FAO has a unique and essential rolein addressing the ethical problems facinghumanity and in making these problems intoopportunities for practical resolution. A broadrange of ethical issues in agriculture,fisheries, and forestry were identified byanalysis of the literature and by interviewswith FAO staff. Issues include sharing accessto and preserving natural resources,introduction of new technology, conservatismover the use of genetic engineering, ethics inanimal agriculture, access to information, foodsecurity, sustainable rural development,ensuring participation of all people indecision making and in receiving benefits ofagriculture, reducing corruption, andinvolvement of private and public sectors indecision making. Rather than viewing theseissues as problems, they should be viewed asopportunities for debate, learning aboutothers' views, and resolution. The UnitedNations has an important role to play in howdecisions are made in the global ethical debatein food and agriculture. The ethical role ofFAO is to promote global food security,balanced conservation, management andutilization of natural resources, andsustainable rural development. Changes of BOD/TOD and DOC with time were obtained for solutions of 9 synthetic surfactants and 2 fatty acid salts under various conditions. The cationic surfactants, ABM and ABDM, were not biodegraded at all and inhibited the biodegradation of a synthetic sewage. Yearling carp (Cyprinus carpio) were exposed to d-phenothrin (a 1:4 mixture of d-cis and d-trans isomers) in the absence and the presence of piperonyl butoxide under the flow-through test condition and the bioconcentration factors (BCF's) of the geometric isomers were separately evaluated. It was demonstrated that BCF values for the d-cis isomer were significantly higher by 1.1 to 2.2-fold than those for the d-trans isomer and the subsequent exposure in the presence of piperonyl butoxide resulted in elevated BCF values for the d-cis isomer, but no remarkable change in BCF's was observed for the d-trans isomer. The elevation observed here was presumably attributable to a reduced elimination caused by inhibited oxidative reactions characteristic to the d-cis isomer. The contribution of biotransformation to the elimination rate constant (K3/K2 was estimated to be 2.3–11. Thus, the result was well explained by a distinct oxidative metabolism of the d-cis isomer and a significance of metabolism in bioconcentration phenomenon was exemplified. 相似文献

(PVC) was ground with a powdered inorganic material (CaO, CaCO3, SiO2, Al2O3, or slag) in a planetary ball mill under atmospheric conditions to investigate the effect of additions on its dechlorination.
The grinding causes a dehydrochlorinating reaction, forming a mixture of partially dechlorinated PVC and inorganic chloride,
depending on the grinding time. The dechlorination increases as the grinding progresses, and is improved with increasing amounts
of additives. The most effective additive is a mixture of CaO, SiO2, and Al2O3, which has the same constituent components as blast furnace slag. CaO, a mixture of CaO, SiO2, and blast furnace slag, are also effective, but CaCO3 is the least effective additive tired.

Embryonic development assay with Daphnia magna: application to toxicity of aniline derivatives. 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
An assay system using Daphnia magna embryos was applied to investigate the adverse effects of aniline derivatives. The data were compared with our previous data for chlorophenols. This new assay provides useful information to evaluate the toxicity of chemicals and the differences in sensitivity between the life stages. The effects of 15 aniline derivatives on embryonic development of D. magna embryos were determined. At the start of exposure, 2-6-h old eggs (between stages 1 and 2, round in shape, diameter approx. 400 microm), were used. In control and solvent control groups, embryonic development from an egg to a free-swimming animal proceeded completely within 3 days with more than 90% hatchability. Median effective concentrations (EC50s) to reduce the numbers hatched were determined and gross morphological abnormalities of hatched animals recorded. Anilines induced no obvious morphological abnormalities and no developmental delay although premature deaths occurred. However, they affected the number of embryos hatching in a dose-dependent manner. In addition, this embryo assay was more sensitive to aniline derivatives (except for aniline) than acute juveniles immobilization assay. Ratios of 48-h EC50 (juvenile)/3-day EC50 (embryo) for eight anilines were greater than 5.0. Particularly, the ratios of 4-methyl-, 4-ethyl- and 3-methylaniline were 77, 23 and 11, respectively. EC50s for embryos and juveniles were poorly correlated (r = 0.41). This indicated that the sensitivities of the two life stages were different to the effects of anilines. EC50s were poorly correlated (r = -0.097) with the log Kow (1-octanol/water partition coefficient). These results were compared with previous results for phenols. 相似文献

The anaerobic biodegradation rates of four different sizes of poly (lactic acid) (PLA) films (thickness 25???m) in anaerobic sludge at 55?°C were examined. The anaerobic biodegradation rates of small pieces of PLA film were slower than for large pieces of PLA film. We also examined whether PLA film could also be used as a reference material in the anaerobic biodegradation test in addition to PLA powder. The anaerobic biodegradation rate of PLA film became slower with lower activity sludge, but the rate of decrease was gradual, and the anaerobic biodegradation rate of PLA film was faster than the PLA powder (125?C250???m). The anaerobic biodegradation rate of the PLA powder (125?C250???m) reflected the plastic anaerobic biodegradation activity of the sludge more accurately than the thin PLA film (thickness 25???m). Consequently, PLA powder (125?C250???m) is more suitable than thin PLA film (thickness?<?25???m) for use as a reference material to assess the plastic anaerobic biodegradation activity of the sludge in an anaerobic biodegradation test at 55?°C. 相似文献

Since the late 1980s, spider mite pests have caused serious damage to many moso bamboo (Phyllostachys pubescens) forests in China’s Fujian province. The culms of this plant are an essential component of the building and handicraft industries,
and the shoots are a prized food item in many Asian countries. Furthermore, bamboo forests play an important soil conservation
role in mountainous areas. We examined pest mite outbreaks in several moso bamboo plantations in Fujian, and could show that
a change in cultivation style from polyculture (a kind of mixed forest) to monoculture (all plants other than bamboo were
removed) was primarily responsible for the local extinction of an important predaceous mite species. This phenomenon is due
to the periodic shedding of leaves by the bamboo, which forces the predator mites occurring on bamboo to switch to prey mite
species that occur on other plants. We then tried to elucidate the factors that resulted from such a cultivation change. Adopting
a computer simulation approach, we could successfully show that at least two plants, moso bamboo and Chinese silvergrass,
are necessary to maintain stable predator–prey interactions in moso forests. That is, systems consisting of one common predator
and two host-specific pest mites on different host plant species frequently became stable when the pest mites were at low
density. This finding indicates clearly that bio-diversity, even when it consists of only two plants and three mite species
as in this study, is necessary for the sustainable regulation of large-scale forests, such as moso bamboo plantations. 相似文献

The amino acid sequence of a peptide containing an active serine was examined with poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) depolymerase ofAlcaligenes faecalis T1. The sequence Cys-Asn-Ala-Trp-Ala-Gly-Ser-Asn-Ala-Gly-Lys was obtained. This amino acid sequence around the active serine does not fit any reported sequence of other esterases and proteases. On the other hand, a segment of the amino acid sequence of PHB depolymerase ofA. faecalis was homologous to the type III sequence of fibronectin. Similar sequences have been reported in some type of bacterial chitinase and cellulases, and PHB depolymerase seems to have an overall similarity to these bacterial extracellular hydrolases. 相似文献
