Problems with the notion of evenness, such as ambiguity, proliferation of indices, choice of indices, etc. can be overcome by a more fundamental, mathematical approach. We show that the Lorenz curve is an adequate representation of evenness. The corresponding Lorenz order induces a partial order in the set of equivalent abundance vectors. Also diversity can adequately be studied through a partial order and represented by a curve derived from the classical Lorenz curve. This curve is known as the intrinsic diversity profile (or k-dominance curve) and was introduced by Patil and Taillie (1979) and Lambshead et al. (1981). 相似文献

Particulate emission sampling was conducted at Dofasco’s No. 2 Coke Want Quench Tower in August 1977. The sampling was performed by York Research Corporation using EPA developed quench tower sampling techniques. Particulate emissions averaged 0.245 lb/ton of coal over 17 tests. The mist eliminator in the tower consists of two rows of zig-zag baffles inclined at 20° from the vertical. Particle size data indicated that the majority of the particulate emissions were less than 10 microns in diameter. A mathematical model was used to predict the effect of particle size and gas velocity on collection efficiency. Pressure drop and re-entrainment are two restrictions which are considered in baffle design. Quench towers are the largest contributor to Dofasco’s allowable off-the-property suspended particulate impingement concentration. 相似文献

Greening flood protection (GFP) is increasingly recognized as an adaptive and flexible approach to water management that is well suited to addressing uncertain futures associated with climate change. In the last decade, GFP knowledge and policies have developed rapidly, but implementation has been less successful and has run into numerous barriers. In this paper, we address the challenge of realizing green flood protection goals by specifically considering knowledge in the decision-making of a Dutch flood protection project in Lake Markermeer. In this project, an ecological knowledge arrangement and a traditional flood protection knowledge arrangement are compared and their interactions analysed. The analysis provides insight into the specific difficulties of implementing GFP measures and identifies ways to realize GFP goals. The primary challenge is twofold: First, a self-reinforcing cycle of knowledge production and decision-making in the flood protection domain inhibits the introduction of innovative and multifunctional approaches such as GFP; second, the distribution of power is severely unbalanced in terms of ecological enhancement and flood protection, favouring the latter. Implementation of GFP requires structural change and the integration of ecological and flood protection knowledge and policy. Potentially rewarding routes towards this integration are the exploration of shared interests in GFP and the creation of mutual dependency between knowledge arrangements. The case study and the insights it provides show that GFP is far from mainstream practice and that implementation requires serious effort and courage to break with historical practices. 相似文献

Giant honeybees (Apis dorsata) nest in the open and have therefore evolved a variety of defence strategies. Against predatory wasps, they produce highly
coordinated Mexican wavelike cascades termed ‘shimmering’, whereby hundreds of bees flip their abdomens upwards. Although
it is well known that shimmering commences at distinct spots on the nest surface, it is still unclear how shimmering is generated.
In this study, colonies were exposed to living tethered wasps that were moved in front of the experimental nest. Temporal
and spatial patterns of shimmering were investigated in and after the presence of the wasp. The numbers and locations of bees
that participated in the shimmering were assessed, and those bees that triggered the waves were identified. The findings reveal
that the position of identified trigger cohorts did not reflect the experimental path of the tethered wasp. Instead, the trigger
centres were primarily arranged in the close periphery of the mouth zone of the nest, around those parts where the main locomotory
activity occurs. This favours the ‘special-agents’ hypothesis that suggest that groups of specialized bees initiate the shimmering. 相似文献

The conditional time averaged gradient method was used to measure air-surface exchange of nitrogen and sulphur compounds at a semi-alpine site in Southern Norway. Dry deposition velocities were then obtained from the bi-weekly concentration gradient measurements. Annual deposition velocities were found to be 1.4, 11.8 and 4.0 mm s(-1) for NH3, HNO3 and SO2, respectively, if all data were included, and to be 10.8, 11.8 and 13.0 mm s(-1), respectively, if only positive values were included. Measured deposition velocities were compared to two sets of values estimated from a big-leaf dry deposition module applying to two different land types (short grass and forbs, and tundra), driven by measured micrometeorological parameters. The deposition module gives reasonable values for this site throughout the year, but does not reproduce the large variability as shown in the measured data. No apparent seasonal variations were found from either measurements or module estimates due to the very low productivity of the studied area. 相似文献
