The decomposition of vertebrate carcasses is an important ecosystem function. Soft tissues of dead vertebrates are rapidly decomposed by diverse animals. However, decomposition of hard tissues such as hairs and feathers is much slower because only a few animals can digest keratin, a protein that is concentrated in hairs and feathers. Although beetles of the family Trogidae are considered keratin feeders, their ecological function has rarely been explored. Here, we investigated the keratin-decomposition function of trogid beetles in heron-breeding colonies where keratin was frequently supplied as feathers. Three trogid species were collected from the colonies and observed feeding on heron feathers under laboratory conditions. We also measured the nitrogen (δ15N) and carbon (δ13C) stable isotope ratios of two trogid species that were maintained on a constant diet (feathers from one heron individual) during 70 days under laboratory conditions. We compared the isotopic signatures of the trogids with the feathers to investigate isotopic shifts from the feathers to the consumers for δ15N and δ13C. We used mixing models (MixSIR and SIAR) to estimate the main diets of individual field-collected trogid beetles. The analysis indicated that heron feathers were more important as food for trogid beetles than were soft tissues under field conditions. Together, the feeding experiment and stable isotope analysis provided strong evidence of keratin decomposition by trogid beetles. 相似文献

The trend of tropospheric ozone from 1998 to 2006 was examined based on continuous measurements made at a site on Mt. Happo, Japan. We focused our study on springtime ozone, to coincide with the East Asian continental outflow that dominates the lower tropospheric ozone over Japan during this season. The observed increase of ~1 ppbv yr?1 in the mean ozone level was statistically significant. We also found that the probability distribution of the springtime ozone mixing ratios was substantially modified, with the ozone mixing ratios greatly increasing at the upper end of the probability distribution. This increase has been particularly large since 2003, with larger increases occurring at the higher percentiles. The number of high-ozone days doubled during 2003–2006 compared to 1999–2002. One of the very likely explanations is the enhancement of regional ozone pollution due to rapidly increasing anthropogenic emissions from East Asia. 相似文献

This study examined the effects of four situational factors on the severity of punishment chosen by a manager following a rule infraction. Two attributes of the offender, gender and performance history, and two outcomes of the infraction, physical damage and personal injury, were combined within a scenario evaluated by 421 graduate business students in a 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 ANOVA design. Results indicated strong main effects for performance history, physical damage, and personal injury but not for gender. Further analyses indicated that the gender composition of the superior/offender dyad did not have a significant effect on the severity of discipline, although some variation occurred across dyads. These results imply that superiors are likely to base disciplinary judgements on situational factors, and that situational factors affect superiors' decisions in a simple, linear fashion. 相似文献

To achieve both high-efficiency power generation and high detoxification performance, advanced-type waste power generation plants such as pyrolysis and gas reforming plants are suggested. Further surveys on actual operational data of these plants are required in terms of reliability of the system when it is introduced to waste disposal sites. To verify the technical effectiveness of advanced-type waste power generation using the pyrolysis and gas reforming method, we evaluated 10?tons/day of municipal solid wastes (MSW) treated in a demonstration plant. A demonstration test was conducted over 100?days including 35?consecutive days of operation treating MSWs. The test results show high recycling performance and harmless nature of the plant which proves it to be an excellent waste recycling system. Major test results are as follows: (1) stabilization of waste treatment is possible with the wastes of various qualities, (2) clean gas is produced from the waste whose energy recovery ratio is approximately 40?%. (3) 99.3?% weight % of dried waste are recovered as valuable materials such as clean gas, char and metal, (4) total amount of dioxin emission to the outside of the plant is very small, down to 0.0051–0.018?μg?TEQ per ton waste. 相似文献

This paper reports on the relationships between creative mental sets and rule-violating actions using questionnaires answered by 218 nursing workers. An exploratory factor analysis was conducted. The results revealed five factors of creative mental sets: curiosity, minutiae, inquiry, sensitivity, and courage. In addition, rule-violating actions were found to consist of three factors: violation of regulations, violation of local rules, and self-style. The results of multiple regression analyses showed a negative relation between curiosity and regular rule violation. Negative correlations were observed among minutiae, inquiry, and local rule violation. Furthermore, the mean score of local rule violation of a person who thinks that it is important for the work environment to offer high and excellent care is significantly higher than that of those who think that other environmental considerations are more important. The result elucidated the necessity of using workers’ heuristics in the process of improving safety rules as well as improving their acceptability to workers. This point is important and applicable not only in the field of patient safety management systems, but also in other fields. 相似文献

Goal, Scope and Background Cadavers for gross anatomy laboratories are usually prepared by using embalming fluid which contains formaldehyde (FA) as
a principal component. During the process of dissection, FA vapors are emitted from the cadavers, resulting in the exposure
of medical students and their instructors to elevated levels of FA in the laboratory. The American Conference of Governmental
Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) has set a ceiling limit for FA at 0.3 ppm. In Japan, the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare
has set an air quality guideline defining two limit values for environmental exposure to FA: 0.08 ppm as an average for general
workplaces and 0.25 ppm for specific workplaces such as an FA factory. Although there are many reports on indoor FA concentrations
in gross anatomy laboratories, only a few reports have described personal FA exposure levels. The purpose of the present study
was to clarify personal exposure levels as well as indoor FA concentrations in our laboratory in order to investigate the
relationship between them.
Methods The gross anatomy laboratory was evaluated in the 4th, 10th and 18th sessions of 20 laboratory sessions in total over a period
of 10 weeks. Air samples were collected using a diffusive sampling device for organic carbonyl compounds. Area samples were
taken in the center and four corners of the laboratory during the entire time of each session (4-6 hours). Personal samples
were collected from instructors and students using a sampling device pinned on each person's lapel, and they were 1.1 to 6
hours in duration. Analysis was carried out using high performance liquid chromatography.
Results and Discussion Room averages of FA concentrations were 0.45, 0.38 and 0.68 ppm for the 4th, 10th and 18th sessions, respectively, ranging
from 0.23 to 1.03 ppm. These levels were comparable to or relatively lower than the levels reported previously, but were still
higher than the guideline limit for specific workplaces in Japan and the ACGIH ceiling limit. The indoor FA concentrations
varied depending on the contents of laboratory sessions and seemed to increase when body cavity or deep structures were being
dissected. In all sessions but the 4th, FA levels at the center of the room were higher than those in the corners. This might
be related to the arrangement of air supply diffusers and return grills. However, it cannot be ruled out that FA levels in
the corners were lowered by leakage of FA through the doors and windows. Average personal exposure levels were 0.80, 0.45
and 0.51 ppm for instructors and 1.02, 1.08 and 0.89 ppm for students for the 4th, 10th and 18th session, respectively. The
exposure levels of students were significantly higher than the mean indoor FA concentrations in the 4th and 10th sessions,
and the same tendency was also observed in the 18th session. The personal exposure level of instructors was also significantly
higher than the indoor FA level in the 4th session, while they were almost the same in the 10th and 18th sessions. Differences
in behavior during the sessions might reflect the differential personal exposure levels between students and instructors.
Conclusion The present study revealed that, if a person is close to the cadavers during the gross anatomy laboratory, his/her personal
exposure level is possibly 2 to 3-fold higher than the mean indoor FA concentration. This should be considered in the risk
assessment of FA in gross anatomy laboratories.
Recommendation and Outlook If the risk of FA in gross anatomy laboratories is assessed based on the indoor FA levels, the possibility that personal
exposure levels are 2 to 3-fold higher than the mean indoor FA level should be taken into account. Otherwise, the risk should
be assessed based on the personal exposure levels. However, it is hard to measure everyone's exposure level. Therefore, further
studies are necessary to develop a method of personal exposure assessment from the indoor FA concentration. 相似文献

Solution-grown single crystals of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-4-hydroxybutyrate) [P(3HB-co-4HB)] were hydrolyzed by polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) depolymerase from Ralstonia pickettii T1. Enzymatic degradation proceeded from the edges of lamellar crystals, yielding serrated contour and small crystal fragments.
Gel permeation chromatography analysis revealed that the molecular weights of the crystals decreased during enzymatic degradation,
suggesting that the enzymatic hydrolysis of chain-folding regions at the crystal surfaces occurred in addition to the enzymatic
degradation at crystal laterals or edges. After P(3HB-co-4HB) single crystals were aminolysed in 20% aqueous methylamine solution to remove the folded-chain regions and enzymatic
degradation by lipase from Rhizopus oryzae to remove 4HB components at crystal surfaces of single crystal aminolyzed, it was found that a small amount (up to ca. 2 mol%) of 4HB component can be incorporated into the P(3HB) mother crystal lattice irrespective of the 4HB content. 相似文献

In Okinawa, Japan, we found several species of the coral genus Acropora that spawn 1.5-3 h earlier than other mass-spawning acroporids. In six early-spawning species, gamete bundles appear on the surface of the colony ("setting") about 1 h before sunset, whereas setting occurs about 1 h after sunset in the more common late mass spawners. These early spawners are divided further into two sub-groups: three species that release their gametes within 1 h after setting and three that release their gametes 1.5-2 h after setting. DNA phylogenetic analyses show that each of these groups forms an independent genetic clade. These genetic relationships suggest that different spawning times form the basis of reproductive isolation among these broadcast-spawning corals. Late spawning appears to be the ancestral state, and the shift of spawning to earlier times may have played a role in the speciation process in these sympatric species. 相似文献

Estrogenic compounds such as 17beta-estradiol (E2) and its analogs are present in the aquatic environment and can adversely affect the reproductive systems of aquatic organisms. Although E2 has been detected at a maximum concentration of 64 ng/l in effluents of sewage treatment works (STWs), few reports address the associated effects on reproduction in fish. Therefore, we exposed adult medaka (Oryzias latipes) to mean measured E2 concentrations of 29.3, 55.7, 116, 227, and 463 ng/l for 21 d and assessed the effects on the egg number and fertility of paired medaka during the exposure period. In addition, we determined the hepatic vitellogenin (Vtg) concentration and histologically assessed the gonads of these fish. The number of egg produced and fertility of the paired medaka exposed to 463 ng/l E2 were significantly less compared with those of the control fish. Males in all treatment groups had developed testis-ova. Males treated with E2 concentrations = 55.7 ng/l contained relating great concentrations of hepatic Vtg. Therefore, although only the greatest E2 concentration tested in our study affected fecundity and fertility, effects of E2 were observed on induction of Vtg and testis-ova in male medaka exposed to environmentally relevant concentrations of E2. 相似文献
