52% of the interviewed farmers) were involved in the
sale of the agricultural land for urban uses, largely because of the high price and immediate returns offered. However, the
associated land use changes warrant greater involvement of both the private and public sectors. This cooperation may be accomplished
through the introduction of a long-term agricultural loan system and the development of proper legislation accompanied by
a comprehensive and durable infrastructure and service system with the goal of reducing the negative impact of land use changes
and encouraging sustainable use of resources. 相似文献

Industrial shrimp farming has been promoted by international development and financial institutions in coastal indebted poor
countries as a way to obtain foreign exchange earnings, reimburse external debt, and promote development. The promotion of
the shrimp industry is a clear example of a more general trend of support of export-oriented primary products, consisting
in monocultures of commodities, as opposed to the promotion of more diverse, traditional production directed to feed the local
population. In general, it is assumed that export-oriented aquaculture and agriculture, in a framework of liberalization policies,
facilitates economic growth and this is associated with poverty reduction and the improvement of food security. However, it
has been shown that the promotion of export-oriented production, mostly in the hands of big corporations, can have detrimental
consequences for the livelihoods of local populations and the environment. As a result, international institutions, NGOs,
and the industry aim to minimize these impacts by promoting sustainable export-oriented production. But some impacts may remain,
since the main issue is the primary focus on international deregulated markets and the search for cheap primary products.
To illustrate the relationships between the mainstream concept of development, the environmental and social impact of industrial
farming systems, and the promotion of export-oriented production in developing countries, this article analyzes the case of
the shrimp aquaculture industry. 相似文献

A new approach to sustainable tourism development: Moving beyond environmental protection 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Frederico Neto 《Natural resources forum》2003,27(3):212-222
Tourism is one of the largest and fastest growing industries in the world. It is an increasingly important source of income, employment and wealth in many countries. Its rapid expansion has, however, had detrimental environmental (and socio-cultural) impacts in many regions. In this article, I examine the main economic benefits and environmental impacts of tourism, and review the development of the international sustainable tourism agenda. While much of international tourism activity takes place within the developed world, this article will focus on the (economic) development of the industry in developing countries I conclude that new approaches to sustainable tourism development in these countries should not only seek to minimize local environmental impact, but also give greater priority to community participation and poverty alleviation. I argue, in particular, that more emphasis should be given to a 'pro-poor tourism' approach at both national and international levels. 相似文献

Abstract: Water supply uncertainty continues to threaten the reliability of regional water resources in the western United States. Climate variability and water dispute potentials induce water managers to develop proactive adaptive management strategies to mitigate future hydroclimate impacts. The Eastern Snake Plain Aquifer in the state of Idaho is also facing these challenges in the sense that population growth and economic development strongly depend on reliable water resources from underground storage. Drought and subsequent water conflict often drive scientific research and political agendas because water resources availability and aquifer management for a sustainable rural economy are of great interest. In this study, a system dynamics approach is applied to address dynamically complex problems with management of the aquifer and associated surface‐water and groundwater interactions. Recharge and discharge dynamics within the aquifer system are coded in an environmental modeling framework to identify long‐term behavior of aquifer responses to uncertain future hydrological variability. The research shows that the system dynamics approach is a promising modeling tool to develop sustainable water resources planning and management in a collaborative decision‐making framework and also to provide useful insights and alternative opportunities for operational management, policy support, and participatory strategic planning to mitigate future hydroclimate impacts in human dimensions. 相似文献

One of the most critical problems facing many developing countries is that of the alarming rate of depletion of traditional sources of energy, largely fuelwood and charcoal, which together command the largest share of energy used in rural areas. This has resulted in soil erosion, degradation of the land, reduced agricultural productivity and potentially serious ecological change. The social and economic impacts have been detrimental to the countries' populations, particularly for those living in the rural areas. Urgent action is therefore required to correct the fast deteriorating situation through evolution of fitting policies, establishment or strengthening of appropriate institutions and provision of adequate funding. But resolving the situation will be difficult and challenging for the problems are many, some of them complex. New sources of energy such as solar, wind, biomass, hydro and geothermal have a potential role to play in helping meet current and future energy requirements in the rural areas; but their widespread use and acceptance would be enhanced through increased research, development and demonstration, more funding, improved education and training and better flow of information on the advances in these fields. 相似文献

The official environmental discourse in Laos describes a “chain of degradation” stretching from upland shifting cultivation, increased runoff and soil erosion to the siltation of wetlands and reservoirs. This perspective has had wide‐ranging impacts on rural development policy which, in the uplands, has long favoured forest conservation over agriculture. Integrating soil erosion and water sediment data with local perceptions of land degradation in an upland village of northern Laos, this study tests the validity of the official environmental discourse. Biophysical measurements made in a small agricultural catchment indicate a significant correlation between the spatial extent of cultivation and soil erosion rates. However, sediment yields recorded at the outlet of the catchment highlight relatively low levels of off‐site sediment exportation. Furthermore, farmers' perceptions suggest that local land degradation issues and crop yield declines could be less related to soil erosion than to agricultural land shortage, increased weed competition, and fertility losses resulting from the intensification of shifting cultivation. The study concludes that a better understanding and management of land degradation issues can be achieved by developing more inclusive and scientifically‐informed approaches to environmental perceptions and narratives. 相似文献

This article analyzes the official and non-official responses of Filipinos to the depletion of some renewable natural resources (particularly water quality). Contrary to popular assumption, and contrary to official statements of the Philippine government at international conferences, it appears that environmental depletion is a political issue in the Philippines. The reasons for the salience of resource and environmental issues are discussed. The dilemma of the Philippine government is that it is committed to economic progress, but the resources which make that progress possible are in short supply. Timber, soil and clean water are endangered by deforestation, erosion and pollution. However, conservation and environmental protection are expensive in the short run. The Philippines faces a problem common to developing tropical countries. 相似文献
