The northern mountain region of Vietnam (NMR) is dominated by swidden/fallow farming systems. The fallow land of these systems is populated by small trees and bushes. Since the 1960s the government of Vietnam has tried to limit or stop swiddening and replace it with permanent upland agricultural fields, paddy, fruit trees and animal husbandry. Discussion in the policy debate and literature focuses on the impacts these changes have on local people’s livelihoods. There have been no attempts to evaluate the impact of these changes on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. This paper examines the realities of current farming system changes taking place at the hamlet level and other changes that could take place due to government land use policies and extension programs. The paper answers the following questions: How could farming system changes influence net GHGs? Which farming system changes in the NMR, the trajectories of changes that are currently observed or those that would be followed if farmers adhere strictly to government policies and programs, will have a greater affect on the GHG contributions from agriculture in the region? Could ‘clean development mechanism’ (CDM) projects make a difference in the profitability of the pathways mentioned? Results show: (1) if farming systems in the NMR continue along currently observed change trajectories there will be increases in GHG emissions; (2) if the NMR farming systems change according to government policies and programs there will be a net sequestration of carbon in regrowing vegetation during the initial 20 years; (3) over the longer term, in areas where systems change to fit government policies, increased GHG emissions from other changes in the farming systems (e.g. increased paddy and increased pig raising in sties) will overtake the amounts of carbon sequestered in vegetation; (4) CMD projects only make a difference if (a) maximum biomass potential of regrowing fallow can be reached; (b) a favourable baseline is chosen; (c) timing and length of the accounting period is correct; and (d) farmers do not take compensatory action in response to government policies. Given these conditions it does not appear that currently envisioned clean development mechanisms would be beneficial to farmers in the NMR.  相似文献

The influence of fetal gender on the level in the first trimester of the serological markers alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), pregnancy-associated plasma protein-A (PAPP-A) and free beta human chorionic gonadotropin (βhCG) and on nuchal translucency is described for 2637 singleton pregnancies with normal outcome. Mean log MoM values for pregnancies with female and male fetuses were calculated using regression of log marker values on gestational age expressed as crown rump length and on maternal weight. Free cyanide (prussic acid) can be degraded by many organisms. Experimental data on the kinetics of degradation by plants, however, are rare. We experimentally determined the mass balance of potassium cyanide in the system nutrient solution/plant/air In the presence of living willows (Salix alba) and light, free cyanide is almost completely eliminated from the nutrient solution, also by a willow cell suspension (> 99%) and even by a dried-out stem (> 80%). The loss is smaller when the willow is autoclaved (30%). Without a willow, the CN can be recovered to more than 89%. The loss depends on light and transpiration. Volatilization and the formation of complexed cyanide are of minor relevance for the elimination of free CN. The most plausible loss process is metabolism by plants. The transfer into the roots and stem does not change with the light/dark-rhythm. The transfer factor (mg CN/kg plant fw/mg CN/l solution) after 24 h, and related to the initial concentration in solution, is between 2 and 3 for roots, 0.1 to 0.6 for leaves and 0.2 for stems. In the roots of willows and elderberries which were growing on the former gas worksite in Holte, Denmark, high concentrations of cyanides were found. In leaves and fruits, concentrations are a factor of 10 to 1000-fold lower and up to as high as that found in non-exposed control plants. Due to these results, a cyanide-polluted site in Denmark has been remediated with poplar trees.  相似文献

A study of the use of car and public transport among residents in 30 residential areas in Greater Oslo indicates that urban planning variables have a significant influence on the energy use per capita for local transport. Residents in local communities with a high density and a short distance to downtown Oslo travel considerably shorter distances and use considerably less energy per capita than those who live in low-density, outer areas. This is true also when the effects of other variables are neutralized. The influence of urban planning variables on the modal split is lower than on energy use. The distribution between public and private transport is influenced most of all by car ownership.  相似文献

Incorporation of 3H-labelled glucose and 3H-labelled N-acetylglucosamine (NAGA) — both precursors to chitin —into the cuticle of Rhithropanopeus harrisii (Gould) larvae (Crustacea: Brachyura) has been examined at different stages of the moult cycle in control larvae as well as in larvae treated with the insect growth regulator diflubenzuron (Dimilin®). As far as the control larvae were concerned, the incorporation of both precursors was high at the postmoult stage when endocuticle was secreted. NAGA appeared to be a more specific precursor of cuticular material than glucose during the premoult stage when exocuticle was produced. Incorporation of both precursors was low immediately before ecdysis and during the intermoult stage when secretion of the cuticle is complete. The results show that incorporation of glucose into chitin was greatly inhibited by the pollutant during the postmoult stage when endocuticle is produced, while incorporation of NAGA was reduced to a lesser extent at this stage. Diflubenzuron treatment markedly affected the incorporation of both NAGA and glucose in the premoult stage during secretion of exocuticle.  相似文献

Environmental planners and managers may want to do their work without political interference, using rational and objective knowledge only. They may also want to serve the common good, be accountable and encourage public participation. This paper explores the tensions between the two approaches and argues that a great deal of politics goes into the very definition and selection of what is considered rational and objective. Too often policy‐makers claim to rely exclusively on objective scientific or economic knowledge, while ignoring other forms of knowledge which may be as essential for the solution or management of the problem. Difficult choices have to be made, and it may well be the political scientist, sociologist or psychologist who can help. Expertise has its own interest in the policy process—it is mainly concerned with perpetuating itself and the search for more knowledge. To be effective as well as rational, environmental managers need to be aware of a broad range of useful knowledge, as well as suspicious of claims that promise too much. They need to be in open communication with society, and this may well require institutional reform.  相似文献

Effects of Dimilin® (TH 6040), an insect growth regulator which interferes with the formation of the insect cuticle, were studied on the larval development of Rhithropanopeus harrisii (Gould) and Sesarma reticulatum (Say) (Crustacea: Brachyura). When larvae were exposed to 0.5 (R. harrisii only), 1, 3, 5, 7, and 10 ppb Dimilin from hatching to the first crab stage, survival in both species decreased in relation to increased concentrations of Dimilin. Survival of R. harrisii larvae wa significantly lower at 1 ppb and higher levels compared with control experiments, and in S. reticulatum a significant decrease in survival began at the 3 ppb level. At 10 ppb Dimilin, no larvae survived to the megalopa stage in either of the two species. The results indicate that early stage larvae of R. harrisii are more sensitive to Dimilin than those of S. reticulatum. When R. harrisii larvae were treated with 10 ppb Dimilin during the intermolt period of each of the 4 zoeal stages, nearly all larvae died during molting to the succeeding stage. First zoeal larvae of R. harrisii exposed to 10 ppb Dimilin at various days during the intermolt period were more sensitive to the compound late than early in the period. It is suggested that Dimilin also may interfere with the formation of the cuticle in crab larvae.  相似文献

The Carnivora spans the largest ecological and body size diversity of any mammalian order, making it an ideal basis for studies of evolutionary ecology and functional morphology. For animals with different feeding ecologies, it may be expected that bite force represents an important evolutionary adaptation, but studies have been constrained by a lack of bite force data. In this study we present predictions of bite forces for 151 species of extant carnivores, comprising representatives from all eight families and the entire size and ecological spectrum within the order. We show that, when normalized for body size, bite forces differ significantly between the various feeding categories. At opposing extremes and independent of genealogy, consumers of tough fibrous plant material and carnivores preying on large prey both have high bite forces for their size, while bite force adjusted for body mass is low among specialized insectivores. Omnivores and carnivores preying on small prey have more moderate bite forces for their size. These findings indicate that differences in bite force represent important adaptations to and indicators of differing feeding ecologies throughout carnivoran evolution. Our results suggest that the incorporation of bite force data may assist in the construction of more robust evolutionary and palaeontological analyses of feeding ecology.  相似文献

This study investigated a person–climate fit model in order to explain the effect of organizational politics on work attitudes. A unique index of compatibility was developed based on the congruence between preferences for political influence processes and those processes perceived to be prevalent in the employment context. A survey of 138 non academic employees of a large public university, representing a variety of jobs, demonstrated that political influence compatibility was clearly related to a wide range of work attitudes (e.g. satisfaction with co-workers, trust in management, evaluation of self). Directions for future research investigating PIC and potential applications of political influence compatibility in human resource management are discussed. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献
