Distribution of Chironomidae (Insecta: Diptera) in polluted rivers of the Juru

The influence of physical and chemical parameters on the abundance and diversity of chironomids was studied in six rivers with
moderate to highly polluted water in the Juru River Basin. The rivers: Ceruk Tok Kun (CTKR) as reference site, and polluted rivers
of Pasir (PR), Juru (JR), Permatang Rawa (PRR), Ara (AR) and Kilang Ubi (KUR) were sampled over a period of five months
(November 2007–March 2008). Nine chirnomid species: Chironimus kiiensis, C. javanus, Polypedilum trigonus, Microchironomus sp.,
Dicrotendipes sp., Tanytarsus formosanus, Clinotanypus sp., Tanypus punctipennis and Fittkauimyia sp. were identified. Assessment
of their relationships with several environmental parameters was performed using the canonical correspondence analysis (CCA).
Tanytarsus formosanus was the most dominant in the relatively clean CTKR and moderately polluted JR with mean densities of
19.66 and 25.32 m?2, respectively while C. kiiensis was abundant in more polluted rivers. Tanytarsus formosanus, Dicrotendipes sp.
and Microchironomus sp. were grouped under moderate to high water temperature, total organic matter (TOM), total suspended solids
(TSS), velocity, pH, phosphates and sulphates. However, Tanypus punctipennis, Fittkauimyia sp., and Clinotanypus sp. were associated
with high contents of river sediment such as TOM, Zn and Mn and water ammonium-N and nitrate-N and they were associated with
higher dissolved oxygen (DO) content in the water. Chironomus kiiensis, C. javanus and P. trigonus showed positive relationships with
TOM, ammonium-N and nitrate-N as well as trace metals of Zn, Cu and Mn. These three species could be considered as tolerant species
since they have the ability to survive in extreme environmental conditions with low DO and high concentrations of pollutants. Based on
the water parameter scores in all rivers, the highest diversity of chironomid larvae was reported in CTKR. With higher concentrations
of organic and/or inorganic pollutants as reported in PPR, KUR and AR, the chironomid larval diversity decreased, and the abundance
of tolerant species, mainly Chironomus spp., increased. 相似文献

This paper reflects critically on the results of a vulnerability assessment process at the household and community scale using a quantitative vulnerabilities and capacities index. It validates a methodology for a social vulnerability assessment at the local scale in 62 villages across four agro‐ecological/livelihood zones in Sindh Province, Pakistan. The study finds that the move from vulnerability narratives to numbers improves the comparability and communicational strength of the concept. The depth and nuance of vulnerability, however, can be realised only by a return to narrative. Caution is needed, therefore: the index can be used in conjunction with qualitative assessments, but not instead of them. More substantively, the results show that vulnerability is more a function of historico‐political economic factors and cultural ethos than any biophysical changes wrought by climate. The emerging gendered vulnerability picture revealed extremes of poverty and a lack of capacity to cope with contemporary environmental and social stresses. 相似文献

A methodology was developed for diagnosing industrial work, which includes questionnaire, observation, measurements, data collection and statistical analysis. A survey was conducted to investigate the relationship between job satisfaction and factors that affect work design in 2 automotives manufacturing companies in Malaysia. A basic work design model was proposed. The aim of this model was to determine the factors that influence employees’ perception towards their work. A set of multiple-choice questionnaires was developed and data was collected by interviewing employees at a production plant. The survey focused on job and environmental factors. The results supported the proposed model and showed that job and environmental factors were significantly related to job satisfaction. They highlighted the significant influence of age, work experience and marital status on job satisfaction. Further, environmental factors, especially the surroundings, context dependence and the building’s function, also had a significant impact on job satisfaction. 相似文献

The kinetics of polyesterification of glycerol, phthalic anhydride and jatropha oil leading to the formation of alkyd resins
were studied. A series of alkyd resins having different amount of jatropha oil viz., 40–80% have been prepared by employing
two stage alcoholysis-polyesterification process. The extent of reaction and average degree of polymerisation were calculated
from the end group analysis of the reaction mixture withdrawn at regular intervals of time. The initial reaction rates followed
the second order kinetics and thereafter deviations were observed. An appreciable degree of conversion was noticed from the
extent of the reaction which lies in the range of 49.5–62.5%. The average degree of polymerisation calculated in the region
of deviation from second order suggested the occurrence of chain branching at relatively shorter intervals along the polymer
chain. The second order rate constants were found to be of the order of 10−5 g (mg KOH)−1 min−1. 相似文献

The effects of cigarette and bidi smoking on pulmonary function tests have been studied in 90 healthy males from North India Forced vital capacity (FVC), peak expiratory flow rate (PEFR), forced expiratory volume in 1 sec (FEV) were determined in 30 nonsmokers (as control group), 30 cigarette smokers and 30 bidi smokers. All the above pulmonary function parameters were found to be lower among smokers as compared to nonsmokers.
