Estuaries in the world are affected by different contamination sources related to urbanisation and port/industrial activities. Identifying the substances responsible for the environmental toxicity in estuaries is challenging due to the multitude of stressors, both natural and anthropogenic. The Toxicity Identification and Evaluation (TIE) is a suitable way of determining causes of toxicity of sediments, but it poses difficulties since its application is labour intensive and time consuming. The aim of this study is to evaluate the diagnosis provided by a TIE based on microscale embryotoxicity tests with interstitial water (IW) to identify toxicants in estuarine sediments affected by multiple stressors. TIE showed toxicity due to different combinations of metals, apolar organic compounds, ammonia and sulphides, depending on the contamination source closest to the sampling station. The microscale TIE was able to discern different toxicants on sites subject to different contamination sources. There is good agreement between the results indicated in the TIE and the chemical analyses in whole sediment, although there are some disagreements, either due to the sensitivity of the test used, or due to the particularities of the use of interstitial water to assess the sediment toxicity. The improvement of TIE methods focused on identifying toxicants in multiple-stressed estuarine areas are crucial to discern contamination sources and subsidise management strategies.

The increasing levels of mercury (Hg) found in the atmosphere arising from anthropogenic sources, have been the object of great concern in the past two decades in industrialized countries. Brazil is the seventh country with the highest rate of mercury in the atmosphere. The major input of Hg to ecosystems is through atmospheric deposition (wet and dry), being transported in the atmosphere over large distances. The forest biomes are of strong importance in the atmosphere/soil cycling of elemental Hg through foliar uptake and subsequent transference to the soil through litter, playing an important role as sink of this element. Soil microarthropods are keys to understanding the soil ecosystem, and for such purpose were characterized by the soil fauna of two Units of Forest Conservation of the state of the Rio de Janeiro, inwhich one of the areas suffer quite interference from petrochemicals and industrial anthropogenic activities and other area almost exempts of these perturbations. The results showed that soil and litter of the Atlantic Forest in Brazil tend to stock high mercury concentrations, which could affect the abundance and richness of soil fauna, endangering its biodiversity and thereby the functioning of ecosystems.  相似文献

The information presented is directed to those individuals concerned with reducing nitric oxide (NO) emissions from gas- and oil-fired utility boilers, either as operators,manufacturers, or those having air quality management responsibilities.

The purpose of this paper is to present the results that are being obtained in a continuing program to reduce NO emissions from gas- and oil-fired utility boilers operated by the Southern California Edison Company. First, an understanding of NO formation and the controlling factors is presented, followed by a discussion of the combustion control techniques of ofF-stoichiometric combustion and reduced combustion temperatures. Results of field testing employing these techniques are demonstrated. Finally, boiler operating characteristics affecting NO and the implementation of the techniques for achieving operating reductions in NO emissions are discussed.  相似文献

Control of particulate emissions from pulverized coal fired steam generators is becoming a significant factor in the siting and public acceptability of large coal burning power plants. The particulate emission limit established by the EPA for new coal fired boilers is 0.03 lb/106 Btu (13 ng/J) Possibly more restrictive than this is the state of New Mexico's particulate regulation which calls for no more than 0.05 lb/106 Btu (22 ng/J) total, and no more than 0.02 lb/106 Btu (9 ng/J) less than 2 microns in diameter. This paper will evaluate the effect of these stringent limitations on the technical feasibility and economics of dry particulate removal. Electrostatic precipitators have been the dominant particulate collection device in the electric utility industry for many years because of their low capital and operating cost. However, increasingly stringent emission standards have led to substantially higher costs for precipitators. These costs have increased sufficiently for fabric filtration to become a competitive alternative in achieving cost effective control. This paper will compare the economics and performance of fabric filtration with respect to conventional electrostatic precipitators. The paper will also address the preliminary evaluation procedures that should be followed in order to select the appropriate device for new or existing coal-fired boilers.  相似文献

Estuarine ecosystems in SE Asia have been poorly studied when compared to other tropical environments. Important gaps exist particularly in the understanding of their biogeochemical function and contribution to global change. In this work we looked into N-turnover in the water column and sediments of the Bangpakong estuary(13°N). A seasonal sampling program was performed along the salinity gradient covering different stretches of the estuary(68 km).Key physical and chemical characteristics were also monitored in order to unravel possible environmental controls. Results showed the occurrence of active denitrification in sediments(5.7–50.9 nmol N-N2/(cm3·hr)), and water column(3.5–1044 pmol N-N2/(cm3·hr)). No seasonal or spatial variability was detected for denitrification potential in sediment samples. However, in the water column, the denitrification activity peaked during the transition season in the downstream sites coinciding with high turbidity levels. Therefore, in that period of the year, the water column compartment may be an important contributor to nitrate reduction within the estuary. The rather low nitrification rates detected were not always measurable, probably due to the reduced oxygen content and high siltation. This study is one of the few dealing simultaneously with sediments and water column processes in a highly turbid tropical estuary.Therefore, it emerges as a valuable contribution for the understanding of the dynamics of the nitrogen cycle in tropical environments by exploring the role of estuarine N microbial activity in reducing the effects of increased nitrogen loads.  相似文献

In this paper the effect of temperature and NaCl concentration on the kinetic method of toxicity determination using Vibrio fischeri was studied for 50 ppm Zn(2+). This work shows that both NaCl concentration and temperature affect the kinetics of toxicity as well as the luminescence of the bacteria, and hence these are important factors that need to be considered in the development of a miniaturised portable instrument. Furthermore, this work shows that the conditions for which the kinetic test was most sensitive, i.e. exhibited the greatest response, were 23 degrees C and 2% NaCl. However, at these conditions small variations in temperature and NaCl concentration could lead to great errors in the results. Thus 12.5 degrees C and 2% NaCl are preferred as at these conditions the obtained results are more robust. Although at the latter conditions the toxicity rate constant was found to be 5.5 times less than that for 23 degrees C, the value is comparable to that obtained for 15 degrees C. From the data available it was also found that the temperature dependence of the toxicity rate fits the Arrhenius equation, in a behaviour similar to that of simpler chemical reactions.  相似文献
