We studied the transformation of phenol in the presence of nitrous acid in the dark. The main detected intermediates were 2-nitrophenol, 4-nitrophenol and 4-nitrosophenol. For the first time a kinetic analysis of the reaction in a pH interval relevant to environmental chemistry has been carried out. The kinetic data are consistent with phenol transformation being initiated by HNO2. The results are relevant to the chemistry of the atmosphere, where HNO2 forms upon heterogeneous conversion of ·NO2, and to water treatment techniques.  相似文献

This study focused on the exposure of the common ragworm Hediste diversicolor (Müller 1776) to sediments enriched with different arsenic compounds, namely arsenate, dimethyl-arsinate, and arsenobetaine. Speciation analysis was carried out on both the spiked sediments and the exposed polychaetes in order to investigate H. diversicolor capability of arsenic bioaccumulation and biotransformation. Two levels of contamination (acute and moderate dose) were chosen for enriched sediments to investigate possible differences in the arsenic bioaccumulation patterns. The highest value of arsenic in tissues was reached after 15 days of exposure to dimethyl-arsinate (acute dose) spiked sediment (1,172?±?176 μg/g). A significant increase was also obtained in worms exposed both to arsenate and arsenobetaine. Speciation analysis showed that trimethyl-arsine oxide was the predominant chemical form in tissues of H. diversicolor exposed to all the spiked sediments, confirming the importance of this intermediate in biological transformation of arsenic.  相似文献

Supported Fe2O3/WO3 nanocomposites were fabricated by an original vapor phase approach, involving the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) of Fe2O3 on Ti sheets and the subsequent radio frequency (RF)-sputtering of WO3. Particular attention was dedicated to the control of the W/Fe ratio, in order to tailor the composition of the resulting materials. The target systems were analyzed by the joint use of complementary techniques, that is, X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission-scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDXS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS), and optical absorption spectroscopy. The results showed the uniform decoration of α-Fe2O3 (hematite) globular particles by tiny WO3 aggregates, whose content could be controlled by modulations of the sole sputtering time. The photocatalytic degradation of phenol in the liquid phase was selected as a test reaction for a preliminary investigation of the system behavior in wastewater treatment applications. The system activity under both UV and Vis light illumination may open doors for further material optimization in view of real-world end-uses.

This paper aims to contribute to the ongoing debate on the protection of cultural and biological diversity, and their interconnectedness. It highlights the importance of understanding the dynamic and complex strategies that cultures are developing to protect their biocultural diversity in the face of the ongoing cultural, economic, and social reductionist transformations occurring worldwide. We analyze Totonac society in the present time, and provide evidence on how cultural revitalization processes are emerging from the grass roots, by focusing on the ceremony of the Voladores, a pre-Hispanic ritual performed by several indigenous groups in Mesoamerica. The preoccupation of Totonac communities to safeguard this millenary tradition fostered a process of dialogue, reinforced local institutions, and catalyzed the development of strategies to preserve a tree species and its habitat.  相似文献

Abstract

The feeding behavior of gypsy moth larvae exposed to two pesticide deposits (Bt and carbaryl) on oak leaf disks was monitored to determine the relationships between its efficacy and application parameters (droplet density and pesticide concentration). A range of pesticide concentrations and droplet densities (from 9 to 149 droplets/cm2) was used to simulate high and low application rates produced by different methods of application in the field.

The LD50 and the LC50, appeared to be affected by the spatial distribution of the deposit on the leaf surface. Both Bt and carbaryl showed a decreasing LD50 at increasing time after spray. The LD50 of Bt decreased from 14.1 BIU/liter to 3.1 BIU/Iiter between 48 and 144 hours after spray. The results show that feeding inhibition by Bt is more closely related to concentration than to droplet density and dose per unit area with the highest feeding inhibition occurring at 10 BIU/liter at 9 droplets/cm2. With carbaryl, an increase in both concentration and droplet density was necessary to cause a decrease in leaf area eaten by larvae.  相似文献

Monitoring campaigns from different locations have recently shown how air concentrations of persistent semivolatile contaminants such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) often exhibit short-term (less than 24 h) variations. The observed patterns have been ascribed to different factors, such as temperature-mediated air-surface exchange and variability of planetary boundary layer (PBL) height and dynamics. Here, we present a new modeling approach developed in order to investigate the short-term variability in air concentrations of organic pollutants at a local scale. A new dynamic multimedia box model is supplied by a meteorological preprocessor (AERMET) with hourly values of air compartment height and wind speed. The resulting model is tested against an existing dataset of PCB air concentrations measured in Zurich, Switzerland. Results show the importance of such modeling approach in elucidating the short- and long-term behavior of semivolatile contaminants in the air/soil system.  相似文献

Different transformation processes for nitrophenols in the atmospheric aqueous phase were considered to assess their relative importance, and their ability to account for the higher occurrence of 4-nitrophenol (4NP) compared to 2-nitrophenol (2NP) in the atmosphere. The importance of the different processes was in the order ?OH > ?NO3 > direct photolysis > nitration to 2,4-dinitrophenol. 2NP is more reactive than 4NP with the hydroxyl radical, but the difference is low. Accordingly, such a process could account for the higher atmospheric occurrence of 4NP only if the observed atmospheric nitrophenols were what was left of an almost complete degradation by ?OH. This would imply the unlikely scenario that the known nitrophenol sources to the atmosphere were only a limited fraction of the actual ones. A more likely, tentative possibility would be connected with the higher occurrence of 4NP on particles. If the reactivity order of nitrophenols in the atmospheric compartments was water droplets > gas phase > particles, particulate matter could act as a reservoir of 4NP. 2NP would undergo degradation in gas phase or solution at a higher rate than 4NP on particles, which could decrease the atmospheric levels of 2NP below those of 4NP.  相似文献

We found that the photochemical generation of reactive transients such as singlet oxygen and triplet states upon irradiation of different lake water samples is mostly accounted for by components smaller than 0.10 μm. Larger components often showed a much lower absorption and/or scattering of radiation compared with the smaller ones, with one exception where the minor to negligible photochemical activity of larger species was associated with significant radiation absorption/scattering. It is also shown that filtration of the lake water samples at 0.10 μm was able to effectively remove the suspended particles, differently from the usually suggested filtration at 0.45 μm.  相似文献
